6.For substrate, sand is the best because it is too small for the fish to accidentally choke on. You'll want to rinse new sand in a large pot and a hose like you would rinse rice, except you want to rinse it a lot more. Without the rinsing, the sand will make the tank water cloudy and will not clear up. A filter is also very important. You cannot get a filter too large. The soft recommendation I've gotten from my vet is a filter three times higher specs than the tank size. For a 55 gallon tank, an Eheim 600 matches well. This is also a canister filter that will live outside the tank. Most people put it in a cabinet, and have their tank on top. If you can't use a canister, you can put two AquaClear 70 filters on either side of the tank for good circulation.

Most goldfish will need a 55 gallon tank minimum. Goldfish were bred from carp, and some species, like feeder fish, can get massive. They really deserve a pond and shouldn't be in a small tank. The ”grows to the size of the tank” thing is a myth. It's simply stunting growth. If you kept a puppy in a cage only twice its size its whole life, it would be stunted, too. Don't abuse animals; get an appropriately-sized tank for your fish.

You can fill the tank with the fish in it if you add water conditioner while you're filling it and get the temperature right.
