70-Year-Old Woman Tells Neighbors She’s Being Evicted, The Neighborhood Bands Together To Buy The House For Her

What comes to mind when you think about home? Is it the one you’re in now or is it a place from your childhood? Is there a particular smell or sight that you immediately envision? Regardless of what it may be, we can all agree that certain attachments are made to the place which makes us feel the most safe and comfortable. So what happens when it’s in danger of being taken away from you?

This was the situation a 70-year-old lady faced after her landlord announced that he’d be selling the house she called her home for over 18 years. But her neighbors were not going to let that happen.

Gather round the dinner table, dear readers, while I present you a story of hope and community spirit. Before we continue, though, please leave your thoughts on this story at the end and tell us what you associate with ‘home.’ Your upvotes and follows are incredibly appreciated! Now let’s dive into it!

70-year-old Linda Taylor felt like the world had been pulled from under her feet when the landlord of the house she’d been renting for 18 years terminated her lease

Linda Taylor rented a little white house near Powderhorn Park, Minneapolis, for 18 years. But in January, 2022, her landlord sent her a notice terminating her lease and asking her to move out by April 1. He wanted to sell the home where she raised her five children, leaving the 70-year-old retiree in a dire situation.

“This was not good,” Linda told Star Tribune. “I took care of this house every day. Every appliance I own. All the utilities for 18-plus years, I have paid for.” She initially owned the house, having bought it in 2004.

Although she bought the house in 2004, she got caught in a mortgage fraud scheme, making her sell her house. It was then purchased by her landlord

As told by The Washington Post, she started falling behind on payments and felt she was tricked into signing the house back over to the previous owner, who allowed her to stay on as a renter.

In 2006, her landlord was caught in a mortgage fraud scheme, and Greg Berendt, her current landlord, purchased the house. He raised her rent twice during the pandemic and let repairs and maintenance issues linger.

She worked at a local nonprofit organization for nearly three years before she was laid off during the coronavirus pandemic. Linda lost her paycheck but continued paying rent – about $1,400 a month – using her savings, money from family, and government subsidies including RentHelpMN, a program started during the pandemic to aid Minnesotans at risk of losing their housing.

He gave her 3 months to move out of the property, as he wanted to sell it, but she was determined to stay

When Taylor’s landlord told her to vacate, it was like “a stone had just dropped on me,” she said. “It felt like the world had been pulled from under me,” she continued. “My house means everything to me.” Although distressed, she was determined to stay.

She explained the situation to one of her neighbors, Andrew Fahlstrom, 41, who worked as a housing rights organizer. They’d had a lovely friendship with Linda ever since he moved into the neighborhood 6 years ago. “If we actually believe housing is a right, then we need to act like it, because the next stop is homelessness,” he said.

She confided in a neighbor who worked as a housing rights organizer, and the story spread quickly throughout the community that their beloved neighbor needed help

Soon, word got around that one of their beloved community members needed help. The neighborhood of Powderhorn is located just a few blocks down from George Floyd Square and, as told by neighbor Jenny Jones, most of the residents formed close bonds with one another during 2020’s summer of unrest.

The neighborhood wouldn’t be the same without Linda, the sassy grandma who spent a lot of time outdoors in her garden, chatting up everyone who came up to explore her Little Free Library. She’d always volunteered for the betterment of the neighborhood and now she was the one in need.

“We just immediately shifted into high gear and started meeting and trying to figure out a plan to help rectify the situation and ultimately allow her to stay in her home, which is what she wants to do,” Jenny said.

More than 400 people signed a petition, which demanded the landlord cancel the lease termination and start negotiations to transfer ownership of the house to Linda

“People listened to what Miss Linda was saying and wanted to do something,” Andrew said. “It was just such a clear and compelling story that everyone rallied for her.”

More than 400 people signed a petition which demanded the landlord rescind the lease termination and commence negotiations to transfer ownership of the house to Linda.

A neighbor wrote a column in Southside Pride, arguing that after paying more than $200,000 in rent over the years in addition to the cost of upkeep, Linda did not deserve to be displaced.

“The neighborhood’s being proactive in what they’re trying to achieve here and I give them kudos for that,” Greg said. “We’re not trying to cause any issues… We’re willing to work with her in any way we can for her to purchase the home. I’d like to see the home go to her.”

They won an additional 2 months of time, but they had to find ways to raise $250,000 for the home

Greg agreed to give Linda until the end of June to raise a mutually agreed-upon amount – $250,000 – before he would list the property publicly. A small win gave them more time but they had to act quickly and secure the necessary funds.

On April 1, the original date by which Linda had been asked to vacate the home, neighbors threw a block party in the street outside it. Music, dancing, and food was shared among the community, with signs saying ‘Stop evictions!’ and ‘Save Linda’s Home!’ uniting them in their cause.

Donations from the party as well as ongoing fundraising since mid-February through a campaign site and a fundraising page, bringing in donations in amounts of $5 to $15,000, resulted in a substantial sum, but not nearly enough to buy the house. “It’s such a crazy market right now. It’s not the greatest time for this, but it’s the right thing to do,” Jenny said.

The campaign website stated: “Miss Linda means so much to this community and has put her own love and labor into maintaining her house as her home. Her community and neighbors are clear: We will not allow her to be evicted and displaced!”

Block parties, art auctions and fundraisers ensued, but a donation of $200k by Longfellow’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church was what tipped the scale in Linda’s favor

The next thing they thought of was to host an art show at Modus Locus, where Linda would be auctioning off her paintings to add further money for the house. Pie & Mighty and Jakeeno’s offered to cater for the event at their expense and Brass Solidarity joined in to play.

Time was ticking, but Linda was grateful for all the effort her neighbors were putting in. “I still love my community no matter what happens,” she said. “I still love Powderhorn. I love my neighbors. They’ve been so good to me.”

As of May 31, a full month ahead of deadline, Linda officially closed on the house, with any additional funds covering repairs and utility bills

What tipped the scales completely in Linda’s favor was a donation of $200,000 by Longfellow’s Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, whose Stepping Out in Faith committee works on housing issues in south Minneapolis. This led them to raise $275,000 in three months. “When that came through, my faith grew bigger than a mountain,” Linda said.

As of May 31, a full month ahead of deadline, Linda officially closed on the house, any additional funds covering repairs and utility bills.

From a petition to copious donations from people who were touched by her story, this had become an incredible example of the great things people can do when they come together. “I’m not going anywhere now,” Linda said. “It’s saying a lot about my neighbors, and a lot about my community. Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.”

“I’m not going anywhere now,” Linda said. “It’s saying a lot about my neighbors, and a lot about my community. Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible”

“It’s a modern-day miracle,” said the Rev. Angela Khabeb, who thanked the landlord for having a change of heart and working with neighbors to close the deal. “People need to be able to walk by that house, and even if they gave $5, they know, ‘I helped Miss Linda stay in this house. We won.'”

This story shone light on issues people face daily, but it also brought forth hope that anything is possible when the community works together. “This is a really hard time in Minnesota,” Jenny told Star Tribune.

“We wanted to take a stand for our beloved community member staying here… but we will be continuing to meet and figuring out how we can keep our community together and what we can do to support others who might be struggling with rent.”

Image credits: Save Miss Linda’s Home

Jenny emphasized that Linda’s campaign started with her confiding in a single neighbor. “I know there’s a lot of people out there that are too scared to tell or don’t know what to do,” she said. “Tell people so we can help you.”

After nearly 20 years, the house was finally Linda’s to keep. “When it’s yours, it gives you a different type of feeling,” she said. “I’m safe, I’m secure, and I have a home.” She plans to continue hosting backyard barbecues, movie nights and lemonade stands with her grandchildren.

“I’m safe, I’m secure, and I have a home,” Linda said. After nearly 20 years, the house was finally hers to keep

Image credits: Save Miss Linda’s Home

Linda is determined to pay the kindness forward. “I’m here to help the next person and the next person and the next person. It’s been an amazing journey, and it continues on,” she said.

We hope that Linda enjoys her home for many more years to come and that anyone facing a similar situation is able to find solace and help within their community.

Right. Ppl who've fallen on very hard times and have received waited years to receive a section 8 voucher now can't even find a rental and eventually lose it and in turn become or remain homeless. Rising costs, good landlords no longer giving low income ppl a chance, slumlords making more $ than ever...not good. Hopefully, this doesn't bite the no-hassle renters in the rear...oh wait it already has!

This is how it should be. We can all work together and have at the very least the things we need to exist and be comfortable during our stay here on Earth. Helping people and caring about everyones welfare, including your own is extremely rare these days. People putting money and profit before human beings has never helped anything or anyone except the people profiting. Genuine things like this are what it's supposed to be about. Community, people, generosity, existing, helping, thriving, and making sure no one goes without the basics of what we need as humans to carry on until the end. Not money, greed, conditions, profit, exploitation, and only a select few thriving and living an enjoyable life. This story right here gives me hope for better for each and everyone of us. Unfortunately I believe to many folks have gotten use to how it is and a better future for us all looks quite bleak at this point.

My hope lays in today's young people. They have access to the entire world from their phone and they're engaged in what's happening around them to a level that humans have never had the opportunity to be in our past. They seem to be interested in and understand current events to a level I never did when I was young, not only in their own country, but regarding issues around the world. Even playing video games online, they're exposed to other cultures and beliefs, they make friends online all around the world, and they have a vantage point that humans have never before experienced. We've let them down terribly during our turn at the wheel; I have great hope that they will do better than we did.

I'm on the fence here.. the owner of the home should be able to sell their property. If the 70 year old doesn't want evicted she should buy the home and pay property taxes. Sorry.. its very expensive to pay property costs and the property owner has the right to sell their property.

I think you missed a really crucial detail in the post. It said she was CAUGHT in a mortgage FRAUD scheme that tricked her into selling her home. Had she not had some greedy group of people do that, she wouldn't have had to had this happen.

My family was evicted from our home back in early April of this year because the landlord wanted to sell the house. This put my family on to the streets, homeless as we were not prepared to be put into this situation so sudden. My family includes my fiance and her 2 children, ages 15 and 5 (we tragically lost her middle child, days before her 9th birthday in May of 2020) and our 2 year old pup. Having no vehicle we struggled to get our belongings into storage units and had to sell many belongings to pay for the units, to eat and to pay others for rides/help. I had camping gear and supplies so after the shock of being suddenly told to leave our home started to wear off my fiance and myself stayed in a tent after we first sent her daughter to stay with her Aunt and her young son with his father. We live in NC and it's been very hot but we managed to purchase an air bnb for less then a week as we try to make something happen but it's so hard and don't know if our luck will ever change.

Wonderful story. In the old days, the 1800 hundreds people helped each other out and it seldoms happens anymore. I moved to southern Oregon and bought a home with my VA loan but then got sick and had a difficult time of it. I didn't loss my home but lost my faith in my fellow man. When I needed help Klamath County and the people in it treated me like c**p. I moved here because I am a disabled Vietnam combat veteran and the county comes on strong about honoring veterans. Reading about this womans home is refreshing. Best wishs to all who helped her.

Well it said she bought the house in 2004, but didn’t elaborate further. She could have previously been a renter then to and made some kind of a deal with that owner like rent-to-own or something.

Conclusion, even after the whole ordeal there has been no effort to address the known defects like the rodents, the poor heating, the multiple issues, and have not once shown face at the house, owners brother keeps gardens on the property, which has restricted our full enjoyment and is not a condition on the lease, and who gardens at 9-10 at night or crouches in garden staring at the house. Just one more right trample on and I'm told I'm gon a deal with it as it's lawn maintenance and no notice is required, funny grass ain't getting cut, anymore cause we have done it before, but that's lawn maintenance, and they can do it if they wish to claim this as excuse for the intrusions. They gave notice, and expect continued payments for July and August, on a lease that's invalid and void, and refuse to remedy the issues, as they built in the lease, tenant must pay the quoted cost before any repairs will be done. That waives the landlords duty of habitability, invalidates everything.

Funded programs, broke tenant landlord laws, illegally collected rent under what is an expired lease, as neither of us tenants agreed to month to month, and they issued the intent not to renew 6 months after the expiration date, but collected rent as recent as this month, never once mentioned that the lease wasn't renewed, and they fail to recognize they were placed on notice of the complaints filed prior to issuing formal notice to vacate, which lease called for 61 day notice, notice filed mid month along with the good faith attempt to preserve our rights, effectively invalidates the notice, and is retaliation. They should not have accepted the funds, they should have proceeded with an eviction, I'd they never intended to permit the tenancy to continue, they should not have taken funds ment to prevent homelessness. And all their actions are consistent with fraud and discrimination, owner hates men and is open about it in her practice as a doctor here in Minneapolis. Continued

They claim he gave notice to vacate in March, but he never did, April they told him he was in eviction and the sheriff's would be coming to put him out, which was simply a lying attempt to self help evict. Which led me to contact them and lay the facts on them, they clearly spoke to their lawyer and found out I was right, and did the amendment in may to the lease that was expired January, March, april. yes three different dates at that time. They altered the terms which I signed that said June 1 2022, ironically the day the protections ended, accepted payments three times in the process including full payment for all unpaid balance, and again changed lease end date to Aug 31. All this I've documented Including emails where I'm told it's not my business, when I am addressing factors that the amendment would make me liable for, but they fail to realize the multiple violations they have committed, and don't seem to understand they have defrauded state and federal continued

The water bill kept going up under my roommates name til the change over in June amounting to $1600+ lien for the utility. All the time the rental company is bashing me and getting mad at me for taking a stand and holding them accountable, so June 12 I filed two complaints with A.G. Ellison's office listing the neglect of duties by the liable party, the illegal rent increase under a definitive lease, and various other issues as well as reported to the city in for the house to be inspected with me present to oversee this as this place in no way will pass. I also notified the rental company of the reports. So ultimately, the company misrepresented facts to get the funds from the assistance program, which came with the agreement not to take action for the months covered, yet the other employee of the agency told me by email owner don't want to rent to people who don't pay. So the whole thing is, lease expired in January, room mate was left to believe he renewed it in December, continued

As I said they got all rent in full June 13th, June 14th we are emailed notice to vacate, one of the agency's employees said landlord wanted the house for personal use, which is a bold lie as this house is the worse the Doctor owns, and has been neglected for the time I've been here going back 6+ years that my buddy and a friend of ours who was the prior tenant lived here. This place has major rodents, and there is no way this place was inspected in years but seems to have renewed license. Well I learned they had a clause in the lease that subjects the tenant to a $75 a month fine for each month a utility wasn't changed over when entering the lease. Logically that same fine applies to the other party whether or not it's specified, or the lease becomes invalid and all money paid is refundable. So I assessed them the fee for January to June, as well as the $100 a month increase to rent that was claimed to be for water bill change over totaling $1050. As well (continued next comment)

Well the program wasn't into allowing that, for reasons I understand. Ultimately they company Twin Cities Home Rental, first lashed out with Insults when I contacted them seeking to remedy the debt, and they first opposed it and than got back to me the next day saying owner agreed, and had me amend a lease they never showed me, and told me just skip fee submit app and hurry before funds ran out. Anyhow I did all this, under the presumption the lease was active and renewed on January. So that was may 17, I was approved for all the rent and utilities that were documented, and they issued payments, which the landlord got the funds June 13th as well as I paid out of pocket Junes full rent, and all fees included. They kept the water bill unpaid on the ledger but rose rent in January claimed owner took over water bill and paid all the bill off and was current. I learned the bill was still under my room mate up til June 7. Ultimately (continued next comment)

I am so glad to hear Miss Linda overcame this, I remember seeing her around many years ago before any of this and I remember when I heard of her troubling situation and gave anonymously an amount I won't disclose, but lost track of the story as my own hard times came to light, first evicted from White Bear Lake and wrongly accused of violation of drug covenants, and now find myself in Cooper neighborhood after a friend allowed me to take up staying here. I learned in March of this year he has fallen behind because he had stopped paying everything, and the rent and utilities be had passed $10,000 owned, I had previously applied for renthelpmn In 2021 at my last residence and had applied to in October of 2021 at this residence. I was denied around December appealed and restored app. I was applying as a subletting tenant of my friend, with being unable to pay him, he was unable to pay the landlord. (Continued next comment)

This was so beautiful. I believe that God wants us to take care of each other in this way. My memories of home as a child are filled with pain, trauma and lack. Lack of food, fun, and safety. I remember my mom suffering so much DV for us. We , my siblings and I put and end to it when I was seventeen. We stopped him from beating her. She went back to church and got back to God. My father improved but I've never gotten over what he did. I'm sixty and I still have nightmares about my childhood.

The owner has every right to sell HIS house. Maybe he had fallen on hard times, or maybe not but it's his house. Yes, she paid utilities for 18 years, she should, she was the one using them. It's sad but when you are a tenant you are renting a unit, you must realize it could be sold. No, I'm not a landlord but I am a Property Manager and the media is always painting the picture of landlords be the big bad rich wolf. Most landlords of single family homes are just average people that worked hard and saved money to be able to invest in a rental property. Since the pandemic, so many have lost everything because tenants haven't paid rent. They ha e had to still pay for their lives, and in many cases they lost their jobs too, but now they are forced to provide free housing for their tenants who don't pay their rent. It's so easy to be caught up in the media slanted view and rake the poor little old ladies side, but at the end if the day, without landlord, where would she be living.
