29 Professions That Attract The Worst Kinds Of People, As Shared Online
Interview With AuthorEvery workplace has gone through a questionable set of employees. Perhaps it's a case of "they are who they are," and they portray the same personality outside of their professional life, or maybe assets like power and money are to blame – who knows?
This netizen, however, took to Reddit and posed this question: "Which profession attracts the worst kinds of people?" The thread has garnered over 34K upvotes and almost 30K comments establishing what careers do, in fact, attract a greater number of jerks.

Unpopular opinion but nurses. There is a lot, A LOT, of toxic abusive high-school girl drama type behavior among nurses.
It's such an important job and about half the people doing it shouldn't be responsible for a yogurt, let alone a human being's life.
I've seen some s**t, man.
As someone who worked HR for a medical clinic, I can vouch for this. I never wanted to yell "Grow the F-up!" more than when I had 30+ nurses to deal with. It's insane.
This is because it is one of the "default" careers for women when they leave high school. There are some amazing nurses who really care about people and then there are those who never really applied themselves and put thought into what they would enjoy or be good at so went into a default, another is Teaching (I say this a mid-life teacher in training). Men tend to have mechanic or construction related trades. There can be some amazing ones but there are also a lot of mediocre ones too.
Load More Replies...Had another nurse tell me I was a s**t parent for leaving my preemie in the SCN because I had "other responsibilities" as she nodded towards my autistic 3 year old. Same nurse physically assaulted my arm with her knuckle because I was loving and gently stroking my preemie's head. "You like that!? No!? Then don't do it to your baby!" No warning, just rammed that knuckle inbetween my bicep muscles at full force. Tears formed in my eyes... It hurt me in every way, physically and mentally. I was scared she would retaliate against my baby if I said anything so I just bit my tongue. Every one else was nice at MN Children's but f**k that one nurse.
I hope you complained after your baby was discharged. Should not be around the vulnerable
Load More Replies...And they have to let everyone know they’re nurses on their license plates
Oh my gosh, yes! There's some overblown level of pride in nurses, I think. They're important, but their pride is to a level of scary, far too often.
Load More Replies...I went to nursing school and became a nurse. I worked as an RN for a couple years before it just clicked that I hated being a nurse. So much toxicity, and little time to actually care about patients. I switched to the veterinary field and love it more than I could've imagined. I keep my license up to date but have no plans to ever return to the field. The thought of going back to nursing makes me want to cry tbh.
The things I saw disgust me to this day. Terribly neglectful and abusive nurses, rude and unknowledgeable doctors, managers practicing favoritism and turning a blind eye to serious incidents and abuse, staffing shortages, lack of adequate on the job training, the list just goes on and on.
Load More Replies...My husband's ex, who is the biggest walking epitome of a manipulative, gaslighting, mentally abusive, narcissist, who has also stalked both of us and even our families, recently qualified as a psychiatric nurse. Kind of says it all!
I've met SOME kind nurses. Most really are the most unempathetic, inhumane, condescending people.
I've met some amazing nurses. I've had three surgeries and they were all great! My first male nurse saw I was absolutely freaking out (might've been my first anxiety attack tbh because I could breathe) and he gave me a little bear which made me feel a lot better. I don't remember my second surgery ngl but I did get a blanket from a charity from a nurse because it reminded her of the hoodie I brought with me. My last surgery I loved my anesthesiologist, he was so sweet and made sure I was okay while I was being pushed to the surgery room on the gurney. I'm doing a 5 day hospital stay so this opinion might change next month lol
Load More Replies...And you'd hope the the incompetent would fail out of the profession. Nope. My aunt is head of nursing for a nursing home. She should not be allowed elderly people at all, let alone be in charge of their care or a department dedicated to their care
Last I heard there was a nurse shortage. May explain why incompetent ones stick around.
Load More Replies...I know six nurses in my family. All but one are catty, crass, unemphatic, and a couple are downright ignorant of their own job. Four don't, "believe," in evolution. One thinks manipulating patients to make decisions based on her personal beliefs is ethical. The one person I think is truly a good person, and good at her job, was moved to a desk position just before the pandemic. This might be the next career in need of a "all cops" type movement.
Sounds like they reside at the peak of "Mt. Stupid" on the Dunning-Kruger graph. (Not calling names - it's what the peak is called.) Just enough knowledge to allow them to think they know it all, not enough knowledge for them to realize how little they've learned of what there is to know.
Load More Replies...I'm a non clinical worker for the NHS, I've had several managers in my time- mostly nurses. A couple have been the cruelest unemphatic people I've met.
Bored Panda was lucky to get through to the author of the thread, and we posed them a couple of questions.
First, we asked what inspired them to make the post: "I keep in touch with my college friends. Inevitably, some of our peers are brought up in conversation, and not all of them in a good way. Some of the latter were political science majors who seemed more concerned with basking in their proximity to power than anything else."
We then invited the author to answer their own question: "I don't have an objective answer to this. I can only speak to what tends to get into my head the most, personally. And the response above answers this question in not so many words. (I also disdain certain movie and TV directors who appeal to an audience's most shallow, nihilistic impulses for easy views, attention, and money.)"
Last but certainly not least, the OP added: "I'm an extremely flawed person. I'm judgmental, self-centered, and a touch petty. It's possible that had I the skill and drive, I would have done something in politics myself, because a part of me is attracted to power. The bottom line is that while I have opinions and a right to express them, I claim no absolute moral high ground. And I think that should be the same for everyone."
Politicians.
you mean a system where there is rampant opportunity for corruption and graft, where people kiss your behind to get government money for company or project, where you handle your own accountability and oversight, would attract the worst types of people? I am shocked, just shocked
I don't think it necessarily attracts the worst kind of people (although there are quite a few wastes of skin among the political class), but I think politics being a popularity contest rather than a referendum on competence and honesty is corrosive on the soul.
A politician is someone who can tell you to go to hell in a way that you will look forward to the trip
Law enforcement seems to have some problems
On the whole less than 1% of Law Enforcement Officers will ever have a problem of doing something bad or crossing the line. However that tiny group tends to commit a lot of problems (like the guy with Floyd's death, he had 17 excessive force and abuse complaints on his record before then), but DA's and Police Unions protect the bad ones, which allows them to flourish)
If you're a cop who knows a bad cop and you do nothing, you're a bad cop too.
Load More Replies...Just a little something to think about when someone says oh it's just a small minority of cops that are corrupt, criminals, scumbags, racist, murderers, etc... How many turds can you add to a punch bowl before it's no longer punch and is instead sewage? Would you be ok with one turd in the punch? Of course not. In case the moral of this allegory is unclear, the bad cops are the turds and the police force is the punch. It's crude, but it really makes you see things differently.
Well written. "Turds in a Punch Bowl". I feel a song coming on!
Load More Replies...I still remember the kind of push back police departments had when everyone was talking about making body cams standard. The problem seems so much worse than I expected.
I live in Memphis. That so called scorpion unit that murdered YES MURDERED Tyre Nichols has destroyed my faith in law enforcement forever.
In all fairness, every profession has its problem people, it's just that with law enforcement, problem people get innocent people killed. There needs to be a way to weed them out so only the good ones remain (there are lots of good ones).
But the "good ones" enable the bad ones. Correct me if I'm wrong on this, but I have never heard of a single instance of this supposed good majority taking a stand against corrupt, abusive cops. I've never heard a story where a single cop did something wrong and those around them immediately denounced them and did anything about it. The only times you hear of bad cops getting their comeuppance is when the issue is brought to light by the public. And then we always hear about the cops around them doing their best to cover it up. I could give example after example. All I ask is for a single example where the "good" cops do the right thing when dealing with bad cops, on their own, without being forced to by the public only after the stories come to light. I'm not a fan of clichés but "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" fits pretty well here.
Load More Replies...Coming from prison, I will say that the cops here have been far kinder than expected. They treat me like anybody else. My neighbors used to play very loud music every night until about five in the morning. I made a few complaints. The cops treated my complaints seriously, and my neighbors now either turn the music down or off at a reasonable hour. The cops could have harassed me, refused to take care of the problem, or ignored me completely. They didn't. I appreciated that.
The police officers who put on the uniform so they can pretend to be better than what they really are. They hide their true selves. I know this on a personal level. They hide their darkness behind the uniform.
"But it's only a few bad apples." Cry the apologists completely oblivious to the idiom they're referencing.
Not surprising at all. Most are d***s that were irrelevant in high school
Paparazzi
The problem lies in the demand for what they produce. If we weren't buying, they would have no incentive to keep perving up the landscape. Society is the addicted voyeur. They're just the enablers.
Exactly what I want to say. The paps aren't the bad ones,it's the public that feels they have the right to know what color panties someone is wearing and things that are none of their business.
Load More Replies...There’s doing your job and then there’s stalking. I firmly believe that much of a paparazzo’s work falls into the category of stalking nowadays.
If a rat married a skunk, their children would all be paparazzi
Paparazzi are responsible for Princess Di's death. This is the fear Prince Harry expresses repeating: running from Pzz's is will cause his accidental death .
Never understood why this was in any way legal or tolerated. It is stalking for profit, not reporting.
Yes lol that's where all those pictures of celebrities on magazines and stuff are from they'll stalk them and take unflattering pics and be like omg look at mila kuniz with no makeup! What a weird awful thing to do to people lol crazy...

I'm probably gonna get some hate for this... the military (The US Army to be precise). Probably 99% of the Soldiers are good, honest people. The nature of the job just simply attracts some sickos. The Army does what it can, but It takes a long time to kick someone out of the Army. Source: 6 years Active Duty
I was in the marines and most higher ups are sociopaths, got promoted by kissing the a$$ of the sociopaths, have questionable mental stability, negligible intelligence, and power trip like it’s heroin. I couldn’t believe my life was in the hands of these people.
German army here, had some of that sort as well in my days, however they got kept in check by good NCOs and even better higher command, so I had that going for me at least.
Load More Replies...A career where people are hard core trained to kill or defend without compunction, and afterwards the survivors are turned back into regular society where they are expected to act "normally" with absolutely no rehabilitation. I'll probably be down voted but I've seen too many damaged former personnel.
Out of the 13 kids in my family 10 have served in all 4 branches. 7 of those met their spouses that were also service members. My brother Patrick was in for 30 years and retired as a Colonel in the Air Force and my last sibling just got in his 20 years 6 months ago and was a MSgt in the Army. Out of my 25 niece's and nephews 10 are currently active duty. I've spent my life living next door to an Air Force Base, saying I come from a military family is putting it mildly. I've seen the effects that war has had on my family and I wouldn't wish it on anyone. My grandpa served in WW2 and he along with 2 of my nephews and 2 cousins that served in Iraq and Afghanistan and my Uncle that was in Vietnam ALL committed suicide. I have siblings that have severe PTSD because of the s**t that they saw and the things that they had to do. Don't get me wrong, I'm so damn proud of all of them, but at the same time I feel like the military has taken more than enough from my family.
Load More Replies...I remember reading there are four types who join the military: those for whom it's basically a family tradition, those who just need a decent job, the true bona fide patriots, and those who want to legally kill people. The last group is the smallest, but they definitely exist.
I'd suggest the last two groups have a lot of overlap.
Load More Replies...I feel like the American military is heavily glorified, from our media (like top gun and stuff) to our schools (like ROTC and the Marines booth that's in high school lunchrooms every so often). I'm guessing many people go into the military believing they're going to help people, when they're actually part of an industrial complex that hurts a lot of people, including veterans. I want to make it clear that I dislike the military system a lot, but I don't hate everyone who's part of it, veterans especially. They deserve so much better.
100%. They give it their all then let go with (as far as I know) little help transitioning into civilian life and managing PTSD.
Load More Replies...I knew people who literally joined the military thinking it meant a nice sign-on bonus, getting buff/attractive, and getting free college then got mad when they realized that war happens, hard work happens. They were in their 20s. Not BAD people, but I mean, come ON....
I went to boot camp with SEVERAL people who said they would not be deployed with their MOS (their job in the Army) because their recruiter told them that. They 100% believed they would not get deployed during wartime because their recruiters straight up lied to them and/or "promised" them things that were not true.
Load More Replies...And then become postal workers (additional points added to postal tests for ex-military)
As I said about the cops, TBH what sort of person do you think would voluntarily go into a job like that? (a) a person who likes telling others what to do, (b) a person who wants to be legally allowed to assault others, (c) a person who thinks that invading other countries to "improve" america's "security" meantime the only reason people hate america (really, if you doubt this, just ask someone in the middle east)... the only reason is that they invaded you in the first place. If yall minded your own business no-one would want to commit terror against you.
The executives that run MLMs.
WOOOOOOOOOOOSH MLMs have executives just like any other company.
Load More Replies...Maybe don't use acronyms? Since it isn't specified, I'll just guess that MLM stands for Minion's Lives Matter
Professional scammers are not the best of people. Who'd have thought. The profession of hitman also attracts bad people I think.

“Reality” TV
The man who brought back Trump to star in The Apprentice said he will never forgive himself. Before that, Trump was just another failed businessman who was receding into oblivion. After that people viewed him as a success and fell in love with his abusive style. And we all paid the price.
Where narcissistic people are paid to act like even more crazy rotten people.
Isn’t the fact that they are narcissistic or otherwise unstable the reason they become reality tv stars? It’s sure what keeps people watching
@Kristin: Yeah, there’s no show called “The Well-Adjusted, Intelligent Family That Loves and Respects Each Other.”
Load More Replies...I think this is kind of confusing cause and effect, here. It's more likely the producers just select the shittiest people because they're more interesting and dramatic, and will therefore generate more views. No such thing as bad publicity, etc.
Academia.
Intelligent people in very niche areas, with no consideration for the real world and social interaction, whilst simultaneously being told they are the best in the world at certain specific subject areas (which is true, but just not as many people care as academics think they do). You end up with an unnecessarily toxic environment of people trying to intellectually one up each other and throw anyone off the ladder on their way up.
It's a cruel, nasty, petty, and poisonous environment.
Yep. The absolute worst, those people will see you and talk to you like you're nothing because they believe they know so much and are touched by God. Ugh! I have a graduate degree. Had to deal with this bs from these fools who wouldn't make it outside academia
Or maybe these people talk to others like that because they believe they're talking to equally intelligent people?🤷♀️🤷♀️🤷♀️
Load More Replies...Seems to be more of a thing in the States. Having lived both there and in Denmark and been exposed to extremely supportive people from all over the European Astronomical community, my experience was definitely better in Denmark.
Same in The Netherlands, however it heavily depends on the university and the group. Where I work there's more support between and within groups, mostly because it's known that if it weren't for the technicians, nobody would get any s**t done.
Load More Replies...I once told a professor of mine (who constantly reminded everyone that he graduated from Harvard), that he wouldn't last a minute in the real world. I worked full-time and attended college full-time, so I felt I had a better understanding of the world outside of Academia. He came down from his high horse for a while following my statement, and gave me an A for the semester, so I suppose he took it well.
What makes you think academia is not the "real world"? I've worked in non-academia and academia, and academia is very much the real world.
Load More Replies...I was a faculty secretary for many years. They eat the office staff for breakfast. Many very nice but the mean ones push ur self esteem to a new low.
Worked at East Coast University for decades. Many academics have a difficult time making positive decisions. When they finally do, the decision often seems unrelated to reality, and is immutably engraved in stone !
I was very blessed that most of my teachers and professors were not like this. I vowed never to become like the ones who were, though, as well as following the example of my numerous teachers, professors, and other mentors over the years. I can think of a single person who actually liked the ones who were terrible to the students they didn’t like and that’s because she liked everyone and everyone liked her!
(replying because BP won't let me just post a normal comment?) This might depend on region, subject, and even school. I got a PhD in literature, and while there were some jerks among the faculty at one of the schools I was at (UDel), the faculty at the other one (Ohio U) were generally very nice. But the system itself was basically just a long course of hazing: they need to rethink what students should be asked to do to graduate.

My mum worked in a prison. She said that a lot of the men in there for sex offences against children had/were looking for jobs like driving ice cream vans, dressing as Santa at shopping centres etc as they liked kids sitting on their laps etc. Apparently it's way more common than people would think
Predators go where their prey is. If someone wants to prey on kids, they'll look for jobs that allow them access to (and authority over) kids
Why do you think in 2021-2022 school year the NYC School system had 11,000 complaints against teachers related to inappropriate or abusive contact with children in schools. Predators go to where they have easy access to victims
Load More Replies...The tragic part is that many of them succeed in getting those jobs because they weren't screened properly.
Or because there's no barrier to entry at all. There's not really a barrier for self employment
Load More Replies...This makes me sick. There is no rehabilitation for these people they will always be this way and should not have any opportunity to be around children.
Kids aren't allowed to sit on Santa's lap in the UK for this reason.
Also, if you want a job interacting or being around children in any capacity, you have to be dbs checked. If you go to prison for a sexual crime against children or adults, you go on the sex offenders register for a set period or life.

In my experience, it's not so much that Christians tend to be abusers, but that abusers tend to find religion to be a good camoflage

Human resources
Human resources, like natural resources, are to be exploited in corporate processes and the waste product disposed of as cheaply as possible.
Load More Replies...Some are there to support you. The majority that I've met are control freaks who think they're there to run the business and make better decisions about staff than managers.
It is in the company's best interest to run a stable ship.
Load More Replies...Has an HR professional, yes and no. We do protect the company from wrongful termination, discrimination, etc. But we also protect employees. We make sure managers don't fire or discipline people on a whim, we make sure policies are in place and followed so there is fairness as much as possible, we make sure you get benefits. A lot of people think of HR as the bad guys because the main interaction you have with us is for a negative situation but we do a lot of good things behind the scenes too! I advocate for my employees and make sure they get their full maternity leave and are considered for a promotion if they are the right person. I also discipline or terminate your coworkers who are taking advantage of the company and putting more work on you
I just moved from HR and I think it just depends on the culture of the company. The HR department I left operated with both the organization and the employees in mind. This is at a college btw.
Load More Replies...HR in my country are useful (SA). They protect workers' rights against management.
Maybe in the US, but not in my country. The HR people I have worked with in my life were mostly helpful or just doing their jobs. Also, I think people are being really naive if they think HR people are hired to "help people" of "keep people happy", HR people execute company policy, like literally everybody does who works for that company. And guess what, that policy isn't made up by HR, but by the SMT. Don't shoot the messenger. I work in IT and I had people telling me I should come to their house after work to fix their privately owned computer, because for some reason people think it's also my moral obligation to help people in need as an IT engineer. Just like HR we are just doing what we are being payed for, and 'helping people' or "keeping people happy" wasn't on our job description.
I quit my position when I realized management a wanted me to treat hard working people as though they were shite. It was a nice cushy paycheque I left behind.
Youth Pastor
Mine was fired for trying to turn our youth group into a cult. Perhaps it's a power trip thing.
Predators go where their prey is. Sad but true.
Load More Replies...I was having an argument with a man who had worked himself into a frenzy of hatred of drag queens. He kept saying "We have to protect the children," so I showed him some statistics: not a single drag queen arrested for sexually abusing a child. White, reactionary "youth pastors" and other religious figures of authority? A whole different story.
What's the difference between acne and a priest? Acne waits until ur 15 before coming on your face.
So my youth group leaders were really awesome. You have the bad in each group of people anywhere. Most churches are there to help you. Most youth groups are there to help kids. If anybody is leading kids and tries to steer them the wrong way or doesn't try to educate themselves about the proper way to go about things then yes they shouldn't be in that job. But there's a lot of Youth counselors out there that are really awesome
Until one day you need help with something and the only ones to help is the church. Sure some Churches or some people at church could be bad. You have bad people in every group. But a lot of churches are there to help you
Load More Replies...Why is this not #1? I've never seen any other profession so overrepresented among people charged with sexually abusing children.
Sorry, teachers in percentage and straight overwhelming numbers, are the highest. By a disgustingly huge amount.

Over and over and over.
Thinking it's safe to just shorten this entry to "Hollywood"
Load More Replies...The producer finds a guy with money and makes him executive producer then he hires a guy to do the producing and names him associate producer that guy hires his sister-in-laws nephew to do the grunt work. If the film is a success the producer collects the Oscar. He thinks the executive producer and his boyfriend and his wife and the Taylor he owes for the tux. If it's a failure the director never gets another job anywhere.
Investment banking. Not all of them are terrible but to be successful its benefical to be a complete c**t
They basically make their money by siphoning wealth away from those who do actual work. They're pretty much economic parasites, like landlords
I don't think all landlords are economic parasites. I'm sure there are terrible ones out there like in any business, but I for one kept my rents as low as I could, tried to be understanding about when tenants would be late with rent money, etc. But I lost my property eventually to tenants that wouldn't pay their rent (so I couldn't pay the mortgage) and would neglect and damage the home that I put so much into. I see why the landlords I had in my past charged more, were inflexible, and so forth... they aren't able to run a business on kindness. It's not economic parasites, it's just a business like any other for most. Again, there are exceptions and bad guys, but not all are.
Load More Replies...Well if it wasnt for them many business ideas wouldnt get off the ground, a lot may be a-holes, but they play an important role in moving idle money to productive investments to build the economy and create jobs
Nope. Start up investment is not done by investment bankers. It's private investment most of the time and direct investment otherwise. Investment bankers are predators and don't invest in startups. They even actively supress startups because the gain marge for big companies is bigger and the risk is lower. If it was on them to decide, no small business would ever take flight. Also they don't 'create jobs'. Economy creates jobs, investment banking eliminates jobs to suck more money out of circulation. Investment banking has only one goal: make the rich richer. They're the leeches of economy and the main reason for every single recession so far

I went looking for a stockbroker five years ago. I didn't find one. They're an extinct species, in my country anyway. You can only find "investment brokers" these days.
Stockbrokers are essentially legalized con men. Making money from someone else's money is a scam at it's finest
Any system that is build upon belief and crowd think will always be dominated by confidence men (aka con men).

Psychology. There are lots of great people in that field, but it also attracted the most manipulate and destructive a*****e I've ever known. He's a licensed therapist now, and I feel sorry for anyone who crosses his path.
Not bad people but I do think a lot of people start studying Psychology to try to get a handle on their own issues and are not always the most stable. I suppose the best ones figure their own sh*t out and are then able to help others
Psych 101 was a required humanity class for my degree…loved it but my God the people in it to become actual doctors :|
Load More Replies...All therapists and psychologists are governed by a state board. If you have concerns about the conduct of a professional, report it. Unfortunately, this can be true for some providers and I encourage people who have had bad experiences to report to the licensing board because the rest of us in the field don't want them out there in positions of trust.
Only if you live in the US. Please remember the rest of the world exists.

That's why we always rule out medical first! What a rookie!
Load More Replies...I have been suffering with mental health issues since childhood and have seen multiple therapists in my adult years. I hid it the best I could as a kid, because of the stigma. None offered any real help. A few years back I tried again. I went to a "therapist" who proceeded to tell met that she couldn't help me and that it was going to take years to "fix" me. Her actual words. She then proceeded to tell me that she would pass me off to someone else. I shook my head, shocked at this. And as a parting shot of laziness, she said, but in the meantime. I can start giving you this drug and that drug. I told her look lady, if I wanted to medicate I can do that with weed. At least the damn side effects wouldn't blow my kidneys out of my body, or who the hell knows what else.I told her, I came here for you to climb up into the attic of my head and help me clean out the junk and cobwebs. Not to drug me up and pass me off to someone else. I haven't been back to one since.
I feel bad because people who get wounded by bad counselors many times give up and never get the help they need
My son-in-law has a Masters in Psychology and he is one of the most hateful, evil piece of 💩that I have ever met. My therapist said this is true of a lot of people in the mental health field.
After only one semester of psychology, I could see that half of what they told us was obvious, and the other half was wrong. After spring a child with emotional issues, it became obvious the the discipline attracts people with zero intuition about human behavior trying to learn it from a book.
Imo I feel you can't tell anyone about anything in their life unless you have had hands on experience, ex you can't teach me how to be a good mom if you haven't been around kids or like them for that matter... You wouldn't trust a surgeon that just read a book on how to transplant a organ would you?
That's exactly why a mom would go to a child psychologist instead of just a psychologist or a counselor. Specializations exist!

Police
Absolutely not true. There are black sheep in every profession, but police are not shady figures in general.
If you yourself have not committed criminal acts, but are protecting someone who has, then you're a criminal too. That's how it works for civilians, and that's how it should work for cops. And politicians. If taxpayers are paying your salary, then you are held to a higher standard. Or should be.

I have never once met a kind or helpful cop, even when I've asked for help--they have all been the meanest, cockiest, most toxically masculine a******s (even the female-presenting ones). Not one good apple, and I've known or met several.
It's a shame that because I'm a minority, I am afraid of cops and had to teach my son how to avoid getting beaten or killed if a cop stopped him. I know some very good cops but I'm still scared.
My daughter is queer and her entire friend group are queer, some of them also trans and most are neurodivergent. When she went to visit the US in November, in addition to none of the out of towners going anywhere alone, they all got a list of rules to ensure they stayed safe if they had to interact with the police. Their race (all are white or lighter skinned) was the only thing they felt safe about.

Sales, estate agents, recruiters
I had many jobs and the recruiters have been nice and hardworking people.
I’m actually really friendly with a few recruiters and we’ve been building my career. But of course there are some skeazy ones out there
Load More Replies...I don't know how are estate agents in the world, but in my neigborhoud they went sick. The area became really attractive since we arrived there 4 years ago (not saying we made thé area attractive 😋). I have flyers in my lettre box every day from them. Do I want an estimation ? Do I want to sell? They have clients that want our house can we discuss a price ? We have a "stop pub" sticker on the box but it keep coming. They know one of the neigboor die? The have an offert for the widow the next day. An old woman in our street is sick and spend a few days at the hospital, they "casualy" asked questions like " is she going to Come black? Maybe she should sell thé house and go to a retirement home? Do you have the phone number of her kids?" They make everyone sick and they are going to end up being beat up by an angry grand ma pretty soon.
There are many fine sales professionals, recruiters and estate agents that really add value. The problem is that the good ones don't attract much attention, because when they do their job well, they're barely noticed. When you have a sh$thead that ruins a bunch of people, we'll he is memorable.
For recruiters, their #1priority is who is paying them, which makes total sense. In my experience, being the job seeker, I usually get ignored because I'm not willing to move house, commute long distances, or take super low pay. I rarely get offers until I reach out to previous coworkers and managers
I don't really think these people are psychotic. Of course I've met some people that are very shiesty. But most people in those professions are okay. I mean I wouldn't put Recruiters in that mix though. I feel like sometimes recruiter should be way more honest about the pros and cons about things so they get the proper people
Substance abuse mental health professionals seem to fall into one of the following categories: a) wonderful, angelic and highly competent souls who truly want to help drug addicts/alcoholics (they're maybe 20% of the counselors, optimistically); b) burnt-out incompetent/lazy/don't-care types (another 60%); or c) absolute personality-disordered, narcissistic/ Machiavellian sadistic types who really get off on the enormous power/control they have over the lives and fates of the people under their care (maybe another 20%). YMMV. The last group can do a LOT of damage.
Actually... Idk I disagree with this one! I'm in recovery and have worked with many, many substance abuse counselors and professionals and I can truly, honestly say I've never had the misfortune of meeting a bad one they have all been super kind and helpful and just amazing. They saved my life I have nothing bad to say about any of the ones I've worked with ❤️ that's a good thing right?! Most or a lot of them are also recovering addicts so it's possible that is the reason for my good experience. Actually I've had a lot of terrible experiences at hospitals like emergency rooms and stuff and once the ambulance people were really mean and scary to me.
My first doctor was horrible, like, she created SO many more problems with me! Because her 'treatment plan' was based off of things she enjoys doing- not bc she was an addict, just normal things. She forced me to journal (i know journaling is great for some, but not all and def not me, especially not when I'm forced!) and then would make me bring in my 'journal' every week and read it. The first few months I really truly tried my best- she literally said things like, my best wasn't good enough, or this was just my lot in life. I eventually stopped trying because it created a whole anxiety problem and high BP I never had before! I started just writing things i heard in songs, TV, or just naming furniture- and then it was all good! I learned the more random it was the more maybe she thought I was 'getting deep'?? She also said once that nazis at least had initiative... I gained so much weight with her, this is *just* the tip of the iceberg! I was with her for 3 years before I left
Load More Replies...I'd have to say the ones operating with only a clinical understanding of recovery from substance use disorders without having the lived experience of being a recovered addict or alcoholic themselves are the only ones with the potential for being control-oriented a******s.
Idk... I'm a therapist, and my Psy classmates in both universities I attended were mostly nice people, especially when I was specializing in therapy, but also during other training and seminars I attended. I've met a lot of therapists. There were a few annoying ones, sure (but definitely not bad), maybe a couple lazy/burnt out ones, and a person I hated (she was a little power-trippy, but I wouldn't go as far as calling her machiavellian or sadistic). But every profession has exceptions, I'm sure just like not everyone is equally competent in each profession. But the vast majority of psychologists and psychotherapists that I met are people who truly, genuinely care and want to help. That said, I'm sorry you had bad experiences with our lot, but please know there are really nice people out there too.
Elementary School Front Desk Administrator.
Front desk Administrators? Never heard them called that. Office staff yeah. Mostly no degree moms. Scary when they have to fill in for the nurse. One was signing in new students and told a cute little boy from Africa that we would not call him by his real name but told everyone his name was AB. As in A then the letter B. Not Abe or anything close to it. His name was not common but easy to pronounce she just didn't want to bother. And it started with A but had no B in it anywhere. I was furious. At another school they changed Tonga children's names. I had to ask them how their mom says their name. Dang!! What is wrong with these people. Respect for world cultures is in our state standards but if it isn't enforced there you go. Human Resources people in schools districts are really messed up too. From what I found. Deny teachers what they are untitled to affecting salary and tenure.
It's because they are tired of dealing with dumba** parents all the time!
Ok? That's not an excuse. When my brother was a first grader one of the ladies in the office mixed up my brother's water bottle with another kid's (they decided they didn't "need" to put sticky notes with names on the water bottles but they did). He drank from it and found it nasty so didn't touch it. He could've been allergic to it or who knows what. Just because they deal with stupid people from time to time doesn't mean they can go around being incompetent or just plain disrespectful (yes they do that).
Load More Replies...Every school secretary I've ever met has always been a very nasty character
Because they hate kids and the people who have kids.
Load More Replies...My mom is one and in this instance it's not true. She was enforcing rules put in place to protect kids. Maybe there are "black sheep" but there are also exceptions.
Of course there are! My mom had a job like this too, at a school for special education. She was a kind person, good at her work and she genuinely loved children. She was very much appreciated by the children and teachers alike.

I thought I wanted to be an architect… but then I met a bunch of architects. And architecture students. And architecture professors. And they were pretty much all A******s. It was weird. I mean… how could it be so consistent? But there ya have it.
George Costanza wanted to be an architect, so it sounds like he would have fitted in just fine
I can tell you that many architects are ignorant pretentious people who don't know how to do their job but are extremely touchy. Then there are the brilliant exceptions, but they are few. And I speak from experience.
Load More Replies...I just don't have respect for them intellectually, at least not to the heights they think they deserve. Working in construction, I've had architects ask me to do some of the stupidest and most dangerous things I've ever heard. The adage is true; architects are engineers who can't math
Unless they're certified architectural engineers. But architects are artists, and engineers are meant to get it become reality. Still, I don't disagree there's a bit of a disconnect.
Load More Replies...Specifically the architects who design or who want to win design awards, as compared to the architects that actually want to build buildings that are functional for the people who will use them. If that, then yes. Had a drunk, egotistical Architect as a professor once - if he showed up, he was late, drunk, and our projects were always something that would benefit him or his career outside of the university.
Landscape Architect here, I don’t recognise any of this. I work with architects and engineers and get on with all of them. I’ve met some proper bastards, but that could be said of any profession. Architects complain about contractors, contractors complain about architects
Oh my God yes! I tried architectural engineering for a little over a year, and then bailed. It's SO toxic. Absolutely insular, sexist, racist, manipulative, so many overblown egos. way too many people trying to exploit others for profit. Too many prefer profit over safely. Awful. I hated it. It's a shame because I had a good time in my CAD courses. I left engineering for chemistry... Which that's a whole different level of bizarre if I'm honest. But I like it more.
As a woman who is an architect, I can attest to the obnoxious, toxic, sexist and narcissistic environment.
Goodness! My husband of 27 years is an architect. Most of the folks he works with are the usual cross-section of humanity, but nothing like what you wrote about. Maybe it was the culture at the program you were enrolled in? Because I am not an architect, or in any of the building trades, and I can say that what you're describing doesn't reflect what I have have observed over my husband's shoulder for a quarter century now.
For some reason this makes me think of Bryan Cranston's role on "How I Met Your Mother".
As a structural engineer I 100% agree with this!! Pretty much at least once a day, often times more, I have an urge to smack an architect upside the head! No we can't design a house with giant glass walls with just wood framing! Yes, I am sure! I'm sorry, but physics trumps budget/your wants. I'm sorry for trying to figure out how to get your crazy design to stand up, and I'm sorry it's outside your budget, maybe you should simplify your design!
Sales.
Ironically i am also getting into sales 🙄
Depends on the sales by extension: marketing. There’s some truly amazing people in that industry but also some genuinely scary psychopaths
Especially in market research. I'm ashamed to admit I spent years in that industry. It's 80% b******t.
Load More Replies...I've tried my hand at sales. Turns out I care too much so that was a bust.
Selling things people don't want to people who can't afford them and then selling them an extended warranty.
I can see maybe like a pathological liar in some areas. But usually people in sales aren't too bad. They don't want to go out and sadistically hurt you. I wouldn't say they really attract the weirdos. I'm not saying there's some people out there that's in sales that aren't nuts. Trust me there are. But for the most part they're pretty okay
I spent over a decade in sales. Most people are peachy- people who are good with people and use that to make a living. But some. Some are manipulators and narcissists who get a rush out of fleecing people and LIVE for those top numbers. 100% could not stand those AHs
Ok so not really a profession but… there is a certain subset of musicians who are also wannabe influencers… particular people who are very on twitter. so back-stabby and clout hungry
I think the 'profession' here should just be labeled as a "public performer" or "influencer." As a musician myself, I have certainly met these kind of terrible people, but most every musician I come to know are great people. Sure, there's a little bit of cockiness buried in most people, but if you look at the general public performer/influencer, it's largely filled with narcissists, especially if you go into social media type stuff, or certain kinds of performance. Simply by the concept of the profession, it's just a lot of people who want publicity and power, and little work to go into it. Musicians really just want to write and play music, and play live shows, simply because it's fun.

Yes, people do not understand the desperation of those poor souls. In Siberia, you have to learn how to use a gun in school to fight off wildlife. I met a woman from Kramatorsk I believe, and she had never seen a porcelain toilet until she came to the u.s.

Tow truck drivers. At least 80% of all the tow truck drivers I've met have been felons, and about 98% have been shady d**kheads.
Maybe I've just been lucky, but every tow truck driver I've interacted with has been extremely kind. One pulled me out a snow bank and refused payment, another drove me several miles looking for an open motel (before smart phones).
I agree with PunnyPanda. I have been towed more times than I'd like, and the drivers have all been polite and competent. Most were friendly and made me feel comfortable, even when I was alone. I never got shady vibes from them.
Load More Replies...just because someone has a felony doesn't mean they're a bad person. it's unbelievable how easy you can end up with a felony, you don't even have to commit the crime,it almost happened to me but I was able to hire a good attorney just imagine if I had to rely on a public defender that just got my case that morning!
Can't upvote this enough. And how are they supposed to get by without a job? Tow truck drivers get attacked and shot at, they do repossessions too. That's not something you can hire a temp to do.
Load More Replies...If the labor force held a “day without ex-cons” strike, a lot of people would be surprised by the difficulty level for the average person.
That's so wrong to judge people as bad just because they are a felon. It's awful that people just automatically assume this because of a past mistake let people move on from their past and live normal lives if that's what they are trying to do quit throwing the past in their faces dammit.
What exactly do you keep doing that you need a tow truck driver so consistently that you can make this kind of assessment?
I've only had to deal with one tow truck driver and he was a very nice elderly man doing towing as a part time job instead of full retirement
My ex was/is a tow truck driver. I met others. It really depends. Some were a******s. Some would steal stuff out of cars. Some had no consideration of other drivers on the road if they were given an impossible time frame to get from one end of the city to the other. Some would go the extra mile and make sure you and your car are taken care of. Others, like my ex, could be all of the above. One thing that's a commonality among them is they're quite vulgar. Women would be safer calling a cab home than getting a ride back home in the tow truck. Watch how you treat them at their job. Some of these companies are run by motorcycle gang members. If you're chill and nice to them, they'll treat you like gold. It's a super dangerous job and they take it highly seriously. All have at least 2 stories of themselves and/or their work buddies nearly getting killed. It's highly likely they will have known someone who has been killed on the job.
My grandpa created a tow truck company that ended up having multiple locations in cities in the area and hiring required a background check and a clean u.a.. I assumed that was standard till I started hearing horror stories online about orher people's experiences
A UK police page on Facebook had a post where they'd arrested a driver. Phoned his mate with a flatbed to collect his car. Mate turned up whose licence didn't cover driving flatbeds so no insurance either so he was arrested. Phoned a colleague to collect the flatbed and the car and he too didn't have a suitable licence.
Had an accident last weekend, both cars totaled. (911: please move your vehicles to the side of the road. Me: No can do, sorry.) Tow truck driver was very nice. This is where your vehicle will be impounded. You need a ride home? Sorry, cannot by law. Driver of my vehicle was going to the hospital via ambulance. They couldn't take me. Didn't expect police or fire truck to take me. Yeah, it was not a pretty sight, our accident. Tow truck driver was kind enough to stay until sure I did have a ride home. Fortunately a bystander was able to take me home. Have never had a d**khead tow truck driver respond to any time I needed a tow.
Modelling photographers
I was a working model decades ago, so I can't speak for today, but I can't imagine it's changed much. Many fake their portfolio and are actually bad photographers, they hit on you, touch you inappropriately and put you in bad situations. They steal your image and sell it. Hide cameras behind mirrors. Talk s**t about you if you don't do what they want. Verbal abuse...it goes on and on. It attracts predators and narcissists, but many are wonderfully talented and great ones to work with. You are in so many new situations in that business you never really know who you're working with.
Load More Replies...The modelling photographer I met was the nicest photographer. The most jerkiest ones are the Walmart/Sears portrait photographers. Every time we go for family portraits the photographer speaks to me like I'm an imbicile, snaps at me for blinking (my eyes are very sensitive to light) and one time a couple of them at the Walmart studios argued in front of me who was going to do our portraits while giving me dirty looks. School photographers, too. What's up with them?
When I worked as a model in high school overheard an overweight photographer telling the skinniest girl of all of us to “suck it in” making her look like a literal walking skeleton with ribs protruding… no wonder so many models have eating disorders. Upvote for this one…
Contracts and agents are very important. Or just go the easy way and be an "Instagram model", lol.
This is actually my business (I’m a photographer’s agent) and the term “modeling photographer” literally doesn’t exist.
Maybe not in your English but it obviously does in someone else's English. It seems to express the OP's intention well enough.
Load More Replies...Why the photographer and not the client who hired the photographer? The photographer is just doing what they're paid to do.
Insofar as psychopaths tend to be dangerous kinds of people, heres a [list of the professions that seem to attract a disproportionate number of psychopaths]:
* Civil servant
* Chef
* Clergy
* Police
* Journalist
* Surgeon
* Salesperson
* Media
* Lawyer
* CEO
Personally, I'd go with sales because there's simply a lot more salespeople than CEOs or police, so it's a lot more likely that you're going to encounter a terrible person who's in sales. My anecdotal experience would also tend to confirm this.
Prisons are full of unsuccessful psychopaths, c-suites are full of successful psychopaths.
The list of psychopaths should include people who compile lists of OTHER psychopaths.
Again I'm not so sure this is true either... Just because someone is a psychopath doesn't always mean they are a terrible or violent person. Just that a lot of violent terrible people happen to be psychopaths
I'm a chef, so idk why you would say my profession. I mean, it's totally acceptable to throw knives from on side of the kitchen to the other! Right? J/K. Yeah, ive known a few psychos!
Why do you have Chef on there? I have a degree for pastry chef and honestly unless you really cross a line to p**s me off you're pretty good. It takes a lot to p**s me off. I how higher patients than most people. I'm Italian on top of that. Do we get aggravated if we're working on a food project and it's going nuts, sure. But does that make us psychotic? No. For you to put Chef on there you must be a very sensitive and soft person.

Bouncers. I swear those people are always looking to create trouble so they can exercise their right to kick a*s
This has not been my experience. Most bouncers I know are big teddy bears who are actually really nice chill guys that have the job because they look so intimidating that people rarely try to fight them. Their job is to stop trouble before it starts just by their presence.
This! Bouncers are there to keep us safe. Be nice to them. Say hi, say good-night, thank them. Or at the very least don’t be a jerk and fight them.
Load More Replies...+1 on Bouncers being great ... I've found that at "worst" they seem cold and professional, but most of the bouncers I've interacted with have been very friendly and kind ... I feel like they tend to reflect one's own intent - if you're there to have a respectful good time (and/or are part of a marginalized community) they're gonna look out for you ... But if you're looking to be trouble, they'll pick up on that and let you know they've got their eye on you
I think this is the self-own. Never once had a problem with a bouncer or seen them putting hands on. Be respectful and behave yourself and you won't have a problem.
When very young, long years ago, I worked in bars as a waitress. I was glad more than once for the bouncer. Saved me from some nasty characters.
They just like to bounce. They go home and watch Roadhouse while fondling themselves.
Line cook. A lot of them are great people, but every beyond horrible person I've met has always been a cook
Some of my favorite people are line cooks. The worst people I've met are in jobs related to finance, insurance, and banking.
After 14 years as a server, I've always been in awe of the dedication and hard work of the BOH staff. But, often they had very little patience with lazy, entitled servers. If you have found them to be a******s, you probably need to look inside yourself.
Gotta disagree with this one. I've worked in kitchens my whole life. Sure, we get a few oddballs, and some have shady pasts, but they weren't bad people.
My father was a cook in the navy for 20 years and a Pearl Harbor survivor. No complaints from anyone.
Strongly disagree with this one. I've spent many years working various positions in the restaurant industry, and in general restaurants attract the kind of people I prefer to work with. My guess is that OP was a server who was out to maximize their tips without regard for the people making the food, and that created their bad experience
I have noticed that male line Cooks can be moody. Moody doesn't make you a psychopath. They just need to work on personal development.
I dunno my buddy was a landlord, but he quit because people trashed his houses and many times didn't pay rent, staying through the whole eviction process. He was really good to the tenants too... but they took advantage of him.

Insurance sales people. They act uppity, entitled and have power trips. If you're and honest person, they will eat you alive and abuse you. They fired me unlawfully for pregnancy complications. Then they had the gall to try and collect premium payments from me. I threatened a lawsuit for wrongful termination after months of verbal abuse if they didn't drop the collection. They left me alone and I kept my word on not pursuing it further. I just wanted to be left alone and forget I ever worked for their internationally well-known supplemental insurance company.
