This Guy Tried To Ban Gay People From Entering His Store And It Backfired Hilariously

When it comes to stating your opinion, there’s nothing like a big sign to perfectly convey your stance one topic or another. Jeff Amyx, a hardware store owner from Tennessee, displayed his stance on homosexuality by declaring gay people were not welcome in his store. The whole story began in 2015 when Amyx decided to put-up a sign that said ‘No gays allowed’ on his hardware store door. The store owner didn’t stop at the sign but chose to also sell homophobic merchandise.
Recently, the hardware store owner, who is also a Baptist minister, decided to replace the sign with one that includes more information in it. This time the sign states, “We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone who would violate our rights of freedom of speech & freedom of religion.”
Once the whole story went online there was no way back. Many users took to Twitter and even the store’s personal Yelp page to state their opinion. People encouraged others to boycott the store, and even made an entire joke out of it by reviewing the store as a gay bar or even a sex shop. “Amyx Hardware & Roofing Supplies” received so much backlash that Yelp management even started deleting the comments, but this did not stop people from posting. The owner placed a clipboard next to his store where people who agree with him can sign, however, it is nothing compared to the over 300 one star ratings on his store’s page.

People took social media to spread the message, encouraging others to boycott Amyx’s store
In fact, the store’s Yelp account received so many bad reviews, Yelp management started deleting comments that were mainly focused on the sign and not the shop itself
But nobody could stop the massive backlash
And even though people can sign a board next to the store to support the owner

To be fair, there's more than one reason why people can't spell - dyslexia or poor education for example. I wouldn't criticise someone with those problems. Being a blatant homophobe is in a much worse category.
Unfortunately, Casey, spell check doesn't always help much as dyslexia is about far more than poor spelling ability. My brother makes such a mess of a word sometimes that the computer has no idea what he means and he can't always pick the right one out of a list. He can't even find a word in the dictionary if the first few letters are too jumbled. They leap all over the screen/page and just make no sense sometimes. He can also get a word wrong but that is spelled correctly if used in another context. Dyslexia is a bit too complicated to be solved that way. I doubt this guy is dyslexic but he is probably poorly educated which isn't always the individuals fault. Anyway, I just feel sad for my brother who feels like an idiot when people jump all over spelling and grammar with no understanding that for some it isn't something they can control.

Hey Bubba... that's funny! I did think about that Molly. I wondered if the sign makers thought he was so unpleasant that he deserved an incorrectly spelt sign! He might have ordered it online where the onus would be on him to get it right as they tend to follow instructions literally to the letter. Chances are none of them could spell sadly.

Jhoa - the difference would be that a cake promoting same sex marriage isn't a hate crime. A Nazi themed cake bearing a swastika or pro Nazi message would be. I disagree. He may be an ass, but as long as he isn't providing a public, state service (not sure what you'd call it); such as driving a bus or providing healthcare, he has the right to do whatever he wishes. That's freedom. There was this controversy about a guy not wanting to make a wedding cake for a gay couple. What if he was to make a Nazi-themed cake for someone who was racist? Is he allowed to refuse then if he doesn't agree with their message? Sure, he's being rude, but it's his choice.

We do in the UK as well. There is (or was) a case in the supreme court recently where a Christian bakers were appealing a decision twice made where they were found to have acted in a discriminatory manner and were fined for refusing to bake a cake promoting same sex marriage. The shop owner featured here wouldn't be allowed to do this as he is "displaying or circulating discriminatory literature or posters". It can't be called free speech if it's a hate crime. I read that the US supreme court is considering a similar claim from a gay couple who were refused a wedding cake by a bakery in Colorado in 2012.

Free speech and freedom to associate or NOT associate for any asinine reason you choose is a natural right that the Constitution *was designed to* protect, but sadly it doesn't these days. With the creation of "federally protected classes" the law will force you to associate with certain people even if its against your own will. The Constitution was not created in order to enforce "social justice", "social equality" or "social morality", but the reality is that its being used for exactly that. We're well on our way to a society where the state will tell us exactly what to think and how to act at ever turn and the sad thing is that the majority of the population is happy as hell for it.

Well, "love" does not mean "I accept everything you do". You can love your child and still forbid him from puting his finger into electrical outlet, because you know it will harm him. In Christianity (not all denominations though) doing homosexuals atcs is forbidden because it's belived to be bad for a person. So if you love someone and you see him doing something that you believe is bad for him, you will tell him that. Example from the Bible: Jesus met prostitue. Not just a two way street - there are other avenues. I wouldn't get children to sign anything at all. I think it's wrong. I'd let them be children and when they ask questions I'll encourage them to do their own research so that they see all sides of the argument and can make up their own mind. Not everyone believes that bringing up a child is about making them think the same way as the parent. Independence of thought and freedom to learn.

The only people who could enter and violate is freedom of speech or religion is a government official, because these freedoms are freedom from the government restricting their rights. If I tell someone to shut up when I don't like what they are saying, I am not (I CAN NOT) be violating their right to free speech. Talk about a lack of education in this country! Freedom of speech is irrelevant in the context of Yelp reviews. Freedom of speech ONLY applies to what the government can NOT do: the US government cannot arrest or jail someone for their speech (UNLESS it is inciting of riot, violence, or armed rebellion against the government). This freedom has nothing at all to do with other entities. Yelp is not the government. Yelp can do what ever it wants with its website/app. The same is true for every other private/public website and business. The freedom of speech right does not guarantee you a platform to speak (and it does not protect you from the consequences that arise from your speech).
