Content creator Allison Delperdang turned to TikTok to ask a question that just wouldn’t leave her alone: how often are adults washing their pajamas?
And judging from the attention her video has received, it’s a more relevant topic than it might sound at first. In just a few weeks it has already racked up over 1.5 million views and has received nearly 7,000 comments.
The ongoing debate on this automatic part of people’s everyday routine serves as a reminder that the word ‘normal’ can mean different things to different people, so we thought it would be interesting to explore it!
If you need proof that the term ‘normal’ is relevant, Allison Delperdang has you covered

The woman asked TikTok users how many times they wear their pajamas before washing them
“I need to know if people wear pajamas multiple nights in a row. When I was younger, my parents always made us wear pajamas more than like, multiple nights in a row because they weren’t dirty. And I still do that as an adult. I’ve worn these three nights in a row.”
“So I need to know if as adults we’re still doing that or should I be literally making dirty clothes every single night? Are we wearing pajamas multiple nights or what’s the situation?”

For the record, “pajamas” usually mean any kind of clothes that you sleep in regularly, from T-shirts and boxer shorts to old-fashioned slumberwear.
A survey of nearly 2,500 people ages 18 to 30 by British mattress company Ergoflex found that the average time men wear pajamas without washing them is 13 nights, and for women, it’s 17 nights.
And regardless of how you would answer, there are plenty of people who think you’re doing it wrong

Interestingly, the TODAY anchors have also analyzed this topic.
“I wash them like I would wash a T-shirt that I wash every day,” Carson Daly said. “I wash them pretty often.”
“I wear a T-shirt and I wash it every day,” Hoda Kotb added.
Al Roker is a T-shirt and boxers man, and he swaps those out for fresh ones daily.
They also asked their viewers the same question, and the majority (45.7%) of the 2,783 who answered said they wash their pajamas once a week, a quarter (25.8%) said they do it twice a week, and one-in-five (19.5%) said they wash theirs daily. One in ten (9%) probably still live with their parents, as they selected the “I’m supposed to wash them?” option.
Allison’s video has been viewed over 1.5 million times

To settle the issue, TODAY phoned housekeeping authority Martha Stewart to learn what’s her opinion on the matter.
“I absolutely suggest you wash your pajamas, your nightgowns, your underwear, whatever you sleep in, every day,” she said.
Or, if you want my not-so-expert advice, just sniff it!
And while most people seem to be reusing their pajamas before tossing them into the laundry basket
Some think it’s gross and sleep in fresh clothes every night
Allison also started a similar discussion on towels
“We’re gonna get into bedsheets another time, but I was wondering about towels in people’s comments. So, same thing. When I was younger, my parents always had us reuse towels because when we used them out of the shower, we were clean. So they never had us put our towel in the dirty clothes after using it one time. So now I’m curious if that’s a standard thing or what everyone does?”
And it’s just as dividing
@allisondelperdang Replying to @queen.elizabeth.85 alright. Lets get back into it. Are we washing towels after every use as an adult? #adulting #towels #laundry #laundrytok #adulthumor #DoritosTriangleTryout ♬ original sound – Allison Delperdang (Kjar)
You have people who use towels multiple times before grabbing new ones
And those who rotate them daily
I wish BP would stop promoting these posts that are literally only created to make people argue. This is the most infuriating thing about social media, and these people are taking advantage of it for clout, and then boredpanda gives them another platform to cause more pointless bickering.

Load More Replies...What? People wash their pj's after every wear? Unless you're sleeping in dirt or sweating buckets that's not necessary. Then again I sleep in the nude so what do I know.
Oooo! you'd better be washing all the sheets and blankets then every day! :) /s

If you wash them daily (and yourself) you are wasting the world's resources on half/quarter filled washing machines/dryers. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. No one died from wearing PJ's for more than one night. Be responsible please. It's not hygiene we're talking about, it's some fluffy made up thing.

It doesn't seem like a heated discussion. "Yes, I wear them for days then I smell them to see if they need a wash". "No, I think they're dirty so I change them every day". What's next? "Woman sparks heated discussion online after asking who prefers chocolate ice cream over vanilla ice cream"
Lol! The answer is both. Chocolate on its own or in sundaes, vanilla with cake or pie, cookies, etc. Or even better yet, twist so you get both at once.

I wear mine 2/3 times before getting new ones. I shower before I go to bed so I'm clean when I put them on each time. Towels and sheets get washed once a week.
As long as they don't smell, who cares? And why is it anyone's business but you and the person you're sleeping with?
Getting new pajamas for every night or washing the same ones every day are both something you have to be privileged with a lot of money to do this is insane 🤦🏻 not to mention doing that much laundry is horrible for the environment and a lot of places are already running out of water as it is, why waste more?
This planet is losing water to outer space! It is not a renewable resource. The more you use, the less someone else has to drink. The more you use, the more expensive it gets.
The amount of surface water on Earth actually increases overtime. Meteoroids alone bring magnitudes more water to Earth than is lost to space, and nearly all of the lost elements to space consists of hydrogen. Volcanic activity adds more surface water than anything else however. But anyway I agree, only wearing pajamas once that aren't soiled, from something like excessive sweating, is a total waste. Waste of money on extra pairs of pajamas, detergent, water, electricity, and time. I guess maybe if someone has terrible body odor at all times and can't go one single night without stinking them up? If that's the case, I feel sorry for said person 😢

I wear a t-shirt and shorts until they smell bad, towels usually twice a week. You don't want to know how long with bedding. Regular clothes are only worn once.
I have to lug my bags of laundry down stairs, across the street to my car, unload, do the wash, then back to the car, lug across the street, back up stairs. I'm gonna use the friggin' towel all week and change jammies twice a week. NO apologies.
I am gross, I wash my sleeping clothes when I wash the rest of my clothes. That isn't often because I have to hand wash everything and it takes more energy than I have most of the time.
If I'm having a depression episode I wear them multiple days in a row. If I'm not depressed I still wear them multiple days in a row. It's just sleepwear.
Y'all wear PJs? I just wear sweats and a t-shirt or if it's winter I have a designated hoodie that is only worn for sleeping at home
I don’t wear pyjamas, and anyone who comes into my bed soon finds themselves without them
Unless you're washing your sheets every day as well, this seems so pointless. I sleep in just underpants, but I wear pajama's when going to and leaving my room. That gets washed maybe every month. Even if I slept in it, at least two weeks. Unless it's hot. What's the point?
i don't know a single person who wears pajamas only once 🤷🏽♀️
I wear mine until they start smelling like pickled onion monser munch... but I don't sleep in them, i kick them off 5 mins after getting into bed because wearing clothes in bed makes my skin crawl.
I had to laugh when I read that "celebs" were fresh nighties every night. Of course they do! They don't do their own laundry, that's why they have staff!
They must be millionaires, wash and dry pjs and towels everyday - water, electricity, washing powder/liquid, other laundry aids, and probably have to replace them very often as each wash damages the clothes a bit. Waste of money and resources!
Are the people who wash/change their pjs daily wash/change their sheets with the same frequency? Their reasons apply to linins as well, no?
I feel like morning vs night showering would have the biggest impact here. If you're a morning showerer your pjs and sheets get you at your dirtiest and would need to be washed more often, less if you shower before bed. Not to mention factors like what you do in your day, how naturally sweaty/smelly you are, and of course the biggest factor, your tolerance for dirt/smell vs willingness to do laundry.
One would think that this young woman is attention seeking if she's foolish enough to ask the Internet about the frequency or not of washing her pajamas. Yet another of BP's endless, mindless posts just to stir up controversy where none existed....as well as the OP herself creating a stir that wasn't there, and didn't ever have to be.
Seems to me like there's a positive correlation between income level and pajama washing... That is to say, it seems like people who make more money are washing their pajamas more often. -peasant with unwashed pajamas
i prefer clean pjs every night because i feel comfier and sleep better that way but because of the cost of living crisis, i'm going 4-7 nights now (unless i've sweat a lot in the night). body towels are about the same but hand towels are every other day or so because they're used more often so they get damp quickly and stop actually drying lol
Everyone sweats constantly, normal bodily process. Sometimes it's minimal and not enough to notice, sometimes heavily and soaks whatever is on you. If you haven't dampened the pajamas, there are no visible stain spots, and you don't smell anything growing on them (think the smell of a molding towel left hanging after a shower), then it's fine. I only use my pajamas before bed and after I get up, couple hours a day really, so mine last me weeks.
I wear my PJs for about a week or sooner if the get dirty, change towels and sheets about the same frequency. More often is a waste of water, money and my time.
Do the people who only wear them once also burn them afterwards and bury the ashes?
My PJs get tossed over a chair in my bedroom after use. Some nights a grab a new pair, and add to my chair collection, other nights I reuse PJs from my chair. All go into the wash on laundry day, 1x per week. So I would say each pair gets used at least 2, or 3x before being washed. Oh, and I use the same towel all week! The towel touches my just washed body for only minutes before being hung to dry. I believe washing after every use is quite wasteful and harmful to our planet!
It seems to me those that change pjs every day would change their sheets too. Whats the difference? Also wanna bet those that change pjs every day only change sheets once a month or longer? Heck i havent worn anything to bed in over 45 years. No pjs. No underwear. No nothing. Does that make me worse than those that do? Mmmm....
1st off-why do you need someone to tell you when to wash anything? All of y'all are grown. As long as you're clean, it's your own business. Towels-same thing. Some like a fresh one daily, others don't care. You do you-you're paying the bills, not them
Why is it her business to know? Who the hell cares? Girl MYOB and get a real life.
100% totally fine stretch em’ out a week or so. If I go thru detox sweats or it’s a muggy night then yeah, other than that save some room in your hamper.
The real question is.. Who's paying the water and laundry liquid bill? I can only assume most live with parents or a higher ranking military spouse if it's every day. Must be nice. I have three sets of house wear, I wash them at the end of the week.
Shirts 2-3 wears, pants 4-5 wears, underwear & socks 1 wear, towels & pj's 7 wears, bedsheets 30 wears. How often do you wash/clean your jackets & outerwear??
I mainly just wear boxers to bed so yea I change them everyday but things like towels or pants and shirts I'll wear them multiple times unless I get them really dirty.. I don't have enough clothes to constantly wear clean ones
I think the answer depends on whether or not you take a shower right before putting them on and going to bed...
I wear my PJs 3 nights in a row unless I sweat overnight or I spill something on them. I use my towels/washrag for a week before I switch them out. I don't have the energy or money to be doing laundry every week to keep up with daily changing of PJs or towels and washrags. Nor do I have a stockpile of PJs and towels that daily changing of them wouldn't be an issue. Plus to the folks that do change their PJs everyday do you change your sheets everyday too? Because if sleeping in PJs multiple days in a row is gross then wouldn't sleeping in the same sheets everyday also be gross?
About as much arguing as the "apparently I'm disgusting because I don't shower every day" video. If you change your underwear and aren't sweating profusely, I promise, you can safely wear pjs (and jeans) a couple days AND you can skip showering a couple days a week and be fine.
Does it really matter? Like I'm single, live alone and work from home. I won't change out of my pajamas for sometimes a week (yes, wearing them for 168 hours straight). Also I don't shower as much as I did when I was going into the office, so towels are changed like once a month and washed like every 4 months. I've got enough pajamas that I wash maybe every 1-2 months. But once again, work from home and live alone. I'm sure if I was around others more I would be a bit more self conscious, but even when I was showering twice a day, towels and pajamas got washed like every 2 weeks.
(JK).. I alway expected that PJ stood for Penis joke. Guess I learned something today. And I go commando to bed..
Who cares though. That's the biggest question. Who in their right mind cares what people they don't know think
I actually do care if people are washing towels and PJs after every use! It's my planet too. Maybe these people don't care about the planet or future generations, but at least after this thread they won't get to do it in ignorance anymore.
Load More Replies...I agree with the person that said they wear their clothes until they feel like it's dirty. There's no set amount of time, it always varies. I definitely go multiple days with the same PJs cause like,,, I'm just in bed, where would it be getting dirty? People saying they wash their towels every day are bonkers and wasteful. You use your towel after you've already (hopefully) cleaned yourself so it doesn't need to get washed right after.
Adults wear pajamas to bed??? Man I just wear my underwear and no shirt to bed.... So I guess I change my pajamas daily too then but not wash them daily. Thats so wasteful of water to do so.
Lol. If you shower in the morning, it doesn't matter whether your pajamas were clean or lightly worn the night before. I wear mine usually twice before washing, but it varies. And when I travel, you better believe I'm not packing a fresh pair for every night--thats way too much junk in the luggage.
If you aren't sweating in them or eating in them and spilling food on them, or remaining in them the following day I don't know why they would need to be washed every day. I sleep in undies only, so yeah, I wash my pjs, if you want to call them that, after one wear. But on the rare occasions I wear a t shirt to bed I don't feel the need to immediately wash it.
I wear PJs most of the week, i shower at night so they're clean , but i can understand people swapping out, you do sweat at night and it's just preference. ..but new towel every time?? You're literally JUST out of the shower, it's just taking water off. Unless you're dipping in the toilet reaching for it that's absolute wasteful nonsense, and is objectively stupid haha
I love how the give stars for how often Brits and average people actually wash their pajamas and throw in “authority” (celebrity) Martha Stewart’s opinion that they should be washed EVERY DAY. Thank you, Internet, you have caused even more unnecessary turmoil for people who just want to live their lives and not be judged by strangers for what they do in their own homes.
You guys wear cloaths to bed? Also once a week unless dirty. Towels: hang to dry and reuse, wash once a week. I assume you are cleaning yourself in the shower, so the towel is only wet not dirty.
I'm surprised so many people actually wear pajamas for sleep. I cannot sleep in clothes and my husband is the same. I change into PJs in the evening but disrobe before bed. I only wear them for 4-5 hours of lounging around before bed, not for cooking or eating.. so I only wash them after 2-4 wears.
I wash the pj's once a week with the rest of the laundry on Saturday. If you shower every night before bed and aren't sweating or eating during the night I see no need to wash everything daily. Why don't they survey how often people change their sheets..that would be some interesting answers!
I don't have oily skin nor do I use moisturizer before bed. I bath at night/shower in the morning (I live in Brazil so 2 a day is common) and use an exfoliating scrub every other night. Since I watch and maintain my diet my body and it's odors aren't prone to fluctuations. I am at menopause and no longer have "invisible leaks". Because I have a lower transfer of body dirt (oils, dead skin, etc) I only have to watch out for sweating. So depending on the season or any nightmares, I can get away with 7-10 days in PJs. If you are on your period, you should change daily as there is a threshold that blood can not be seen by the naked eye. If you have body odor issues (eat too much garlic for example) that will transfer. Any oils, dead skin and moisturizers will increase what residue you leave. Same with if you are a morning shower and not night as well. We all have dead skin and oils. Just pay attention to your body and act accordingly
To each their own I guess, but in all honesty, my jammies is literally just boxers and a shirt. The boxers change after my nightly shower but the shirt can last for a good week or more before I throw it in the washing machine. Plus, I sleep in a cold room so sweating is rare and also just process this for a minute, Pandas: LAUNDRY...!
No wonder why Americans have a laundry problem... Change towels, t-shirts, pjs, jeans every day, no wonder they have huge pile of laundry...
I wear undies with the PJs. Then you can change the undies every night. And as for bath towels, you don't need the gargantuan ones. I use smaller, thinner bath towels. They take up less room, they fill the washer and dryer, and they take forever to dry. They're easier to maneuver around your body to dry off. I swear you can get used to them and you will see the beauty of them!
I wear t-shirts and boxers that I change every other night (I own five or six of each that are meant for sleeping in). I think how often you change them depends on when you shower. If you shower at night, you might get away with eating them for longer. If you shower in the morning, change them more often because you're going to bed "dirty." Just because you're not sweating doesn't mean there's not a lot of oils and skin cells on your PJs. How many hours are you in your sleep wear between washes?
This is soooo gross to me. My pajamas, especially the bottoms, are like my underwear since I don't wear panties around the house. I don't wear the same pair of underwear twice without washing so I don't wear the same PJs twice without washing. And yes, I also use the towel once between washes. I hate doing laundry and putting away clothes, too, but I can never hate it to the point of sacrificing hygiene. 🤢
These same people freaking out about having to have clean towels, PJs and bedsheets daily will wear the same dirty, deodorant and sweat stained bra for a week+.
I don't reuse towels, I know I'm clean after a shower but just no. Its fresh pyjamas every night. I'm not putting dirty clothes (possible sweat, dead skin cells 🤢 ) on a clean body after I've showered ICK!
I don't think it's idiot for young people to ask a question, so they know better. Children ask questions all day long and they are always learning something. How many times we adults asked Google stupid questions, it's okay.
