‘End Tipping’: 45 Pics That Show Tipping Culture In The US Needs To Change, And Fast
Interview With ExpertTipping is a hot topic in the United States. Minimum wage and tipping laws vary from state to state. Many people believe that the culture revolving around leaving tips is deeply flawed and bad for employees. However, it is so deeply entrenched in the American psyche that big changes are difficult to fathom.
The r/EndTipping subreddit aims to shake things up so that “US workers aren’t reliant on tips.” Members of the online community share examples of just how ridiculous and shameless demands for tips can get. We’ve curated a list of the most powerful pics to show you that the system really does need to change when things are as egregious as this. Scroll down to see for yourselves, Pandas.
Bored Panda wanted to learn about how customers can gently push back against Tipflation (tip inflation), so we got in touch with Max Alberhasky, Ph.D. He was kind enough to share his thoughts on this, as well as how changes in the minimum wage can affect tipped employees. Alberhasky is an Assistant Professor of Marketing at California State University Long Beach and is the author of the insightful ‘Psychology, Money, and Happiness’ blog on Psychology Today.

Where the hell is a Molly Moon place?!?! Take my money. I’ll buy all my pandas ice cream.

It's so sad this is the exception. I really wish these people the best in the world!
It's not an exception in Washington state. Washington state requires employees to pay a minimum wage ($19.97/hr) even if someone gets tipped. So, in a restaurant, a tipped employee will make minimum wage PLUS tips. Molly moons is offering $8 an 8 hour shift over what other employers are REQUIRED to pay and those other employees are likely making more than $1 worth of tips each hour.

Owners fear losing customers by raising prices to cover a living wage. But what's the difference between paying up front or coughing up a tip afterwards? Math! No more struggling with math.
Good for them. Where I live that would be great for me but I am single and retired SoI really don't need to worry about that. But for a family of four not sure if that would be a viable income.
Marketing expert Alberhasky explained to Bored Panda how customers can gently push back against Tipflation. According to him, it helps when people have a number in mind going into the purchase when they’re asked to tip. This can be any percentage of the bill.
"Having a standard amount you want to tip going into a purchase helps prevent nudges to tip more (which is common on tablets via high default choices) or social pressure from the cashier or those behind you in line to make a fast decision," he told Bored Panda in an email.
Even High Earners Are Sick Of The Shenanigans
Wow, in every job I've ever worked that was tipped, it would have been a MAJOR faux pas to ASK for a tip. As one of my old bosses said "if you have to ask for a tip instead of it being offered, you probably don't deserve one".
I noticed this request for tips years ago when counter staff had tip jars next to the register. So, I have to stand to put in my order, mill about with strangers until it's ready, then carry it to a table, which I bus after finishing. And YOU want a damn tip?
I'm guessing this was full service where you drop off your laundry, they wash it & fold it for you, then you come back & pick it up. I'm also guessing that you are folding your own laundry for that 2€ at home. If you were selling that service to strangers wouldn't you be charging a bit more?

So they have a tipless policy and they are happy to take tips. Okay, got it.
You're not required to tip, but may do so if the service was really good. Just like it is done in more civilised countries
Load More Replies...Some people here really have lost all sense. Saying "tipping not necessary, but do so if you feel particularly satisifed" is not contradictory. It's EXACTLY how tipping is supposed work, and indeed is exactly how it does work here in the civilised world.
I think what's contradictory about this sign is that in one sentence they call tipping discriminatory, and in the last sentence they say they're happy to accept tips. I don't think they can have it both ways unless they're endorsing discrimination. And remember, *they* said tipping is discriminatory, not me. IMHO, they need to remove either the 2nd or 4th sentence to make the policy consistent with itself. If they truly believe tipping is discriminatory, don't accept tips. If they want to accept tips, don't call it discriminatory.

Here they come, and there they go... They came very close to getting it right, they they turn around and contradict themselves? I think the best thing to do is avoid them.
You can't say you don't support tipping and then say you support tipping.
Signs everywhere should read "TIPPING AND TIPPING PERCENTAGE FOR SERVICE RENDERED IS UP TO YOU, THE CUSTOMER. HAVE A NICE DAY."
"Sticking to your guns in terms of what you tip for standard service helps to provide a buffer when nudges or social pressure arise when you're paying," he said.
“Research from Uber and former Chief Economist John List suggest most consumers have a habit or idea in mind for what they prefer to do, with 60% of riders never tipping, 20% of riders always tipping, and 20% of riders deciding to tip or not based on the quality of their ride.”
Alberhasky also commented on the drastically different minimum wages across various states in the US. "Service industry workers doing the same job in California likely earn more than workers in Nebraska. If the overall minimum wage is increased, it may indirectly affect tipped employees," he told Bored Panda.

Cash only avoids these screens yall. No card swipey just pure hard fiat bills in hand. Unless you're telling me cash is not being taken ( which is illegal it says on the money bill good for ALL DEBTS ) ( US speaking )
Not sure if it's the same in the US as UK, but despite being good for "all debts" it doesn't mean you have to accept it. If the store refuses to sell you a muffin because they don't take cash, you have no muffin therefore there is no debt. What "all debts" means is that if I *already* owe you $50 and offer to pay in cash, if you refuse to accept it you cannot then later claim in court that I didn't make a good faith attempt to repay you. (The UK also has limits on the amount of cash that you can offer for it to count as "good faith" - if you try to pay £100 debt in pennies it doesn't count.)

The expectation for a tip is every at coffee shop and bubble tea place I go to.
I really wish people would understand the background of these stupid screens. The prompt is part of the software that is being used, which is a POS (Point of Sales) system, originally pretty much exclusively in restaurants/bars... Where this screen doesn't seem so out of place. However, nowadays many diverse businesses employ the same software/hardware as a touch screen register (it's way more efficient than manual). Ergo, we get prompted for tipping at the most unsuspecting businesses simply because of the register system they have. The way I see it... Tip your server, bartender, cabbie, hairdresser, tattoo artist... If you feel pressured by a screen after buying a new appliance or something-- That's on you.
To have a tip screen is a option you select when you're setting up the POS system. It's not there because they have no choice. It's there because they chose for it to be. So they can try squeezing extra money out of you. A lot of times the cashier actually doesn't get the tip. The business does.

Additionally, changes in the minimum wage can have broader economic implications, usually impacting the cost of goods and services purchased, which may impact tipping practices," Alberhasky explained.
"In circumstances where tipping is the norm (bars, restaurants, coffee shops), increasing wages and prices is likely to lead to higher tips because customers are tipping the same percentage on a larger bill. In circumstances where tipping is not standard yet it's an option (fast food restaurants, bowling alleys, tattoo shops), increasing prices is likely to decrease tipping because customers are facing an expensive bill that would make tipping additional money seem unreasonable," he said.

No, I'm Not Tipping A Hotel Booking Website
Exactly! This is why most people balk at tipping, even though that personal shopper who went and got your grocery order and delivered it to your door deserves a nice tip for the PERSONAL SERVICE.
Load More Replies...This is why you book with the hotel not 3rd parties. That tip doesn't even go to anyone in the hotel.
Nor should it in this case. The tip is for the company that is saving you money. The problem as I see it is that they're already making money along the way anyway, whether from fees for the hotels to list on their site, or a cut of the actual booking, or some other way. So there shouldn't need to be a tip.

No service was provided. It was literally one of those “express” shops where you grab things like tissues, snacks, etc.
Yep. Was there 2 weeks ago. Not only do I grab it all myself and ring myself up but there isn't even a human in the shop. Who am I being asked to tip??
I was wondering that too. Maybe there's a giant POS system somewhere collecting that money and using it to grow bigger and bigger in an attempt to take over the world.

The tipping system in the US is convoluted and confusing, to say the least. Wage laws and attitudes toward minimum wages vary from state to state.
Pew Research Center calls it a patchwork system: “For example, a restaurant server in Waukegan, Illinois, is entitled to a $13 minimum wage—$7.80 in direct wages from the restaurant, plus a $5.20 tip credit. But for a server 17 miles away in Kenosha, Wisconsin, the minimum is $7.25—with $2.33 in direct wages from the restaurant, plus a $4.92 tip credit.”
As Pew points out, the minimum wage for most workers, under US federal law, is $7.25 per hour. However, there is a major caveat.
If an employee is a tipped employee, their employers can pay them just $2.13 per hour… so long as they get the remaining ‘tip credit’ of $5.12 per hour in tips. The employer is bound to make up the difference if their employees do not meet this minimum in tips.
Gratuity Isn’t Gratuity If It’s Automatically Added To A Bill
20% gratuity was automatically added to our bill for a party of 2 while the receipt says it’s added for a party of 5. On top of that the receipt given back to you pretends like they didn’t just add a tip and leaves another line for a tip
I was in Miami 2 weeks ago and almost every restaurant at Miami Beach had a Gratuity added (the note was at the end of the menu) and you were expected to tip too. What's the point of the 20 % then?
I'm wondering whether the forced "gratuity" money ever finds its way into the pockets of the wait staff.
Load More Replies...Unless there's a visible sign upon entry informing diners that gratuity will be added, as well as being noticeably listed on the menu, this should be illegal because it smacks of bait and switch. I may be old, but I can still do a dine and dash.
It's usually in small print by the register but is there
Load More Replies...Can you choose not to include the first tip? Imagine if the service was not very good, why would you still leave a tip that is not optional?
Same. Tip automatically added on a bill for 3 people. Caught it bc I was splitting it and the math wasn't adding up.
I feel they were lucky they got to keep it! EVERY time this happens to me, where it was NOT stated or posted somewhere before hand, I will subtract the added "gratuity" then give the bill back signed! Now, because you tried to cheet me, you now get NOTHING! (Usually, followed by an evil laugh) MUHH-HAA-HAAA!!!!......🤪
They automatically add gratuities in many or most tourist areas because they know many don't understand the custom (at least in the US, but I also live in an area with huge amounts of foreign visitors). I don't like it either, but some touristy spots are great! They want to add 18%, but I generally tip 30%! Forced? Nope.

In part, this is to victimize people who can't do math. (If you want to leave a 20% tip, move the decimal place one digit to the left and then double that. $53.40 meal - tip 5.34x2 = $10.68))

The minimum wage in 30 US states and the District of Columbia is higher than the federal minimum. The variety is massive. It ranges from $8.75 per hour in West Virginia to nearly twice that—$17—in DC.
The tip credit also varies greatly. For instance, in Virginia, the minimum wage stands at $12. However, the tip credit is $9.87, meaning that the actual minimum wage (depending on your employer and company) can be $2.13, with the rest being considered tip credit.
However, some states (e.g. California) have refused to accept tip credit as a workable concept altogether. This means that companies are supposed to pay their employees a fixed minimum wage (e.g. $16 per hour in California, far higher than the federal minimum of $7.25 per hour). They can also keep any tips they get on top of that.

It is literally a self-serve standard hotel breakfast. The only thing the "attendant" did was put out a few more oatmeal packets.
I don't know if people have actually watched those who do the breakfast service at hotels it's usually someone who's part of housekeeping so I don't mind as much. They aren't expecting much. Just appreciation that someone is actually doing the work.

I don't know why you got downvoted, this is exactly why to tip in cash! The waitress doesn't have to pay tax on everything, most places allow estimation of tips earned. Ie you actually got $150 on Friday night but the accountant will estimate at min wage/hour. Or they have staff track their amount. If they wish to pay taxes on 100% they can claim it on their own to irs. For the abuse servers receive let them keep a few tax dollars.

I think it's extremely unfair for to pay any server under $3 an hour! They can't always depend on people tipping them and sometimes they don't get their tips until the end of the month or whenever the bookkeeper does the tally of the credit card sales and awaits for the bank to release the funds for payment
Since I suspected this might be the case, I usually pay with card and tip with cash.

If you are an Uber Eats driver/deliverer you have no "in-store coworkers". You work for s different company, and picking up food for other people is part of your job. Why should you tip? It's mad!
Why should a driver from a different employer be forced to tip some other employees work? Even Applebee's pays their carside actual wages! And I HATE APPLEBEES for the sh*t treatment of staff!
This is corporate greed. Instead of paying their employees, they allow a sign begging the underpaid, overworked employees of another corporation pay THEIR underpaid overworked employees for them
Wow now they want the people who are making deliveries for income to tip too. Thats INSANE
Why would the drivers need to tip people this is ridiculous!! It's not their food!
Many Americans feel pressured to tip larger and larger sums. This effectively means that going out for dinner ends up costing far more than the customers might have anticipated. The issue is that you’re expected to tip because the servers’ livelihood depends on it.
Tipping becomes less of a reflection of good service and more of a way of supporting employees who might be living paycheck to paycheck. The responsibility, which should rest on the employer’s shoulders, is passed down to the customers.

Even if you do tip which I refuse to anymore. I wouldn’t tip on the taxes either. Back in the day you tipped on the sub-total not after taxes.
I am trying to imagine what a business would have to do that would make me think a 100% tip was justified. Haven't come up with anything, but it would have to be downright *spectacular*.
Not supposed to tip on the tax. Should only pay on 28 dollars. Total 29.96-1.96 tax=28. Plus there is no way I would pay even 35 percent. I am a poor person. The most I would pay is 25%. Which is equal to 7 on pre tax bill.
Yeah that's so infuriating I don't think I'd leave anything and tell the management how rude and greedy those tips suggestions are
100% tip? I’m down for that. So, I’ll just pay the tip. Best comp my meal though, ‘cause I won’t be paying the bill.

The wash down my street same way: they didn't vacuum or air up the tires in my car- why would I tip an AIR COMPRESSOR
Don't tip it I worked at a car wash we didn't get s**t unless someone handed it to us directly
Another issue is that tipping in the US becomes expected even in the face of substandard service. In most parts of the world, tipping is an expression of appreciation for a job well done. It’s a way to reward servers and kitchen staff for their efforts.
However, if you’re tipping even when the food’s awful, the service is horrid, and you feel disrespected, you’re effectively rewarding the business for bad behavior. This way, there’s no incentive for the restaurant to improve or to conduct better training for its employees.

Where I am, Domino’s charges a higher price for delivery, a delivery fee (which doesn’t go to the driver) and still need to tip. In fact, most of the takeaway restaurants do and it works out costing the same or more are going out for a nicer, sit down meal. Our local Indian place started charging $25 a curry (not including rice and such…that’s an extra $8). So we make our own pizza and ‘take out’ food for those days when we need the convenience. It’s sad and I want to support local eateries but it just doesn’t make sense to :-/
You think that’s bad, now my city is slapping their own fees on meal delivery, so you get to pay the delivery fee, tip, service fee *and* city fee. Hell no to that! Delivery plus tip plus service fee is already a huge amount to pay for a meal delivery, and people will absolutely take that fee out of what they would have tipped the driver, who makes less than minimum wage thanks to this whole messed up system
This is actually correct, a delivery fee is not a tip. It's for insurance and gas
In other words, don't stiff the person whose car takes all the abuse.
I have NEVER had any food delivered to my house... My neighbour, however has had enough delivered to theirs to cover both our households. (There's a Chinese takeaway a two minute walk from mine that I have ordered and collected from).
Delivery fees cover the costs (vehicle maintenance, insurance, gasoline) of traveling to the diners. Where these fees end up depends how the restaurant handles this revenue. Tips for the delivery person, who are generally underpaid, go directly to them.
The ‘End Tipping’ project was first created in the early Autumn of 2015. In the following years, the community has grown to 14.7k members. The entire aim of the subreddit is to advocate for a different system in the United States so that restaurant and service industry professionals don’t have to rely so much on tips to make ends meet.

“In Order To Provide Our Team Livable Wages” Anyone Notice An Increase In Messaging That Makes Customers Feel Guilty For Not Tipping?
It's the company's job to provide their team with livable wages, not the customer's
Yeah lavender you clearly have never waited tables before because I assure you as a former server and one who owns a restaurant my servers absolutely want those tips. Give them a nickel. Tipping used to have a cultural response to tipping. If you wanted to tell your server they sucked, you could leave a coin, heads up from the table edge. It basically meant, I’m tipping you in the manner you deserve.
According to r/EndTipping, American tipping culture is toxic, frustrating, and quasi-compulsory. The community hopes that, in time, it will become something different: transparent, with up-front pricing. They hope that, eventually, the prices that Americans see on their menus are what they have to pay in total.

BETTER START CARYING CASH THEN because yall only get this screen when you pay with card.
Coffee Shop In Chicago Asking Us To Stop Being Poor
If you want your employees to stop being poor, pay them a normal wage. If you want us to stop being poor, stop asking for tips
If you want me to stop being poor, I can fix that by taking the money you apparently left in that jar for me.
What do you think about tipping culture in the United States, dear Pandas? How would you reform it if you could? If you live elsewhere, what’s the tipping culture like there? How much do you tend to tip? Do you always tip or do you only do so when the service is above average?
We’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Swing on by the comment section to share your thoughts!
Terry Black’s Doesn’t Let You Place A Pick-Up Order Without At Least A 10% Tip. What’s The Point Of Tipping If You Make It Mandatory?
It's not a tip at that point, isn't it? It's part of the price?
People need to start suing for false advertising if they're presented with a mandatory tip on checkout. You cannot attract customers to shop at your site due to your prices, then tack on a 10% surcharge at checkout.
Load More Replies...During the pandemic, you could order Texas Roadhouse online, and they would bring it out to your car. To support one of our favorite restaurants, we'd order about 2x/month and we'd tip generously. When restrictions lifted, they built a carryout window that you'd have to walk up to to get your food. I'd tip minimally, if at all, because all they were doing was putting my food in a bag. I don't tip at a drive-up window for the same service, why would I tip a walk-up? Then they started adding a gratuity to the bill. No more TX Roadhouse take out for us!
I wonder if that state has a sales tax. Adding money to the price without declaring it would be tax evasion.
These Options Are Getting Out Of Hand
OMG! Peeps in the UK tip only if we're delighted with the service (no % or mandatory)- but then, the UK has a min wage that isn't perfect, but decent (ish). We'd walk out & go eleswhere if gratuity payments were forced on us. minwage-65...c1dc34.jpg

In What Universe Would Anyone Give A 100% Tip?
If it says no tip as an option then just fricking hit no tip and be done with it, no need to get angry or be dramatic sheesh 🙄🙄
Look during in the Christmas season, I might tip 100% to a great server...but like... paying double for something random? Nahhhhh
This 400ml Bottle Of Wine In My Hotel Room, That I'd Have To Open Myself, Has An Automatic 15% Tip
Ok well instead of saying a gratuity is included, why not just increase the price by 15%? You'd literally be saying money for not having to print that hoopla
What are they saying it's THAT HARD for a housekeeper to stock that? When they pull it out of a wine closet? Or what is it hard for the owner to get it when a business can mass order wine/beer rather easier than any individual in the US? ( im a food service worker I'd know )
Again really bad taste. To put a wine bottle in a room and then expect a 15% gratuity is the height of tacky
Tipping A Search Engine??
Google doesn't want your money just ALL your personal information. MUCH more valuable.

Well At Least They’re Honest Now - T’s A Bribe
I've never used door dash. So they make you tip before you even place the order?!
Yeah. And they don't know if you'll tip in cash so they never take the chance. And even with a NICE LARGE TIP because you WANT IT FAST they can still muck it up/eat your food/never deliver/w.e. else. I stopped using them AND grubhub after 5 consecutive orders never being delivered in Pittsburgh. NEVER AGAIN.
Load More Replies...I’m a huge tipper on door dash, and you know what? My driver is waiting at the restaurant before the order is even ready. 100% worth it for me to get hot tasty food fast. I’m the one who doesn’t want to leave my comfy couch, and I pay for that luxury every once in a while.
My DoorDash experiences as well and I also have them deliver groceries...
Load More Replies...Yes. It is a bribe at places like DoorDash and UberEATS. If you don't tip enough to their liking, your food will likely be cold before it arrives. If at all. All the more reason to get it myself.
It's not a "bribe," it's literally what DoorDash is counting on--the customer paying the driver so they don't have to. DoorDash often defaults to $2 pay for each delivery. They count on the tips compensating for their cheap selves. Most dashers would make well below minimum wage if they accepted $2 per order. They are independent contractors, they are not obligated to take every order. If they don't want to lose money and essentially *pay* to deliver food (when you factor in gas and car wear and tear that could be what it amounts to), they have to "cherry pick" the orders with decent tips. Otherwise, they're better off staying at home and not wasting gas.
Load More Replies...I've never used DoorDash, but Instacart does this too - although they let you adjust the tip after the delivery. I usually stuck with 20%, bumped it up a few times for exceptional service (and that one time I panic-ordered baking supplies at 6 AM) and lowered it exactly once after the driver dropped off someone else's order and I had to contact the company help chat to get them to come back.
Doordash lets you adjust the tip after delivery as well.
Load More Replies...Door Dash will add money to the order pay the longer it sits in queue - that's what it means by "slower delivery." If you add the tip up front then your order will get picked up more quickly, otherwise you wait until the price is worth it to someone. You are absolutely bidding for service, which is what they should call it rather than a tip.
Exactly. They are paying a pittance to Dashers and seeing if anyone is stupid enough to spend 20 minutes and waste 10 miles of gas to deliver to a non-tipper's home. Most won't, so the food waits and waits until DoorDash decides to chip in more money to motivate someone to take the delivery. It's not a "bribe," it's more like hoping someone will work for pennies, and if nobody will, eventually offering them more.
Load More Replies...If this makes you uncomfortable, don't use Door dash. The driver has no idea if you're going to tip or not, and they don't want to do the work if they don't know they're going to get paid, obviously.
Seems like blackmail to me. If this was in Oz, the business would go broke.
Blackmail. Thank you, but no thank you. Telling me my food will be cold and days late is not a good way to get a tip.
Bakery - Asking For 22% Tip For Handing Over An Overpriced Loaf Of Bread
Went to a local bakery to support them. Their prices are already crazy ($7.49 for a loaf of bread).
The guy literally hands over a loaf of bread to me and expects me to tip?
People in front of me were ripping 22%. People behind me were staring what I would do
My Mom and I tip generously at local places, providing that they are not a******s with jerk servers. We do want to support local...to a point.
This is unrelated, but this story reminds me of something that would occasionally happen back when I worked on drive through at a fast food restaurant with devilish arches. We would sometimes get customers that would ask to pay for the car behind them, sometimes this would start a trend where people generously began all paying it forward (or backward, hah). It would usually only last from 3-5 cars max, but I never really understood the point. Sure it's sweet, but the first person paid for your food so you didn't have to pay anything and i could just hand you a receipt. Dunno why this made me think of that, but whatever. I'm just procrastinating rn anyway 😑
YOU DO YOU. Why would you care about the random strangers in line behind you? Do you think any of them really care or will remember this brief encounter with your backside?
They are looking for consensus to feel free enough not to tip.

Restaurant Tip Shames Public!
YOU do your servers this way. If you can’t afford to pay them adequately out of your current prices, put your prices up.
If their servers are so darn great, why the f**k don't they pay them a living wage?Generally, if one cannot afford to pay their employees, one should not run a business.
THEN YOU THE OWNER PAY THE REMAINING BALANCE PER US LABOR LAWS. Oh wait yall fire servers before you follow US labor laws. Don't let owners bully YOU the consumer. It's their responsibility to pay their employees.
Maybe your customers come from civilised societies, where people are paid living wages and tipping is optional...
I would ask you why your such a cheap a*s boss who does not want to pay the staff.
anyone outside the US just looks at all these comments and sees another good reason to not visit the US, aside from the poverty, guns, politics, racism..........

A "Super Tip"?
I hate how it used to be 15% now the minimum shown on most machines is 18%. You can always do the math and leave a custom tip! You do not have to use the preprogrammed options, unless you choose to
Also love how they put the smaller amount at the end to try to trick you into choosing one of the higher tips
Tourist Trap Or What?
20% open grat(uity) is standard for a large party, but that IS most certainly the gratuity. You can choose to leave more if the service was excellent or the group was a pain in the a*s.
What the hell is a service fee? Do I need to bring my own cutlery?
Went to a buffet with friends. There were four of us and we asked for separate checks. There was a 22% “service fee” included. Plus a line for tips!
Well obviously the gratuity was included because it's right there on the check but what is the service fee??
Pickup At Cookie Shop
I'd be happier to tip a person who did the baking rather than the worker that handed me the cookie!
Oooh this happened to me once at a tiny bakery where I was just picking up some cupcakes. I did leave a gratuity but it felt shady
Asking For Tips On Top Of 16% Service Fee
The thing that confuses me is - it appears the service fee is not the same as the tip so to get the tip to the staff I actually have to do both -correct? But what is the service fee actually for? Bill padding? Using a credit card? Walking through the door? We have one restaurant that says in advance there is a service fee for using a charge card of 2.5%, but they are upfront about it.
FYI, charging extra for card payments is explicitly forbidden in the European Union according to Directive 2015/2366 (Payment Service Directive II)
Load More Replies...That is an ODD service fee percentage. That looks more like a few fees added like credit card. CASH ONLY THEN.
It looks like it's just a flat $6 and the computer calculates what that is in percentage of the subtotal
Load More Replies...If ever there was a clue the service fee is just made up look at the percentage - 16.36875???
In Australia nowadays, banks have added a service fee to credit card purchases. So the shop keeper has become a collection agency for greater bank profits and passes it on to the customer. Exceptions ( at the moment ) are the big supermarket chains. So I pay with card at them but cash elsewhere.
Was Asked To Tip My Prescription Medicine Delivery Person…
Deliveries like these are different from servers because they're independent contractors. It's comparing apples to oranges.
And the "independent contractors" are therefore forbidden to set their prices and need to beg for money. Are you absolutely sure they are independent?
Load More Replies...It’s probably Door Dash. They are contracted to do prescription deliveries for certain pharmacies, and my experience with this has been terrible and unreliable service.
I have had great success with DoorDash deliveries of my prescriptions - more than a dozen times...
Load More Replies...If it's advertised as a " free delivery ", then why pay a tip ? The delivery person must be getting paid by someone. Usually it's worked into the cost of medicine.
I have an issue with companies paying such small fees, yes I do. So I refuse to make up for their greed. They're responsible for paying so little and you should put the blame where it belongs and not on SICK PEOPLE WHO ARE DEPENDING ON GETTING THEIR MEDICATION! How can you be so callous to support companies taking advantage of sick people! You monster!
Load More Replies...30% Tip. Absolutely Absurd
I've tipped 30% before, but it was a one off for stellar service. We had some bonus funds and decided to make someone's night. But generally we don't tip that much, 20% is the max we usually do, but generally 18% (we've done this since before the machines had it programed in or the receipts had the 18% option on them).
I too have tip 30% but like you said the service was exceptional! I own a restaurant and I think the tip should be anywhere between 18 and 20% but I also believe you better be getting that service, and if you're not you're absolutely welcome to tip less. But here's a tip, don't ever leave nothing if you've received bad service because the server might think you forgot, always make sure to leave a really bad tip so the server gets the message

QR Code For Tipping, 1 Night Hotel Stay
I always tip the cleaning people in a hotel. This is equivalent to the envelope with their names sometimes found in hotel rooms. This doesn't seem so bad.
It's the same issue as all of the other posts. Hotels need to pay their staff a living wage
Load More Replies...They don’t even clean the rooms everyday since the pandemic. Another way to hire less people. And now tipping.
Bloody outrageous ! Again, if their employer paid a decent wage, they wouldn't need tips. I've said it several times here on this subject : the public are being " suckered " into paying part of an employees wage, which allows the business to make more profit, usually on top of charging " top dollar " for an item or service.
You should always tip the people that clean your room, make your bed, clean the bathroom, bring you fresh towels replenish your mini bar come on people. I know the Tipping culture is got out of hand but this is absolutely a time when you should tip someone
I travel a lot. I always leave a tip for the cleaning staff. Generally $5.00 per day. However, Candlewood and Staybridge only clean the room once every seven days (and/or between guests) so, I do not tip "every day.
In France, when I was young, there used to be 10% "service" fee automatically added to every check in restaurants and bars, to pay the servers' wages. Then a law decided it had to be included in the prices, just as the taxes were in all retail places. There was much grumbling from the employers, as it would make their prices look higher, but now it's just normal. We still tip, but nothing like in the US. Just à few euros to show our appreciation of good service, and we know the server is paid a fair wage.
I remember a time when people just automatically tipped fairly for a lot of services. The gas station attendant who washed your windows and pumped your gas, and checked your fluids. The delivery person who brought your groceries to your door and often brought them in. The bag boy who helped you to your car and loaded it nicely for you. The paper boy who delivered. Then the world changed and a lot of the niceties went away and so did the concept of tipping people who did those things. There was no need for it. At that point we only tipped at restaurants, hair salons and maybe for help loading something in your car. The world changed again and now, everyone seems to want a tip. And that is dependent on the amount of your purchase. I get it at restaurants, bars and salons. I even get it for the delivery drivers for groceries and prepared food. What I don't get is that you're expected to give the tip before the service has been performed. Seriously,
It's unsettling how effective and easy corporate brainwashing is on the vast majority of Americans. Seriously your food prices have gotten to a point they're on par with other countries that pay a living wage already and 20% tips are expected on that as well?! Pay your workers a living wage! People shouldn't be expected to perform a circus act on top of their job just to keep a roof over their heads because of a broken tipping system. Rule of thumb, if a business can't afford to stay in business without underpaying its employees it shouldn't be running.
A local restaurant started adding an automatic 15% tip on their check. I paid it, but I let the server know I normally tip 20%.
It may sound like a paradox, but always tip big when you're getting something for free. A bed we owned for ten years had to be moved to another room for medical reasons. It needed to be taken apart with tools and drills to be moved. We asked the owner of the furniture store where we bought it to send out some men to do it for us. (We're old and suffer from back and stroke problems.) He agreed to send his men out but refused to take any money. (We had been customers for over thirty years, and he also was a former student of mine.) The guys came out and got tip of fifty bucks apiece for their 15 minutes of labor. Satisfaction for everyone.
If it's pickup at a counter (food or any other purchase) and they demanded a tip, they get nothing. And if it were prepared food, I'd walk so that they have unsold cooked food and no revenue at all. Pay. Your. Workers. And stop stealing from customers.
I picked up a pizza last week, the lowest tip % on the machine was 30%. I asked the girl who handed me the pizza who and what the tip was for. Response? Blank stare. No tip was left.
