Ex NASA Engineer Makes Everyone Freak Out When He Turns Sand Into ‘Liquid Soup’, And Here’s How He Did It
Former NASA engineer Mark Rober has found a way to make science just as (if not more) entertaining as Bill Nye did – by making sand behave like water. Not only did he document the entire process, he even filled his hot tub to have fun with it, and explained everything in an easily understandable and humorous manner along the way.
In his entertaining video, Mark explores what is known as fluidized beds, “a physical phenomenon occurring when a quantity of a solid particulate substance is placed under appropriate conditions to cause a solid/fluid mixture to behave as a fluid.” To make sand ripple and bubble like it’s a liquid, Mark used air. Basically, by blowing air into the bottom of a container of sand, he increased the space between individual sand particles, reducing internal friction and allowing the particles to move around more freely, the way they would in a liquid.
“I’ve wanted to build one for a long time,” Mark explains in his video. “But you can find literally NO information online on how to make one like that. So I started combing through a bunch of patent drawings for massive industrial-sized fluid beds, and I noticed that instead of one big inlet, they all had a bunch of small holes to deliver air.”
Starting with that in mind, it still took him 25 failed versions before arriving at his first working design. Watch the video below to see how everything unfolded and let us know in the comments if you’d like to dive in a tub of ‘fluidized sand’ yourself!

Basically, it’s a phenomenon that occurs when a solid/fluid mixture starts behaving as a fluid
It took Mark 25 failed attempts to get it right
But eventually, he fluidized the sand in his hot tub
And even his nephews joined the fun
Watch the video below to see how he did it
Wait tho, liquid sand yes, but not to bathe in...I don't want sand in my uh...
Load More Replies...Is no one going to point out that this just makes sure that the sand gets EVERYWHERE?
He's great. My son introduced me to him through his carnival games video.
The liquidized sand is the best story that I read & watched ever...I can't wait to show it to my grandson, who has the highest IQ among his friends & relatives...he'll probably say" yes, that of course; that all makes sense."
A principle has been used for may years in earthquake vibration tests...but without air introduced.... Hmm... you could make buildings or countries disappear on a large scale.......
no. quick sand is a mixture of water and sand, while this is air molecules pushing apart the sand molecules. they are alike in appearance, but very different when you look closely at them
Load More Replies...I wonder if it's still somewhat gritty though. That sand would get in EVERY CRACK lol
He has a great YouTube channel where he mixes great science with fun, you should check it out @ Mark Rober
Wouldn’t it get in your nose and lungs when you threw the boy into the sand?
U seems like a funny guy. Can I join in all the fun. I m a bored panda.
This is so way cool! I would love to have that experience, but what about the chance of the sand getting in somewhere? So, one day someone pushed me into a hot tub of water, and it got up my nose and down my throat, and it really hurt as I was choking it all out. What if it were sand? How do you get sand out of your trachea and out of your lungs and, in the very least, out of your nose? And what about the fact that we sweat, and the sand sticks to us? I guess you can prepare and protect yourself, but what happens if someone dunks you or you get involuntarily thrown in? Like that kid?
I’m wondering which tv crime drama is going to use this as a murder method first.
Coolest thing on the internet this month!!! Hands down and easily! Science is so sexy!!!
The mind that made it; apparently this comment doesn't apply to you. Good day!!
