30 Service Workers Share The Trashiest Tips They’ve Ever Gotten
Anyone who has worked in customer service and interacted with a fair share of strangers on a daily basis knows how tiring it can be. Waiters and bartenders are no exception; they are fully aware of how much resilience it takes to smile at someone while they curse at you, complaining about (trivial) things that are out of your control. The job demands character and deserves proper recognition. Yet their salary is often so low, they have to rely on tips just to get by.
Sadly, some sleazy customers use tipping just as another way of disrespecting the staff serving them. For example, people leave fake money with a picture of their preferred presidential candidate. Or put a few bills inside a full glass and place it upside down, so the only way to clean the table is to make a mess. In fact, people have developed so many of these dirty tactics, Bored Panda decided to make a list, showing what not to do when you get your check. Continue scrolling and take a look.

Leaving This For Your Waitress, Who Has No Say In The Mask Mandate
That's how you create the new generations of idiots. Total idiots, not only covidiots
Interestingly, a relatively new study has found that demanding jobs offering employees little control are among the most detrimental people's mental and physical health.
Scientists at Southern Medical University in Guangzhou, China, analyzed the data of over 138,700 participants from six previous studies on job-related health. Using this information, they classified jobs into four groups based on control and how psychologically demanding the role: low demand and low control jobs such as manual labour were labelled "Passive," while jobs with high control like architects and scientists were "Low Stress," and jobs with both high demand and high control (teachers or doctors) were "Active."
Here's A Tip, It's Trashy As Hell To Leave Fake Money As A Tip That Advertises Your Candidate
The category labelled "High Stress" had jobs that were demanding offered low levels of control. Enter waiters and bartenders
Scientists found that waiters and waitresses have a 22% higher risk of stroke on average than those with low stress jobs. The figure jumps to 33% for women when you differentiate data by gender.
The research explained that while those holding down jobs we often consider demanding jobs like architects and scientists may seem like prime candidates for boiling blood pressure, work-related stress is largely dependent on whether or not you have a job where you feel in control and respected.
A neurosurgeon may be drained after a long, difficult day at work but they probably know society understand's the value of their labor. But imagine running in and out of the kitchen for 12 hours, bringing people food and ensuring they have a good time, only to have someone say "fu*k you" instead of leaving you a tip.

A lot of these situations could be remedied by closing the minimum wage loophole. Tipping for great service vs tipping for their basic income.
Exactly! The minimum wage for tipped service people is 2.13 an hour, and it hasn't been raised in years. But call for the minimum wage to be a living wage, and right -wingers knee-jerk blab rubbish about $20 tacos and robots working in restaurants.
Although a lot of them go overboard they aren't entirely wrong about prices. Take a look at what things like apartment rent has done Every time minimum wage increases. Unless you cap businesses who's costs Aren't majorly impacted by minimum wage. All raising it does is make them decide "Oh I can have more money from people." Funny thing is it's usually the right wing nuts who raise those prices then wonder why the complaints continue.
I am a knee-jerk nut job who thinks minimum wage solves nothing, but taking away the special category service staff find themselves in seems the only way to fairly solve this.

Mandating a minimum wage only makes the numbers higher, it doesn't actually do what we'd want it to ( benefit the workers). Minimum wage is the level of water, and the cost of food, clothes, housing, etc are buoys on that water. The higher the water, the higher the buoys. Where minimum wage becomes particularly harmful is when businesses start importing (many times illegally) immigrants who can be exploited to take the place of American workers because they don't want to pay the cost of an American workers.
It still doesn't give people the right to treat waiters or waitress like crap, I was actually sick reading this, How can a person treat another person like that?
It doesn’t, no, but Americans have complained about this for decades, yet when Hillary Clinton promised to get rid of the $2/hour tipped minimum wage, I saw hardly any Americans talking about it, even in primarily Democrat areas of the internet. It gets so frustrating as a non-American to keep reading sick s**t like this and then watch Americans take no interest in changing it. Leaving it to consumers to self govern is causing stuff like this to happen, so what is the US going to do to fix that?

Did any of these service people share the other side of the story? I bet not everyone of these was a case of the customer being the arsehole.
That is true, for sure. But still, nothing can give a permission to be absolutely d**k to others, some of those are psychopathic level.

Another problem is that in most states, if a business pays a full wage, it is illegal to allow servers to accept tips. Supposedly it would make it harder to tax tips. As if everyone reports what they actually make anyway. BTW, as quite a few learned this year, it is always best to report everything you earn in a tipped position. You will be grateful for that little bit extra you had to pay in taxes when your unemployment is based on the actual wage you made and not the bare minimum many report. What you report also affects your credit rating, workman's comp pay, social security pension......
We don't have minimum wages in Denmark. Just powerful unions...
I think you're going the wrong way on that. You don't REWARD horrible decisions with more money. What we need to do is replace them with iPads and some sort of "cable-car plate delivery system", and let their useless asses starve. To be honest, the like $3 an hour they "earn" now is far too high. For God's sake, their literal job is to carry plates from one side of the room to the other. They don't make the menu, they don't make the food, they don't even wash the dishes. They carry other people's work. That's it. They are remarkably overpaid already.
Please, just wait tables for 2 months and come back and say that. We do way more than you think, often in crap conditions, while dealing with crap customers. What is truly sad, even at $2.13 + tips, I still made more than a lot of people paying off loans for a BA degree. Please remember, we are the ones who insure that you get what you order, in a timely manner, proper temp, etc. we are the caretakers of your food, from the moment we describe or answer your questions regarding the menu items, to correctly putting it into the POS, to communicating with the often drunk or high cooks, to inspecting and approving your food before bringing it out. And, while I've never stooped to this, before showing your attitude to the next server, you would be amazed at the disgusting things I have seen hateful customers unknowingly chow down on.
Because you can't carry a plate yourself, obviously.
Monsters aren't real...just like those excuses. Check your sources.

My rule: Do not eat out if I cannot also afford to tip 15-20%. It's a shame that it's even legal to pay waitstaff less than minimum wage and force them to rely on tips as well. Another great job, USA (sarcasm).
As a Brit tipping is something I rarely do, I would just not think of tipping because you pay your staff a living wage in civilised countries...

Having to tip is fine.. (well not really).. I plan to do it in US since outsiders have to accept local customs. But isn't it atrocious that on average we should give more amount than standard tax percentage (10%)?
Here's the case Mr. Roger, I am aware you small minded people tend to judge someone like me on notion as if I am such a petty human being who doesn't want to pay more for anything if it is possible... but that's just shows that your own self is a mean-spirited guy. You make this personal without no reason. Look, who said I don't want to tip at all? I am genuinely questioning the portion, I thought it makes sense that if we must tip, then at most-- The percentage doesn't exceed 10% regular tax and therefore, of course the wage per hour given from business owners to servers need to be adjusted accordingly. If you read my other comment, I stated that the system is wrong not the people. Unless "jr." in your name indicates that you're not even an adult yet, maybe try smarter instead of harder next time.

Actually, if a server does not make minimum wage after their regular wage and tips, the employer must supplement their pay to ensure they get the state minimum wage. However, this is hard to track and I don't think a lot of servers or employers actually do that.
15-20 %?! Wow. Eating out = only for the rich? Glad I live in Sweden were we don't have to tip.

It's a silly system you guys are running in the US. On my first restaurant visit there I forgot to tip and the waitress followed me outside and demanded what was wrong with the service. I told her nothing was wrong and I just forgot because we don’t tip in my country. Judging by her look she didn't believe me. Anyway, I tipped her and felt pretty s***ty about the whole experience.
Reverse here. I started to leave a tip to someone in the EU and she got super-offended, and I had to stammer "Es tut mir leid! Ich komme aus den USA! Es ist unsere Gewohnheit!" (which is my A-1 German for I'm sorry! I'm from the US. It's our custom/habit").... She calmed and said something I understood to be "Oh, no problem, thank you for apologizing." (Or she cursed me to a life of doom. My German does suck.)
Leo, I think she was just worried that you forgot your change 😄
I gave my usual 20% tip and the person was really upset. I learned later that 10% is okay, whereas in the US, that's "cheap"... And in Germany, that particular place took it to mean they aren't good to their workers, I guess. (Like I said, A-level German.)
Just out of curiosity, how much did you tip? I live in Germany and usually the waiters are gratefull and happy about the tip. It usually means that food/service was great.
That's so rude to follow a customer bcos he/she didn't tip. So some think it's compulsory! But it's not! There's no effing law. But there is a min wage law! So the gov is corrupt and is the wrong one, and tipping only enables the gov to continue.

Actually, most of these are very rude, selfish, or outright stupid. The problem, however, is that serice workers in the US rely on tips. If tips would come as a small bonus for over-average service (or a bit more for outstanding service) while salaries would be in alignment with the job's duties, these kind of problems would not even exist. TL/DR: tips are not meant as a salary replacement but as a bonus to a decent salary.
Why does the compulsory tip system exist, just increase food prices so that people can actually get paid properly
Biden has promised to do that! So in theory, they’ll be switching to full wages some time between late January 2021 and early November 2024. Hallelujah. Americans have complained about stuff like this for decades and it’s finally changing.
As a server, I made $20-$100 per hour on tips. Minimum wage is $7.25 (back then, it was $4.50. Who is going to wait tables for $7.25/hour? It is long, hard, dirty work. Your clothing begins to smell like food, even when washed. Your feet ache. The hours are terrible. Tips make it worth doing.
The various establishments want their meal prices to look like a bargain. Sigh! If they paid a decent wage to begin with thees poor people wouldn't get stiffed, and people like 'I'm a single mother' wouldn't have excuses to fall back on; they'd have to pay the bill.
I have never understood why servers in America have to rely on tips to live, why can't they just be paid a normal wage? Minimum wage at the absolute least. It's repulsive.
It actually goes back to the 'gentry' who had live-in servants. They weren't paid jack because they received room, board and clothing. When Restaurants first cropped up, the people doing the waiting were all family. When they ha to start hiring, most customers looked down on *all* 'hired help', and said help was usually just there to find a husband, so it was felt they didn't have to pay very much. And it became custom, and eventually was grandfathered into the wage system 'because we can't afford anything more. We'd have to close.' (We still hear that, BTW.) Now it looks as if this will finally be addressed. I hope so.
This is true of the majority of restaurants in the US, but I doubt the servers at higher-end restaurants want to ditch the tipping system. They make six-figure salaries from tips alone.
Six figure salaries?? Even the executive chefs don't get that.
No they don't.
This wouldn't even be a subject of discussion if waiters in America received a decent salary... 😂 And many people out there wouldn't have to work 2 or 3 jobs just to "get by"...

Honestly tipping culture itself is sh*tty. It triggers "pettiness" image from customers and some kind of beggar mentality from service workers. I'm not saying the people are wrong, the system is.
It's just the same as the US healthcare system. Everyone is talking about how outrageous it is, but no one is making any effort to change it.
It's not that there's no effort to change it; it's that we need a more coordinated effort rather than the sporadic, usually localized efforts we've been getting. And it needs to have a louder, more focused voice to it. Most people don't realize there's a problem. Truth is, the living wage doesn't keep up with inflation. For every 1% increase in wages that the majority of John Q. Public receives, inflation will have gone up 5-8% at least three times, sometimes 4.
This comment has been deleted.
Do you know, exactly, any pointers on how to start changing the entire healthcare system of one of the largest countries in the world without harming anybody or making the system worse? Because if you think it's so easy I would love to know how you think we can do it right.
Actually it is, send people to Europe to learn how government is done, because the root problem in the US is not just the very rudimentary health system it is the underlying political and social structures that allows such a health system to exist.
Ray Heap +
It is simple. First you elect people in government who aren't absolute shyteholes when it comes to looking out for their voters. Next you give them carte blanche to reorganize the current capitalist system of profiting from the sick to a system where healthcare is a right for anyone regardless of their income, social status, race, religion, gender or sexual preferences or whatever other criteria you think off. Next you enjoy a life without any worries about medical bills. Like the rest of the world.
In my country there is no thing as tipping system. Tipping is something someone does if they want to be polite and are thankful for the service they got. The majority doesn't tip and that's acceptable. But what i ve just read in this post is just rude and insulting.
All the fake money ones can be classed as criminal acts by using counterfeit money to pay for goods and services and these people should be reported and charged. Not only would the staff get the last laugh but when it gets known what happens with these scams, they will most likely stop.
This is so rude. That people even rely on tips to just survive is more than only rude, this is what makes you realize you live in an effed up society that employs totally wrong values and maybe even is proud of it - see the healthcare discussions in the US to gain further reasons to vomit. People work. Pay them. Tip should be an extra they have on top of a sufficient wage.
1st of all - why should I tip every time. This is an option and a customer goodwill. In Europe/ Spain we tip only if we are really satisfied with the service. 2nd - we do not know how the service was. May be the waiter was rude, we see only the bill posted from the waiter.
I'm not American and tipping isn't part of our norm here (new zealand), but I'm pretty sure in America they rely on tips to make ends meet, their employer essentially underpay them because they will "get tips to make up the shortfall". It's a silly system I agree, but if I was in America (or any other country where tipping is customary) then I would tip, even if its just for that reason alone (that the system means they need the tip)
In the USA wait staff are paid next to nothing and rely on tips for their wages, which is a totally messed up system but what isn't totally messed up in that country? In Canada wait staff are paid the provincial servers minimum wage (around $12-$15/hr) but tipping is also customary typically 10-20%, I've only ever not tipped a hand full of times and it was due to really bad service or bad food etc.
Lol I swear I didn’t steal you post, I posted a very similar response, but didn’t read yours!
Stay there. You follow custom depending on what country you're in.
In America, waiters are paid pretty close to minimum wage, and as a result, rely on tips to survive, in most countries, it isn’t that way, but by god, some of the tips here are just awful.
Stay in Spain then, cheapskate.
Oh calm down, different countries have different norms, and you should respect them.

Well genius servers in America make three or four dollars an hour. Way below the minimum wage period so they rely on tips. That's how they make a living. so when you don't tip while you're here you're being a piece of s**t.
I never put my tip on my receipt; I always give cash so I write "Given in Cash".
Or maybe move to Australia where you actually get paid a decent wage and tipping system is nonexistent since people don't need it
I would love to get out of America.
Not many people can move to another country just like that. Take children out of school, spouse or partner leave their job, and they all have to leave other family and friends to go to a place where they don't know anyone.
So confused is it mandatory to tip in the us.
Pretty much. Minimum wage is $7.25 an hour in some places, and (from what I’ve heard) often restaurants will pay their staff like $2.50 an hour, plus what they make in tips.
Pretty much. Yes.
Sue Simmons ?
While it is not mandatory as such, it's mandatory morally because we know the servers aren't getting anything close to a real wage. This is only in the food service realm. In hotels and such, tipping is--not expected, but appreciated. People generally leave $1 a night, so the cleaning staff night get $2 for your weekend. This says you appreciate the work they did to keep your room clean. Some people don't tip the hotel service staff anything; others think their work should be at least noticed. People do enjoy their hard work being noticed, and money talks. In every industry but food service, tipping is a way of saying 'you did a great job.' But in restaurants, for some reason, the people working the hardest are screwed sideways.
It’s pretty close to required, the servers make very little, so tips are a friendly “hey, I understand your job is essential, and you make next to nothing, so here’s a thank you for your work.”
It's not mandatory. It's expected.
People in America only make three or four dollars an hour when they're a server usually. So they rely on tips to live.
So basically republicans don't tip. Shocking.
daveej yes
Having lived in the US (my boyfriend is American) and being from Australia (where tipping is not a thing) its not like the meals are that cheap (sans tip) anyway in the US so wtf. It's more expensive for me to eat out in America than it is in Australia. US-ians say say giving restaurant workers minimum wage means its going to be 20 dollar tacos and blah blah blah but food doesn't cost that much here in Australia and we give them a min wage. It feels like entitled owners that don't want to give up their massive slice of the pie, they feel like they are entitled to all the money they make *cough*likeJeffBezos*cough* and the s**t kickers doing all the hard work deserve sweet FA. Tipping culture sucks. I feel like its an excuse to get other people to pay the workers you're supposed to be providing for. I really hope Biden gets rid of it.
I feel bad about seeing these receipts with no tip because it makes me think of all of the times that I don't leave a tip on my card, but leave one in cash instead. I write "0" in the tip line and leave the cash behind the bill. I know when I was a server, I appreciated cash tips. I would hate to see my receipt on here with someone claiming I didn't tip when I left 20 -30% in cash.
Just write the word cash in the tip section when you do that. That way there's no confusion
It also eliminates the possibility that the server tells the rest of the staff that they got stiffed and then pockets the tip because they’re supposed to tip out the staff that supported them. Bar, kitchen, front of house. I used to get irritated when a patron would tuck cash into the servers hand on the sly and tell them it was just for them. That patron had no clue how much other people helped that server get their food to them because they didn’t interact with any of them. Don’t do that. Leave your tips on the table or on the bill where they belong
Yes, yes. WE KNOW THE SYSTEM IS MESSED UP!!But it's the system that exists, and it's not the server's fault! If you can afford to eat out at a sit-down restaurant, you can afford to tip. Otherwise, go to McDonald's.
USA is a great country, but the concept of tipping is simply ridiculous.
There's that brilliant post on Tumblr which basically says "You can't denigrate people for their jobs while simultaneously demanding a service". The US system of woeful underpayment on the basis of tips is messed up, but it is what it is and if you can't tip, don't insist on a service.
Little Wonder haha
Most of the none-tippers are human failures.. Sometimes I hate people..
So, I worked as a waitress for a short time when I was attending university. Nothing even remotely close to these things ever happened to me. People are usually respectful. Also, i didnt receive tips because in italy waiters are paid a full salary and dont have to rely on customers for that.
what a shitty country when the salary of low-income employee depend of assholes.
I really wish I would have had these hateful m****r f...kers sit at my table when I was a server because I just loved giving extra special treats to the non tippers. Oh and believe me servers always remember who are!!!
1) If you can't afford to tip (in the US) you can't afford to eat out. 2) We don't dine in (covid) but we tip 30 - 40% for take out. Times are hard. Help people out.
How I hate people.
People are infuriating!
US and the whole tipping thing is pretty absurd. They need to just pay people properly so this crap would not happen.
Cenk Karaferya ?
I'm so glad I live in a country that doesn't have this tipping culture.
So then what about hair stylists? I tip mine 20% which adds another 40 dollars to my bill. Yikes! If we don't tip the minimum recommendation of 15%, then we are terrible people and I'm surely going to get my hair "accidentally" cut too short or burned off! Or my stylist will basically fire me because I'm a crappy tipper. (Which I'm not) But basically being forced to tip at least 15% for whatever kind of service I'm provided, good or bad, can be quite annoying sometimes
What these people do, is awful! I have come back with tip and a bit extra in it, when I didn’t have a tip. BESIDES, it’s not the wait staffs fault if the food is bad, it’s the kitchen or cooks or chef. They get a pay check that is more than the wait staff! Don’t make the waitress or waiter pay for your unhappiness with the food.
Being a Vietnam Vet, it angers me to see that some vets thinks their service to our country should be used for a tip to a waitress or waiter who are making below minimum wage and depend on their tips to live on.

A lot of people mistakenly think that tipping a waiter/waitress is for excellent service; they don't get that it's what you OWE someone for performing a service. It's as if you could decide yourself how much the "labor" part of your auto-repair bill comes to. Also, if you GET bad service, (slow service, poor attention), it's often that there's a breakdown that's adding stress to the waitstaff's jobs. It sucks to work harder and in poorer conditions and get paid less to do it! 15% is the MINIMUM, not for exceptional service. (I've had to explain that in person to older people.) I just wish we could do without the obvious fake crap inserted to push agendas.
I still don't understand why restaurant won't pay their servers well, like hourly rate. It is ridiculous.
Less money in the servers' wage slips means more money in theirs, unless they're a little mom and pop restaurant where they're holding on by the skin of their teeth. (Although, honestly, I don't know if there are any of those left. No, we have one 6 blocks from my house. Father cooks, Mom waits on tables, and the kids are small enough to be underfoot. And someone will try to get them for child labor when the girl's old enough to help off and on. I eat there --and leave a damned good tip!--whenever I can.
Why would you sell food (or anything) at a price that doesn't cover your employees wages? Never got that.
Money, money, money. Oh, yes, and money. Because they can. Stupidity. Lack of morals. And, of course, money.

Just put up the prices by 10% and then divide the increased revenue among the waiting staff. How difficult can it be?
Th closings during the pandemic just might do it, but I fear it will go the other way. "We don't make enough; we *can't* give our waitstaff anything more." I'm afraid it's going to literally take an act of Congress, and with Moscow Mitch there, don't hold your breath. Serving staff is beneath his notice--besides, he likes hurting people.
Too horribly mean.
And they wonder why the food taste funny or off the next time they come in.
i think it's bad that people get disgruntled when they don't tip. here in austria, tipping is voluntary, and you are not exposed on the internet if you don't give anything away. america is such a messed up country.
So much fakeness. And no mention of the cash tips.
Those people who tip, cash or otherwise, weren't the point of this . *They* fulfilled their responsibility; they don't need to be shamed. In short words, they ain't cheap, and nothing would be said about the zero in the tip line.
When I visited America back in 2011 (I'm Australian), my father and I made a point of getting a local friend to carefully explain how to tip properly. We got pretty good at calculating the percentage. (Here, people only leave tips as a compliment/gift).
People can be such utter scumbags!
Kashmir Good response!
Fingers crossed that an asteroid takes care of all those people.
This was so depressing, I couldn't even finish it. Some people are just pure garbage. I sincerely hope that some of the "get a real job" tippers lose their present jobs and are forced to wait tables or scrub toilets for a living.
I REALLY dislike the passive aggressive nature of many of these examples... petty individuals taking out their gripes on those who don't deserve it. I usually get good to excellent service when dining out and I am not going to stiff the server on their tip (I'm in the UK). If the service were terrible I would raise the issue long before the meal ended, speaking to the manager/owner if necessary and giving them the chance to rectify the situation. I am an adult and responsible for my own behaviour.
I have a question. I don't live in the USA, so I wonder why people have to write the tip on the receipt. I have never ever done that in my entire life, and I'll turn 40 next year. Is it because so many people in the USA pay with a credit/debit card?
Yes
Ah. Thanks!
They don't have to, and in many cases if they tip in cash, it's because the management is, um, a little squirrelly, shall we say? about the tips. There are some places where they basically charge the servers to work there. All of the tip money goes into a pool, and at the end of the week they split it evenly, with the restaurant taking their cut of the tips earned. (Which I hope is illegal, but the restaurant business is itself a little squirrelly, so you never know. God knows it's morally wrong. So is pooling the tips like that--the really good workers, who bust their buns every moment, shouldn't be pain towards the lackluster ones.)

I got through 10 before I realized humans are literally the s**t of the earth
Just end the tip system! It is ridiculous and we in America are the only ones who do this and it started during prohibition as a bribe. I hate the tip system, absolutely think it is detrimental to servers. You gotta raise the cost of food then...by what, 20%. It ensures a regular and dependable wage. Also, if we are keeping the tip system then I am not going to tip terrible servers. 99% of the time I tip 20% but on the rare occasions I have bad service then why not take advantage of such a terrible system and save your money by not tipping. Hate the whole thing.
Researchers believe that becoming wealthier actually makes you less empathetic. "Wealth and abundance give us a sense of freedom and independence from others. The less we have to rely on others, the less we may care about their feelings." Why Earning More Means Caring Less, According to Science. https://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/the-science-of-scrooge-why-wealth-kills-empathy.html
That might be true, but if you're not wealthy it's also easier to believe this "research" right away. And that includes me, btw.
I do take exception to this. It really seems to be the upper middle income people and not the super wealthy people who are the biggest d***s. It’s the people who want to APPEAR to be really rich you know what I mean? The really rich people I’ve ever worked for have usually been decent and actually really generous while those at a little lower bracket (still way above me) want everyone to think they’re......well, think Donald Trump. Ostentatious and gross displays.
All these people deserved to be digested slowly by gulons to be used as plant fertilizer.
The only time I did something like this was before I had a job waiting tables. I ordered and specifically asked for no pickles multiple times and the burger came with pickles. I put the condiment drenched pickles with her tip.( a 20 btw). I also left a tip on the table when newly stationed in Japan and had a waitress running down the street, money in hand like I left my glasses case or something
Fun fact: One of indicators that someone is narcissist psychopath is that he/she behaves really nasty to the waiters, doormen and other such service providing people (while sucking up to people in higher social positions in contrast). So when you are in restaurant with someone who does such bs as the things in this list, there is a very high possibility that the person is narcissist and it is better to run away very quickly.
You see that a lot of these people were accompanied by their wives/gf's/whole family. None of them stood up for the waitresses.
IF you have an issue with a server, mention it politely as you pay, or go e-mail the company, but do not not not do this crap. Or, y'know, let them work at a living wage?
If you show up for lunch at a restaurant on a weekday, please tip your server well. I worked this shift and not only is it practically dead this time of day, the few people who do show up usually tip terribly (if at all). I left most days having made less than minimum wage.
Had to stop at 13. to many jerks.
Jesus f*****g christ, What is with these people? If I eat out I always expect to tip and factor that in to how much I'm going to spend.
I wouldn't dream of not tipping here. This is how my server is going to eat!

That's great, but it doesn't address the issue.

I am amazed of many of the comments here. That people who cannot afford tips, should stay home. So someone who has saved money for months can finally pay dinner for her kids, should be punished for trying her best. Really? Women really get double punished. Whatever they do, they are not good enough. If they would not take their kids out, she would be a bad mother instead. I feel sick from some comments. Have some empathy, people, please.
The server may very well have kids too. Having kids isn't an excuse to treat others poorly. Empathy goes both ways.
So wait an extra week, and bring enough for a tip. First, it's not like you don't know it's needed. second, how would you like it if *your* kid went without because of someone like that? And no, she's not a bad mother if she didn't take her kids out to eat. I knew mothers (single and otherwise) who didn't eat out because they just couldn't afford it! That's as bad as saying I *have* to buy a car because my children don't want to walk two blocks. Mom can cook--*she* doesn't want to.
As a European, tipping always baffles me. I shouldn't be obligated to provide a living wage to servers. Do something about it, instead of whining on the internet.
But the squalor of it! Wages yes, but the most disgusting thing is about rat race participants propping themselves higher on that ladder and teasing their self-esteem... Crumbs.
