I have so many photos of me doing this XD And I (weirdly) have photos of me holding up my treasured X-Men possessions - not on a Christmas, just random photoshoot of my X-Men poster, my most treasured X-Men comics, my Sega Genesis X-Men game, and my beloved shirt that had Gambit and Wolverine on it XD I can only imagine what my dad was thinking when his 11-year-old daughter demanded he take dramatic photos of her with her comic-book-character items XD
Does Anybody Remember The "Smell" Of Old Crt Television Screens?
It was a unique perfume. I can't put it into words, it smelled...well...like electricity, I guess. Not ozone, not burning cords, just a very unique smell if you put your face close enough to the screen to feel the static electricity coming from it.
I had forgotten all about that odor. I'm reading Phillip K. Dick's *Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?* and a line in it made the memory of that come back like a tidal wave.
Anybody else remember the smell of MTV and Space Ghost Coast-to-Coast? 😃 Later.
You'd try to shut it off when you heard your parents coming down the hall and hope the lingering glow and crackle from the screen would fade in time.

This is so sad. I had to take my dog to an affordable vet clinic right on 75th and Federal (Westminster CO) in August. 8 live in Aurora, about 30 miles away and haven't been to Westminster since late 90s. When my kids were little we lived not too far from the McDonald's on 75th and Federal. I would walk them up get them Happy Meals, let them play in the playground. Welp it's now this dark, brutalist building. It made me sad. I was upset.

Sorry my consumerist daughter was AE and Aeropostale. We took the (3 years apart, but still teens) daughters to Rivertown Crossing in GR Mi day after Christmas to spend the cash they got. Oldest (consumerist) shows up with 2 small bags and has $20 remaining. We see a flock of bags coming down the aisle, youngest with 5 bags, chock full, $30 remaining. She had NO shame shopping TJ Maxx.
In 1995, I Was Officially Certified As An “Internet Power User"
Washburn University gave me this certificate at their summer computer camp. At the time, “Power User” meant:
Surviving the screech of a 28.8k modem
Negotiating with your family not to pick up the phone line
Logging into ICQ chatrooms that felt like the Wild West
Building Geocities pages with blinking GIFs and auto-playing MIDI files
30 years later, I’m still proudly holding onto this title.
What’s your most unforgettable Internet memory from the 90s?
I used to sneak onto the computer when everyone else was asleep at night and log onto AOL to play NeverWinter Nights or roleplay in the Red Dragon Inn chatrooms. I thought I was very clever because I would take all the cushions off the couch and pack them around the computer to muffle the dialup modem connection sounds XD

1998 “it’s the internet. It’s for information and understanding and connection, and if you’re not on it you’re wasting your life.” 2026: “it’s the internet. It’s for disinformation and bias and alienation, and if you are on it you’re wasting your life.”
