Rio 2016 Olympic Venues Just 6 Months After The Olympics
1.7Mviews
Summer is over for Brazil’s ‘marvelous city’. In a series of eerie and depressing new photos released last week, the 2016 Summer Olympic venues in Rio de Janeiro are seen filthy and deserted just 6 months after the end of the games, including the legendary Maracana Stadium. In a city that hoped desperately to be lifted out of poverty and debt by making back the money they spent, these are the ruins of a shattered dream.
Rio 2016 was boiled in scandal before it had even began, including a Zika virus outbreak, reports of doping by Russian athletes, and the impeachment of president Dilma Rousseff due to corruption. The second largest city in Brazil is millions of dollars in debt with international creditors, and now also owes over 900 thousand dollars to a local energy company.
Murky pools, worn terrain, and vandalisation can be found all over the Olympic park. Seats have been torn from the once-iconic arena. The future of these shockingly neglected buildings remains uncertain, but they’re unlikely to be a high priority among Rio’s long list of coming challenges.

This, Beijin and Sotchi are very good examples why the olympic comitee need to review what qualifies a city for the Olympic games.. New installations should be forbiden and they should encourage investement in already existixing venues. There should be rules that will require cities and goverment to redistribute the goods and have a strong post-olympic plan for the use of the installations.. For example, Guiness World Record requires all food record attempts to have a plan to not waste teh food otherwise the record cannot be accepted.
New installations are required by the IOC with regards to safety standards. From the hosts perspective, these new installations are a good way to showcase prestige and architecture - it's not about sports but about showing off to the world for a few weeks
Showing off to the world is not worth being in debt for decades.....
Umm..I'm pretty sure the stadiums in Beijing are in good use and the Olympic park in Beijing became a famous local place for runners. So what's wrong with Beijing?
What's wrong with Beijing?
I've been saying this for years. For example, were DC to host (purely hypothetical, but I'm familiar with the area), there are dozens of colleges/universities with sports faciities within 50 miles (UVA, U of MD, Howard, Georgetown)... and the marathon could use the Marine Corps Marathon route (or another route that showcases the city). House athletes in dormitories (especially during the Summer Games when most dorms are closed). The Redskins/Senators/Ravens/Orioles parks are within 50 miles or so and Philly is just north of Baltimore. It would just make so much sense.
Well we all knew this was gonna happen. If you don't have a post plan for these venues, you are obviously going to be screwed. You MUST have a post Olympics plan!
The only plan that works is a pre-Olympics plan - and that plan is "Do not host the Olympics." It never does anything positive for the host city. The Olympics talk about equality and peace between peoples, but promotes human rights abuse to meet its insane standards. Hypocrites to the highest degree. Fuck the Olympics.
In Munich it actually turned out well. But I guess that's the odd one out.
Disagree. In the UK, the post Olympic venues of 2012 have been excellent resources to help train future stars, our performance at Rio (which was amazing for such a small country) would never have happened without all that investment in to sport 4 years (and longer) previously. People love to be negative about everything, that way you can only be 'surprised' or 'proven right'...but the sweeping statement of "it never does anything positive for the host" is simply wrong. Stop being a neysayer and start being part of the solution.
Maybe because its in America, but a lot of the same venues that were used in the 96 Olympics are still in use today for various public and private use.
It didn't go that bad for Barcelona though... Because instead of building new venues we almost reused everything and had real plans for these venues to convert into museums, sport centers or even theaters. the thing is, many countries feel the need to build everything from 0, and have no plans at all for the futur of these buildings. And that means creating debt and wast money.
Im sorry to burst your bubble, but we Germans usualy do very well with events of that size, and we hosted more than the Olympic games.
And all of that money they make, only to exploit the land and leave it impoverished. Shame on these people.
Olympics bring in alot of money to the host countries which is why they want to host it. Countries like the UK who have a post-olympic plan which further boost profit & can make good used of the facilities. Rio 2016 they had trouble making everything completed in time so they had to use cheaper easier to make products which also meant easier damaged. with they time frames and budgets etc they had they still managed to full off a good Olympics so people shouldnt be so negative
I remember they did have a post plan, but now I'm no longer sure whether I misunderstood something, confused my memories, or was it all just to make it look pretty....
The lack of sustainability of the great events of our time is terrifying.
