Pharmacist Student Shows MLM Supplements Are ‘Harmful Garbage’ With Real-Life Example
Millions of people all over the world are sucked in by the allure of multilevel marketing, or MLMs, usually on the promise of flexible hours, easy money and the recommendation of a close friend or family member that has also gotten in on the scheme.
But like in anything in life that seems too good to be true, it almost always is. MLMs are essentially rebranded pyramid schemes, that rely not on the quality of the product, but on convincing as many people as possible to get ‘under’ you. This seedy race to the bottom that has destroyed countless relationships, and is a predatory scheme built on false promises and ultimately, disappointment.
This pharmacy student doesn’t like MLMs either. Not only do they empty your wallet, but some of the schemes are actively harmful for your health too. Shakes, supplements and diet pills are big business in MLM circles, with many promising cures for all kinds of ailments you never knew existed. With people quaffing these questionable products full of ‘herbal extracts’ by the gallon, pharmacists have to work overtime to find out how these ‘natural’ chemicals affect the medications they need to prescribe for your very real, and often self-inflicted illnesses.
Scroll down below to read her insightful rant below, and let us know what you think about MLMs and alternative health in the comments. This girl, who is a pharmacy student, shared something recently that she thinks everyone needs to know
People mostly agreed with her point of view, while sharing similar stories of their own
I have type 2 diabetic and hypertension, and I learned not to tell anyone about them because sure as heck they would immediately tell me to 'trash the prescribed meds' I was given because 'they're toxic in the long run'. instead, they would tell me to get some veggies or some leaf of some plant, boil or pureed them, and drink them instead. I have run out of polite way to say no to their ~ natural remedies ~ b******t with no actual scientific research about them. I trust modern medicines and healthy lifestyle more than their zero knowledge about the topic. EDIT: so some of you thought the ppl around me was suggesting veganism, but actually I meant homemade natural remedies that has no proof of doing any good. veganism is still pretty unheard of where I'm from aside from the ones tied to religion such as Hindiusm and Buddhism

At the hospital met a new doc that discover I never did tonsillitis. I was allergic to my feather pillow and to the Christmas tree. (Yep my only allergies are feathers and resinous trees, go on, laugh). Cod oil, trees, feathers, all natural. Natural is great but not everything in nature, not for everyone, and not all proportions. Nature do not mean safe.
Although anecdotal, this is a great story about how people fail. Great you found a clever doc at last!

Natural ingredients not necessarily are healthy (maby poisons are perfectly natural). Seemingly harmless stuff like homoeopathics and ayurveda stuff can be dangerous when not produced to the same safety standards as medicine. Brutal, yet simply. Eat healthy and take medicine and supplements only if really needed.
I disagree. I had a stroke 2 years ago, and while I take all my "supplements" in food form, I have lost a great deal of weight, gotten rid of a persistent candida infection, my hair & nails are growing faster than they ever have, my blood pressure is down and I have no aches & pains. I feel better at 55 than in my 30's. That being said, there is a lot of nasty stuff out that in homeopath land, and I research everything I take extensively before using it. There are a lot of natural supplements out there that the drug companies "copy" so they can charge for it. And there are plenty of legal & even over-the-counter meds that can do great damage - my niece overdosed on Tylenol & almost had to have a liver transplant. Many blood pressure meds have side effects that are worse than the high blood pressure, especially when they keep lowering the numbers that are considered "high." Neither doctors, nor pharmaceuticals nor homeophathic substances can keep you safe without you informing yourself.

On the other hand, I checked with my doctor and the pharmacy before getting on the tea. My point is: sometimes there are natural herbs that actually can be a good idea. But you need to check them out with something more substance then Google. Talk to an expert that can crosscheck for potential problems. Restless Leg is mostly caused by low blood oxygen. I never believed it until I had a sleep study for something else. Once I was on oxygen and C-pap, I was able to sleep at long last. I have talked with many doctors about it. Supplements and creams are just band aids on a bruise. It makes you feel like something is being done, but it can't help the situation.

That is why it is always important to mention any supplements whan asked what medications you are taking. Dont just think - it doesnt count because you bought it from a Health Food shop.
Also the medical marijuana lobbyists are spreading plenty of false information how powerful and 'natural' cannabis is. It is true that CBD can help with pain and it has plenty of other positive health benefits. But lying that you can stop using plenty of medications and replacing it with just cannabis is bad. For example too many people have been brainwashed to believe that cannabis is the only thing that cures cancer and chemotherapy is just a 'big pharma fraud'. A classmate of mine is living of vitamin supplements. She barely eats, and if, then she eats salads, ans drink smoothies. I only take a few vitamin supplements because of my severe allergy for a lot of fresh veg (yup it's a thing). A lot of well meaning but misguided people have often advised me to try natural remedies for my condition and not even realise that even small amounts their "cure" would make me very, very ill. Years ago I tried some kind of "natural relaxing oil capsule" in the bath a colleague kept insisting I try to clear my sinuses I almost ended up in the ER because it felt like my lungs were shrivelling up into raisin! I actually couldn't even speak, only croak.
there are only two supplements I use reasonably(we check fully how much is recommended to use and buy ones with safe amounts), the first is Chamomile to help with the anxiety that comes with Aspergers and helps with sleep(tried different sleep supplements but they either stopped after a while of use, though they were only used when really sick and had sleep issues, or they would cause too much drowsiness), the second being Boswellia to help with a connective tissue disorder. Basically, natural supplements are fine as long as you do your research and actually need them.
Some people are uneducated about side effects.Everything has side effects for some of us.

It's very easy to take far too much of a particular natural ingredient in if you are taking a number of different supplements with multiple ingredients and not reading the label. Dont just think - these 3 products all claim to help "X" problem - so if I take all 3 they will be three times as beneficial. Some things can build up to a toxic level eventually.
I'm not sure I know of any of these MLM supplements, can anyone give me some names? Like, are those testosterone drugs they advertise this sort of thing?
I agree with the pharm student. Turmeric is best used as a spice, not a supplement. Especially if it causes, increased bleeding! That can be even more dangerous if someone is taking a blood thinner, as it says nowhere to avoid turmeric while taking them, or, on the turmeric bottle that it may cause increased bleeding or seepage, and to stop taking it before a surgery, or don’t take it on blood thinners! It’s also “praised” as a supplement to help with type 2 diabetes.. well, it’s not needed.. stay away from dangerous natural supplements if you don’t know how They Work!
I can see how people get sucked in. I found out the very hardest of ways of my allergy to NSAIDs. Things like Motrin try to kill me. So of course doing research, I stumble onto ways to alleviate pain and swelling when I have that issue and tada! It runs you right into that turmeric thing. I dont care for turmeric at all, so I just deal with pain with Tylenol. yay.
I think some herbs and supplements actually do heal and work for people. But when they interact with a medicine then that's cause for concern. I mean even some over the counter medicines could kill you or react badly.
depends on what you mean by 'heal'. and 'work'. if chamomile tinctures works for you, as a sleep-aid, by all means. on the other hand, a chamomile tincture is unlikely to cure cancer, cure diabetes of any variety, or cause any increase in the healing process of a laceration. there is no such thing as a panacea, and one of the reason they're called 'supplements' and not 'medications' is because they haven't been demonstrated as effective. can you source certain medications from natural sources? most certainly, but I doubt it's going to be any more convenient or effective than a proper preparation.
