The internet is full of beautiful and amazing photographs, but do you ever stop and wonder just what went into that perfect shot? I'm not just talking about the digital manipulation side of the process, although there's certainly plenty of that involved. No, I'm talking about the physical hard work combined with the often super-creative approaches that photographers employ in order to ensure that their final shot is the very best it can be.
Take a look at these behind-the-scenes pictures to see what we mean. Compiled by Bored Panda, they're sure to give the budding photographer some fresh ideas while giving the rest of us an enlightening glimpse into the reality that hides behind many a perfect picture.

Miniature Car Models Create Realistic Historical Photos
Wait... what? That is really cool. I clicked to flip umpteen times to believe it.
Me too! That's pretty creative and also makes me second guess everything in my life!
Load More Replies...A great example of "forced perspective" film SFX going back to Georges Melies.
This is the oldest technique. I have seen it in the making of Charlie Chaplin movies too.
Wedding Photography
BEAUTIFUL wedding shot! Works great.... or at least until the puddle dries up!
Dedicated photographer! He had to stand still right there for quite a while waiting for the ripples to stop rippling before shooting the pic.
Water Reflections
And now we know!!! I often wondered how certain photos had been created underwater!
Even though his hair is laying flat it still looks neat.
Load More Replies...Thought the same tho at first I thought it was a girl😂😂😂
Load More Replies...I don`t care about how they made this,I care that the guy is gorgeous!
Life In A Drop Photography
Surreal Miniature Photography
This Felix guy seems to be the king of this sort of thing right now. A great deal of the photos like this you see are all from the same guy. Check out his website. It's insane.
Load More Replies...Seems that macro photography creates the best stock photos out there ;). Now I know what to do to get paid :))
Girl Enjoying Rain
An observant person would have noticed that it's only raining on the leaf. But I do still love the effect!
It's a photoshoot, I don't think it's anything wrong with the lipstick
Load More Replies...Fox Close Up
How is this a lie? It IS a CLOSE UP of a fox! Duh!!!
Load More Replies...How is that a lie? Because I'm not personally right in front of that fox?
Water Splash Background
And this is the first take only. There are always more. Poor guy jumping back in multiple times soaked!
He has to be, he is already wet, so I think this wasn't the first shot ;-)
Load More Replies...Didn't we have a post entirely about this photographers method of adding splash? Ahh, here it is https://www.boredpanda.com/belly-flop-splash-water-background-photography-snow-yuki/
Levitation
I'd think she would still have to be some sort of gymnist to be able to balance (and hold) like that. Wowza!
I take that back. I'm pretty sure the ladder is photoshopped in.
Load More Replies...Here ya go. Like this. https://www.dropbox.com/s/15pp0upnqj1uihm/Screen%20Shot%202016-10-08%20at%2016.23.43.png?dl=0
Load More Replies...Exactly... what about the dress? Even if her body holds up, dresses don't generally float like that
Load More Replies...Why does the ladder look different where it meete/surrounds her body at the waist?
I think they put cloth over it to make it easier to photoshop?
Load More Replies...Wedding Photography
And after the shooting, clothes straight into the washing machine!!! ;-)
that is a bit dark I think look at the at the water a stuff not the sort of wedding photo I would choose
Why make it stormy like that? I can never understand why people make these fake wedding photos - surely you want to remember how your wedding really was? I know I did. All of my wedding photos were real and many captured real moments - we didn't spend 2 hours taking photos after the ceremony and then have them photoshoped.
even though this is a lie and all the pictures are too doesnt make me stop loving the pictures :))
Photoshoot 25m Under The Sea In A Sunken Shipwreck
That's not really a photography lie. The girl is really there, under water, with no air tank. Very impressive.
She is probably real. She would be able to stay down there as long as she got lung-fulls of air every so often from one of the other divers. The other divers also probably helped her descend to that depth by holding her and using their own gear to 'drag' her down with them.
Load More Replies...The girl herself is a professional diver. You can see Von Wong's work in video.
I remember reading about this and it was a real person who would take in air in between shots. I could never do this for any amount. I would absolutely freak. Impressive indeed!
M&M’s In Water Drops
the m-n-m's on the main pic are lined up like rainbows, yet the reveal pic has them all mixed up in the bowl - a lie within a lie! ;)
What a brilliant idea !
Scientific trivia note -- this was how the first microscope operated. A drop of water in the middle of a holder acted as a magnifying lens. xLeeuwenho...7ed1e0.jpg
The only photo that agrees with the title of this article. This one is BS.
Floating
Lock the camera down on a tripod, shoot as shown and again with no furniture or model. Then combine the 2 images. Then just a little detail work to retouch around edges.
that would still be hard t keep the posture even though she is not flying
Omg, what did you think? That she jumped of the chair like that ???? It's obvious that it was edited, not a lie when it's physical impossible to make this happen. It's simply art. The same way as every fantasy and sci fi movie is art. It's edited... Not a lie. It's entertainment, and people know it's not real.
Um...not to nit pick, but why isn't the broom in the background floating?
How Landscape Photos Are Really Made
Not all are like this! This is just someone being creative and trying something different! Funny that lol
I take exception to this one. Maybe SOME artists fake it this way but a lot of them really would take thousands of photos of a REAL landscape to catch that perfect shot. Or maybe overlay two or three. But point is actual place-specific photography. Not Hollywood shenanigans
This artist makes artifical landscapes and than photos of them. I find it amazing. I am sorry I dont remember his name.
Load More Replies...The clouds still look like puffs of cotton & tornadoes are not that consistently dense. Maybe it was Dumbo's trunk! He can fly, he can fly, he can fly! lol
OK i'd never have thought of that, at least it's safer but no near as fun
Splashing Roses Photography
Ok. I've seen enough. The biggest "lie" here is your article's click-bait title. Understand photography before you seek drama for drama's sake
This is just showing what it looked like as they did it, but it wasn't dishonest.
its not a lie its called splashing roses and the photographer is actually splashing the roses with water i mean how else was he supposed to take this pic
I don't really get why the title says 'photography is a lie' - this is just some behind the scenes things that are actually very clever. Photography is both an art as well as a craft - and these are some of the tricks of the trade :)
Underwater Photoshoot
But, it's really underwater and she's really floating. Not so much a lie as extreme photography
I am still looking for the trick here. If she's actually under water, shouldn't we call it real, instead of a lie?
Why is it a lie? The girl IS actually under water. Just because she had to breathe?
Nope... I saw a tutorial for this. The room is not under water but she is and then they merge the pictures. So for that second one, they just took a picture of the room at the same angle she was at with the divers and then merged them together.
Heart-shaped Photo
the one who post this things doesn't know what a LIE means i think. this is bokeh, a light effect, not a lie
But imagine how long the title for this group of photos would be if they were careful to include all the ways used to achieve the effects.
Load More Replies...I have a very similar shot on my site of Tower Bridge in London. Check out timglasbyphotos.com or Insta @timglasbyphotos and let me know what you think.
Levitation Shot
This had to take a lot of editing... a little too much for my liking but still a cool aftershot
Reminds me of an article in PRINT decades ago on the making of the Grace Jones LP cover "Island Life." She assumed a number of contorted poses while remaining in the same spot in front of the camera. Then the photo editor literally sliced pieces out of different prints and pasted them together into one impossible pose.
And that was done when Photoshop was still an academic experiment called "the H.E.L.L. Machine."
I do hafta wonder why it took her so long to finally remove her top. grace3-590...651321.jpg
Love the inventiveness of this and how the photographer worked out all the steps.
Cause the first three pics are for her hair and the last one for her legs in diagonal position.
Load More Replies...How Rare White Curtain Auroras Are Made
I wonder why these are called "lies" These should be called "CREATIVITY"
The Aurora Borialis looks white in real life - its long exposure shots that make it look like it's colour. So 'rare' white shots aren't really rare - this seems like a lot of effort for nothing
They are mostly green and sometimes colorful naturally.
Load More Replies...Burning Lava
The photog admitted he photoshopped himself being on fire for drama. So this is a double photoshop. Lava that hot would be so hot one couldn't approach it let alone tolerate it.
yes, but the flip photo is also a lie - he added the flames in post... he got hounded for it.
In reality, if he was standing that close to a lava plow hot enough to light a tripod on fire, his skin would melt off. I've hiked out to this lava flow many times, and you can't stand within 5 feet of a flow without starting to feel intense burning on your skin.
its a realistic photo by nat geo not fake he is literally on the lava taking the picture so not a lie
Mirror Lake
That is actually more of Photoshop and some mirrors on the sand. The video is available on youtube.
Large Bust
It would look better if she cross her whole forearm over that area, it looks weird the way she has her hand
Sexiest knees ever! The true lie here is the not everyone's knees have that kind of beauty! LOL
Like the nabours folded elbow in the back. But still it looks impressive!
"Milk" In Cereal Commercials Is Often Glue
There's an advertising law in Canada, and I believe in the USA that the food you are advertising has to be real. In other words, you can't have a plastic replica of a Big Mac. It has to be the real thing. Now with cereal shots, the milk is not what's being sold, and real milk would turn the cereal soggy so while glue is used as these shots could take hours to perfect. I should know. I shoot this stuff.
I'd be more interested to know why the vase of rocks holding a clip that holds another clip that holds the glue over the bowl? Can't take the time to squeeze it by hand?
No, because the hand is not as steady and the glue must be applied/poured evenly.
Load More Replies...Just like how they use all kinds of fake things in movies - chocolate mud, tea as whiskey, dishwashing liquid to keep beer foamy. I was working in a bar where a scene for a movie was shot once. Even the peanuts were fake. The actress who had to eat the peanuts was allergic so they used barley sugar candies and painted a matt finish on them with icing sugar.
In Deutschland ist es verboten, bei Werbefotos für Lebensmittel auf Materialien zurückzugreifen, welche nicht zum Verzehr geeignet sind.
Creating An Indoor Blizzard
I was the model in this shot---it was never designed to trick anyone. it was made at a seminar showing lighting techniques- (this was a 3 light shot- with a backdrop and a snow machine-) the seminar and the photo was done by Joey Lawrence. (I use this image on my busness card)
I think it is a stunning shot of you. I am an old fashioned photographer and only photograph what I can see, no one is interested sadly
Load More Replies...the "snow" was a snow machine--the snowflakes, soap bubbles blown by a fan and a person with a "wafeing board"
Load More Replies...Bouncing Baby
Rock Climber
His arm looks so long compared to the other.. Must be because of the angle.
That is actually true, but also because the photographer used a wide angle lens. It disproportionate the actual measures and length to give even more effect to the pic :)
Load More Replies...It could have been easier to fake the position on a horizontal surface and then just rotate the pic for 90 degrees! :-)
What the photographer does is sometimes more dangerous than what the climber himself does, and this is a well known fact.
That's How It Looks Like In Real Life
Every good photo is edited, this is not a lie. It has been done since the days of film.
That would have been a lie with a fake hand attached to a selfie stick
Def saved money not needing to hire a arm model by using his own lol
The Illusion Of Different Spaces
I think the term is "Cucciloris", "cookie" for short. An opaque panel placed in front of a spotlight with a pattern cut into it. Old stage lighting trick.
Close-ups Of Snowflakes
Why is this fake? This is a legitimate way to achieve a good macro picture of ice...
I think the one who chooses the pictures for this list has another definition for "lie" than I. When I saw that, I thought it was a plastic-flake. But it seems to be a real one, so I don't see why it is a lie. Maybe they should rename the thread in "pictures and how they were made", would fit better, I think.
The only thing fake here is that they are not showing the lights required to make this degree of macro photography work.
Dreamy Effect
I think the art of doing it with as little post production processing is a skill. Anyone can just throw a filter on there
Load More Replies...I think it is quite interesting what effects you can get by some simple tricks
Cokin has been making a wide variety of camera lens filters for 40 years. cokin-diff...346c37.jpg
We used to smear Vaseline on the lense way back, heck of a clean up after though.
Wedding Photography
Underwater Dog
This isn't a lie! Most of these aren't lies! It's getting a bit frustrating now :/
Background Trick
The sharp border between the floor and background gives this away, though ;)
Perfume On A Glassy Surface
HAHAHA i burst out laughing at your comment.

In my humble opinion, all this entire post does is give away proprietary techniques (essentially trade secrets) on how certain images are achieved... The photographers who created these images spent many man hours planning and setting up these images which, for many, are their means of making a living. Giving away information like this (which is, incidentally, actually protected by copyright - copyrights don't just protect the image but also the techniques and methods used to create it) essentially removes the creative process - all so that some blogger could make a name for themselves... just like sitting in the audience of a magic show and ruining it for the rest of the audience by telling them how the magician performs his illusions...
Umbrella
Underwater Photoshoot
I guess it might be in the atmosphere, the picture doesn't imply there is a freaking workbench nearby, so there might be a lie there.
Load More Replies...How can her hair stay so beautiful under water. When I am under water, it will become a mess
How Mountains Landscape Photos Are Made Of
I've seen real life pictures just like this... why go through all that work?
Because the picture is incidental, not the goal. The whole idea was to create a fake landscape that nonetheless could pass for real, which, as you can imagine, is really hard to do. It's the same guy with the tornado, by the way. I don't know why so many are people so confused about this.
Load More Replies...Levitation Shoot
Lol so they just cut out the end of the dress where it's tied to hold up.. i don't like that they added a fake floating chair post production
It's likely not fake. The in process shot shows from an angle where you won't see it, but someone is likely holding that chair off camera. It's just lit with a different light source and it makes it look post edited. lol
Load More Replies...Volcano Photography
he didn't want to burn his tripod or his feet like the other photographer!
Flour Photoshoot
Still fascinating pictures. And I feel pity for the charwoman who has to clean up the mess
I don't think this is flour because that as the problem of fire balls (with flour dust and a high voltage falsch you can create explosions without explosion in movies...)
Macro Photography
From my humble experience, he's more like super focused to get the focus right :)
Load More Replies...Why would this be 'the biggest lie ever'? What else you'd expect?
I think they should rename that list of pictures in "Photos and how they were made", it would fit better. There are much pictures which aren't a fake.
Load More Replies...Whoever did these has a different meaning of "lie" than everyone else
I give up. Most are these are not fake. I'll just look at the photos.
am i missing something here because the artist is up close and personal with a dragonfly so not a lie
I dont understand the consept of lie in any of these pictures.. i see countles methods to create awesome, cool, touching and even fun to watch pictures.. you cannot levitate, fly or make your baby bounce, but as in these kind of nature pictures of one of the small wonders - they are not fake. Unless someone thought that dragonfly took a selfie..

Surrealistic Photoshoot In The Sea
At first, I thought they were holding bras hahaha!
Load More Replies...Lol--well obviously the jellyfish aren't real!!
Load More Replies...I like it how she looks so full of energy, and he seems kinda exhausted in the behinds the scenes picture.
Yes, my first thought was also, what a beautiful woman, what a beautiful smile. She exudes such a positive attitude, it's a joy to look at this picture.
Load More Replies...Aurora Borealis
This is a lie only if you can't travel to a Nordic country where you can actually witness a superb aurora borealis.
Though much travelling to Norway and Sweden, I never experienced it!
Sinking Photography
Baby Photography
I feel like this post should be called "Behind the scenes of photography.... not this b******t clickbait title of lies.
oh dear god, NO!!! The baby is supposed to be held by a parent, who is later photoshopped out of the frame. This is the worst possible way to get that visual effect. Parents, please don't do this to your baby. You probably wouldn't be comfortable dropping an infant onto a small thin pillow under any other circumstances, so don't risk it for a cute photo that could be easily recreated with a bit of photoshop.
That's probably the Father holding it with the Mother RIGHT there only just out of the shot but perfectly within arms reach. Not to mention, that's a sling - like what Mothers strap their children to themselves with, the chances of him/her falling out are very very very slim.

Romantic Couple Photoshoot
I really don't understand why the title of this post is so negativistic. It's not a lie, it's actually ART.
I agree.. it should rather have been titled: "Behind the scenes"
Load More Replies...why is it a lie? he used a telephoto lens, it's noting wrong with that. More like "behind the scenes"
The lie here? The two are not really a romantic couple. In fact, they were enemies. LOL
Every fucken photo shoot is a lie. I don't need to look at nature photo as a photo shoot. Your f**k up technology has f**k it.
Capturing The Hummingbirds With 3d Camera
Also, those poor birds would be 1, scared AF 2, blown away by the octocopter
Load More Replies...The one on the right is all like "Woah! I don't like you like that!!"
A Long-Exposure Picture While Zooming Out
This is spinning Christmas lights, no zooming? A longer than normal exposure, yes but I'm not buying the zooming thing.
Zooming would result in a blurry-a*s-hell photo, so I agree.
Load More Replies...Dreaming Of Flying
I've lost count of how many times this article had included different examples of this very same effect.
I don't envy the model in that picture. She must be very athletic, holding the tension of her body for that picture. Think she will has muscle ache the next day
Bokeh Hearts
Again, SAME EFFECT we saw earlier with the city reduced to a field of hearts.
I have a very similar shot on my site of Tower Bridge in London. Check out timglasbyphotos.com or Insta @timglasbyphotos and let me know what you think.
The Seashore
THere's aren't lies but methods to take creative photos. The lie is in the modeling, post-production world that suggests models have "perfect" skin, hair, waist, legs, arms, chest, etc. While many techniques are about creative utility., there is still a heavy focus on Photoshopping the subject until they're not human anymore. When the production team want's you to believe it's reality, where as these are artists wanting you to dream with them and believe, while understanding it's not real. It's analogous to "psychics" & magicians.
I would call the photos of the aurora borealis and all the fake landscapes lies but still cool
Load More Replies...Thank you Bored Panda! I found some really helpful tricks here! :)
I'll have a whole new perception of photos and a better understanding of how they might have been created, after seeing this post. Thank you Bored Panda!
It shows that a hell of a lot of work and thought goes into one photo. Anybody who thinks that photos tell a 'truth' is an idiot, anyway. The framing and the choice of camera angle leave very little that is 'real'
Right! Photos are always subjective. They show the photographers reality or what he wants others to think it's real!
