I love observing life and drawing comics about what I see. I’ve been drawing and reading comics since I was a kid. I especially like comics about real experiences. Everyone’s different, but we all share thoughts and feelings in common. I enjoy reading about people who are unlike me, who live in faraway places or who have different lives, so I can see the ways we’re alike. Comics are a way of understanding each other.

I’m drawn to slice-of-life, both as a reader and as an artist, because it creates a real connection between my experience and someone else’s. Here are some comics that give my take on everyday life and relationships. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed making them.

One word: Microwave. Loosens up rock hard ice cream.

yeah but then it re-freezes and it's more dense causing freezer burn and it is even harder to get out the next time. I recommend soaking the scooper in hot water so it easily glides through the ice cream!

Or you could wait the 15-20 minutes it takes for the icecream to soften enough.

Exactly. Take the ice cream out of the freezer before you have dinner

This selection of short comics is about my relationship with Mel—she keeps me real! I included many of my favorites. Some of these memories still make me smile, and all of them were fun to draw.

Sometimes I draw just to share something I think is funny. That’s why I like drawing comics about Mel. She’s sharp and has a great sense of humor, and she’s not afraid to tell it like it is. When I read these comics, I smile to myself, because I remember how I felt when she said these things.

Where do you get a car like that? It seems a very good idea to let people think you are poorer than you actually are, and the risk of it being stolen is probably less than with a fancy new car.

You keep whatever car you drive now until it costs more than $4000 to repair.

Ha ha being thought of as poor is the worst. Poor people are terrible let's all laugh at poor people. The worst insult you could call someone is poor. Oh wait no this one has a horrible message.

A short four-panel comic is the perfect form for a fun commentary on relationships and life. Sometimes, I’ll do two or three comics in a row to make a longer story. Other times, each one stands alone like a little poem.

I came face to face with a mountain lion while walking my dog up in Oregon... My brain screamed at me bear, no, CAAAAT. And I slowly backed away with my doggo. Whew, close call!

I was hiking with my dad and his new service-dog-in-training, she was learning to behave off leash, not to run off and chase things. Something went running off ahead of us, and she went after. Our conversation went Rabbit? Too red. Fox? Oh no! Wait...foxes don't climb trees. Cat! Cougar kitten! Where's mama? You idiot dog get back here that kitty doesn't want to play!!! ( She liked cats.) She had very good recall and we got her in leash and headed back the way we had come FAST!

Sometimes ideas come to me at the strangest times: on a walk, in the middle of the night, or when I’m at work. If something makes me laugh or think, I know it’s something I want to share with other people. That’s why I take my drawing pad everywhere I go.

I get that feeling. I was so sick of always having to pick everything that I don't mind surprises and going along with what other people choose. I can be super indecisive, too, that people get annoyed with me. Just pick out of the bunch I had in mind. I'll be good with it.

I feel like as a society we've literally become spoiled for choice. Back in the day, you watched whatever was on TV, ads & all and now? 4 streaming services and can't choose what to watch. Same with ordering food or choosing clothing online- it's almost impossible to make a quick and decisive choice.

Having more choices can be good if you're very particular - more chance there will be an acceptable choice

ummmm drawing and writing are different

My slice-of-life comics start out as sketches. I use a mechanical pencil to rough out my thoughts on a situation, sometimes while things are still happening. If there’s time, I might even start inking right then.

At one time, I had the idea of doing comics journalism, trying to draw comics in real time while events were happening. But it was challenging. First, it is very difficult to draw that fast. Second, it makes it hard to be present with whatever is going on. When I’m hanging out with friends, I just want to be with my friends instead of staying by myself and drawing. These days, instead of trying to draw things as they happen, I just jot down a few notes so I don’t forget what I noticed.

I draw comics to help me remember and share how something made me feel. Most of the time, they’re about happy things, but I also share things that made me angry, sad and a rainbow of other emotions. I try to be honest and share my true self so I can connect with my readers through shared experiences.

My dad ruined my pesto by throwing in too many garlic cloves, three extra to be exact. Because clearly "You can never have enough garlic!" I made him eat most of it because my mom and brother didn't like how much garlic there was, and neither did I

32 years and my long-haired husband let me TRIM 1/8 inch off the very end of his butt length braid so it was straight across, ONCE. I owned my own salon, ffs!! Lolz I guess he was onto something because now he's the only one of all our male friends with hair!

The nice thing about drawing short comic strips about life is the opportunity to notice things even if they’re small. Something tiny but relatable can be very interesting. I think about things that are even smaller, that I haven’t drawn comics about yet—like the sound a paper cup makes, or the feeling of the second sip of a cup of coffee in the morning. There are always things to observe and share about the world, and I hope some of these things will resonate with you.

Thanks for reading these comics! I hope you find them relatable. Please take the time to let me know what you think, and check out my Instagram for more!

I heard a father admonish his daughter this tuesday, while waiting for the train. He tried to explain to her, that if she changed the rules all the time in order to win, people would stop playing with her. I think Mel need to hear that.
