People Give Some Interesting Advice To Mom Wondering How To Get Dog To Stop Growling When Her Toddler Hits Him
Common sense seems to be an increasingly rare commodity. You’d think that someone in the responsible position of both parent to a toddler and owner of a dog might possess enough know-how to make basic judgments on how to handle them, wouldn’t you? Luckily, the internet was there to save the day and give this person the basic advice that they so badly needed. (Facebook cover image: shutterstock / 249 Anurak)

Dogs are wonderful creatures. Enthusiastic, loyal and full of unconditional love, they truly are man’s best friend. This Quora user’s pup has to put up with being repeatedly punched by a pesky toddler, and instead of retaliating like many would, gives a warning growl to show its displeasure.
Now, most people would be thankful for the patience of such a gesture, and kindly teach the bite-sized bully how to respect animals. However, this person couldn’t quite seem to grasp this basic concept and had to be set straight by Australian dog owner Marnie Bell, who stepped in with a characteristically straightforward Aussie response.
Marnie, a former foster carer for a dog rescue group, knows a thing or two about canine behavior. If you are about to introduce a new human into a doggy-dominated family, there are certain things you can do to make it a happy event for people and pups alike. “You can bring some of the baby’s clothes home from the hospital before you bring the baby home, so the dog has a chance to get used to the new family member’s scent,” she suggested to Bored Panda. “Make sure you don’t suddenly change the dogs routine after the baby comes home. Any changes to routine should (ideally) happen slowly in the months leading up to the birth, so the dog doesn’t associate the sudden upheaval in its life with the baby.”
“Also, remember to pay attention to your fur child after your human child comes home. They don’t understand why they’re no longer the center of your world. Be sure to enforce strict boundaries with both pet & child, and enforce them consistently and lovingly. Teach your child to respect your pet and your pet will respect your child.” Simple common sense really!
Here’s what other people had to say about the slightly bizarre question
You obviously need to put the child down. Its a vicious person who will eventually bite someone. Do the right thing. Put them to sleep
Teach the child quickly. If he feels it is acceptable to torment dogs like this he will not get much older without being bitten by some other dog with serious consequences for the owner and possibly fatal consequences for the animal. What kind of parent wants to know how to allow their child to safely abuse animals??
I know! It’s just stupid that the parent would blame the dog for getting mildly angry that the child was causing him harm. If anything, that is a well-behaved dog to not do anything more than growl.

Here's how to stop the behavior: 1) get a newspaper (ya know those things that used to tell us about the goings on in the world before the internet 2) roll it as tight as you can so it's a fairly solid stick like thing 3) swat the nose of your child EVERY TIME they punch your dog 4) go hug your dog and tell it what a good pup it is for not biting your crappy violent child 5) repeat as many times as necessary or until you get rid of the child for being a vicious little shite

What a spoilt child. Unfortunately this is very common today. People don't seem to realize that dogs are alive and have feelings. I hope that the mother can learn from her stupidity, or that the dog can find a better home for to live in. :(
as much as I dislike kids, we're talking about a toddler. He's too young to understand why he is in the wrong. The problem here is the mother...

This woman should never have been allowed to get a dog (or any pet) and to breed. Take both the dog and kid from her, she is too stupid to take care of any of them properly.
Well... second thought: sorry for loling, it's not the childs fault so well.. it sucks for both, the kid and the beaten pet :(
Load More Replies...Lousy parenting. Teach that brat that hitting the dog or anyone is unacceptable & dole out some punishment. You are teaching him it is okay to be a bully. You owe that dog an apology & a decent home environment where all living things are respected. Either correct your child's behavior or find the dog a home where he will be loved & respected. SMH
This reminds me of the time a little cousin of mine suffocated her dog with a pillow and her parents didn't say a thing to her. I don't understand how parents can just brush off their children mistreating a living being (and your own pet on top of it) :/
The toddler should have been taught by now not to punch anything...let alone any living thing. My sons 9 months old (&since hes so little we watch him very closely) but knows not to grab at our cat when he "pets nice" the fact the dog growls as a warning and not bites shows great restraint and patience on its part.
There are people who just delight in downvoting. They probably contribute as much to society as they do on BP.
Load More Replies...The first thing we taught our puppy and our baby was "gentle". We got the puppy when pregnant with said baby and grew them up together. Kids never touched the dogs wrong and the dogs never ate my kids. 4 kids and 3 Great Danes all under 5 years old. And they all got along.
My daughter ADORES dogs, she was constantly trying to pet them while out at the park or on walks. We taught her at a VERY young age (1 I think) that she needs to respect the dogs space and ASK the dogs' person before approaching it. You never know how an animal will react, and not all dogs are good with kids. There has been a few times where the person has said not to touch the dog. And almost everytime they thank her for asking! We had a dog & he was amazing with the kids (probably why she loves dogs so much), not not all dogs have been around children & they aren't used to the way children move/act. An animal is part of the family, he/she should be treated they same way you would treat any one else in the family. Rant over!
Good rant! I have one dog that loves children and another that is a bit wary - she is just a bit skittish. I'm always chuffed to bits when a little child asks if they can pet my dogs (or if a parent does on their behalf) and I will explain to them which one is happy to be stroked and which one will back away. It's a good opportunity for them to see how some dogs can be nervous and best left and some dogs that are really happy to be petted and made a fuss of.

I used to be a vet's assistant and I saw SO MANY animals that had injuries because some kid thought it was funny to abuse them and the parents let them do it. I had to quit that job because it depressed me.
Quick answer- punch your child in the head and then punch yourself in the head, and then give the poor dog to someone that will love it and treat it with the respect it deserves. STUPID QUESTION, STUPID COW, STUPID IS AS STUPID DOES.
If someone punched my dogs they would growl too, but I would rip your tits off. That child needs discipline or they need to give up the dog to a better family who understands respect for animals.
Really? So this woman is gonna let the child keep punching the dog and the poor doggo will be forced to just take it? One day he´s gonna bite your child dear mom, so please teach your kid respect animals.
Dear mom. Obviously, find the dog a new home with someone intelligent and let the kid hit *you*. The dog will stop growling.

Yo guys. Stop saying stuff like "get rid of your child" ect. It's a toddler. If anyone needs to be put down, it the parent who's useless at raising kids and keeping pets.
Get rid of the child. He'll be raised better in a different home. Get rid of the dog, too; you don't deserve him.

Load More Replies...When I'm older, I'm going to teach my children to respect animals because they share the same Earth we live on. It's disgusting when bad parents and owners allow their children to punch, pull, and drag animals! It's even more disgusting when they punish the animal for sticking up for themselves. If you search up on YouTube you'll find videos called "Animals Attack Babies" then clips of children annoying animals will show up. The stupid parents laugh because they think their kid abusing an animal is amusing. Then when the animal sticks up for themselves by hissing, growling, jumping away, or shoving back the child the owners are suddenly infuriated!
Imagine the rolls were reversed. My dog bites my toddler and my toddler cries. How do I teach my toddler not to cry when the dog bites him? Sounds pretty straightforward right? Teach the dog not to bite the toddler, not the other way around. Problem solved. You're welcome.
Some people are too stupid to have a dog, and shouldn’t breed, either.
Is this woman mentally challenged? Glad to see that everyone is standing up to be counted. She will be the first person to have the dog killed if it bites her kid. She is an IDIOT.
you should be thankful for the warning and the patience your dog shows.
I wish this woman was in my state, which I'm sure she's not as she would have been fined and possibly jailed for child neglect and animal cruelty. Damn, damn, damn!
Sadly, there are a lot of trolls on Quora. This may well be one of them. But it is possible that it's genuine, this level of stupid does exist.
Very much so. This woman will be at her child's school. First for, "How DARE you discipline my child!" And second, "How dare you fail my child!" in the same year.

Since she isn't understanding doggie language. & for the love of everything grand -> warn everyone that you have your toddler around, about being an animal abuser. So your neighbors & family can protect their pets. After your toddler runs across a dog that doesn't just Growl but Bites your toddler You might get what you Should have Taught Your child!! Hopefully the kid won't be to damaged or killed by the next animal he abuses. (Everytime your toddler hits the dog, have a bigger love one punch you in the face. Then tell us What You should do to handle being hit! Duh)
I read few questions that people post on Quora... I think that majority of those people are intellectually challenged.
If the mom think this is an acceptable behavior then I pity the future teacher and classmates of this kid.
Ooooh Lawd! I hope they use condoms (and everything else) because the next question they will be asking is "how do I get my toddler to stop beating on my newborn?"
I know how to help this woman... INVEST IN CHILD MANAGEMENT SKILLS!!!
Punch that little s**t and see how he likes it, then sit him down and explain that dogs don't like it either.
This is no way to treat a dog! That child needs to be taught that it is wrong to purposefully hurt any other living creature! That dog is growling but soon it will bite! That is not what you should be teaching your child! Tell that child no for a change... please
Like any self respecting cat would tolerate it either!
Load More Replies...Dog, don't growl, just eat the toddler, and if the mom complains, eat her too!
Verbal scolding? Hell no, smack that kid! You're raising an a*****e; nip it in the bud!
The mother is entirely at fault here. Even a child as young as a toddler can be taught to treat an animal gently, by words and example. The fact that this idiot woman has asked for advice on how to stop the dog growling when the child punches it, is proof that some people should have to pass a test before they become parents. If the only thing the dog does is give a warning growl, it obviously has better manners than this lame excuse for a 'mother'. Grow up, you stupid woman!
Grow up and be a real parent and tell the little brat to quit hitting the dog.
If you can not train it to be behave, get rid of it, there are plenty of people willing to adopt. Sometimes if you can't solve a problem, get rid of it completely. I am there are people who want your toddler very much. Or... let your kid annoy the dog and wait for him to lose a finger, that will teach him
I can't believe this question was asked seriously. What kind of moron thinks the dog is the problem in that situation? And that dog has some major restraint. One of my dogs bit me when I kept moving his food bowl while he was eating. I learned after that one bite that I shouldn't do it again. If the parent/s are too incompetent to teach their kid it's wrong to keep punching their dog, I would not begrudge him for teaching the kid the same way my dog taught me.
I am not a dog person at all. but the kid needs to be taught respect for animals. they feel pain the same as people do. as far as buying a cat... first of all you adopt you don't shop.. second a cat does not deserve to be punched any more than the dog does and third... the little snot could kill a cat.
Just teach your kid not to hurt the dog and if not your child will get bit
my neighbour's dog was put down because it bit a toddler that was repeatedly hitting the poor thing with a stick. It wasn't even a serious bite. Forget controlling your dog, control your fricking kid and teach him to be kind to animals
Some kids are rotten right the way through from birth, if the kid was an animal YOU would take it and have it put down, now is the time to teach YOUR kid how to treat animals with respect and if it can't learn get rid of the kid as it will remain rotten and evil for the rest of it's life, the best bet is to drown your kid in a bucket of water now along with yourself to save the bother.
The child needs to be taught. When the child approaches the dog, the mom needs to BE THERE -- set down the phone or whatever she's doing, and go over there and referee. Warn him that if he hits the dog, he goes in the playpen. If the kid hits the dog, put the kid in a playpen with no toys or blanket and let him scream and cry. Tell him repeatedly: "You hit [dog's name] and that is why you're in this pen." PROTECT THE DOG FROM THE KID, or the dog will do what many animals do when threatened: attack.
How about teach your damn kid how to behave around animals and how to treat them correctly and humanely? What kind of a lazy a*s parent is this? Way to teach a kid to be a psychopath! Watch her dog maul the kid who will deserve it, and then cry for sympathy afterward claiming the dog "just turned on them!" I feel sorry for the dog!
You know what happens to kids who abuse animals...they turn into mongrel adults, probably a woman basher or even a serial killer! I wonder if this kid is a bully at school...🤔 I feel sorry for the poor dog...😢
lol I love how everyone is like "this idiot shouldn't have a dog" now although I agree with these statements, I also agree with this idiot shouldn't have had a kid!
She should not have a dog or kids apparently she doesn't know much about either.
Take the animal to a shelter so that it can be adopted by a family with brains, clearly, you don't have any.
Kids should be taught not to taunt dogs of their own nor to approach another person's dog without permission. A parent saying that "oh my child just wants to pet your dog" might get your child bit by their own fault. And no, it won't change because the parent has a fit about what happened. A dog can be friendly with some people and not so friendly with others. I remember one time I asked someone if I could approach their dog and the owner said yes stating that the dog was friendly. But something set the dog off with me for some reason so I backed off, tried again and the dog still growled. Owner said it was unusual since it seemed so friendly. I said its okay, backed off a little distance, and let them go on their way before continuing. I also tend to stop and step aside when I see somebody approaching with a dog (big one especially) in case that dog decides to react in some manner that the owner can't control it (whether in a friendly way or a protective way).
Since the child and the parent have zero idea how to provide a good and loving home the parent should find a good loving home for the dog. But, she may not be able to identify one so perhaps giving dog to a rescue (no kill, of course) for them to find home.
Then do the same for the kid, since she doesn't know how to raise that, either! Better she does it now, at 2, when someone can take the child and teach it, rather than have the revolving juvenile hall door start revolving at about 6, until at 12 she signs the kid over to foster care 'because I can't control him', and he's pretty well ruined for life. And unfortunately, that's not snark.

But my son would harass the dog when she was eating...even though we told him to leave her alone. When he was three..he pushed it too far and grabbed her tail yanking it. The dog wheeled around and bit him in the face, right around his nose, just as she would have with done with a puppy. He got the message after that and left her alone when she ate. He still has a scar that reminds him to respect dogs.
The dog should be immediately removed from that home. Also, someone commented that she should buy a cat. Very inappropriate. First of all, we don't BUY pets, we take into our care. They become part of our family. Secondly, wth does "buy a cat" mean? That the cat would have attacked as opposed to the dog being patient? That cats are mean and devil-like creatures that would harm for no reason? Cats can be loving and compassionate too!
Just to clarify - I hope you mean the dog should be removed for the dog's safety? That house should not be allowed to take care of any pet, be it dog, cat or any other. That woman is an abusive person.

She needs to teach this F*****G CHILD to not hit the poor dog. Like why?
Am I alone in thinking quite a few of these posts seem contrived? Would the word 'punch' be used, in place of hit, when the mom described it? Seems like Bored Panda reports a lot on anonymous texts and social media posts that can't be proven or disproved. But they seem fake a lot. To get attention, to get likes.
Years ago, we had a neighbor child who kept hitting our (tied out in our own yard) dog with sticks. We warned him several times to leave the dog alone. One day, we heard him screaming. We went out, and the boy was running home. Our son told us what happened. We went to talk to his mom, and she was on the phone calling the police on us for "letting" our dog bite her son, and telling them that our dog didn't have shots (???). The child had a few small scratch marks on him, and he conveniently forgot to tell his mom that he had provoked the dog. Why was her 4 year old across the street at our house unattended, while she had no idea where he was? She let him roam the neighborhood. I shudder to think how that kid turned out.
Kids learn from what they saw. I guess you really should teach and show you kids of how to be gentle and care with your pets. I'm not trying to tell you that you raise your kids wrongly, but you can show your kids of what is right and what is wrong to do. Maybe your kids didn't learn fron you, but who knows maybe other people around them sometimes show them like that. And that what exactly what you really need to avoid.
A friend of mine had another friend who was doing the "i'd never spank my child' routine. Child was2, and pulled my friend's cat out from under the bed by his tail. Cat bit him--well, mouthed him, as he'd lost his teeth long ago. Friend grabbed his arm, took his hand off the cat's tail and swatted him on the butt. When her buddy protested, the response was, "He'll never do it again." And he didn't. (The cat lived to the ripe old age of 24, unmolested.)
I’ve a neighbor who’s 4 year old girl has since she started walking bites and hits animals and humans. I tried to explain to her mother that she shouldn’t allow this comportement as the kid get older things will become harder to control her. The mother replied that her daughter was to young to understand what is right or wrong! Now this little devil bites and hits her 8 year old bother, her 16 year old sister and the mother. Unfortunately the mother has a also two month old baby who has the pleasure of getting hit and bitten ! Letting little monsters get their way without any proper education creates future bullies and unadapted citizens who will become physcopathes! This way of raising kids is an open door to a social disaster ! May God preserve us from them!
Call Child Protective Services before the baby dies!!!!!

The issue of the child hitting the dog, has stayed in my thoughts, it truly bothers me, is it possible that the child is allowed to watch t.v. with no supervision, there is more and more violent programs at any time of day, some parents put the child in front of the t.v. when they are busy, it scares me to no end, with many children at a babysitters who knows what they watch on the t.v. !!!
The mom should reach out to a dog rescue. Give the dog a better life. She doesn’t understand what parenting entails, let alone having a dog to care for.
This mother sounds like a real moron that she doesn't understand it's not okay for her kid to keep punching the dog, and that she should be told how to stop the dog from growling about it. People like that don't deserve to have pets. If allowed to continue this behavior could be considered as cruelty to animals. I won't advocate that she be put down, but the dog does NOT deserve to be punched by the kid. How was SHE brought up that she doesn't get that? MAN!
It's really hard toput down humans. Letting your toddlerabuset a dog usually doesn't cut it.

I feel so bad doing this to my Lucy but I'd also feel bad if she nipped my granddaughter because we weren't taking any action. As my granddaughter is only young we just reinforce that she's not to hit Lucy as my house is Lucy's home.
Some people are too clueless/ stupid to own a dog or be a parent. I feel sorry for both the dog and the kid.
Do not ask: "How do I get the dog to stop growling?", rather consider teaching the child respect for animals and other people, by teaching the kid the consequences of their actions. If you hurt an animal or another human, so too will you get hurt. The dog growls because the kid hitting it is an act of aggression, it is merely warning the Child. Bend the tree while it is young to prevent problems later in life. Respect, consideration, consequences and responsibility are all things that should be taught.
Animal protection should be called on this asshat. If you're too stupid & irresponsible to know that a dog should never be subjected to punching from anyone ever, then the animal should be removed from the home.
I don’t understand when parents don’t teach kids— dog safty. NEVER EVER punch a dog! Don’t bug em when their eating, no pulling their tail, nor their ears! Ok!?

I'm not offended but I am confused. I don't understand why you are using dyslexia either as an insult (yet offering the 'no offence' defence' clause) or suggesting it was a possible reason or cause for this person's attitude. It isn't. When has it ever been suggested that there was a link between dyslexia and animal abuse? On a different note I do find it rather amusing that you then went on to misspell dyslexia.

People who abuse animals are called "sociopaths". Point of clarification. Its worse than being a bully...

GET A CAT??? NO!!! The cat is going to get the same HORRIBLE treatment that this rotten kid gives the dog!! DISCIPLINE YOUR BRAT KID!!! TAKE SOME COURSES IN REPSONSIBILITY AND HOW TO BE A REAL PARENT. MAAYBE Child Protective Services AND the local Humane Society should come over and take away the DOG AND the KID.
Thabk god someone elde noticed that advice. Wtf suggest getting a cat to these people?! I hope they never do as well as I hope this dog will be rescued from this family
Load More Replies...My 3 year old has grown up with an old grumpy dog and one old grumpy cat and one young cat that loves him. He has been taught from birth to be gentle and loving to animals. When we walk to our local supermarket all the local cats come out to say hello to him, as they all know and love him. Seriously it's a half mile walk and he'll stroke 4 cats on the way. Wish they loved me like that.
Aww :) I wish dogs did that to me... (I'm a dog person)
Load More Replies...Go punch yourself woman, maybe it will knock some sense into your empty head. Sheesh, how stupid, ignorant and unempathic can people be? :/

Very true. John Wayne Gacy's neighborhood had no outdoor pets in it.

Find a loving home for the doggy and replace it with a bear or alligator. Problem solved,ma’am...you can thank me later 😊

Now when she comes to visit we put her bed in our bedroom with her toys and the tv on (incase she's lonely) until my granddaughter leaves.
Ok!?

Yeah... these questions appear all the time on Quora. They're put on there by people who want attention and/or to p**s people off.
This is why I think pet parents are unstable psychopaths.... everyone is calling this 2 year old an a*****e, jerk, send him back. He's 2 and clearly he does not have a decent parent. If this is his mother....obviously he wasn't taught basic human skills... give the Human child a break. It's obviously the adults fault
