As a fellow teacher, this is great to see! He's going to be the one they remember in such a positive way. You never forget the teachers who truly cared about you and your education. And, education does not strictly mean school subjects and curriculum.
Sure, this is a very American concept. Sure, not everything in life is about having fun, Sure, education is a privilege and should be taken seriously. Sure, once you leave school it's not all fun and games. But they're young kids. They have time to learn about being serious when it matters. I've had great teachers all through my education (up to a Masters) that made learning engaging and entertaining and just a real pleasure. I've also had teachers that were all about "sit down be quiet only talk when invited to and lets focus on tests and marks and make it all very stressful because your life depends on it". I know which lessons I remember more.
I love it when people say things like young kids can learn about discipline and "being serious when it matters" later on. Anyone who has kids or has worked with kids knows this so way off the mark.

In so many of the countries that are kicking our a*s in education, it's just accepted that school is a discipline. It's tuff, it's boring, but it's understood that it is also vital so there is not so much of a desire or need to make things fun for the students. Good behavior and good grades are expected regardless. Culturally they just respect school for what it is, a privilege and way up in life. No disrespect to this man, he is fantastic, but I wouldn't care if my kids teacher made school fun for them or not, as long as they got their recesses and lunch.
While "normal" school can be pretty enjoyable for people who like to study, for some people it's torture, and this is not necessarily their fault. I was one of the privileged kids in my class who was intrigued by everything that I was learning, but many of my colleagues couldn't focus at all during classes. I think this kind of approach is more inclusive. A kid can't understand how important school is for their future so they may not make a conscius effort to study, but a teacher does, so any step they take in making sure they're focused is a great idea. A teacher is responsible of giving them the best education that they can and I think this man is doing exactly that.

From the Jabberwocky, and my history tells us stories of the dumb stuff he did as a kid. They're great :)
Load More Replies...I'd like to see what they are going to do as adults when they have to do 'serious' things. Life isn't all about fun. School should prepare you for that. And by that, I don't mean that it can't be fun, but it can't be only fun and no hard work at all.
Yeh because adding in some footage of kids sat still reading/writing is gripping stuff. It's obviously going to be a selective view.

Who says he doesn't discipline his students? He obviously likes to have fun, but who doesn't?! :)
