Teen Ruins Aunt’s $20k Coat As A “Prank” For Views, She Decides To Sue

It may not be April 1st any time soon, but pranks can be pulled year round! Sneak some toothpaste between some Oreos and deliver them kindly on a plate to your friends, stick googly eyes on all of your roommate’s produce for a surprise when they open the fridge, fill your partner’s car with balloons before they head off to work, or cover your bathroom mirror with unflattering selfies of your roommate. As long as nobody gets hurt and there’s no property damaged, feel free to have a little fun!

It’s easy to get carried away with pranks though. One minute you and your friends are laughing hysterically, then before you know it, someone’s being rushed to the hospital or calling the fire department… It’s important never to take a prank too far. But unfortunately for one woman, a “prank” her niece recently pulled was not very well received and might even escalate to them hiring lawyers.

Below, you can find the full story that this frustrated aunt recently shared on the Am I the [Jerk]? subreddit wondering if suing her sister and niece would be an overreaction to the thousands of dollars in damages caused. We would love to hear your thoughts on the situation down below, pandas, and then if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article featuring a prank gone wrong, you can find that right here!

This woman is wondering if it would be wrong to sue her niece for ruining an expensive coat on purpose

The woman later shared an update on the situation and explained what her niece’s punishment will be

She also responded to several readers and provided additional details about the situation

Personally, I am far from a prankster myself, pandas. Maybe I’ll do something small like hiding a silly photo in my partner’s drawers, so he is greeted with a smiling Shrek when he goes to pick out his clothes for the day. But plotting pranks to pull on family members and recording them to post on Instagram is way out of my wheelhouse. Teenagers tend to be naturals at pulling pranks though. And I would never want to stand in a kid’s way when they’re just trying to have a little fun. But this girl is 16 years old. She should understand that this “joke” was far from harmless.

Not all 16-year-olds have a great understanding of money, but one would think that a teen would consider $20k to be even more than it is. This girl likely has much less than that amount in her bank account, so throwing it down the drain by destroying this coat is shocking. When it comes to how the aunt decides to respond to the coat incident, legal action seems appropriate. However, engaging in a legal battle is expensive and complicated, especially when trying to sue a family member. Technically, one can sue a minor, but they typically don’t have much money, and their parents might not be held responsible for their actions.

According to FindLaw.com, minors can be sued for defamation, causing personal injury, assault or battery, a copyright violation, property damage, trespassing, breach of contract, or infliction of emotional distress. In this situation, it appears that property damage might be the way to go. However, aside from the niece being a minor, it also may seem a bit extreme to sue a family member. Will the relationship be permanently damaged? Will it cause more rifts in the family? Well, apparently, about one third of people would consider suing a family member or friend if an injury or damages were severe enough. It’s not an easy course of action, but sometimes it is warranted.

This situation is unfortunate all around. The woman lost her beautiful coat that was a gift from her mother-in-law, and her relationship with her sister and aunt is likely permanently tarnished, regardless of whether they end up going to court or not. Many readers agreed that this woman is justified if she decides to seek legal action. Of course, nobody needs a $20k coat in the first place, and she is well aware that it is luxurious, as she mentioned in the post. But causing $20k worth of damage in someone’s home or car would be frowned upon without any questions, so this shouldn’t be any different. Let us know in the comments what you think about this situation, pandas, and if you’ve ever found yourself in a legal dispute with a family member, feel free to share your personal stories as well. Then if you’d like to read another Bored Panda article about pranks gone wrong, look no further than right here.

Many people sympathized with the woman and agreed that she would be justified in pursuing legal action

Anyone else sick of this kind of attitude when people do stuff and say "It's a prank" as if it absolves them from all responsibility.

completely! and sometimes they don't even feel like (what i would consider) pranks... like you're not putting your co-worker's stapler in jello - you're slapping a stranger or whatever... i've seen idiots on youtube full on assault someone and immediately go to "oh it's a prank!" just feels lazy and mean! love the person who commented we should back the stockades for pranksters, seems reasonable to me lol

In reading the follow up, I'm happy with the way the BIL responded. I'm glad she's going to face some responsibility for her actions. Feel however you want about fur or leather....I get that. You may feel morally justified in destroying something but if you are going to be self-righteous and commit a crime over it, then you have to have the same willingness to pay for your crime. I watch a lot of court shows and it drives me crazy when people destroy something that belongs to someone else and act like 'it's not a big deal' because *they* don't think it's valuable or don't think they should pay the full value of it because 'it was an accident'. You still damaged it beyond repair. Especially with cars. I could have an old car that gets me to work and works fine it's just older but it's paid off and i can't afford to buy a new one. And you're texting and hit me. Now my car is considered totaled and I can't afford a new/used car so now I lose my job because i can't get to work. It's so annoying how people don't see how their actions cost people so much.

Wonder how many of his daughter’s OTHER horrible misbehavior Daddy was never told about, because apparently his wife didn’t immediately call and tell him about this when it happened! If it was my kid, I would be mortified, apologetic, and blowing up my husband’s phone trying to get through to him and tell him what happened, so we could figure out how to make things right again, together. So it looks like Mom regularly covers for her precious little angel’s “pranks”, since Daddy was clueless, and utterly shocked about this one. Yeah, there’s a load of context going on in that household that we don’t know, and I’m only speculating about, that created this situation.

Reddit has an update: "When my husband got home, I told him what happened and showed him the video. He asked if I spoke with my BIL and I said no, all my conversations were with my sister. He said that he will take care of it. Now, a disclaimer: I understand nothing when it comes to insurance claims, and this is what my husband told me/I understood happened. My husband talked with my BIL, told him exactly what happened and showed him the prank video. Then he told him that the coat was insured, we will be filing a claim and submitting the video, and we might have to file charges for the claim (he assured him that we would be dropping the charges, we do not want to send niece to jail). Then he told him that one of two things might happen: after our insurance pays us, they will come after them. If their insurance pays, their premium will skyrocket. If it doesn't, they might sue them, and might get a lien on their house. [...]

[...] My BIL asked if there was a way he could pay us without involving insurance, my husband told him that that was what we wanted at first, but that my sister insisted that they will not be paying us back. Apparently, my BIL was not in the know, and he was very pissed off at what my niece did, and my sister's response. So they came to this solution: my niece's car will be sold, and if it doesn't fetch the whole compensation money, she will have to get a job and pay me the whole check untill it is paid off. Also she is grounded for the rest of the school year. I am thankful for the people who encouraged me to talk with my husband."

Ok, so I did a little bit of research. Since it was mentioned that it was a Loro Piana coat I went to their website and took a look at the coats. It most probably is the Alberic coat worth 19 500€ It is made of cashmere and mink. https://at.loropiana.com/en/p/woman/coats-and-trench/alberic-coat-FAM4137?colorCode=A193 There is only one other coat in that price range, but it costs 25 200€

I have to agree, pranks like that seem better on a movie or show, but not for teens to get their 15 minutes. That just seems really malicious though, she did that to a family member on purpose to get reaction. I couldn't imagine doing something like that to get attention...

Niece is not only going to learn that actions have consequences, she’s also going to learn the value of a dollar, and just how LONG she’s going to have to work—-while walking to her job because her car is gone—-to earn that amount of money. Not only is the prank bad behavior,, as well as selfish, it’s downright cruelty, because while the coat was valuable, it also had sentimental value because it was a gift from OP’s mother in law, with who, she has a wonderful relationship.

Normally I'd be the first to be like "that's what you get for wearing a $30,000 coat!" Mostly because I'm poor & jealous... but also because I just wanna p**s ppl off... but nah.. I don't do pranks. Especially when they're at the expense of other people who aren't even willing participants or who haven't given their consent to be pranked in this way. IMO if you are going to destroy someone's property all for a stupid tik tok then you better ask for their permission first... does that ruin the prank? Sure.... but that should tell you how fucken stupid your prank is to begin with.. you're literally destroying someone's property for no reason without their consent. That's also a felony since it's $30k worth of damage. Harmless pranks amongst friends is one thing... but this? Nope. You're a d**k.

I can appreciate that sentiment regarding conspicuous displays of consumption when you literally have a leaky roof at best over your head. I admit that I have giggled and laughed at stupid rich people wrecking $100,000+ sports cars on YouTube. The difference is these are self inflicted wounds. The owners damaged the cars. Thing is, someday most people, even the most impoverished, will be given or come to possess so.ething that is truly valuable to them or with more than money in sentimental value. If someone did the same to their property and just wrote it off as "well it's just a prank, and besides it's only worth about $59 anyways" doesn't make it any better or worse. Sometimes that was valuable was taken without compensation. What goes around comes around. Imagine if the kid had friends that saw the video and thought it would be fun to "prank" her and ruin her car. Would she think that was a real prank and OK? I think not.

It seems to me that the niece was lucky she did this "prank" to her aunt rather than someone else - others might have been more eager to pursue charges for what happened. Hopefully the niece will learn her lesson from the loss of her vehicle, being grounded and having to pay her aunt back for the damage.

NTA Careful with fluoride toothpaste on Oreo pranks, especially if small children are nearby. Overdoses of toothpaste normally occur in children, but too much fluoride for anyone can be toxic or even lethal. Also, fashion designer here, there are literally hundreds of not thousands of hours spent putting together a well crafted, luxury fur garment, by highly skilled artisans, that will last for generations, and is more eco friendly than faux furs that end up polluting micro plastics into H2O from landfills after a few years. Animal cruelty arguments loose their punch when weighed against horrific human rights violations in off shore faux fur factories. Also, if you work out the issue amongst yourselves, there should be something of your coat to salvage- perhaps a stole, a scarf, cuffs, a hat, a short jacket, bolero, a fabulous collar, button earrings, mittens? If insurance isn’t involved you don’t need to worry about relinquishing the coat. Hope you can find a great fur stylist.

This brat ruined a beautiful fur coat to get attention? I would be livid. This kid will never learn respect for anything or anyone. Grounding isn't enough. Luckily, husband stepped in. A little leverage works wonders. Just because someone has money, doesn't mean that they should get disrespected, and just brush it off. So the deal is made and brat learns the value of a dollar. However, I would advise OP to brush up on things like insurance, and where money comes from, etc. If anything happens to rich husband, she'll be up the creek.

NTA. Sue her and be aggressive collecting, including wage garnishment and collecting her property. If this ruins your sister's relationship, this is on the sister not you. Seems like the sister is a bad parent and not punishing their child or taking responsibility. As someone mentioned above, you wouldn't let this go if they smashed your car. The only good prank (or indeed the only prank that counts as a prank and isn't just bullying) is one where *everyone* involved ends up laughing. Like the time I gave my mother a horrible little stuffed cane toad for Christmas, knowing she wouldn't like it, and all prepared to say "just kidding! Here's your real present!" when she complained. Instead of which she unwrapped the toad and said "oh it's AWFUL... I love it!" So we all ended up laughing over both the prank and the fact that it backfired on me. She still has that toad proudly displayed in the loungeroom. Also, back on topic, this kid is a nasty little brat who deserves everything she gets.

I don’t think it was a prank as we were brought up to understand pranks to be. That niece’s “prank” held more elements of grudge and malice than any definition of prank has ever held. The malicious plot had the mother involved either directly since the two first saw the sister’s coat or indirectly by the deplorable manner of upringing of the niece. Any remark about the extravagant price of the coat is tantamount to justifying the niece’s wrongful behaviour and is encouraging the abhorrent victim mentality that will ruin her future and this generation’s impact on society. The punishment must be seen to its full for mother and child

You have to be really dumb to commit $20K in property damage and essentially film a video confession and put it on the internet. I used to be 16 and I didn't throw paint on anyone. Some of my mom's brothers would probably act like this girl so hopefully she learns to behave better.

As someone who used to work for a furrier, I can tell you that furs are the original and ultimate in ecologically responsible and recyclable winter warmth. On top of that. The process of taking many fur skins that is each approx 35cm x 15cm, and turning it into a visually seamless coat, takes a lot of time. A waist length coat would have taken me a full week just to do the furs. Then more time to cut the pattern, sew, line and install the closures. At nearly 100 hrs work, my boss would've charged $4,000 and we were a small store. Not a big name brand with access to fancy equipment. For those upset about furs. Do you get upset about fish, rabbits, goats, sheep, cows, and lobsters being bred to be killed? After all, there are laws that farmers must follow about their treatment. It is the same with the European Fur Federation. It is only the Asian countries that have the terrible record with horrible animal care. Don't blame the whole industry for the behaviour of a portion of it.

God I hate “pranks.” they used to be funny and cute but anymore most of them just are hateful. Do you technically need a $20k coat to survive? No. Do I technically need chocolate to survive? No. But if you gotta live life then why the hell not enjoy it? Plus gifts are special, so it's a lot more than just a really expensive coat. If you had a Ferrari or a McLaren and she purposefully damaged it to the point where it wasn't safe to drive, would people go “I don't see why you need an expensive care anyway”? I should hope they wouldn't. There's nothing wrong with having nice things.

A 20k coat...? 20k is twice the downpayment of my car in terms of currency so even I wouldn't touch that coat with a 10 ft pole much less be caught anywhere within touching distance of it given my clumsy nature. NTA but thinking of putting a sign on my front door: "Please don't bring anything into this house worth more than $9.99, we can't afford to replace it if it gets damaged!". Not intentional damage of course, but imagine if I'd spilled something on this coat! Yikes!

As a teenager, this girl, knowing how much the coat cost, needs to own up to something like that or she will not learn serious consequences later. If I was her parent, I would take that girl's phone or her car since she thought it would be funny to put it online. That is unbelievable... 😔 It would be different if she were a little child, yes.

Yeah, I'm also tired of the pranks. It's almost as though some fail to realize that pranks aren't exactly funny to everyone. I may also be standing alone in this but I was appalled at the prank itself. The coat costing 20K was irrelevant to me. It could have costed five bucks but the matter still remains that property was intentionally destroyed under the guise of views and likes. It's clear that the 16 year old niece was more so attempting to fit into society by posting a not so funny prank which she'll be kicking herself for - for a while!

Because it was an intentional act, by a close relative, insurance would not have covered this. Btw, the cost of the coat is not important. What's important, is the lack of boundaries and respect for others and their property.

When you destroy someone else's property on purpose it's called vandalism. I like hearing that I idiots get to responsibility for their actions. Yes it shouldn't even have happened to begin with. Also I wouldn't ground her I'd just take everything she holds dear from her. People only need like 10 sets of clothes, don't need computers and electronics, etc. There are school computers and libraries. As we say in my household, "play stupid games, win stupid prizes"

While I think it's insane to even create 20K coates (seriously, people STILL wwear fur as decoration???) , much less wear them casually, I think it will be a very good lesson for the nice. Kids have been killed because of these damn pranks. Doing this kind of damage on purpose, fully knowing how much the coat is worth, needs to have painful consequences.

Their real objective of a prank is to have fun and joy, but if it is done and at the end it causes a big impact, it's not considered as a prank anymore, but a crime.

hmm if it is a mink coat (as it turns out it is), I can understand say, throwing blood at it, in an ecological or animal rights protest. (a) it can be washed, and (b) it's not permanent damage and (c) there's a point to the prank because it makes an ethical point. However, throwing paint just makes the dead animals' lives futile since they died to be turned into a piece of PVC. So in that case, not cool.

That's Right Girlfriend... Make those devil relatives PAY-UP, IN-FULL; your niece is a jealous evil girl, that is a hater...she knew that she was not suppose to play an awful prank on you like that. And, the sad & unprofessional response of your sister, shows how she really feels about you 😢...But, I am truly glade you talked with your husband & he talked with your brother in-law...Real men like that talk about real business & solutions to big problems, when they occur! Therefore, I truly hate you had to encounter your Beautiful Fur Coat being destroyed...And, for the record NO YOU ARE NOT THE WRONG PERSON HERE, THE PEOPLE THAT ARE WRONG in this situation is YOUR MEAN NIECE & HER MOTHER....They Need To Pay Alllll the money 💰 back to you, by any ways possible, because of all the harm, stress & pain they have caused you. Hang in there, and as much as possible, be watchful & know who truly loves you & who doesn't when you are around people!

Okay hear me out That stupid kid needs a brain she probably uses TikTok or some other BS like it so it's the platform's fault and it's the parents fault for not preventing the stupid kid from watching BS like that and they didn't force her to leave a dump idea of pranks online But I must at the very least say that no body really needs a coat that expensive Yet the kid is so stupid that she didn't even give it a second thought or even do that in some sort of a plan (make it scripted like any other mother frickin bs channel or whatever) so yeah the kid deserve what she got and actually she deserves a far worse punishment for wasting that amount of money If she wanted to do something to give her views she could have talked with the aunt to try to convince her to sell it then go buy food for homeless people together (and Film it if she wants tho it ain't a good idea) it's a good thing to do and does no damage

No but seriously doubt that you are going to get much restitution that actually is sustainable as far as your niece's life is concerned, if you simply liquidate her method of transportation to and from a job. Maybe it is possible to recover a portion by reporting it more as an accidental theme , at least to the adjuster and combined this with a biweekly or weekly payment plan that she funded via a part time job. She may even like the job so much she gets 40 hours a week and so it ends up benefitting both parties.

I love a good, stress good, practical joke and have gone to some effort on some. But i have carved in granite rules about them. Nothing that damages property i won't replace, and if i make a mess...i clean it up. My friends lived right across the hall from our RA in the dorms. If both doors were open and the windows were as well, we got a nice cross breeze. So one day we got paper punches and made enough dots to fill a couple of measuring cups. We stuffed those into balloons and inflated them. Next we taped them above the door to the ra's room. Then i added an electrical device I'd built that when triggered made a spark that would pop the balloons. Knock on the door, it opens, balloons pop, and luck was with us because his window was open and the cross breeze sucked the shower of dots into his room like a blizzard. Perfect. But, before the last dot had hit the ground, my cohort was on his way down to get the vacuum so we could clean up. Tl:dr u break it u buy it.

When I was a kid, a prank was swapping the sugar bowl with salt so your dad had a bit of a shock when he sipped his tea but also got a laugh out of it. Then he got you back later by screenshotting your computer screen, setting it as the background and hiding your desktop icons then watching whilst you tried for ages to figure out why nothing on your desktop was double clickable . You know, fun, funny and not involving malicious high value actionable property damage. Times have changed....

The hallmark of a good prank is "confuse, don't abuse"; in this case, 'abuse' includes destroying someone's property. In the Navy, some very common but pretty harmless pranks include: telling someone to bring you a bucket of steam, telling them to take their barracks mattress down to the quarterdeck to get it stamped, telling someone to fetch you a length of centerline (centerline is the imaginary line running down the middle of the length of a ship), drawing on someone's ID with dry erase marker or putting tape over the chip so it doesn't work when you insert it into a reader... people get frustrated, but it's far from abusive

I'm surprised at her sister's reaction and taking her daughter's side. If the roles were reversed she would be just as upset about the jacket. Our job as parents are to teach our children what is acceptable and what is not. This was a teenager who KNEW enough about the coat to Google the price of it. She knew the value of her Aunt's coat so there's no excuse for a prank like this knowing it would ruin an expensive item.

Some of y’all have even said that pranksters (and this would include this minor child) should be send to the stockades. We ain’t even murdering people humanely, anymore. This kid is going to learn a lesson but that doesn’t seem to be enough for some of y’all. You’ve heard one thing about this kid and people are full on calling her names and acting worse than what she did. I’ve already said my piece about the actual incident. Find it if you want. I’m not defending her actions. But as someone with a 16 year old and since I was 16 once, I’m sure glad I was given grace, even when it came with hefty consequences for my actions. Y’all are out here condemning this child for the rest of her life. 🤦🏻‍♀️

There should be very steep consequences for the niece. But once emotions have died down, I hope your coat is worth the relationship with your only sister and niece. And before anyone comes for me, go ahead and reread that first line. I, personally, couldn’t live with myself for filing criminal charges against a child, knowing that would change that relationship forever. Your niece will learn her lesson. But the bigger lesson will be that your coat was more important than maintaining that family unit. Maybe you can hang out with your coat when you’re missing your family.

Well the most important thing is that she make an attempt to make restitution on this matter, at minimum. Furthermore, the insurance and may supplement the principle to replace this item as well. She can also pay you back while working, over time. I think you will only be shooting yourself in the foot by taking the money from the sale of her car however, as she will be more financially able to do the right thing by having reliable transportation to get to work.

NTA but you're at risk of being one. I don't understand why no one is talking about the fact that teens' brains are not fully developed and that they often make reckless choices. That does not justify what she did and she needs to be held accountable, but the original poster is treating her niece as an adult and frankly she isn't. If the car is worth 20,000 or more, everything is settled. If it's not, it should still be sold and you should get whatever it was valued at. If your niece takes on a job to pay you back, it's likely going to take years. This is not really appropriate punishment for the action. No one died or was physically harmed. Losing her car seems appropriate punishment. Also, consider whether it's really worth losing the relationship with the sister and niece over a coat.

People's experiences matter no matter where they fall on the spectrum of "first" or other (that system is extremely incorrect and damaging, especially to countries that need economic assistance or deserve restitution/reparations) and saying "I'm sorry but" just negates the apology. She didn't pay for it, it was a gift. And for $20k you couldn't feed a whole country and, if you could, it wouldn't be for very long. That's like saying me almost dying in a car accident is a "first world problem" because I had a car to get broken in

I'm definitely in the minority but I think it's crazy to try and bankrupt the family because of the kid's stupid-@s$ decision. $20k for a coat is f()cking insane. Make the kid work to pay off an agreed amount, but to drag the family to court for thousands and thousands of dollars? I could never.

Did you miss the fact that she said they could afford it and that the 16 had a $20k car? If you can't afford the consequences, don't do something that intentionally harms someone else without their consent

Stupid was making a video out of it and posting it. Stupid was kid admitting to knowing the full price of the coat and know in full she was going permanently damage it. Stupid for you not to know for insurance to pay out, they need to file a CRIMINAL report with the POLICE against the niece. Even if they dropped the chargers afterward, the insurance will go after someone.

This doesn't sound like any simple "prank" at all. This has all the common earmarks of being yet another young activism protest by some dipsh!+ teen/young adult who think they have some kind of entitlement to destroy expensive items and/or priceless works of art so they can get noticed and heard. This kid should be getting arrested for felony vandalism and given solid jail time. I'm not a fan of people paying into the slaughter of potentially endangered and protected species just for a coat they will rarely even wear, but I'm even less tolerant of these punk little spoiled, self-entitled brats thinking they can get away with this c**p. Was probably put up to it by a jealous sister/mother anyway...so jail the kid and sue the mother for damages. May ruin a family relationship, but it sounds like that ship already sailed anyway.

This woman should never have worn that stupid coat in the first place. How stupid do you have to be to walk around in a coat thats worth more than most peoples cars. Honestly I think she has to accept that a) she knew not to take the coat out for this very reason and b) moral judgement and conceptualization of enormous sums of money like that are almost never a 16 y/o strong suits. If anything, they'd have no real world understanding of the value of money since they've likely never had to pay for anything themselves. The magnitude of the problem stems back to her srupidty of wearing a 20k coat. And besides, what kind of out of touch, privileged rich people bs is this? Sounds more like an episode of real housewives or something

I think settled agreement was reasonable. However, I would change one thing. I would not ground the girl for the school year. What I would do is require her to wear it for 365 anytime she had to go anywhere. If she lost it then she would be grounded the remainder of the time. This would do two things. First, the embarrassment of wearing something which is ruined. Second, and moe importantly, she will have explain the situation ain to anyone who asked, it might make her feel some guilt and hopefully some remorse.

Rule of thumb, spend money where you spend your time. This isn't wear and tear from life, this is like someone taking a sledgehammer to your car, smashing the car and smashing it into scrap metal for the laughs. Letting the niece get away with a slap on the wrist is how you get Karen, who feel entitled to do whatever they want because they never learned of a thing called consequences for one's actions.

She also said the niece looked up the price on the internet and showed her what it was worth. The niece cooked up the scheme to destroy it for internet attention after (much to the disappointment of those thinking she did it as some kind of activist movement). You think the teen cared what it was made out of? Maybe for the sake of her 15 seconds of fame online. "To see how she (OP) reacts".

Since it sounds like the lady and her husband don't need the money, maybe don't sell the neices car, and don't ask for the rest of the money to make up the $20, 000 ... Instead, make a video where the car is crushed and set on fire (maybe try and get some of her favorite personal possessions in there as well), and send that to her. Then, forgive the rest of the money that's owed, in exchange for being able to show the video at family events for the next 15 years.

What color was the paint? What type of paint was it? Where can I see the video? Aside from these questions, the girl needs to be taught a lesson, so make her pay, she also needs some kind of mental health therapy so that she understands what she did was wrong, obviously the sister is not doing a very good job teaching her right and wrong or assuming personal responsibility for one’s actions.

This is proof that men are better at rational thinking and objective reasoning. For all intents and purposes the mother is just as bad as the teen, and the teens bad attitude is probably stemming from the mother's jealousy for her sister's good fortune. Note how the Father of the girl was horrified of the teens actions and punished her far more severely than the mother's weak as water respons. The OP, Sister and Neice all act and respond through emotions whereas the men acted with reason.

If you spend $20k on coat then you have $20k to spare. It's clothing, there's always a risk of irreparable damage. If I lost my most expensive coat I would be mad, but I would replace it in a week. I wouldn't sue family. There would certainly be consequences but suing family over a common item is absurd. Sue if they damage your house or car, not a coat.

You missed the part where OP explained they could afford to repay it or take nieces car & sell it for same value. Regardless, part of being a parent of a minor is taking responsibility for the financial costs they incur, prank or not. What if her niece had done a prank by throwing paint on OPs new car rather than her coat? Would you expect OP to collect (be it lawsuit and/or insurances claim) or does your issue with it revolve around the type of property rather than the cost?

I have to agree, pranks like that seem better on a movie or show, but not for teens to get their 15 minutes. That just seems really malicious though, she did that to a family member on purpose to get reaction. I couldn't imagine doing something like that to get attention...

I'm guessing the more entertaining 'reaction video' would be when that stupid (insert bad word) got told her car was being sold to help compensate for her stupidity.

It's clear that the 16 year old niece was more so attempting to fit into society by posting a not so funny prank which she'll be kicking herself for - for a while!

hmm if it is a mink coat (as it turns out it is), I can understand say, throwing blood at it, in an ecological or animal rights protest. (a) it can be washed, and (b) it's not permanent damage and (c) there's a point to the prank because it makes an ethical point. However, throwing paint just makes the dead animals' lives futile since they died to be turned into a piece of PVC. So in that case, not cool.

Hope you're getting the agreement in writing. Otherwise niece might pay a little and give up and then you'll be past the statute of limitations for legal actions.

I thought the child just awful then had to add mother. These two are so entitled what makes them so special that consequences don't apply to them. Awful people unfortunately this attitude is becoming more prevalent. Parents not doing right by their children personally if my child the consequences would have been a lot worse.

There is no excuse for bad behavior. And this is pretty bad. But some of y’all act like this kid should pay for the rest of her life.

Stupid for you not to know for insurance to pay out, they need to file a CRIMINAL report with the POLICE against the niece.

I personally think that your sister and niece are both A*s Holes! Both should have their SORRY asses BEAT DOWN, JAILED, AND SUED!!! There is N EXCUSE for what your Niece did PERIOD!! EVIDENTLY your niece feels ENTITLED to destroy people's property and get away with it and with no consequences at all. Your should " DISOWN their TRASHY asses from now on!"

Is that real fur? If it is, the woman needs a much more serious prank. People who support that level of animal abuse deserve to drink the paint.

ESH. I'm with everyone that the kid knew damn well she was ruining a $20k item and deserved a strong punishment. But suing a 16 year old over an overpriced coat that was a GIFT to begin with? OP is pretty lousy and entitled herself. Both of them are abhorrent.

But why is she acting like she bought the coat with her own money though? ”they should sell my niece's car and pay me back my money” It was a gift to her lmao!

Moral of the story ..... A family with tens of millions of dollars spends this much time and effort to keep a child's prank, which affected them financially or physically 0%, as a major Family issue even willing to cut family ties over it. A true story of money over family or better yet meaningless material items over family

If it were a fur coat I probably would have cut it up and took pictures of me mailing it to a wolf rescue where orphans can use them as bedding. Sounds fine to me.

NTA... In fact, this is criminal behaviour. I wouldn't sue her, but instead make her pay... And she is gonna payback. She wants views? Let's see how many she will get by being public humiliated in pornhub

Definitely NTA. But on another note.....Wealthy Ppl Suck ALLLLLLLLL The A*s. The only reason $20K coats exist is because there are over privileged dip shits willing to pay $20K for a coat. Eat the rich.

Your niece is an ignorant, rude, entitled brat desperate for attention. Your sister is a poor excuse for a Mother. You and your mother in law are disgusting for wearing a $20,000 dollar coat that I imagine some innocent animal was tortured horribly for. In case it wasn't fur and just cost that much so you can impress others with it then you are vapid and shallow. You all sound like repulsive people.

Process of elimination, it's a cashmere coat. Since u're so crazed, it's made from shaving the hairs from a goat. I guess u must have the longest of hair since getting a haircut is be torture for you.

Tell me you're out of touch with modern economy without telling me you're out of touch. IF you want golden threads shirt, you're looking at quarter million.

Believe it or not, destruction of someone's private property, regardless of its worth, is illegal. You not liking that doesn't suddenly make the law irrelevant.

This one seems fake to me. It's all based on how women are insane and emotional, and how men will come save the day with their reason and logic.

okay, I'm going to just skip over the actual root of the issue here and focus my commentary on This. " if you own a single item of clothing that costs $20K, whether it was a gift or you bought it yourself, you have a distorted view of reality." being the Ahole or not, i don't care. I will not feel sorry for you one iota.

I'm gonna go with ESH, yeah it was wrong to ruin the cost but.... Where does OP expect a teenager to get 20,000 dollars from???? That's some people's entire yearly salary. And OP is taking them to court if they can't pay it? What?!
