For some people, any social event doesn’t just require an outfit plan, it means taking the time to sit down and apply makeup. Others might skip this step, seeing it as unnecessary or even undesirable.
So TikToker Sabrina Ali caused a bit of a stir when she made a video arguing that people really should use makeup at certain events. This sparked a sizable debate online as netizens shared their thoughts on her video and female beauty standards in general.
Bored Panda has reached out to Sabrina Ali by email and will update the post when she gets back to us.

“After a certain age, coming outside to any event that you’re all dressed up for and you have heels on with no makeup is unacceptable”
“I don’t care how pretty you think you are with the bare face. We all think we’re beautiful with a bare face, right? But there’s a time and a place for a bare face. Not everywhere is bare face acceptable, grow up, learn how to do makeup.”

“And this is why I always tell people learn how to do things early at a young age or you’re going to keep having to pay for things and you’re going to get tired of having to pay for services that you can do yourself. So learn how to do makeup and avoid coming out to functions looking beautiful but with a bare face.”

Makeup has been around for longer than most countries

Cosmetics might be one of the most enduring elements of fashion, next to jewelry. While the clothes, shoes, and hats we wear differ from century to century and even decade to decade, gold accessories and some colored powder on the face remain ever popular. The first indications of widespread use of makeup, like so many things, came from ancient Egypt, over five thousand years ago. Men and women both would use eyeliner, blush, and perfume regularly and have even been depicted in sculptures and portraits with makeup on.
Various other cultures in the pre-modern world developed makeup and had their own standards, norms, and styles. But it wasn’t until the 19th century that it became an element of everyday style. The cause of this change didn’t have anything to do with makeup itself, rather, artificial lighting was becoming significantly more common and for the first time, regular people could access reflective materials, like mirrors. Try applying some eyeliner in a dim room, using the back of a metal bowl. The results, while perhaps a bit avant-garde, are unlikely to be pretty.
However, this didn’t mean that the popularity of makeup spread evenly. In 1915, The Kansas legislature proposed a law that would basically make makeup for under-forty-five-year-olds illegal, as lawmakers believed that cosmetics existed “for the purpose of creating a false impression.” While this sentiment may have existed in other places, it was not enough to slow down the rising popularity of makeup.
Max Factor (born Maksymilian Faktorowicz) opened a makeup studio in 1909 to help movie stars prepare for roles. He found that regular women would book appointments in an attempt to enhance their looks. As visual entertainment grew more popular, people and women in particular began to copy the styles seen on-screen.
However, modern standards have shifted

The no-makeup look mentioned in the TikTok can trace its origins back to the 1960s. During the 1968 feminist Miss America protest, participants would throw away feminine products, including cosmetics, and burn them. While many women didn’t abandon makeup entirely, cosmetic brands did start to promote “natural look” makeup. While the industry had been male-dominated for years (look at Max Factor in 1909) for the first time cosmetics became a good industry for female business leaders, innovators, and designers.
This video may have caused some controversy precisely because the last decade or two had, perhaps finally, seen the “fall” of makeup as the norm. While still very, very popular, makeup has slowly started to be seen as a choice, rather than a necessity for women when going out. Younger people may not even realize that in previous decades, a woman might be looked down on just for showing the skin on her face. This is important, as the cosmetics industry has not stopped trying to hook a new audience by explicitly targeting children and teens.
While Sabrina Ali might have a point about the aesthetics of makeup, particularly in cases where a person is already spending time and resources to look good, much of the backlash was likely caused by people who don’t want to refight the makeup battles again. This wouldn’t be the first time women’s livelihoods suffered because of shifts in fashion. If you have any experience at all with women’s clothing, you will no doubt have noticed a bizarre lack of pockets. If you want to know why this is, Bored Panda has got you covered.
Many commenters disagreed with her point of view and shared their own thoughts
How strange, men come to all kinds of events, from weddings to Nobel prize ceremonies, "bare-faced" and no one freaks out. Why should it be different for women?
Absoflippinlutely. I'm in my 70's and not worn make up since my early 20's when I found out how it was made. Didn't wear it to my own wedding, nor my daughters'. Wear it if it makes you feel good by all means, but why does conforming to some random 'norm' make you feel good? Analyse it, and guess it's because you "ought to" because 'everyone' says a woman doesn't look good without it.
Load More Replies...So, why is this a "must"? I'm a man, noone asks me to wear make up, why should women (or people who want to be read female) do so?
...and on the other side of the coin, if you did wear makeup, it should be acceptable as well. People should be comfortable in their own skins. Great point, der sebbl. 🤗
Load More Replies...Excuse me? I've never used makeup in my entire life, it's such a waste of time and money for me, and I sure won't start just because of age.
I also have never used it. Never felt the urge to paint myself just to go out in public.
Load More Replies...As long as the hair is brushed, the teeth are clean, the face is washed, and deodorant and nice outfit are in order, there is no reason why you wouldn't be wedding/other formal occasion ready
What’s wrong with wearing no makeup? She’s wearing a wig and false eyelashes, I bet she wouldn’t be too happy if someone told her she shouldn’t do that. I rarely wear makeup, I don’t care for it.
Alicia Keys stopped wearing makeup years ago. Attends formal music industry events regularly
After a certain age, I stopped buying makeup. If someone doesn't like my face, that's their problem, not mine. I'm not old, but too old to chase other people's ideas of what I should look like.
It's very simple. If you don't expect it of men but you expect it of women it's Mysogeny. I will always be smart but I will never wear make up. My face is good enough as it is. Let's care more about how people behave rather than appearance. I'll take kindness over make up any day.
BoredPanda, stop giving these idiotic and narcissistic losers on TikTok a platform. It’s pretty darn pitiful that this site has turned to promoting c**p like this.
Poor girl, she must be very lonely and insecure. Well, me and my bare face are not. Buhbye.
Where the hell does this bish get off telling women that they must adhere to some arbitrary set of rules regarding the way they look? GTFO.
Right?? Who gave her the authority to decide for all women?
Load More Replies...By no means wearing make is mandatory in any event. There are some rules, like not wearing white or black in a wedding, but if I want to, say, stop plucking my eyebrows and go to work looking like Frida Kahlo, I can, and I will.
This is for me a case of my body (in this case my face) my choice. If my bare acne-scarred face irritates you, then don't look at me. My skin feels much better when I don't wear makeup. Sometimes I wear very light make-up for events and I have to soothe my angry skin for several days afterwards, so it's not really worth the effort. If you like to wear make-up, that's fine, but don't criticize those who don't wear make-up for various reasons. Ever.
🤣🤣🤣 I must still be a child then. The closest I've been to make up for the last 15 years is lip balm. I love Bert's Bees. I do take care to cleanse, moisturise etc. I am 45 for info.
Occasions where it requires make up = when I want to put make up on. End of discussion
You want makeup? I'm putting on the mf-ing war paint, then. Have me looking like the demonic drag clown from outer space. Be careful what you demand from others, because you might get it. My style might be a little different from yours lmao
That might just be the idea. I can reactivate my black'n'white gothic makeup for the next wedding. For a drop of colour I will take a drop of fake blood ":-D

"You think you look beautiful" actually no, I don't. My face can be described as "plain" at best, with my Bob Hope ski-slope nose, faded freckles, and crow's feet that I've had since I was a kid. But you know what? None of that matters, because I am not obligated to be pretty. I am not obligated to hide my face behind a 1/4" layer of lanolin and dye. I am not obligated to change my appearance because some butt-chapeau has decided that I'm too old to be seen in public without makeup.
How about don’t tell people what is acceptable and unacceptable on their own body??
I've worn make up precisely 3 times in my 57 years on the planet. Hated it, won't do it again. I'm sorry if my old-hag, honestly come by, naked wrinkly skin offends you, but that is a you problem.
Nope. I'm 63 yo and only wear makeup on stage. I have no wish to attract people who look only into superficial appearance; if someone can't see my spirit, integrity and intelligence, I don't care. I can't wait to scare the c**p out of the idiots in another decade or two, when I'm supposed to be a "nice little old lady..."
It's great fun. Not that I scare the cr*p out of anyone, they're more likely to hold doors open for me and/or offer to lift heavy boxes when they see an elderly lady. (My face and bod is elderly, my mind has lagged behind, it is still 30 or 40) However, some will assume that because you are old, you are thick and deaf. It is a great delight to prove them wrong!

Makeup should only be used to correct issues like scars, blemishes, uneven skin tone, or to enhance the good and minimize the bad. Otherwise, use it sparingly, because the point is to not look “made up”. Once I turned 60, I stopped wearing makeup entirely. Never wore it unless I was at work or out for the evening. Otherwise, clean face. Hell, even when I did wear makeup, it was minimal, because I never liked how too much makeup felt on my skin, like my pores couldn’t breathe. So, even though I had makeup on, people would ask me if I was wearing any, because it was minimal. No one comments on it now, so I guess I look the same, with or without it—-so why bother? Besides, without makeup I can wash my face with nice cool water if it gets hot. No worrying about ruining my makeup, no worrying about makeup running down my face if I perspire. I. Love. It.

My "MakeUp" consists of eyeliner eyeshadow, mascara. Since pre covid I may have put it on about a dozen times. I love, that don't feel the need to masquerade every day anymore.
So, did the "TikToker" get enough attention for her needy self to be satisfied for at least a day? Or did she have to come up with some new shyte the next morning? Honestly, if people would just let one person respond to the s**t and then just block these idiots (which is hard, I get that).
Hubby loves the face God gave me. I don't need c**p on it. And I don't need a self-righteous little snip telling me what to do with my own body! Grow up and find more important things to pontificate about.
I prefer you see ME and not what's under the makeup. Mascara and eyeliner and lipstick since I was 17. Got plenty of "D" and still living the life! Oh yeah, saved a s**t load of money!! Real talk what's unacceptable to you means absolutely nothing to me. I'm happy you doing you. But don't belittle people who don't see things the way you do. Fate has a way of making you regret that superior attitude.
Cue: screams of hysterical laughter! At my "certain age" and after multiple SERIOUS surgeries I'm thrilled just to be able to walk out the door on my own two feet. I don't give a flying f@Ck whether I'm cute pretty or whatever. I wear the nicest clothes I can manage and my heirloom jewelry when I can. And this girl will find out for herself about the REALITY of beauty. Ps. My DH after 47 years together worships the ground I walk on.
Mind your bizz, Sabrina. If you feel beautiful in your own skin then never let anyone else make you feel otherwise. Some people are SO BEAUTIFUL with no makeup and then I see them with a lot on and they don't look as beautiful.
No one needs to wear makeup. Makeup is an affectation to make women look more sexy if I don't want to wear makeup screw you if you want me to
After a lengthy fight with chemo, I discovered the less I wear makeup, the less I need makeup. I cringe when I feel I should for an event, as I know it'll take a minimum of three days for my complexion to recover. Most days I use mascara, tinted lip balm and sunscreen, sometimes tinted. I'm in my 50's though, don't have a professional image I need to project. It's a personal choice, but if I'd known years ago how bad makeup was for my skin I would have focused on care rather than paint.
I am 60 and only wore makeup for a few weddings, I hate it. Just want to wash my face. Why is it so important to wear makeup? What is wrong with my face the way it is?
We moved into this apartment 11 years ago. My makeup bag is still packed away somewhere, never missed it. I own two tubes of lipstick and one of them is about 20 years old now, so, yeah, keep your silly makeup rules to yourself, babe. I felt pressured to wear makeup when I worked in the corporate world many moons ago. The job of mother to an autistic son never required me to make myself look "pretty" (very objective), so I signed up for life ;-)
Life lesson: You don't have to abide by "rules" that other people make up. There are laws; there are moral obligations; there are tacit or specific agreements that you have with people in your life. And then there's nonsense that jokers in the world come up with; they ain't your boss, they ain't your problem.
I'm 52 and my face is always bare. I was once made-up by a make-up specialist, but I thought I looked like a man in drag. Not that there is anything wrong with drag or men, but...my face just DEFIES make-up. So there we are. Happily this is a first-world problem, if that.
LOL. No, girl. I have absolutely dreadful skin - dry and itchy and it gets severely uncomfortable after I ever wear make-up. Any of it. 30 minutes is pushing it for me, and worsens my skin condition severely so... I'd much better keep my face bare, thank you.
I don't wear make up even to a wedding or funeral. My sister takes 30 mins to spackle her face and never leaves her house or my driveway until she does lol. Too many products and too little time. Eh, do what you want nobody cares
After a certain age you'd think people would mind their own business and let everyone do what works for them, not just assume they know best.
I'm 47. Haven't worn makeup in 20 or so years. Everyone tells me I look around 30 at most, and I have relatively clear skin & only just started using moisturizer. Not having a makeup routine gives me 15 extra minutes of sleep.
I don't know who you think you are telling the entire world how to live, but what you are basically telling us is that for a woman, ageing is a crime against humanity and an old face a vision of horror that need to be hidden at all cost, including being painted like a w h 0 r e. Interesting considering that even at 71, I probably look younger than you. Take care of your own body dysmorphy and leave the rest of normal women alone already. There are pills for what you have. Oy vey, man, I tell you... Get help. 🤪🔨🙄🤮🦶
She's talking out of her a=@÷. Woman can wear makeup or not as they choose. And as for a certain age she needs to get some age before she can tell others what a certain age is. She's definitely one of the people eho create body shaming issues for woman
This lady need to have a seat and be quiet. Stop telling other ppl how to live. Do you and mind your business 🙄
Chemicals in make up are not regulated. I'm not wearing their poisonous ingredients. Same for foot deforming high heels. But you do you if you are too insecure to be natural. I think lip liner looks ugly and false eyelashes, don't get me started on those and hair extensions.
No make up, or if you care to know, pantihose/stocking for me...waste of time and money. Skincare, lipbalm, and sunscreen are about my limits, unless I'm going to a wedding...im in my 50s and work in retail
It is never a must. Makeup is a choice, and it's a personal choice at that. You can have your own opinion but don't be pressuring people to do something they don't want to do. This could mess up peoples self esteem for their natural beauty.
This woman needs to shush it right up. That's coming from someone who personally feels like a full face is the best, FOR ME, for going out and special occasions.. shoot, for work everyday. I enjoy the heck out of it. I honestly do see woman with bare faces and dressed all up and think, if only some eyeliner and whatnot but that's only because that's how I would have done it as part of the whole experience.
No. You neither change your features nor do you mess with your skin/body only because your hair is done or your clothes nice (as long as you skip high heels, clothes or products that are not good for your body etc) I am not against the whole shebang to look "femine" but I personally will not be forced to submit to high heels that I just can't wear any more, scratchy synthetic dresses or stinky hair products (anymore). You can look professional or festive without.
