People Give Some Interesting Advice To Mom Wondering How To Get Dog To Stop Growling When Her Toddler Hits Him
Common sense seems to be an increasingly rare commodity. You’d think that someone in the responsible position of both parent to a toddler and owner of a dog might possess enough know-how to make basic judgments on how to handle them, wouldn’t you? Luckily, the internet was there to save the day and give this person the basic advice that they so badly needed. (Facebook cover image: shutterstock / 249 Anurak)

Dogs are wonderful creatures. Enthusiastic, loyal and full of unconditional love, they truly are man’s best friend. This Quora user’s pup has to put up with being repeatedly punched by a pesky toddler, and instead of retaliating like many would, gives a warning growl to show its displeasure.
Now, most people would be thankful for the patience of such a gesture, and kindly teach the bite-sized bully how to respect animals. However, this person couldn’t quite seem to grasp this basic concept and had to be set straight by Australian dog owner Marnie Bell, who stepped in with a characteristically straightforward Aussie response.
Marnie, a former foster carer for a dog rescue group, knows a thing or two about canine behavior. If you are about to introduce a new human into a doggy-dominated family, there are certain things you can do to make it a happy event for people and pups alike. “You can bring some of the baby’s clothes home from the hospital before you bring the baby home, so the dog has a chance to get used to the new family member’s scent,” she suggested to Bored Panda. “Make sure you don’t suddenly change the dogs routine after the baby comes home. Any changes to routine should (ideally) happen slowly in the months leading up to the birth, so the dog doesn’t associate the sudden upheaval in its life with the baby.”
“Also, remember to pay attention to your fur child after your human child comes home. They don’t understand why they’re no longer the center of your world. Be sure to enforce strict boundaries with both pet & child, and enforce them consistently and lovingly. Teach your child to respect your pet and your pet will respect your child.” Simple common sense really!
You obviously need to put the child down. Its a vicious person who will eventually bite someone. Do the right thing. Put them to sleep
HAHAHA lol
lol
God, can I retroactively abort my ex neighbors? I always suspected their brat injured the poor kitty who came limping into my yard. (He's sleeping on my pillow.)
Glad kitty ended up in a loving home.
Teach the child not to whinge and bawl when the poor dog eventually cant take it anymore and snaps.
That kid's learning that Mommy will blame whoever HE punches for him punching. Think of the scary teenage years to come.
yaaaaaas!!!!!
Start by educating the parents, but some are too stupid to learn or change their nasty habits. Unfortunately some humans should not be allowed to procréât or own animals of any kind.
Oof harsh. It’s a small child who doesn’t know any better, it’s the parent’s fault for not teaching the child to be kind, gentle and respectful.
Charlene is right. Put the mom down.
Ridiculous questions warrant ridiculous answers!
Teach the child quickly. If he feels it is acceptable to torment dogs like this he will not get much older without being bitten by some other dog with serious consequences for the owner and possibly fatal consequences for the animal. What kind of parent wants to know how to allow their child to safely abuse animals??
I know! It’s just stupid that the parent would blame the dog for getting mildly angry that the child was causing him harm. If anything, that is a well-behaved dog to not do anything more than growl.
At this point, I refuse to believe bad doggos exist
Not sure why you're getting down-voted, you're right
Later the kid might learn to abuse the parents. Because, apparently, everything is allowed to their angel.
Okay, John, well, if I hit you and you protested it verbally, nobody would say you were being a jerk for being angry at me for causing you harm.
Being kind to animals is super important, but this sort of behaviour can obviously transfer into people as well. The kid learns it's fine to punch others, they're going to be a bully. To both animals and people. We don't need any more bullies in the world.
Not to mention that harming animals is the first step into the wide world of serial rape / murder. Put the kid down now before he gains a victim list.
I agree! It is not acceptable behaviour on behalf of the child's and mainly the parents part.

To be fair diane, that dog was being a dick.
Kids education nowadays... "My son is perfect, and by any means he´s wrong. The dog is the problem..." You shouldn´t be parentings kids. Or dogs.
I agree however, my question is why do the kids hit, where do they learn this, the parents hitting each other, or they hit the child ???
Watching my own sons when they were little, it wasn't that they learned to hit the dog or cat. It was excitement - cause that is how they play with their toys, too. So the dog or cat is a toy to them. I sat them down on the couch with kitty - no dogs at that time - and we had a "how to gently pet the kitty" lesson. And then if the cat bit - what did you do to the cat? Maybe you shouldn't do that.
I've had friends who are ultra placid, very zen, don't raise voices let alone a hand to a child. Can you imagine their amazement when their toddler started hitting things. Nature v Nurture. Just shows that those traits are part of being an animal, nurture teaches them not to hit like THAT parent needs to train a child to be kind to animals.
My question, when the child is older, will the hitting become violent, animal abuse ?
kids do various things to see how we would react and to express excitement. it is our job to teach them not to do some of those things.
Most humans are just disgusting and naturally bullies. If you are a decent person however, you'd certainly make sure that your children know which behaviour is acceptable and which would never be tolerated, without resorting to hitting. Anything harsher or softer than this is just unacceptable, as your comment and this post show us. Hitting a child hard and on regular basis is not right, but treating him/her like a monarch is even more harmful, if you ask me. I got a few light slaps on the butt when I was little and screwed it real hard but I'm ok, right? In fact, I can safely say my relationship with my parents is noticeably above-average compared to the one of most of my teenage peers. My parents just knew what they were doing because they were never in short of common sense. I raised my dog modelling these disciplining techniques, adapting them when needed to be dog-appropriate. He's still a happy, attached pooch. The only difference: I can always rely on him to follow my commands.
It's not learned the kids two!! They don't know how to express excitement. It's normal two year old actions. What is not normal is that th mom dosnt correct this
