Dutch Guy Was Annoyed By The Trash On His Way To Work So He Did This:
Tommy Kleyn, a guy in the Netherlands, has showed us just how easy it is to volunteer in your community. He cleaned up a heavily polluted waterfront on his way to work, and all he had to do was wake up half an hour earlier every day until the trash was all gone.
After he posted the images on Facebook, he even got some help from his friends. All it took was filling up one garbage bag at a time until the work was done!
More info: Facebook
“Everyday, I ride my bicycle to work along the river bank. It’s a nice route to ride, except for one part.”
“A stretch of the river bank is covered in plastic bottles and other pieces of (mainly) plastic trash.”
“This is the littered part”:
“The trash annoyed me very much, so, I decided to start picking them up.”
“It took me about 30 minutes to fill one garbage bag with trash.”
“But, one bag doesn’t really make a dent in an area as polluted as this.”
“I vowed to fill one bag of trash each day I passed the spot.”
“The area between the arrows was clean at this point. This is the progress made in only 6 days”
“I shared my experiences on Facebook and now, over 180 people ‘like’ the project”
“A lot of people were all like ‘There should be more people like you!'”
“And there were: this is my friend Rick helping out”
The Contrast
“The location was next to a bike path, and quite a few people got off their bikes and said what a great initiative this was.”
“The trash tried to communicate with me”
“The last garbage bag”
“In 22 bags of trash, this is the only item I deemed worth keeping.”
“The idea is to motivate people to fill one garbage bag with litter each year.”
“It only takes 30 minutes, it really makes a difference and you will be amazed about how good you’ll feel afterwards.”
“An Eurasian Coot started nesting in the part which I cleaned.”

Load More Replies...Every spring in Vermont, we have Green Up Day, a Saturday when thousands of us walk along our roads and pick up litter. It's fun .
should be at least once a week, but is a really good initiative :) we do the same here
Load More Replies...I do this by the river near my apt. I grab trash bags and set off on my bike. Wen I see stuff I grab it until the bags are full.
I started doing the same at work, 1 bag a day. They all laughed, now they help me.
Great! it is an example that when something bothers you, you can do something about it and not wait that someone else does it for you.
I love it when people take responsibilty for their environment, even though they weren't the ones who made the mess. Well done, looks amazin
The last picture made me cry. Such a simple restoration project and five new beings and their Mom find a home.
Great job! In norway we have an annual day for clearing beaches, with its own day and a campaign page on Facebook.
This is so awesome! By you doing this you not only help clean up a polluted area but you also help a coot find a nice home . So precious .
Make this world a better one... Start doing it yourself. I pick up every day at least 2 pieces of plastic from the street
I need a motivating excercise plan - our house is on a busy pedestrian path. Guess what!
Ah we could all learn from him. Goed zo, u bent een pracht mens! Natuur werkt hard mee om het te brengen zo als het vroeger was.
Great that he did it. It would be even better if we could really get through to people not to throw away carelessly in the first place!
Great guy but we pay a fortune in Council Tax every year in the UK to pay people to do this job. Shouldn't have to do it ourselves.
government is inherently corrupt. it is unreasonable to expect anything more than the little that they allow us to keep. through selfless service we are redeemed in the eyes of the Lord and we bring peace and joy to the ones we love and all the creatures of the earth.
Load More Replies...This is how things get done, people who get proactive and empower themselves to get something done is how things get done
Lot of respect, great action, must not be necessary if everyone would dispose of its waste and not just throw in the environment
the corruption of the world has one root cause and it is what plagues the majority of mankind and is unlikely to ever be remedied, namely the problem of ignorance. but it is incumbent upon those of us who have compassion to forgive them for their ignorance. if they knew what they were doing, they wouldn't do it. nobody in their heart wants to make the world worse. it may seem like some people do, but that is just the outward appearance of their psychological processes which are plagued by ignorance stemming from any number of factors. and to top it all off, the power structures of the world feed on our ignorance and so they feed it with copious lies whenever and wherever they can.
Load More Replies...I love it!! - however, he kept referring to to trash? most of it was plastic and recyclable.
What I think? If people stops throwing their garbage put to start with then we wouldn't have poluted places like this. And I do applaud him.
Volunteerism at its best. This story got posted by Greenpeace International on Facebook and has reached 3.6 million people so far...
You are an inspiring person & have done a dull but incredibly valuable job! Thankyou from me (& from nature)! I will persist trying here ...
Nice one indeed. It's a pity there are so many slobs around to mess it all up again.
Love what you did. I have been thinking of cleaning up all our freeway exits there is so much trash But we need a National Campaign. Great!
Brilliant. I did something similar on my route to work. I found it terrible that people just walked past it. Now I pick it off the beach.
well done. you´re an example. and this is the best way to change things.
I think that the council should be paying people to do this. This is the reason that you pay your council tax, gementie belasting.
Every spring in Lithuania we also go out and start cleaning up. It is a very nice initiative, started in 2008. It is called "Let's Do It!"
Wonderful! Look what each human can do! But I think we need to make less rubbish in the first place.
Très bonne initiative! Si tout le monde pouvait être aussi responsable!
we need more people like him for sure.. i am going to share this video with my students. let the difference begin.
It would probably been easier for you to use a leaf rake to pull the trash out into the grass.
Another similar effort that needs to be praised https://twitter.com/temsutulaimsong
Well done those men, but will it stop the dirty swine throwing their rubbish there again ?.
Every april we have a project called 'spring cleaning' in our city. But there's still more than enough litter to pick up while out jogging..

I agree, we should all do our bit and the world would be a much nicer place to live in.
My husband,, 4 year son and I pick up trash & recyclables every time we walk our dogs.
The Eurasian Coot would have nested on the garbage too. Thank you for making her life better.
In Croatia school children dedicate few days in early spring to clean river banks. It makes a world of difference to the environment
Meinen Respekt. Viele denken so wie ,doch "wir" handeln nicht so ...!!!
Quite an idea and so easy to do that I'm a little ashamed I never thought of it and moved my a*s to do it. Thankfully it's not too late.
I did mine on the Rio Grande by Williamsburg NM last week. Well, I did two. And for Tommy I'm gonna go do two more from somewhere else.
My children and I have been doing the same for the 1000 metre stretch between our home and the school. It's looking good, and we feel proud
Hello from the Isle of man. You are caring kind and fantastic. People like you make the world a better place! Xx

Fantastic - but we can all do our little bit - I've (sadly) picked up plastic on my daily walks for years - so has my best friend :)
Respect! IF every human doing this on earth, at least we not annoyed by litter on side the river or street.
In Netherlands people also trash around?! :) I thought it's only Russian tradition
Interesting how many people "liked" it and said "there should be more people like you", but in reality none of them did something about it.

I do regular clean ups on our local river in Cape Town. When I have finished , it gives me a feel good factor. My good deed for the day.
What a great thing to do. If only everyone cared for their surroundings as much then a "project" it would be a way of life
Amazing and great job, even if I am a little ashamed that I didn't move my a*s to do the same before...
Great thing this man did! More people should do this type of thing when they notice trash. it take little effort!
