Recently we've shared a look into the bedrooms of Americans, and today the house tour continues. This time it's thanks to a Milwaukee-based professional photographer called Lois Bielefeld, who traveled the States (and parts of Luxembourg) documenting people during their Weeknight dinnertimes, revealing the amazing variety of people and their habits.
“I’m super nosy about people’s habits,” Lois explained to Feature Shoot. “I’ve always craved going into people’s homes- it’s inspiring, curious. It gives so many sometimes subtle and sometimes blatant insights about someone, and I just love to reveal that in my photography art.”
Some of the people you see have already been featured in her other photo series, but some are complete strangers to the photographer, found online and through old-fashioned info bulletins.
The only instructions Bielefeld shared with everyone was to go about their dinner plans as they normally would on any given weeknight, capturing the ordinary meals and the casualness of the whole thing.
While Lois suspected that some people did put extra effort in preparing for that particular dinner meals, she doesn't mind, because it only gives the series new layers to explore.

De eternal optimist. I see justification thru the aging process, but in this era, they're looked upon as a 'useless comodity.' I read too much most likely. But the seniors are lookin' at a not so 'happy, happy' atmosphere, lifestyle, loss of civil liberty as near quality of anti-anxiety leers behind their chairs; unseen. In a dystopian society, surely encompassing soylent green.
Load More Replies...These two are adorable. I love seeing couples that look like they've been together forever.
I was just going to say the same thing: crazy adorable.
Load More Replies...Oh they remind me so much of my grandparents - I want to join them...look they have an extra chair!
What the f**k they do with that huge bottle of milk... at this ages ?!
I don't know why but I always get this pang in my heart when I see old people like them. Like.. I'm so sorry you're no longer young and I hope life treated you well and that your children visit often.
Monday: Joalice
I know you guys are all being kind, and that is very sweet, but I think assuming she is lonely is a mistake. I am alone by choice and often eat alone, and I know many other people who are the same. Being alone is not always the same as being lonely. I've been married twice and was more lonely during those marriages than I have ever been when I am on my own. Some of us just prefer our own companionship.
Yes, CelSlade, I've known other folks that are just like yourself. Be you, be the best "you" you can be, but don't forger to smile as often as you can. Having lived alone before, it's the best way to be. ;-D
Load More Replies...I'll bring dessert ! Hate to admit it, but, this is how I now eat dinner , minus, the sling . I know I look happier , though. Don't like to see anyone look lonely.
I was going to say something like "What if she wants to be alone?". But then I noticed that there were other empty placings on the table. Now I want to bring an apple pie, perhaps some cider, and join the panda gang.
Why? You're just assuming something because she's alone. She could be very happy even if she's alone...
Load More Replies...Time to heal with a cheerful table and a pleasantly quiet atmosphere!

I actually think this is beautiful. She's very creative and has a wonderful eye for decor. It doesn't look lonely to me. It looks like someone who eats alone, but probably has a vibrant personality and life.
It took me a few seconds to find her since she kinda blends in with the flowers on the table lol
From a design point of view, you have to appreciate how much of a time capsule this room is. This woman has character, and I have many meals with her just to hear her story.
She looks like very lovely lady but the room kind of... hurts my feelings. It looks sad to me for some reason
Wednesday: Norbert & Marie-Josée
This is what I see: These two got married right after WWII, had 4 to 6 kids, then came grand kids and GREAT grand kids and STILL 60 years later cannot imagine a day without each-other!
I love this. They are just like my grandparents, not forgetting to smile, love and do things together. I bet they are cleaning up together, when the meal is over! ❤
At first, I thought Frances (from the first photo) was stepping out on Joan. 😳

The only people I know who scrape the corn off the cob are those with dentures, but then i’m an Iowan...dreaming of the day when the snow goes away and I can do this.

It's "parmigiano cheese", I recognized it. In fact it's a rich dinner, maybe too much for twor persons.
Load More Replies...This looks like your typical Italian Mom who cooks for an army ... "just in case the kids drop in... or the neighbors... or Aunt Lucille." (Added bonus: lunch for days!)
Careful. There's been 'death by broccoli.' Read Scott Hazzard's book; he was an EMT. LoL

Are they not allowed to smile? I mean, till now, everyone's not smiling
I’m wrong i’m Sure, but reminiscent of an old surfer dude and a tech giant wannabe. 😂
I think that the guy to the left was told that he couldnt get dessert after 😆 he looks a bit ... 😡

This one looks quite disturbing. A fancy dining room with a single casserole on the table, a father with a blank stare, a mother with a "help me" stare, and kids with various faces ranging from "What am I doing here?" to "Is that the face I'm supposed to make?".
Ialos totally had to think of the Addams Family.
Load More Replies...What I see is an intact family that sits down to dinner together. They have a beautiful home, dining room with large table that the family seems to be proud of. The expressions show they are uncertain or irritated with why this picture needs to interrupt their dinner, yet I do see little side smiles, smirks, etc... on some faces. They have stopped passing the food around for all to have their plates filled yet. It seems like a traditional family having dinner. Many with or without money attempt to achieve the unity of family getting together for at least dinner time after busy days. This family seems to have made it a point to do just that without the interruptions of electronic gadgets to interfere with real conversation they will have. Parents seem to have taught their children well how to respect family dinners as an important part of their day.
Wednesday: Marc & Jan
the description notes that he took photos in parts of Luxembourg too, not just the USA.
Load More Replies...This is my uncle, Marc Angel, and his husband Honza at home (originally my great-grandmother's home). Marc is Luxembourgish (member of parliament) & Honza is Czech (he goes by Jan because people in Western Europe struggle with his name sometimes). And I know Marc's cooking - he did the salad! :) http://guide.paperjam.lu/biographie/marc-angel
Thank you for the "introduction" Fiona! Is his (Jans) name pronounced with a "J" sound or more like an "H"?
Load More Replies...This is my uncle and his husband. Yes, they are Europeans! This is at my great grandmothers home in Luxembourg 🇱🇺
That was my first thought seeing this picture.
Load More Replies...I don't see anything gay about this. These two resemble each-other too much, so I'm guessing father cooking for his son. Salad first, then the meat and wheel of brie. Bottle of red ~ C'est Magnifique!
With some artwork of the naked upper half of a guy in the background. Sure.

I love eating on the floor while watching t.v. as well. It's the same as our family.
Dinner time isn't the only time you can bond with your family. We get very hangry. Dinner is always with a favorite show, then tv goes off and full attention is on conversation and activities. Relax people. There are lots of ways to bond.
Wednesday: Nik
poor dude he's got a good taste in music and a dog but no one to eat dinner with
Let's dance to Joy Division, and celebrate with iced-coffee. Everything is going wrong, but we're so hungry.
I like this young man. Using the dining room and not letting the dog in. It should not be near the table.
We have 3 furry babies who always eat with us. 2 dogs-one is not shy about begging but he's nearly 11 so we just let him lay in front of us. The other one we call a nonchalant beggar because she just lays there with her head down & once in awhile glances over. Then there is our cat who sits front & center begging lol. It's quite a site.
Thursday: David And Cathy
Hot sauce, mustard and Parmesan cheese. Probably praying for no heartburn tonight?
Before I noticed the cat I thought she was holding a smart phone and surreptitiously glancing at it while praying. XD;;

My life. My husband has his TV tray too. We have dogs staring at us while we eat. That is OUR life though and we like it!!!

Why are all the rooms so dark. Our dining room was well lit! I want to see my food! Grin.

that would be adorable, but no, there's no silverware... and their dinner plates seem to be square while the other plates are for serving. ... I should be a detective! :D

You know why he's he looks sour Nancy? He has to eat salad. Someone stole his bow. Nathaniel can still hunt with a Bowie knife, but doesn't feel like it today. I'd visit this guy, bring in a quartered deer, fill that hollowed horn with cheap tequila, and we'd have a good time sharing war stories. And you thought the horn was decoration.
Nice home, would love to sit and chat with him over a nice salad dinner. Looks like an interesting person.
He looks like a hunter, but dining on a huge salad for this dinner. Kudos for letting his gatherer side prevail.

Look at the meds ! I wonder if John has had a stroke with the addition of the tennis ball to the tray table ?
Most of it are vitamins, which confuses me more.

See the meds on the table? Sally may be ill and Eric may be concerned. (a bit more kindness, people. seriously)
Those are just supplements: fish oil, ginkgo biloba
Load More Replies...There's a lot of stupid comments below this photo. Makes me sad. It's obvious they both don't have an easy life.
He is looking after his sick daughter. Look at her skin she is much younger than him.
Sally: "Well it IS only this big, Eric." Eric: *gritting teeth* "Take your meds, Sally."
Fish oil and Ginco Biloba are a common supplement.
Load More Replies...The apple cider vinegar is for it's health benefits, like the fish oil and Ginko Biloba. They are very nutrition conscious, as per the salmon, raw fruits and both cooked and raw veggies...
Sally; You know salmon has more protein than a banana, and loads of omega 3, not to mention.......... Eric; I don't care, I just want a burger.

I just love the gorgeous (silver maybe?) wine goblets on the $1.98 tray tables. We used them a lot when I was a kid in the '70s (the tables, not the goblets). These guys look really comfortable to me. It's a cozy picture.
Love the table in the middle so as not to crowd the individual TV trays!
Wednesday: Colin And Makeal
I love the furniture "on a budget". Lawn chair and the wood/wicker table/chair was probably found on the curb or for $1 at a yard sale. Been there, done that!
that is the kind of furniture they always had on fantasy island :)
Do they have a baby on the way? That looks like ultrasounds up there!

Growing up with a single mother that worked her butt off, our meals looked a lot like this. We didn't have a dining room table because that was money that needed to go towards food or electric. We ate in front of the TV and on the floor. I grew up eating hamburger Helper and watching Friends at dinner. And guess what..? My mom and I are as close as two people can be. I grew up in a wonderful loving home with a kick a*s mom. We have a dining room table now and a much better financial situation in general. Don't judge based on one glimpse into their lives. Don't judge unless you can say that you are perfect...and even then..just don't.
you obviously are very proud of your beautiful children's artwork. very nice!
No way that is their living/dining room that's got to be the kid's playroom

Comfy for sure , but, the room is really dark ......... a lot of photos which is nice
I think the photographer added a drama filter, as even the sunlit photos look a little dark.
Load More Replies...That tv must be joke right? 😁 Smaller than, ugh, can even make up anything.. 😂
lol @ huge tv cabinet but the tv is from the Eighties. That's somebody who's determined to save money.

I don't know, you can be close because you are in the same room. You each do what you like doing best and every now and then one turns round and says something. That can be very cosy.
Load More Replies...My son and I do different things while we eat- he is usually playing a video game, and I'm on the computer. But we're in the same room, we talk to each other, he asks me to watch something he's doing, I ask him to come see a video I'm watching, there is a closeness because we're together, sharing in each other's lives. When we go out to a restaurant, we sit and talk, but at home it's comfortable.
Some days it is like this at our house too. Just doing our own thing...

WOW what a negative vibe that pictures gives off. As in, domestic violence negative.
That chair. In the kitchen, and partly blocking the doorway. With him in it. She looks trapped.
Put a shirt on and your legs down Manchild. She needs to find someone who gives a c**p.
Way to read between the pixels guys. This if anything feels like a typical and natural picture. Captured in the midst of a conversation about her day at work or grocery supplies.
THANK YOU Jay Raman! Good God every single photo has comments from people about how sad people are and how "this picture makes me feel sad..." Jesus people, they're just photos of people from a second snap in time. You have no idea what's going on with these strangers and you're creating all kinds of stories around them. It's insane. My God, how can you create a whole story from one split second of a facial expression? From an arrangement of a room? How would someone interpret your life from your dining room? I'd be willing to bet some of the things you're judging these people so harshly on are in your own lives at this moment. The monster in the room is often the one who looks the most normal unfortunately. One can NEVER tell from appearances what lies beneath the surface. Never.

Most of these photos are sad and depressing. Many alone, lots of pills, lots of pre pkg meals. Many not eating at a table or together in same room. The pictures portray dark and gloomy looking meal times. My childhood memories were loud, everyone talking and lots of laughing. Perhaps not the fine manners some think a meal should be but it was catching up on everyone's day and family time together. Miss those days!
I think that for some reason this is the aesthetic the photographer was going for. A lot of these pics are much too dark considering the light sources - the levels have clearly been adjusted. Far too few people are smiling - statistically you would expect more smiles than not. In some you can actually see the younger kids fight not to smile. I'm sure they were told not to. As for what they eat - let people live! Everyone's preferences and circumstances are not the same. Nor can you say that one photo of one night is representative of what they eat all the time. On any given night I might make a tuna sandwich, roast chicken with veg, or take away pizza. Life is variable that way.
Load More Replies...Correct, they should be at a table, or at least interacting with each other
your lucky times kiddo, with your grandparents waiting to enjoy a lovely dinner. Live when you are kid.
Supper time ain't what it used ta be. Despite the relative affluence displayed in most of the photos, almost everyone looks a little forlorn. Was also expecting to see some homeless folk eating from garbage cans, that would-a shown a different side to the whole subject.
I have never seen people so uninterested and miserable around mealtime...are they not thankful they can fill their tummies when many around the world don't have this opportunity. Plus...a simple tip....switch on the lights!!!!
they had that kid very late in life, and Dad just does't "get" him ..."Back in my day....." lol
There is only 1 identifiably "elderly" person eating alone. And eating alone isn't sad. About 40% of this country does this on a regular basis. It is actually kind of nice, to make exactly what you want, in exactly the right amounts, when you want, and to eat in your own cozy home. After decades of shopping and cooking for other people, and catering to their tastes and desires, it's really peaceful - and even indulgent - to cook many of my meals to suit myself alone, and eat in my pretty house, maybe with some music playing, or a magazine or book. Eating alone doesn't necessarily mean loneliness.
Load More Replies...It could have been titled "Misery Across America" or "Supper After the Funeral" or "Photos for Wrist-Slitters" or "How America Meets Death" I can hardly wait for the depression to set in.
I was fascinated by the people , the food they ate , their surroundings , & their dining habits. I learned from all of this how people's dining has changed. I grew up around a table with lively discussions, laughter, & sharing of one's day. When do many of these families do that ?
same here... also saddened by how many people with kids are not around a table.. eating in front of TV, on the floor..
Load More Replies...I find most of these to be rather depressing to look at. Most of the families look miserable, angry, or exasperated. It is deliberately depressing I think, so not really a good form of art, there should be variety of families, not just looking for unhealthy ones and trying to display it as most families
