“Who’s The Dumbest Person You’ve Ever Met?“: Ex-Teacher Shared How A Student Bewildered Their Whole School
Interview With AuthorThe world is full of people with all kinds of character traits. We’re all different, and there are several factors that could influence our lovely and sometimes not so personalities – perhaps you won the lottery and got your mom’s wittiness, or maybe you mastered your first-class sarcasm skills during those challenging teenage years.
In other words, you’ll never know what sort of person you’ll end up meeting on your way, and it’s equally terrifying and exciting. Sometimes you get lucky and meet someone with very lovable qualities – but every so often, you might meet a person who will frankly make you question your entire existence.
This ex-teacher blessed the entire comment section on one of Reddit’s communities by sharing his odd yet somewhat amusing story. A member of the group asked: “Who’s the dumbest person you’ve ever met?” – where the author revealed what it was like teaching a very peculiar 9th grader. In the end, the comment received 17.8K upvotes and remained the number one topic of the whole thread.

Teaching is hard, especially when one of your students keeps doing questionable things

Sure thing, teaching little kids and young teens is exciting, and even rewarding. You inspire them to reach their potential, whilst watching them grow and turn into these great individuals with their own unique mindsets. However, there are times when a student will make you have an existential crisis, and this story is just about that.
Ex-teacher shares a jaw-dropping story about his rather unusual 9th grader

The story took place in Virginia back in 2012, when the OP was on his last year of teaching. In fact, Bored Panda managed to reach out to the author and the man revealed that since then he changed his field and is now working in digital product management in Las Vegas, “where I get sunburnt to hell, eat a bunch, and then try to walk it off hiking and climbing with my wife and two dogs.”
The OP began his story by explaining how it’s fairly normal for some students to be a little bit behind, and that usually the teachers and the school are able to release the kids’ inner knowledge just by practicing and doing a bunch of activities. Besides, people that tutor folks know not to judge a book by its cover – however, in this instance, Kevin did manage to puzzle his whole school.

The author proceeded to explain that Kevin had moved a lot, which is why he missed a bunch of test scores that were typically required when moving schools. Though, it wasn’t a huge problem, and the ex-teacher decided to just have a little chat with Kevin to see where he was at academically.
Although, when the time came, things didn’t go as smoothly as the teacher would’ve wanted. The student seemed very lost, and even led the author to think that he probably suffered from a serious case of amnesia, as there were no other explanations.

Kevin didn’t seem to remember anything past 2nd grade, which is when the author realized that he’d have to find a new way of tutoring the kid. The first thing that made sense was to meet with Kevin’s family and counsellors to really understand why the student was so behind. Though, when the meeting was over, the man connected the dots and realized that the whole of Kevin’s family has a similar character trait.

Bored Panda asked the author to share what kind of relationship Kevin had with his peers. To which the ex-teacher replied: “he was a spectacle, and it turned into a bit of a feedback loop… which ultimately is what I think sort of led to the whole thing being what it ended up being. He’d do something dumb, so a classmate would egg him on to do something else dumb, and then that’d beget yet more dumb things. For instance, I’m fairly confident that a good half of the stuff I wrote he did was because he got dared to or encouraged to by a classmate.”

After that, we wondered about the most intriguing thing, which is where the student is now. The author revealed that he actually used to run into Kevin’s mom around town from time to time. Though, the last thing the OP heard, which was sometime in the middle of 2020, was that Kevin was, in fact, doing quite well.
Moreover, he ended up having a kid with a classmate the year after he was the OP’s student, and he believes that the reality of that sort of hit him like a “burlap bag full of books,” because Kevin managed to shape up and graduate on time.
As well as that, Kevin was working in some kind of leadership capacity in a fine dining kitchen and pursuing an associates in business or something to that effect. He got married and he, his wife, and their son own a home there in town. The author also revealed that for all intents and purposes, his beloved student did better than a lot of his classmates long term.
We also asked about Kevin’s relationship with school’s staff and the OP said: “he was one of a whole cadre of kids that were frequent flyers for detention or an AP’s office, so they were largely unimpressed. By around November or so, we’d given up on trying to figure out ‘why’ and were mostly trying to just figure out how to get him on some kind of track forward. Unfortunately, he had classmates whose behavioral issues required a lot more attention.”
And lastly, the author said that he’s very delighted that Kevin’s story has a happy ending, and that it’s been great knowing how his story has been making people laugh for over 7 years.
Once again, this proves how no one should ever judge a book by its cover, even if the book is all weird and hilarious at times. The fact that Kevin managed to achieve what the majority of his classmates couldn’t is an incredibly positive outcome.
Life is full of surprises, and even though the OP’s precious student might’ve made his last teaching year a living hell – Kevin repaid everyone back by making god knows how many people laugh. What do you think about Kevin?

Share on FacebookAs a person with mutiple learning disabilitues, who had worked in the school system, studied and taught kids with disabilities... Keven did things that were NOT related to any disability. Kid was obviously low IQ, and had parents who were the same. The biggest issue is a working memory disorder, which was never worked on until he had a kid and someone to remember things for. It takes time, but memory games, puzzles, and coding can improve that skill dramatically.
A disorder is still not something to shame someone for. That is why people are criticizing the teacher. You sound like a stand-up, understanding person. I have a suspected, undiagnosed learning disability, likely dyscalculia and perhaps something else. I was treated like I wasn't trying hard enough in school but didn't have enough of a vocabulary to articulate why I couldn't figure out and retain memory of math equations and sums. I've had teachers react towards me not knowing something like they're disgusted with me. My daughter has GDD and has experienced similar things. But there have always been a few school staff that had gotten it and helped out the kids that needed it and didn't allow the other kids to tease them.
Load More Replies...You guys should stop hating on the teacher. Kevin might have a disorder, but his parents also sound inexplicably stupid, so the majority of it probably comes from watching them. As they say, monkey see, monkey do.
I think there are many disorders maybe genetic problems. How does this family continue to exist, do they have a caregiver, how do they earn a living. It sounds like they must be profoundly disabled if everyone in the family is like that.
Load More Replies...I feel like I was on a roller-coaster ride reading this. This is very concerning as well as hilarious both at the same time, but more concerning. This child clearly needs support and help.
..you just summed up all I wanted to say in the best perfect way......still biased towards the hilarity of it though....

The reason he got past grade school was that everyone wanted to get rid of him as soon as possible
He has a mental development disorder. His parents too. He needs special educated and attend a school specialised in mental development. Poor child.
When Bush said “no child left behind” he should have taken a trip to Mississippi or Alabama and checked out the special needs childrens homes. Because he didn’t, those places don’t seem to exist anymore, children like Kevin have been attending normal classes when they shouldn’t even be allowed on school property. Having been a part of this world for a few months, I can tell you that a lot of teachers absolutely hate Bush and a license to breed is definitely necessary.
Bush is loathed even by my conservative friends who are teachers. "All children left behind" is how they sneer it.
Load More Replies...I can see this post as an understandable vent by someone who has had to deal with a difficult student but it's not in any way funny to mock a kid who is clearly developmentally disabled or brain damaged.
I can see both sides. Kevin has some kind of serious problem and should be helped, and he's a dumb kid and some of it is funny. I work with homeless people. I think our society's failure to help people who need help is horrible. I'm also constantly amazed by the dedication some people seem to have to failure. Both can happen at the same time.
I'm sorry, but this is sad. Is this teacher basically saying Kevin is the dumbest person she ever met? What happened to Safeguarding?? This CHILD needs help, not to be mercilessly mocked. WTF?
I'm more disturbed that this person is an English teacher and writes so very poorly. The first half was written using every big word they could choose, even if it didn't quite fit the sentence. And the bullets? So. Many. MIstakes. Not typos. "Kevin say the N-word a lot." The past tense of "spit" is "spat." So, frankly, my sympathy is more for Kevin, who was probably dealt a crappy hand in the brains department.
I came here solely to say that and especially to point out that you’d expect an English teacher to be able to use the correct past tense of the verb ‘to spit”

It's a real part of human history that disabled, low IQ, and otherwise labeled "unworthy" were locked up in inhumane institutions, forcibly sterilized, and all kinds of other abuse. You can joke around without getting THAT close to "haha, eugenics"
Entire family seems to be very, very low in the IQ scale. Hope Kevin doesn't reproduce the way they did.
It's horrific that the teacher thinks this is appropriate for public shaming! Shame on whatever so-called teacher thinks this is appropriate in ANY way. For that matter, shame on Bored Panda.
We don't know the kids name, so it isn't public shaming. If you want to be concerned, be concerned about the fact that someone is creating a story to amuse people based on someone's disability.

This story is very hard to believe. Parts of it might be true but someone who can't tell the difference between dogs & cats shouldn't have an understanding of how to download porn either. His symptoms and behaviors could be explained with a myriad of different diagnoses. Considering his parents, or at least his mother, has an issue with memory too, it makes little sense that this family could actually survive in the world without a tremendous amount of assistance. There's something that doesn't add up here. But, who knows? Anything is possible.
Sorry, but I have had several classmates that have had similar problems. One couldn't tell the difference between a spruce and a birch....we were studying biology at university.

Both of my sister's in laws. One lazy; not wanting to do anything;like work. Other: until 15 years ago thought ALL the shows on tv were REAL.
You know what folks? Lay off the teacher. Sometimes people really are that f*cking stupid & it has nothing to do with a "disability", which many people seem to use as a "get out of having to actually think" card. The kid was a moron, spawned by morons. They do walk among us - generally at a Trump rally.
Also, when Kevin was an adult, he bought property; he bought a casino and it went bankrupt. Kevin also started an airline that went bust; Kevin also started his own brand of steaks and that business went tits up; Kevin also had his own brand of vodka. That went bust. Kevin started his own university but it was a scam. Kevin hired businesses to work on his hotels and then refused to pay them. "Kevin", despite how terrible an example of humanity he is, has a deranged cult of fans who cannot see any of the things he's done wrong and went on to become the 45th President of the United States. He's so dumb that when he was no longer the president of the United States refused to accept that he had lost.
While trying to figure out how these 2 parents met and fell in love, I can only assume they were brother and sister. Sounds like a genetic mess!
Im pretty sure the girl he spat on made a twitter post that was on the "weird/awkard and hilarious conversations people had" article from a week back!
While reading the story I expected the last sentence to be: "Later I was informed that his parents were twin siblings."
I have one question how did this kid get to grade 9. You said he went to a lot of different schools and tests weren't done but holy hell grade 9. this child should not have been in the public school system. I do think the educational system failed him badly - Were you the only teacher from all the ones he had who noticed "something" was wrong! Sorry to say I don't think any one noticed or cared but you! Why was family services not notified. Sounds like the whole family should have been institutionalized!
First thing I thought was that their living space needs to be tested for some kind of environmental hazard. I think the teacher's mocking of this child and his family shows how dumb and insensitive she is.
This is really sad and highlights how ill-equipped general schooling is to deal with situations like these. I hope Kevin, and his family, are able to go get the help they so clearly need. I don't think of them as dumb or stupid, just unlucky to have been dealt the cards they have.
The saying, God watches over fools and children is true. The people who are clueless, are sometimes so right. The rest of us walk around and use the sense God gave us, and pray we use it correctly. Wonder if they ever thought of playing the lottery?
Well he may have some severe learning problems with neglect in it. As someone who also has them. I make fun of my day we all the time. can't say I blame the teacher for sharing this though. It's like moments when I'm dealing with fully mature adults acting like idiots cause they're drunk. Annoying and frustrating as can be in the moment. Amusing in the future.
I feel like Kevin's dad was simultaneously also his brother, uncle, and grandpa
This is where maybe the state needs to step in. How was this kid never put in special needs school. Not programs in a regular school but an actual special needs school.
My uncle once told me about the luckiest guy alive. It's a friend of his that just happen to survive the most strange accidents. The man did things without thinking them through and survived what normal people wouldn't. The last thing I've heard of him was his house burned down, but he was lucky because he could live on the boat he just bought, but the boat sank, but he was lucky because it was in shallow water...
this post is mean 😬 if I know someone like Kevin I'll probably try to protect him and help him instead of shaming him online, he clearly have some kind of disorder and what exactly do you get from shaming him? would you like it too if someone keep tracks on every single mistakes of yours and then share it online?
If they gave me a fake name... I wouldn't really care.
Load More Replies...So this is a child who is likely learning disabled in some way, who has not managed to adapt to any of the cultural or social norms of his age/environment, who has behavioural issues and is clearly struggling with every aspect of his life. And instead of showing understanding or compassion, instead of referring him for appropriate services, instead of being legitimately concerned for his welfare, instead of behaving like someone who has a moral and legal obligation to safeguard the welfare of children in their charge, this "teacher" decides the best thing to do is mock him and his family publicly. I'm not entertained. I'm disgusted.
Was he ever evaluated for any medical issues or disorders? That sounds alarming.
I taught elementary/primary school (retired now) and had a child in my class one year that would put his head through the railings and get it stuck numerous times. He also would put glue in his ears so he couldn't hear me. Met with his parents - needless to say the apple didn't fall far from the tree and his family tree only had one branch.
At least Kevin's parents did not forget Kevin when they went on holiday. Unlike parents of other Kevin.
Was Kevin's name Joe Dirt? Or maybe, better yet, it was Lloyd Christmas
There was a doctor that was recently fired at my hospital. After reading this article I'm pretty sure he is a blood relative.
This is more than just a disability but I still think it's pretty scummy to fingerpoint and laugh at a 'dumb' kid that you've been entrusted with.
Spanish teacher one was horrifying some of the teachers at my school look like Childs but they're not that's horrible grammar but okay there's a few that are really short.
He is a manager at a high end restaurant, married and a father. The post does explain that, in the parts that are not direct quotes.

It was funny at first, but it turned very sad as I read it. (assumes the story is true, it sounds farfetched) This kid has a serious mental health/ learning problem, and needs more help than a typical teacher can give, certainly more than the author.
I'm sure some may have already said it, but the kid has serious problems. It was funny (to me) at first, but it's very sad.
Kevin obviously has intellectual disabilities. Why doesn’t he have an IEP to help him succeed at school to the best of his ability? Why aren’t you and his school helping him get one? It doesn’t seem like you’ve done anything to get this kid testing and help.
I once let myself into my neighbour's house to look for one thing they had forgotten when leaving for the airport. I found a neat stack of passports, tickets, and all the other necessary paperwork. He was a tenured professor.
As a high school public school teacher in USA, I call b******t. If Kevin did half of those things, he would be out of the school and in a special school.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha... sigh.. ha. If only life actually worked that way for every school district, not just yours.
Load More Replies...It sounded like Kevin had a brain injury or something... but then so did his parents??? Both of them???
This is NOT funny and should ne4ver have been posted here. What the F was the school system doing for the poor boy. At the very least SPECIAL schooling to simply teach life skills, - but maybe a residential school. Kids like these have a bloody ROTTEN time in a normal school. BAD school, Bad teacher!!
I hope this is fake because even I, who has a very dark sense of humor and a need to occasionally vent, just could not find this funny. I feel bad for the kid. Why didn't the teacher contact social services to investigate this situation? They could assign a social worker who could get the family the help they need.
This is what I don't understand with PC and cancel culture. Poking fun and being understanding of a situation are NOT opposite sides of a coin. Their different coins! In this case, yeah, the teacher is having a laugh telling Kevin's experiences. But doesn't this mean she is aware of Kevin's issues? And the fact that she has plenty to tell us means they meets often enough to actually show she cares. She cares enough to know the issues, but is light hearted enough to know that sometimes, she just needs to laugh it off too. Show me one person who did not find one iota of humour in it. I'd like to meet that robot.
I see alot of dysfunction in this family according to this article. But it seems that the school, as usual, seems to always wash their hands of it. Its just easier to complain, make a joke, humiliate and do nothing then to actually help the whole family. Kid needs special training and therapy. Not to mention love and tough love. Parents need therapy!! Obviously since no one has bothered to do anything for a few generations I bet?
•Kevin said the N-word a lot. Kevin was white....... F**k Kevin and his dumb ass gene pool.
Yes, f**k white people who use the N-word. Totally agree with you there. But can we please leave the gene pool out of it? That way lies eugenics.

I’m an overthinker and I’m envious of someone who doesn’t think at all. Their lives are spent just reacting and staying in the present moment.

It does read like that. It’s actually a result of the government going in the wrong direction with education.
