5 Teachers Who Now Probably Regret Bullying Their Students

I once had a teacher that was probably too old to be working with children anymore. She taught 4th grade, and my mother actually had her in 4th and 5th. She was so verbally abusive it was traumatizing. I went into depression and quit eating. I lost so much weight and one day she walked over to me and pulled my shirt against me and commented on how much weight I was losing and that I looked so much better. Old bitch. I was also sick one day and she wouldn't let me call my mom. I had my head on my desk crying when low and behold my mother walks in. She had that mother intuition thing going on and just felt the need to see me. My mom grabbed me, marched up to the teacher and said "Don't you see that she's sick? Why didn't you call me?" I never loved my mom more. She ripped that teacher a new one!

In middle school, I literally peed my pants in class because a bitch ass teacher wouldn't let me go to the bathroom. She then made fun of me in front of the whole class, and told everyone what I did, even though I tried playing it off like spilled soda on the floor. The next day, my mom pitched such a fit with the school, I was never told "no" when I asked to go to the bathroom.

When I was in high school we had assigned seating and I was sat next to a girl who wore very strong perfume, which was triggering my asthma and making it hard for me to breathe. I asked the teacher after class whether I could move my seat because the scent was causing breathing problems, and the teacher lectured me for a solid five minutes on how I was being insensitive and not respecting her cultural right to wear perfume. (I'm sorry, what now??? I couldn't breathe!) Eventually I just switched with another kid and the teacher never noticed.

My nephew's professor read his disabilities accommodation list out loud to the class, and then made fun of the name of his disease. Can we say major HIPPA violation, anyone? I made sure he will never teach there again...

Its not as bad as these. But when I was younger I had quite a bad speech impediment. It took about seven years of speech therapy to clear it up. So naturally reading in front of the class was very embarrassing. Most teachers knew this and gave me a pass. Except one teacher who demanded I read all my anwsers to the class. I kept repeating "I don't know". He raised his voice and said "the answer on your sheet, what do you mean you dont know." I just kept repeating I dont know. It seemed like it went on forever. Until finally he realized and ended by saying "sorry I forgot you are the one who doesn't speak well."

School, a place of social and academic education, moral and ethical understanding and apparently, near death experiences and complete ignorance. I hope we find a way to address these issues in education. Protecting and empowering vulnerable students is a good start

In hindsight we used to get picked on for having anxiety/depression. 'Stop being so sensitive and do it'/'Man up' that kind of thing. 90's did suck for that.

We hear so much about how kids these days have lost their respect for authority and how teachers have no power anymore, (which is sometimes true) that we have become numb to the instances when teachers abuse their power over students. (which still happens.) People need to learn to stop leaning one way or the other due to politics and assess the current situation without preconceptions. Students have been bullied by teachers, and teachers have been bullied by students (and parents). It all happens, and it all exists. We should try to rely on generalizations less and actually think, that goes for both sides. I find the discussion often involves taking sides, team-teacher and team-student, when it should be about team-rights and team-human. At least that is my opinion. The way we are going about it is all wrong and causing trouble for everyone involved.

I have a connective tissue disorder which didn't affect me much as a kid but as I got older things like pe got harder and there were some things I couldn't do but I would still try and I knew my limits, a lot of teachers just thought I was just lazy, probably didn't help that I had weird proportions and naturally large body parts in some areas and my weight continued to fluctuate as I grew up because that's a thing.

Some teachers and Subs are ignorant, angry people who should not be allowed near students. Most teachers should be put on a pedestal and worshiped. The good ones far outnumber the bastards.

I have Asperger's and my parents always told me how lucky I am to go to such a great school. I guess I never appreciated that until reading this article, Jesus Christ, how can people like this be allowed near children?

When I was in yr 2 and yr 3 all my teachers used to tease me about how bad I am at maths. I always try but never remember anything. It was always so embarrassing and my teachers used to smirk at how slow I was. My grade we're all very very close and friendly so they all know how slow I was in maths. Every night I used to curl up in bed and cry because I felt useless. I didn't understand how I could be a straight A student but a D student in maths. It was truly heartbreaking. I was so glad at that time that my grade was in fact so close bc my older brother was always neglected and I was terrified. When I got to yr 6, my teacher was always so understanding and kind to me. She allowed me to be slow, as long as I got some of the work done, she was happy. I felt so much more cared for, and yes, my grade was still super close and friendly with each other. Also in yr 6, I was diagnosed with Dyscalculia which means that I cannot understand or remember my math lessons properly.

THEY SHOULD NEVER BE ALLOWED NEAR ANY CHILDREN EVER AGAIN! (but most of them are most likely tenured and CANNOT be fired! If this happens they just report to a room with ALL of the other AWFUL unfireable teachers and do nothing all day but STILL get paid!) Its true, look it up.

I WAS in the school the next morning. My son, who is autistic, was well known for having outbursts when people teased him or yelled at him. So one teacher gets pushed by him and she has him arrested..my son dragged off in cuffs. We found out from another teacher that shared an office with the "victim" that his teacher had flown off and started taunting and teasing my son when he refused to do his work..(His IEP clearly stated no teasing and asked teachers to call me and I would come to the school and deal with him.) I explained to his mental health therapist what happened and he demanded to be at the principal/parent/teacher conference. The teacher was demanding my son be expelled. His therapist had a copy of the IEP and started asking her questions. He said "You're a grown adult, he's still a child...and a learning disabled one at that. Why would you think that acting like you're 5 years old would end up being anything else but a disaster?" My son stayed, she resigned.

My daughter requires assistance due to physical disabilities. In the 2nd grade (she is now 19), the PT and SP decided it would be a good idea to make a picture schedule for her restroom routine. This grand idea was done by the PT, SP and both their assistants...my daughter's regular aide said 'hey, does the mom know you are doing this cause it seems like something she might not agree to' and was kicked out of the room. The 4 adults (two with Master's Degrees) proceeded to take photos of my child in the various steps of using the toilet. They then printed them and hung them on the wall in the TEACHER'S bathroom as this was the only bathroom in the school with the grab bars and room for a wheelchair. I found out a few days later but thankfully the aide moved the photos to a drawer so photos of my child with no pants on were not on display to the entire staff. And I actually had to fight to get these people removed from my daughter's IEP team after this event. Like full Due Process. Crazy

My 12 yr old daughter entered 7th grade with a bivalved cast on her arm since she had broken the elbow falling off her bike. A bivalved cast is one that can be removed for bathing. Since I am an RN, the doc agreed to this when applying the cast. Then it's wrapped with an Ace bandage. When said daughter came home that day, she had the cast & Ace in hand, not on her arm. I asked why. Apparently the PE teacher thought she was faking because she had never seen a cast like that & made her remove it despite my daughter telling her that her elbow as broken in 2 places. Needless to say, I re-wrapped her arm and was at the Principal's office the next morning. He defended the teacher and said I should have sent a doctor's note with her to school. I then informed him that I was an RN and anything I had to say or write was a legal document in FL and he damn well better pay attention to it. I also informed him that the epiphyseal plates were involved in her fractures.

Do these teachers not know what Insulin pumps and wheel chairs are? I mean these people are supposed to be teaching our children, you'd think they'd be smart enough to know better...

I got diagnosed with autism finally, after a few misdiagnosises, and got access to communities and professionals for people with my same/similar diagnosis. I'd heard of students being mistreated, but I dismissed it, how often could that actually happen! ...It made me sad, to see that it happens a lot. At least from what I have seen. I tried very hard to withhold any judgement and not make assumptions, tried to understand things were open to interpretation, which of course they are. These were people who I thought promised me hope, that someone would maybe understand or give me a teensy bit more patience, and I'm sure there are some very good teachers out there. But I personally haven't run into one. What I saw shook my faith in others... I protected other students, even the ones I didn't like, because I felt something was wrong. People swatted me down- I went to my parents, who didn't believe me at first- and then they finally did, tried to protest, and got swatted down.

I am a former Special Education teacher and for a time I subbed before taking my own classroom. I subbed in a middle school a lot and as a sub I was not allowed to let the kids leave to use the bathroom... even if I could visually see the bathroom from the room.. Why? because they had caught students having sex in the bathroom and the teachers were subs that had let them go. Was it the teacher's fault these kids had sex... nope but the school had to put out that rule... I felt awful denying bathroom to kids, the office got annoyed with me after awhile and allowed me to send kids to the bathroom because if I truly felt a student needed to go I would call the office for an escort. LOL Also for the record many states do not require substitute teachers to have any formal training before being put on the sub list so many sub have not been taught about these disabilities etc... Illinois actually requires subs to complete a certification course.

A teacher at my college harrassed one of my friends who needs a wheelchair, he also has narcolepsy. The minute she saw him that semester she started going on about how she tought "disabled kids were taking away spaces from kids that *really deserve them", she said disabled people were "lazy and mediocre". Most of the classroom remained unfazed. Only a couple more students and I told her that she was being not only absolutely wrong but that she was been abusive and meanspirited. We filed a complaint to the College dean, since is the Literature College of a very large University. She also spilled a lot of noise claiming she was best friends with the general Dean and that he had given her the consesion to open a private College certified by the State University, but that she just didn't care about it, amongst a bunch of nonsensical pathetic and mediocre blabber. She wasn't fired nor admonished. Some of us quit that class and took another. I have been abused by teachers bcs I'm autistic.

And they wonder why they have School Shooters.

To the one, who were desd for 5min - I hope that there was at least a talk with the teacher afterwards?! How can a teacher be so dumb that a child who ist 7 or 8 years old yells and isn‘t heard? I really don‘t get it

My epileptic son could feel a seizure coming and was in the play ground and got his big sister to help him to the office to get them to call me, they were stopped by the deputy principal who twisted my sons arms up behind his back and got an assistant teacher to grab my daughter by the shoulders and demanded they get lost and stay away from the office and were not going to call me as my son had already taken too much time off school. The children were hysterical are terrified, in the end my daughter was helped by someone to get to the office and call me. They denied the treatment even when the children had bruises. I called the police and the officer I spoke to was very understanding, but I was later told nothing would be done.

If a teacher ever, and I mean EVER touched my child, never mind ripping out an insulin pump, I wouldn't even bother with a lawsuit. That teacher will not walk, talk or see out of their eyes for months after I was finished.

I had a friend named Griffin who had a mental issue that made him blurt out stuff randomly and he couldn't control it. Well, one day we have a substitute and she was really mean, and kept on yelling at us. So Griffin started just saying random words like "Bird" in the middle of a quiz, so she told him to be quiet. He kept on saying stuff, and she kept on getting angrier when she stood up and yelled at him to go to the Principal's office. All the kids in my class started saying how he was special needs and stuff, when she said, I kid you not "Special needs or not he needs to shut up". We all just sat there while she took him to the Principal's office.

Did any of this fool lose their job over the stupidness, some could of went to jail for assault and attempted murder,

Please tell me some of these "teachers" were fired! And the two that ripped the pump out of the students should have been charged with assault. These kind of people DO NOT belong in a classroom.

My cousin had to go to the bathroom and the teacher refused. He ended up peeing his pants and she got fired.

yes, all of these stories are very upsetting, and it's good to be aware that stuff like this is happening, but please don't overlook the last part of the article! 504 plans are so helpful for those with any sort of disability - mental or physical. Anything from mild hearing loss, to anxiety or ADD, to diabetes, to physical handicaps, and everywhere in between! Even if you don't go to a public school, most private schools have an equivalent, or will work with a neighboring public school to get you the help you need! And there's also a similar plan for college students - just stop by the disability center at the college for information (every college has a disability center, it's required by law) Also - teachers and school staff should keep an eye out for students who may qualify for a 504 plan, but have not been officially diagnosed. Many parents may not notice that their child needs help academically, be in denial about a disability, or not be aware of the help they qualify for

I wasn't lucky at all with school, in middle school I was bullied by most of my classmates (just because I was smart, kind and fair) and I got depressed, nor my parents or any teachers tried to do something about it (and I was yelling in front of them what I was feeling like and passing through). Without any friends to talk to or any moral support at all (I got my first friend ever at 15) I started to try taking my own life. Fortunately, all the 3 times I've tried have failed. In the 5 years of superioro school a classmate of mine was a huge piece of shit, and I don't know why, she succeded to make friends with 10 teachers of 13 and (licking theyr butt, feet and I don't know what else) she manage to do whatever she wants and to convince them to hate me and my 3 friends. Teachers were lowering our grades on purpose and rising hers instead, even if she haven't studied at all. We also had a deaf guy in my class and 5 more students with autism, they where bullyed and mistreated by her.

Apalling so many teachers lack empathy and common decency towards their students.

As a kid y tongue was attached to back of my lower teeth and I had a serious problem articulating some sounds. I basically hardy spoke then. My first year teacher didn't believe that I can't and made me stand in front of the class everyday as a punishment and verbally abused me for weeks until my mom found out and convince them. Even after that she refused to have me in her class and said I should go to "especial class" . I was so traumatized for years because of her attitude and had speaking problems, even know still have some at 41.

If/when that happens, it should be treated as unconditional assault, possibly GBH, taking someones medical tools and medications off them and they have been informed what they are for. Other people have NO rights, regardless of reason, unless they are certified medics, to take someone else's belongings, putting them at risk. There is no excuse for this kind of behaviour, and especially not by people who should know better, dealing with minors who are in a dependent situation.

I was just now remembering why the elementary teachers were looking at me in a funny way when I spoken a mesh of words of both Russian and English when I was in kindergarten. I was very slow on learning and my choosing for a language to speak was impossible. The teacher that i had before Ms Miller (second time year of kindergarten) would mutter loud enough for me to hear, call me stupid. Wondering why I couldn't decide on talking, while I was trying to do my best. Aspergers ruined my life as kid, still is. I barely understand myself when I talk to people. That teacher even told my mother that I was swearing in class. First of all, I couldn't say anything at all when I was around 5 years old. I started to speak up when I was 9, four longest years I was considered dumb and mute. I hated it. I repeated kindergarten, nearly failed behind 1st and second grade. I was miserable

I may not have a condition like diabetes, not being able to walk, etc. but I have a few emotional disorders that occasionally give me trouble with socializing. Usually I do just fine, but often I can spiral into a nervous breakdown very quickly when I'm forced into doing it and yet my special education teacher didn't understand that for some reason (my other teachers did, though).

I didn't have to deal with this in school but in extracurricular activities. I have asthma and still participated in sports like basketball. I was one of the tallest players on my team usually and sometimes would have to sit out because I couldn't breathe. Some parents said that I was faking my asthma and that there was nothing wrong with me. When I was in high school, I was on the dance team and every year in the fall I would get a chest infection. It usually wasn't very serious and I would usually be ready by the dance day. My coach would let me participate by just standing in the spots I would be in for the dance. Some of the other girls got mad that I was allowed to just stand. They didn't realize that I was practicing with them I was just not wearing myself out.
