Welsh football star Gareth Bale, a winger for Real Madrid, made headlines (pun intended) during Euro 2016 when a bald spot briefly peaked out through his signature bun. A source close to him stated that he'd been using the man bun for 'a while' to conceal his thinning hair problem. This led to several other men trying this men's hairstyle out for themselves, with the results sometimes giving the illusion that they don't suffer hair loss at all.
Like most things, however, a man bun has to be done correctly, and the consequences can be dire otherwise. Pulling hair into a tight bun causes heavy traction on the hair follicles, which can damage them over time and cause even more hair to fall out, a condition known medically as traction alopecia. This warning doesn't just extend to men who are already managing receding hairlines, but to the hipsters who might be putting their prized manes at risk by cinching it all into a top knot.
The takeaway here? Rock your man bun, whether it's to hide a pesky bald head, or just for fun. Just make sure to tie it loose and low, and your follicles will thank you for it.

There doesn't seem to be enough hair on top to cover the bald spots. It is way too thin and yet with bun it looks so thick.Hmmm!
Well, I don't have any problem yet with bald spots in the middle of my head... But with time I started to have a Vegeta-like hairline... Or, let's say, more face to wash in the morning. So I decided for a bye-bye-hair solution.
Thanks for the heads up on this. Every time I see a 'head bun' from now on, I'll Know its a baldness thing, destroying someone's fragile sense of vanity. ;D

It is a very attractive and hip hair style on men, nice to know there is a practical use for it (anything to combat the toupee & long side comb over!!! lol ).
If your so self conscious then get a good wig or make it be fun and get a bunch of wigs and rock every out fit like a boss

Oh fercryinoutloud! Men go bald! It's normal. Instead of trying to pretend it's not happening, invest in a pair of #3 clippers and you won't have to live in terror that your bun won't hold up. These things look just as silly as the three foot combover or wearing a dead squirrel on your head. Own it.
Some of those guys need to just shave their heads. Accept when you're fighting a losing battle.
