Video Showing Early Morning Sunbed Blockers Having Their Towels Taken Away By Staff At A 5-Star Tenerife Resort Sparks A Debate Online
When people say they are going on a vacation abroad, we usually imagine a warm country with beautiful beaches and palm trees in the background. To have the full relaxing experience, some of them don’t mind staying at a more luxurious hotel as they usually offer activities that can be accessed without leaving the hotel.
The most popular attractions in a hotel are probably the pools. The only problem is that they have limited space and they can’t fit all the guests at the same time. Some people have discovered a hack of putting their towels and other belongings on the sunbeds early in the morning when it’s still empty to ‘reserve’ them.
A woman noticed that the GF Hotels in Tenerife don’t care how early you get up to mark your territory and they just collect all the towels and personal belongings, freeing the sunbeds of them. The video that captured the staff taking away the towels went viral and people who saw it had some opinions.

Some people think they can save a sunbed by leaving a towel on it, but this resort takes its rules seriously

TikToker Amanda Proctor is on vacation in Tenerife, one of the most popular holiday destinations in Spain, and the woman is staying at the GF Gran Costa Adeje Hotel. It’s a 5-star hotel just half a kilometer away from the Playa Duque beach, it has a PSA and sport facilities as well. It also boasts 4 beautiful pools.
In places like this, pools are usually crowded and you may have to make a few circles around the pool to find some free sunbeds. While walking around, you could get false hope by seeing that nobody is sitting on the sunbed only to realize someone’s already using it because their towel is put on top.

There is a rule at the GF Gran Costa Adeje Hotel that you can’t ‘reserve’ a sunbed before 10am, but people do it anyway

So the staff just removes the towels and other belongings, freeing the sunbeds for other guests

The logical thing to assume is that the person went to get a drink or they are in the water wanting to cool off. But in some cases, the person is nowhere near the hotel and isn’t planning on returning for quite a while.
Tourists came up with the idea to put their towels on the sunbeds to make sure they will have a place to sit when the pool gets crowded. They usually get up earlier when there are plenty of sunbeds to choose from, leave their towels, bags or inflatables and maybe go back to bed or head to town.

It seems that quite a lot of people use this strategy, as the employee disappears in the pile of towels on his shoulders

However, many hotels have a rule that you can’t actually reserve sunbeds with towels before 10am. Some people may not be aware of it, while some may be ignoring it on purpose and leaving their towels anyway.
You might want to reconsider because as Amanda Proctor witnessed, the staff will collect those towels and other belongings if you are not actually there. She recorded a couple of videos and they really blew up on TikTok, the first one raking in 4.5 million views and the second one 2.7 million views.
People in the comments mostly thought that what the staff was doing was only fair while others questioned if they do this to guests who just left to use the restroom
In those videos you can see the staff going around and just piling up towels on their shoulders. Amanda gave a little bit more context in the comments, saying that the staff not only took the towels, but people’s belongings as well, so they left a note on the sunbed that said where guests could get their things back.
Amanda also said that she was filming those videos at about 9:30am, so the staff had the right to take everything away as the rule states there can be no sunbed reservations with the towel until 10am.
The TikToker felt that they were doing the right thing because it’s not fair that people who want to lay there at that moment can’t do that and the people who reserve the sunbeds don’t come back until noon or even later.
While responding to the comments, Amanda revealed that she was quite disappointed that she couldn’t catch the reactions of the guests when they returned as it was quite entertaining.
The majority of the people in the comments reacting to the videos agreed with Amanda and considered guests who reserve the sunbeds for hours and don’t use them to be rude and inconsiderate. Some people pointed out that this is not very thought out, because if you were actually using the bed but went for a swim, to buy yourself a drink or to go to the bathroom, it wouldn’t be very nice to come back to a note that your stuff has been removed.
We would like to hear your thoughts on this issue. Do you think that guests should be able to reserve sunbeds for themselves by leaving a towel? Do you think people who block sunbeds get what they deserve as it states in the video that there are signs prohibiting saving beds? Have you ever done this and had your things removed? Let us know your reactions in the comments!

Share on FacebookI think the issue here is people putting the towels before 10am. So for those comments that said what if they were at the toilet... unless you are in the toilet for hours, I doubt you will miss them taking the stuff after a quick toilet break. And funny how so many of them are all in the toilet, at such a convenient moment? The toilet queue must be round the block/pool? :D
For the toilet comments, I would think staff would observe who leave towels for longer than the few mins it takes to go to the loo.
Plus, I think they’re doing it before the pool opens for people who came down early and left their stuff, or dropped it there the night before. Poolside chairs should be first come first served anyway, especially since, as other commenters have said, a lot of the people who do this don’t bother to come to the pool until we’ll after it opens, so people who are there on time end up screwed over for a chair, and that is patently unfair. Who TF do these people think they are? You want to have your own lounge chair by a pool, that no one else can use all day? Then set one down by the kiddie pool in your backyard.
Load More Replies...I think all the people worried about the toilet are the same people who do this with their towels. It's a huge problem here in Germany
There was an exchange between pilots and ATC a while ago that went viral. BA flight complaining that they had been queueing for ages and a Lufthansa was allowed in before them. German pilot came back with 'But we had our towel on the runway since early morning!'. Who says Germans don't have a sense of humour!
Load More Replies...I see people do this all the time so I have moved towels when I noticed no one has actually used it in the last 30 minutes. I had someone come 3 hours later and say, "I had this spot" and I told them I had been at the pool all day and paid for a hotel with a pool so I could really care less if they reserved it hours before. It is rude and I just don't care if that upsets people. Good for the hotel staff.
I was recently at a beach resort and they had multiple signs saying that the poolside chairs could not be reserved, and staff would remove belongings left for more than 30 minutes. That seems reasonable to me. The 10am policy in the story still doesn't stop people from trying to reserve chairs they are not using throughout the day. The resort where I was staying did have cabanas you could pay to reserve and you could pay them to set you up with lounges and umbrellas on the beach, too.
Load More Replies...My hubby and I LOVE Caribbean resort vacations. We always treat the staff well. We tip for services always. And guess what, every single morning when we are headed to the breakfast table one of the staff runs up to us and tell us is that they’ve already saved our favorite cabana for us for the day. This happens on every one of our vacations. You just have to treat people right.
So many people don’t realize this, and go by the old “squeaky wheel gets oiled” philosophy of dealing with service staff. You guys are spot on with the “you can catch more flies with honey than you can with vinegar” philosophy. The nicer you are—-you don’t have to be a pushover, since it is possible to be stern without resorting to being abusive—-the more willing people are to go the extra mile for you. You are obviously reaping the benefits of that, while the assholes are only given the staff’s minimum effort.
Load More Replies...I can speak as a recreational professional who deals with this behavior. 1) Most of us observe to start. On our deck we give an hour for people to come back. This allows time for coffee, restroom, etc. 2) we mark them. If items don’t move then we move them. 3) usually items left behind are not truly personal. It’s always a pair of flip flops split between chairs, one of our life jackets, a random magazine or book. Not someone’s actual personal items. Essentially stuff we all know they will survive without if stolen/removed. Guests who do this are belligerent but I’ve had people leave property. Actual hotel property for 6 hours and come back expecting to still have their chair. Meanwhile guests actually staying and using the facility can’t find anything. They both complain. We have lots of signage, put it on their room keys, and have it in resort info.
I work at a resort pool so I can actually speak to this from the hotel side and I am part of a recreational professional group. We all face this problem. Yes this is a real issue. I have had guests leave for the parks for 6 hours using only our towels to mark their chairs. Come back and threaten guests or us who are in those chairs. What is ridiculous about this behavior is people who are actually gone will do the same thing. How do we tell if you’re actually there or not. A lot of us have a policy of observing the objects. Here we wait at least an hour before removing items. We take a photo of personal belongings and if they haven’t moved in over an hour then it’s removed. There’s also a difference in the items used to reserve chairs vs items of people actually there. Usually If they aren’t there they’ll do things like use our life jackets, towels, and one personal item. Like split a pair of flip flops between two chairs. Long story short, we can tell.
Yes. They should do this. Major pet peeve when travelling is people saving seats at stupid o'clock in the morning. For those complaining about being in the bathroom...this is before 10am. If the policy is made firm, more than likely you'll have another seat to choose from when you come back...or have only one person go to the washroom at a time. STOP HOGGING ALL THE SEATS
Back in the '80's when I started to go abroad with friends, we often found loungers with towels on early in the morning. Me and my buds (as you do) getting back to the hotel in the early hours found towels on the loungers already. 10 minutes later the swimming pool became the washing machine for many towels. We found out it was a bunch of German families placing the towels on the loungers before retiring to bed. It was for sh*ts and giggles back then, but since then it has become a thing for most Europeans to do when on holiday.....
I stayed at a hotel in Myrtle Beach that does this. It's a really nice hotel with indoor and outdoor pools as well as hot tubs and a lazy river. The entitled try this c**p there and the hotel managers and staff snatch their c**p up and put it in lost and found. I've seen some awesome arguments jump off over it. But in all fairness there are signs posted everywhere around the pools and such that tell them in plain simple to read English that they can't save pool lounges before noon. After 12 if they save one they have 30 minutes to come back to their spot or risk having their stuff snatched up anyway. I personally don't think that saving a lounge should even be permitted in the first place. If you aren't going to be around using the facilities on offer you shouldn't hinder someone else from freely using them. Seems like common sense to me but the ones saving those lounges for themselves to use later in the day undoubtedly see things much different.
If you are back to the seat in less than 30 minutes rhen it is most likely that you are in the pool or getting something from the bar - so actively using the chair. So at least at the hotel you are using they dont permit saving at all.

So, I work at an indoor theme park, and we have a birthday party room that you have to make reservations for. With this in mind, we do not allow guests to have birthday parties in the dining room. There are three reasons for this: 1) it's not fair to the guests who paid for the party room to see someone do the same thing for free in the dining room. 2) birthday parties are usually a minimum of 5-6, and so that clogs the dining room/takes tables away from guests who actually want to just eat and relax and not have a bunch of kids running around with cake and toys. 3) no outside food or drinks in the building, unless it's in the party room. Guests in the dining room aren't getting cake, are not allowed to bring in cake, so it's not fair to the guests in the dining room. We get a lot of guests who try to have bd parties in the dining room and we, the kitchen staff, have to tell them to either make a reservation in the party room, or to move over to our hotel lobby dining area.
That makes sense for kids birthday parties, but what about adults who dont want cake or the extras but maybe have a larger group of friends and are only ordering what is on the menu? Should they really need to pay extra for the same service just because one of them is a year older?

Most of them don't just go to breakfast and come back though. A lot of them put their towels on lounges and go off for most of the day, and then come back several hours later. Some get up early, run down and "reserve" some lounges, and then go back to bed until late morning/early afternoon. It's ridiculous and I'm always happy to see places free the lounges up.
Load More Replies...Nice! I mean, it could fly at the Family Choice Motel & Grille, but at anything Holiday Inn or better it's tacky and unfair to other guests. If I ever get the opportunity, I'll choose to stay there.
The resorts that I stay at monitor this. If items are left on the sunbeds for more than an hour, they are removed.
I think the bigger issue here is the same as my husband and I went through, there are not enough chairs for the amount of people staying there. Stayed at a very expensive hotel with a spa, pool and hot tub. Could not get near a chair to sit, could not get near the hot tub, would have waited our turn if there were a place to sit. A lot of money spent not being able to use the facilities we paid for.
We had a rule at our neighborhood pool that you could not save a lounge for a child because they would take up 3/4 of the available seats and only sit down for the 30 seconds it took their mom to wipe sunscreen on them.
I have heard of hotels doing this before. They don't just take the stuff. They usually have an employee like the towel boy write down the time they see someone put their stuff out and time it. Usually if they are not back within a reasonable time-frame like 15-30 mins they take the stuff up. It only takes that long to use bathroom, grab a drink, grab something to eat from hotel restaurant. Living on the coast of Florida I see people doing that at the beach. They will get there 6/7 in morning. Find the perfect spot, put their stuff down and leave. Not returning until 10/11 or later.
The funny comments are like what if I had to run to the restroom or it's because of the ones who come down at four no read the article people putting stuff out at four am five am and you can not reserve seating before 10am seriously
If you're having an early swim and need to step away for a moment, why not just inform the attendant that you'll be back in five mins? If you need a drink, why not call the concierge and request a member of the wait staff to take your order? Really, it's not that difficult.
GOOD!! This obnoxious behaviour needs to stop. There are usually plenty of beds for everybody - if nobody reserves them
I don't do mega all inclusive resorts. People spend a lot for all the amenities of a mall back home. Including the mega number if guests who always seem to get to the free meals first. Why go anywhere if it's going to be the same as home, same people, same mess. Vacation to me is to be far from the madding crowd. But that's just me🤟😎👍
When on holiday in the Caribbean in 2020, I was up during the night because of jetlag and sat on the balcony. At around 3:30 to 4am every now and then a guest would appear and claiming chairs by the beach and pool by dropping their belongings on them. It just amused me people would do that on their holiday, like set an alarm just for that.
Personally I have stayed at smaller resorts in Caribbean and beach staff know who you are many guests going jogging or swin in Ocean when sun coming up even walk beach it depends where you stay I guess
I personally will never understand the appeal of a holiday like this. Lying around for hours in a hotel you don't leave for a week with who knows how many other people around... It all seems so boring to me. But hey, if that's what people find relaxing then good for them. I'd prefer to get out and see the sights and culture though.
I'm confused, where is someone supposed to put their towel as they swim.
They are talking about those who "save" a spot/chair and then leave to come back later - often hours later. You can have your towel there while you are in the pool though.
Load More Replies..."Five Star Hotel's staff enforces hotel rules." This isn't the content I want to see here.
I'm guessing the pool is not open before 10am and people will leave items the night before? Or the guests are able to access the pool and then go off for breakfast or brunch , or something and then plan on coming back later?
None of the pictures show anyone in the pool so it's definitely either not open before 10 or opens before breakfast and then closes and reopens at 10. And for the people being all oh what if they're in the pool, if there were people in the pool I'm pretty sure they would notice the staff going around collecting the stuff and say oh hey, that's mine. I mean they're hardly in stealth mode here.
Load More Replies...There are generally enough to circle the pool without being right up against each other and packing people into them like sardines
Load More Replies...There are 5 panels that have the message of 6 am that the stuff is collected and the sign reads no saving beds before 10 am, so it it possible to 'save' a bed after 10 am (with a noted time if not occupied in a matter of moments hopefully?) So after 10 am I'd say there is NO TAKING of property, or they'd lose the 5 star status. Common sense folks. So my question would be if this story orginally had no clear facts and 5 panels that cleared up 6 am clearing of the towels and not 'at will' while people are enjoying the pool or getting needs met. (restroom stops or water to stay hydrated).
No, the Tik Tok person says no reserving sunbeds before 10am. I went to the hotel's website to see what happens after 10am. Apparently you can't reserve them at any time: "The reservation of sunbeds by the pool is not allowed by the action of leaving towels or personal objects on them. The hotel staff will remove both towels and belongings."
