With more and more people around the world adapting healthier and more mindful lifestyle choices, the vegan diet has become a choice for many in the past decade. But what happens when some people push their personal choices onto others? This story posted on r/AITA may give us some insight.
It comes from a frustrated author whose vegan stepdaughter, an educated young professional living with parents to save up some money, has been criticizing the way their parents run their lives.
But more than anything, the stepdaughter can’t stand her parents feeding their cat Mango ‘normal cat food.’ In fact, even the sight of meat and dry biscuits made her physically sick and she lost a lot of weight.
However, the parents have categorically refused to switch Mango’s diet to a vegan one, and the tension, you can just imagine, is through the roof in that house. Let’s read the full story below and be sure to share your thoughts on the whole situation in the comment section!
The family drama ensued after vegan stepdaughter said seeing her parents’ cat Mango eat meat makes her physically sick

There’s an ongoing debate on whether cats should benefit from a vegan diet like their owners. So to find out what an expert had to say about it, Bored Panda talked to Molly DeVoss, a certified feline training and behavior specialist who runs Cat Behavior Solutions agency.
“I can appreciate a vegan wanting to feed their pets the same diet because they are sensitive to animal welfare—so am I,” she said and added: “But our homo sapiens species’ nutritional needs are much different than felines’. Humans are omnivores and felines are obligate carnivores.”
That means that “cats require a diet that depends entirely on meat,” Molly said. “There are many other obligate carnivore species, such as dolphins, seals, eagles and walruses.” Moreover, your cat gets essential fatty acids from meat not found in vegetables, said Molly.
“You could provide additives to the vegetarian diet to try to compensate for the missing nutrients, but many are not bio-available to cats. Dogs are omnivores; they get nutrition from both plant and animal sources, and your dog can probably survive on a vegan diet with added supplements to boost the proteins and essential fatty acids.”
Molly herself eats very little meat and feeds her cat a raw rabbit diet, but she added “I, myself, would never eat rabbit and it is emotionally difficult knowing so many rabbits have met their fate to feed my cat; however, I also know my cat cannot thrive on a counter-species diet.”
“Another reason a plant-based diet is hard on cats is their cecum is very small. The cecum is an organ located at the beginning of the large intestine. Felines’ cecum is very small, which makes digestion and absorption of plant matter difficult.”
“Contrast that to the cecum of a rabbit (a herbivore), which is large and contains bacteria that aids in the digestion of plant matter,” Molly concluded.
And this is what people had to comment on this whole situation
If she really gets sick from seeing a cat eat meat, she needs a shrink, not forcing a carnivore to go vegan. It's fine if you want to be vegan, but it's not normal to get physically sick of seeing an animal eat meat.
She absolutely needs to see a professional. It sounds like the vegananism is simply a mask for an eating disorder.
Load More Replies...Like one person already said in the comments, it's morons like the stepdaughter who give vegans their bad reputation of being uneducated, entitled and crazy.
You know what's really horrible about this story? She's pulling this s**t on vegetarians! The humans she lives with just eat dairy, the only being in that house that eats meat is the obligate carnivore. IMHO it gives her double-asshole status, to pull this s**t on people who don't even eat meat.
Load More Replies...What a moron. If she wants a vegan pet, she should get a rabbit. Forcing a carnivore to swtich its diet is animal cruelty, you dumbfck.
Indeed - there are many lovely animals who are natural vegetarians, and lots of them need homes, too. A vegan who really can't stand to be around any kind of meat product should adopt a bunny, a guinea pig or an iguana. And you'd be surprised how many of them are in animal shelters, just waiting for a loving home.
Load More Replies...Felids (Including domesticated, household cats) are obligate carnivores. A vegan diet is therefore inappropriate and, more importantly, unhealthy for a felid.
So this stupid cookie is abusing her parents because she wants them to abuse an animal. Manipulative little s**t, isn't' she? ...///... There's only on solution for her problem. She has a grandmother, and she has a mother. She can "save money" by living with them. She doesn't get to crap on people who are trying to help her. ...///... As for her barfing and weight loss...that is HER problem. SHE needs some serious thereapy.
Cats need taurine, taurine is in meat, without meat the cat will die. f**k that woman.
People are free to choose their lifestyle, but I draw the line when they start pushing it on others, especially kids and pets who need certain things to grow and remain healthy.
Yes. Never ever EVER try to force a cat or a baby to go vegan. It won't work and they will just get sick.
Load More Replies...I'm vegetarian and seeing meat makes me feel quite ill, but I feed my cat meat because he can't possibly consent to having his natural diet changed to fit my wishes.
And that's what shows that you are a loving pet parent - you put his needs above your feelings. I bet your kitty loves you very much!
Load More Replies...Switching carnivore's diet to vegan should be considered animal cruelty. And anyone who thinks it's good idea is either very low with intelligence or psychologically not healthy. Maybe she's pregnant if smell of cat food makes her this sick. Or really manipulative . She should go live in rent and save money a bit longer. Maybe get roommates, that would be slap of reality.
I think the bigger issue here is a child, who has CHOSEN a specific lifestyle, feels like she can dictate that lifestyle upon her parents in their own home? This is the height of lunacy. My oldest son is vegan. He has encouraged me to eat a more plant based diet but we are not going to ruin our relationship over food choice. The girl in this story is a self absorbed, self righteous, spoiled little brat. I love that the parents stood their ground and let her know she could leave if it was a problem..
I know vegans are well known to avoid animal cruelty by being... well, vegan. But at the same time they are being cruel with cats and dogs forcing them to be like them.
Yup. It's not just being cruel, it's completely nuts because cats can't live without meat. :(
Load More Replies...I would tell the MIL who weighed in on this to take the step-daughter in if she's so concerned about her weight, but that you are not going to risk the life of your cat over her because she has a problem with the cat's natural dietary needs. There is also another solution...stay out of the fricken' kitchen while the cat is being fed!
Stepdaughter is not a "young adult" but a manipulating spoiled toddler. Probabaly the MIL too.
To add to your point, MIL is dead wrong that Mango won't be hurt. Mango is a cat. He needs the taurine in meat for numerous reasons. If he's incredibly lucky (which he won't be, since he is elderly) he'll go blind, if not he will end up dying in agony.
Load More Replies...stepdaughter or not, she would not be living under my roof if she didn't respect our way of living
Simple answer, don't be in the room when he's eating. And remembering it's not your house, it's your mothers. Be grateful you are allowed to live there.
How can she even tell the cat food is meat? Almost all pet food (dog or cat) looks like unrecognizable glop. Same with the smell. All in all, very similar in appearance and aroma to many vegan dishes I've seen.
LOL, is this your first time on the Internet? (trying to be funny). I lost faith in humanity since I singed up on Facebook.
Load More Replies...I have a stray cat, and it just comes and goes as he pleases. I bought cat food which is basically fish biscuits and smell gross. My parents are vegan, and they never even complained about the smell, because they are educated enough to understand that every being out there has its specific needs. Humans are lucky to have a choice to be both vegan and non-vegan. Some animals are just non-vegan by nature. The daughter sounds like uneducated when it comes to animals or nature. Before she can talk green, she also needs to learn that plants are also living beings. She needs to see time lapse video on how seeds germinate, and maybe later see a shrink accompanied by her in-laws.
These ''trendy'' vegans disgust me. And nowadays most vegans are just ''trendy'' not an animal lover, animal right activist.
I suspect that the writer's step-daughter has mental health issues - she nags them about many things and her reaction to cat food is extreme. So far, all five vegans I've met have been reasonable people who would never force a vegan diet on a carnivorous animal.

This stepdaughter is mental. She has obsessed so much over veganism that she has become psychotic. Normal people that eat and live a vegan lifestyle do not act this way. This woman has become like a member of anti meat cult.

Could she be pregnant?? Like that's exactly what made my friend feel sick when pregnant. Just a random thought. If it's not all in her head and is legit making her feel ill.
I agree that this young woman's behavior is unfair to her family and to this cat, and of course under no circumstances should this cat be put on a vegan diet. I can't help thinking, though, that the stepdaughter really sounds like someone who is ensnared in an eating disorder and needs help. She's visibly losing weight and is "getting sick" a lot, she's heavily restricting the types of food she's willing to eat, and it sounds like she's feeling very irritable and maybe anxious, which can get worse and worse as her body continues in starvation mode. Also, some people actually develop a sharper sense of smell when they're underweight/malnourished, so she may legitimately be more sensitive to the smell of the cat food than others in the household. Maybe she is just a fanatical vegan with some more growing up to do, but as someone who has been through an eating disorder myself, there are some red flags here for her mental and physical wellbeing. I hope she's able to receive any help she may need.
stepdaughter needs to find another place to live...and her dad is the one that needs to tell her this, not the stepmom. and, mother in law needs to step back; or, she can be a good grandma and have stepdaughter live with her until she can afford her own place. cats are carnivores-end of story. reminds me of this woman i knew in college who felt her parrot could exist on the seeds she separated from her weed. within days, that poor bird couldn't stand up on the bottom of the cage, much less on a perch. thankfully, she did take it to vet who told her she was an idiot and to put it back on a healthy diet.
I really hope they listen to the people who have noted this seems like the stepdaughter has a bigger underlying issue in regards to food or something else. If she is this hypersensitive to everything going around her to criticizing the people she lives with and heaving, she is only hiding behind her beliefs instead of facing a real problem.
I wonder if they told the stepdaughter that cats are obligate carnivores, explained it, showed her scientific proof. If she's a professional whatever she should have brains enough to understand. Unless she's a professional moron.
A working, functional adult is invited into someone else's home. Presumable her rent is nil or minimal since she's 'saving for home". She has the audacity to demand the home owners make lifestyle changes to suit her. I can't imagine ever being civilized to someone that rude under my roof. The father should pack her bags and tell her to move in with her supportive grandmother.
If she's "losing so much weight because of the cat eating" what it has always had, maybe she's trying to throw her dad and you off being anorexic or bulimic. There is no reason she can't eat outside of the home to keep her weight up, but her "retching/vomiting" at the smell or sight of car food is over the limit. I'm glad suggesting she shut up or move out was given. It's your house. Your pet. Your rules. She is a guest. My 5 cats eat healthy foods. I wouldn't change them to vegan because a guest was nauseated over it.
I respect vegans but That Vegan Teacher and this girl do not have my respect
Could always just start feeding the cat vegans. Then, hey presto! Vegan diet.
The reality is, petfood food is essentially made out of industrial waste products. "Ash","crude protein","animal products" etc. If anything they are stopping landfill and other waste streams. The main environmental impact fro. Pet food is packaging and transportation.. something vegan petfood would undoubtedly also require. It's funny because you can objectively prove veganism is potentially worse for the environment...
Throw that spoiled brat (the girl, not the cat) out of the house. Cats will die of malnutrition if fed a vegan diet. She is not only inconsiderate of the cat, she is trying to tell her parents how to run their lives. If I had to choose between her and the cat, I’d pick the cat in a New York minute.
cats need taurine, this is vital for them. absolutely crucial. I don't know personnally (even if vegan, but not cat owner) if a vegan diet can compensate this. But taurine is vital for cats. so keep this in mind if you're vegan, and plan to adopt a fur ball. regarding the girl story above, i think that even if i understand her, she shouldn't tell other people what to do. she should debate, but not try to enforce other people
I'd rather eat with a vegan than with someone who bangs on about steak or bacon and thinks that makes them superior.
