Completely neglected and almost falling to pieces, this little fish was severely suffering at the back of a Walmart store, and its condition couldn’t have been worse. He was in such poor shape that he was about to lose his tail and fins.
Victoria Schild was not planning to buy any pets that day but after noticing this abandoned fish at the back of a store, she knew that she has to rescue him. “I felt incredibly sad for the little guy and decided that I didn’t want him to die in there, just rotting away,” Schild told The Dodo, “I was 95 percent sure he was going to die that night.”When she brought him home she was worried that he had only hours to live, but she was not willing to give up. Victoria did everything within her power to save this little fish. “When I got home, I started researching everything that I possibly could to help him recover, and probably within a week of clean warm water, medicine and basic care he started getting better!”
After that, his condition improved enormously – his tail began to regrow and his fins returned to normal. After weeks of medication, this little guy transformed into a beautiful, healthy fish!
Schild named him Argo, in homage to his glorious, sail-like fins. Victoria hopes that Argo’s story will bring awareness to the conditions that these fishes are being held in at stores. Scroll down to see Argo’s incredible transformation!

Victoria Schild found this poor fish rotting in the shadows of one Walmart store
“I felt incredibly sad for the little guy and decided that I didn’t want him to die in there, just rotting away”
So she brought him home despite being “95 percent sure he was going to die that night”
“When I got home, I started researching everything that I possibly could to help him recover”
And the little guy didn’t give up, “within a week of clean warm water, medicine and basic care he started getting better!”
Slowly his tail has regrown and fins returned to normal
“I knew that underneath it all, there was a beautiful little fish. But what won me over was his will to live and his spunk”
What only a month was a fish with mere minutes of life left in it, is now called Argo, because of his beautiful sail-like fins
This is so pure and beautiful. Fish are so much more wise than people give them credit for or care to research. Kudos -:)
You are so kind to do this! It means a lot to the fish to get another chance. Keep doing this!
though what she did a wonderful thing & thank goodness she was able to revive & give a few happy days to Argo & am grateful for them both. maybe if less folks stopped buying horridly neglected, abused fish so inexpensively from such corporations only focused on the end revenue results - none of the fish or animals are ever considered. they don't care.

PandaLove , I have a question. I don't have fish and don't intend on getting any but you seem to know about them. Are these the same as what they call Siamese Fighting fish? I always see the SFF in teeny tiny bowls and when I say anything about it the response is always, "oh that's what they need." or "that's what they like." or something like that. I think that seems odd. It seems cruel but what do I know? It's not that way in nature but every single time I see them they're in tiny containers. Does anyone know anything about this? It seems wrong.

Because it's WalMart. They don't care. I've seen WalMarts selling "Fresh water fiddler crabs." There is no such thing. Fiddler crabs are salt water, always. Their already short lifespans will be cut even shorter when people buy them and keep them in fresh water thinking it's OK. It's also why most pet stores that sell hermit crabs will sell them with painted shells. They're more concerned with making money than with the welfare of the animal.
Load More Replies...It was great to do this but and its a big BUT. Every time someone buys a fish from Walmart they buy more to sell. Write letters to them so they stop selling fish.
I know this sounds hard, but the only way to stop animal cruelty in walmart and similar shops, is to refuse to buy animals there. If there is no market for animals in shops like that, they have to stop offering them long term.
Making people feel sorry for animals is after all one of the best strategies for making a lot of money. (In spain f.e. they put dogs and cats in so small cages it hurts looking at them, and as soon as one gets bought, they replace it with another one)

June of 2001, Houston was hit by T.S. Alison, with 38" of rain in 6 days. I was out of the country during the storm. Revoke license to sell live fish. But an enormous "Thank You" to the Lady, and you did well. When shopping myself I will make a detour so that I do not have to see the unfortunate in the habitats the store provides.
I would have called him Nemo! Can't believe a wee fish can bring such tears of sadness and joy. Sob.....

Thank to the lovely kind lady who rescued the little fish, shame on you Walmart for leaving the fish in that condition,
Walmart has no right selling any living things! Even plants, staff have no time to give proper care!
WalMart should have been prosecuted for such heinous abuse by neglect.
Thank you to this beautiful human for rescuing Argo. And Walmart can Argof*** themselves - they should have been prosecuted for such heinous abuse by neglect.
Never go to the pet section in Walmart. ALL the fish are dying and eating the dead carouses. But they have mini puffer fish.
Good for her ,I also have a soft spot for animals in less than idea conditions that I could help and nurse back to help.
I have had several of these fishes over the years, the last one I names Sushi. He had the best personality of them all. Most people don't know that some fish actually have personalities. These little guys are just so beautiful to watch. Everyone should help out and save a Beta!
I am always appalled at the condition of these fish (because they will fight to the death, you can only have one per tank) but they do get along fine with other fish. My daughter has raised these for years... She has 2 tanks with one in each. They are absolutely beautiful fish...
So kind of you! Most people would walk by this little fish and say it was worthless but you saved him!! You are a very special person!
I saw this and cried! I probably already commented, but I'm just so happy.....!! I don't remember.... But I remember the angel lady who saved this creature who had such a will to just BE!! 💖💖💖💖
That Lady has a big heart. Argo is beautiful and has a wonderful for ever home.
This is awesome, Just shows you pets of ANY kind should not be in stores like Walmart. those people have no idea how to care for any kind of animal
What a beautiful story! I had a male betta fish we named Larry and he had the cutest little personality! He once jumped out of the tank and was on the floor where my husband might easily have rolled over him with the chair, but I noticed he wasn't in the tank. I screamed "Larry's not in the tank! Don't move!" ...he scooped him up and put him back in the tank (and then we got a bigger tank, with a lid). Little Larry lived about 5 years!
That's beautiful. Better name than my beautiful fighter... "flappy f*cker". :)
Those little bettas can have such a personality. I'm so glad this little guy pulled through! Thank you, Ms. Schild, for restoring some of my faith in my fellow human beings.
We have a Beta in our tank and what you did to save this little guy is amazing. Pets are pets and all should be given proper food and care. Walmart should have been reported .
Walmart should be ashamed, leaving the poor fish to suffer like that !!
Thank you sooooo much for saving him and letting him know love! You are right that there are many fish suffering in stores all over; even the pet stores are guilty of it. But if you feel like rescuing these little guys, ESPECIALLY if you want to save a sick one, do one very important thing first: TEST YOUR WATER. Most places do it for free if you bring in a sample; take about 1/4 cup. Even if you have added a product that 'will make it safe for fish,' have your water tested. I made the mistake of thinking my water was fine, and I lost fish I was trying to save. This is a really wonderful thing you've done and good luck to anyone else who decides to try!
WOW! Amazing recovery. A testimony to the fish's will to live and its owner's compassion.
Many, many moons ago I had a goldfish in a decent sized bowl that I kept clean who developed what was later diagnosed as ick, I believe, which was caused by not enough sunlight. The pet shop I took him to said it was incurable and he would just be eaten away by it. I wish I been given the advice Victoria was given. I still feel badly about it nearly a lifetime later.
Many, many years ago I had a goldfish in a decent sized bowl that I cleaned regularly. It got what I later was told was ick from too little sunlight and there was nothing I could do to reverse it. Wish I had been given the advice that Victoria was given. It still bothers me nearly a lifetime later.
I get sad every time I go into a store that sells fish. Especially the Bettas. They don't deserve to live in those little cups. Kudos to you for believing in the power of love and a little time!
My brother loved fish. He had kept some in lavish environments, and took wonderful care of them.

Kudos to this lady with a heart and vision. What a beautiful fish he turned out to be after all.
If only there were 10x many humanitarians, as there are people like you, our hearts and outpourings to others would be like a beautiful rainbow, different every waking day. Gee, that was poetic......
poor fish! i can't believe Walmart did that! I'm happy to see he has a nice person to look after him
Isn't it illegal to have an animal in bad condtions in a store? If the poor fish was like that maybe Walmart should take responsability, shouldn't it? Someone can think "it's just a fish", but to me it doesn't say anything good about the store.
huge retail stores with minimum-wage paid staff that know nothing about caring for animals should in no way, shape or form, be allowed to sell living creatures.
That's so beautiful. I now wish I had the money to go save a betta fish in a classroom I was in yesterday. He's about 3 and falling apart. He was left for the past week without food by accident but the teacher told me he's been getting older and falling apart, swimming in odd positions so they are just waiting for him to die. Anyway, they discovered he was still alive yesterday. One student cleaned his bowl and fed him. It's a small bowl, no bubbler. I just felt awful. I told the studnt later she should get him a bigger tank or at least a bubbler. But I was met with how expensive that would be and basically it's not her fish. I am very, very poor at the moment. I mean I might lose my home and I can't pay my bills poor. I workas a sub and I'm terrified what will happen in a couple of months if I don't get full time work. I only make,$95 a day before taxes. So, I would have offered to take the fish myself but I can't do anythIng for him. Poor thing! This was so sweet.
Thank you!!! I have 2 Betta's...I love them...they do have personalities♥️.....especially when it is time to eat!!
Why the f**k does the USA version of Asda sell fish!?! Wrong on all levels. Kudos to this lady

Little things, done for little things make a huge impact. It is still a LIFE that you saved. You have all rights to feel like a hero!
You're a nurturer. Well-done! Best wishes to you and the lovely fishie!
Wasn't there one post like this before except it was about a guy and it took place at some pet store
This is really similar to another fish stort from petsmart or something. o.o Are retail just really bad at this...? Are they clueless, and is it hard or anything? You'd think if their selling it they'd care about it, you need good products for customers to buy. :p At least they habe happy homes now. <3
Walmart sucks. They treat people and animals poorly. Boycott. I've not entered or shopped a Walmart or subsidiary in over a year and it feels good. I've saved money, by not buying useless 'that's so cheap!' things. Please try it. Boycott Walmart
There is a false opinion that these fish must nit be kept among other fishes since they will harass then, but its nit true! They can easily live with other fish in a big tank providing thee are no two males living together and thee are a few females. Keeping them in critucally small containers is supercruel and should be forbidden
thank you for rescuing him! bettas are beautiful creatures that deserve the same amount of love and care as any other animal. just because you cant hold or cuddle it doesnt mean it should be abused and neglected. bettas are extremely personable and love interacting with its surroundings. i am a fishkeeper but mainly keep bettas and i cant imagine keeping them in small vases or tanks because it is cruel and they do not live in such small spaces in the wild. the smallest i would go is a 5 gallon long. my betta literally uses every inch of his filtered and heated 5.5g tank. he rarely sits still, always on the go lol, just loves sitting and playing in the plants and his floating log. in those little cups they keep in the store bettas are literally living in toxins that will stress, weaken and kill them. would you let a dog live in a area filled with high amounts of ammonia or toxic fumes? no you wouldnt. so why should bettas live in such environments?
Haha, obviously she has never tended a beta fish before. All fighting fishes are like that. They can regrow their fins and tails because they often lost them in fighting. As a kid, we gave them rain water and sometimes absolute darkness to recover. I don’t know if it’s scientific helpful or not.
I absolutely love people who give care to any living creature like this. If a person can nurture any weakened thing in an altruistic manner simply to make it feel better then that person is, to me, somehow on a little higher plane than those who only see a dumb fish.
I think hes a Siamese fighter, but what a great job bringing him back to health! well done!!
PETA should be protesting outside any department or variety store selling ANY animals -- birds, fish, hamsters. Those little creatures are in hell.
Welcome to our threshhold: choose regenerative care for all life, and watch this "s**t show" on earth transform away from the neglect, hate, separation, and despair that shows up as a dying fish in a Corporate store; a dying earth, that shows up to wake us up, and a broken heart, showing me I need to sing and serve my gifts. Stay close to loved ones and/or, if you are alone and isolated, take gentle care and when you can: pour your love into the world until it is what you are swimming in. This is what I tell myself now, as my world feels much like that fish when it was a WalMart prisoner. "Rest. Be free! Swim freely in this sea of Love, and find those who fan your flames. I know my life can be as beautiful as this healthy fish: colorful, full spectrum, spectacular & flowing, such is life! True Life. Our true Nature. The Beauty of our true Nature supported, no longer suppressed. I can help if you need a friend, because I was that fish, for years! Aloha from Maui, Claire 808-344-1228

so Pattana if I understand what you're saying, you use these fish for gambling right? You use them to fight? So they actually fight each other? To the death i guess huh? Is that what you're telling us? And it's your "sport"? Your game? You make money off of their death? Maybe I misunderstand your myriad posts but it seems like that's what you're gleefully trying to tell us with your "ha ha lol" Yes? No?

Load More Replies...It's great how Schild grew back Argo's extremely rotted fins! Good on you Schild! :D Also, I'm not sure how to say this clearly, but: Betta fish don't NEED large(>50L)tanks. They're healthy in small (>9L) tanks. It's a big misconception that a small tank is extremely cruel and should be avoided at all costs. (Something very small, like a cup is not okay though. The cup has bent the spine of my fish, which is now just straightening) Bettas defend no more than a foot square of territory too. If a betta was in a 50L tank with a filter, but whose water hasn't been changed for months the fish will either be sick or dead(fin rot & bacterial infections are common in dirty water). If the fish was in a beanie box, had regular water changes & therefore clean water, it will be healthy. Of course, a large tank is encouraged as it means temperatures and water parameters are more stable. So yes, big tanks are awesome! But! Myth: small tanks kill. Truth: water quality matters & big tanks are betta!
Truly beautiful. Hopefully the fish didn't die and got replaced overnight by the husband ;-) in order to make her happy

I hope this will be an example of Canada's Culture after we vote out the (proven) Corrupt Liberal Party of Ontario Government & as incredible to think, the even greater Damage to Canada's Culture caused by the (proven) Corrupt Liberal Party of Canada Government when we vote out them out next year. If the Existing Feckless Liberal Party Cabinet had any compassion or want to be re-elected it will only take from 16 to 20 Liberal M.P.s voting non-Confidence in the Trudeaus-Butt's Government to save another Year of Damage.
I love that’s that you did this. TOO many fish rot to death in stores like Walmart.🐠🐠🐟🐠🐟🐟🐠
Sob.....
Thank to the lovely kind lady who rescued the little fish, shame on you Walmart for leaving the fish in that condition,
Thank to the lovely kind lady who rescued the little fish, shame on you Walmart for leaving the fish in that condition,
Walmart has no right selling any living things!
Load More Replies...Victoria, you are my hero of the week. You showed such kindness to this poor fish. Blessings on you.
Organ of Siamese Fighting Fish Can grow like a lizard. The organ sprout itself.
Thailand is very much a source of breeding. you can search word ปลากัดไทย or ปลากัดจีน 2018-03-20...d18c73.jpg
China is also called Chinese bite fish. haha lol e0b89be0b8...fd1b23.jpg
You are such a wonderful kind and caring person to help this little fish. His beauty and tenacity is your reward for compassion. Great job.
Fighting fish Thailand I have a lot. To fight for gambling. China is also called Chinese bite fish. lol haha bet-5-5ab0...587ec0.jpg
lol Fighting fish Thailand I have a lot. To fight for gambling. China is also called Chinese bite fish. ha ha
so Pattana if I understand what you're saying, you use these fish for gambling right? You use them to fight? So they actually fight each other? To the death i guess huh? Is that what you're telling us? And it's your "sport"? Your game? You make money off of their death? Maybe I misunderstand your myriad posts but it seems like that's what you're gleefully trying to tell us with your "ha ha lol" Yes? No?
Load More Replies...I don't think Walmart has sold live fish for a long time. Stop spreading old news.
it isnt old news. there are still some walmarts that sell live fish
Even though you are clearly someone who Eatsalot, I would not recommend this.
