Tired Of People Claiming That Gays Never Existed Until Now, Person Collects 31 Pics As Proof That They Did
Love is love and that's how it's been since the dawn of man. However, navigating social dynamics in the past was way more difficult than today. Same-sex relationships had been seen as a sin, repressed through law enforcement and judicial mechanisms, and even condemned with death penalties. Luckily, we now live in a time where gay and lesbian couples can legally marry. And to celebrate the increased well-being within these communities, a former priest who goes by the name Nathan Monk has compiled a series of vintage pics, showing how same-sex couples looked back in the day.

I am hetero but I would love this photo to be hanging on my wall <3 love it!!!
Who are these 'people' claiming gays never existed, or is it a trust me situation. Seeing that gay is an anagram of 'good as you' that was coined in the 60's I think..?
"I found these historical photos online through a couple of different posts," Father Nathan Monk told Bored Panda. "I shared them because I think it’s important to remember those that come before us, those that fought, and struggled to live their authentic life. I believe it’s important to be reminded that homosexuality have always been part of society and always will be. That reality should be lovingly accepted instead of shunned and ridiculed."
Same-sex marriages have been recorded all around the world. Throughout the centuries, they have existed in many forms, ranging from informal, unsanctioned relationships to highly ritualized unions. And even though the Old Testament prohibited homosexual relations (Lev. 18:22, 20:13), and the Jewish sages provide the reason for this as being that the Hebrews were warned not to follow the acts of the land of Egypt or the acts of the land of Canaan, same-sex marital practices and rituals were recognized in Mesopotamia.
This is cute :) They are beaming with happiness. This is now my new desktop wallpaper.
I kiss my friends on the cheek for photos quite often and it's not really gay.
same-when i had friends; they weren't gay or whatever either but it wouldn't matter...also, @John Lewis, stfu. Jim Neighbors was gay who played straight, moron
Load More Replies...His reaction makes me think it was more, I see lovers in the picture, not friends.
Load More Replies...Aw he looks so smug like yeah, I got a boyfriend and he treats me like a prince! I love them
Also, at least two of the Roman Emperors were in same-sex unions. The first one to have married a man was Nero. He is reported to have married two other men on different occasions as well.
The first man whom he married, Nero took the role of the bride, and later as a groom Nero married a young boy to replace his young teenage concubine whom he had killed. He married his second spouse Sporus in a very public ceremony, with all the solemnities of matrimony. A friend gave the "bride" away "as required by law." The marriage was celebrated separately in both Greece and Rome in extravagant public ceremonies celebrating unconditional love.
In fact, thirteen out of the first fourteen Roman Emperors are believed to have been bisexual or exclusively homosexual.
I'm not Gay, but since I believe that love has no boundaries, never has & never will!! I practically love this happy beautiful couple loving eachother as they profess their love & become just one on that special day despite the times!!
i, too, can be straight and care about gay/bi/etc people; wish everyone would be as accepting :)

Can someone explain the photo? Are there two brides marrying each other or one is marrying the groom woman? Or both are marrying the groom?
I think the woman holding the weeds is sppsd to be the bridesmaid.
Load More Replies...To me this looks like children/young girls acting in a play, one incorporating the groom, another one the pastor. I’m ok with gay marriages, but this isn’t one.
I had the same thought, looks like children/girls playing wedding.
Load More Replies...Later on, the increasingly influential Christianity promoted marriage mainly for procreative purposes. Teachings of the Bible (as well as Talmud and Torah), were understood as prohibiting the practices as contrary to nature and the will of the Creator, and a moral shortcoming.
After the Middle Ages, same-sex relationships in Europe were frowned upon and banned in many countries by the church or the state. And, even though we as a society have made huge strides in dealing with these social "leftovers," there are many things we still need to do.
they must have been kissing for a long time, cos cameras took ages to take a foto Still, it doesnt seem to upset them! =)
And they lived together for 50 years what could it mean
Load More Replies...Father Nathan Monk said that it’s important to acknowledge that people still face bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination. "Even though that is felt by all LGBTQ+, it is most dangerous for people experiencing poverty and homelessness. A trans person living on the streets is more likely to be rejected by shelter programs, more likely to experience physical and sexual assault, and so many other dangers. We need to continue to elevate these stories and realities until everyone has a safe place to call home."
And even though Father Nathan Monk is no longer a priest, he still devotes his time to making Earth a better place for us all.
"I am now the author of two books, Chasing the Mouse and Charity Means Love. Both books address the issues of poverty and homelessness. I currently operate a homeless shelter and an educational institute. On the weekends, I typically travel to different communities to discuss poverty and homelessness solutions."
This is totally beside the point, but I love and want those dresses/skirts.
Guy on the right: Heyo, this be my boyfriend. Guy on the left: Seriously, dude?
Looks like my Catholic HS uniform. We had blazers though, more modest. And ugly as poop. Smelt like poop too after four years too. And the shoes, they doubled as now shoes.
It must have been insanely dangerous for these young guys to express their love for one another. I can't even imagine it now.
Yes, I was struck by the potential danger of taking photos because you have to hope the person who develops them doesn't run to the cops or try to blackmail you.
Load More Replies...This reminds me of spanish poet Federico Garcia Lorca and Salvador Dali. ( yes, they had an affair).
Oh my, these hotties risked a lot taking this one in public, we can see some people staring at them. It was really dangerous.

It had to be difficult in the Navy. I did meet a sub sailor in the early 70's and I'm sure he had a difficult time. He was locked up with some guys that were hateful I'm sure.
Well it was dangerous for them. They could be court marshalled, losing not only their livelihoods and pensions but also the rest of their families and friends.

Might be because drag queens are pretty common, while drag kings aren't. Until 2 minutes ago, I also didn't know it even existed. So maybe the downvoters thought that it was a bad joke?
Load More Replies...Could be, but possibly still lesbian couples! Or not! No real way of knowing.
Load More Replies...I wish the author would have put more of the history behind these photos, so we know the context. The dresses are similar as are the suits. Are we sure these are not play actors at a women's college? Many actresses played masculine roles in those days, e.g. Sarah Bernhardt in the title role of Hamlet. Peter Pan has historically been played by a woman on stage and in film. Traditional operatic "breeches roles" include Octavian in Der Rosenkavelier, Hansel in Hansel and Gretel, Cherubino in The Marriage of Figaro. We've seen Kate Blanchett as Jude Quinn (Bob Dylan), Glenn Close as Gutless in Hook, and the inimitable Tilda Swinton as Orlando and Dr. Jozef Klemperer.
The girl/boy on the left doe... she/he pretty (i can't tell if they're drag kings lol)
actually this photograph was taken in Paris, where homosexuality was allowed but under advisement for public discretion
i grew up in a street rough & tumble neighborhood during the 60's & everyone knew our neighbour was gay
Either that or the one on the right has some very strange ‘do. Actually, the one on the right has a weird hairdo, regardless of gender.

Are these the same guys from the bathing suit picture? They sure do look similiar
I find this one interesting because Nazi Germany did not tolerate this at all.
S**t, i focused on that symbol. the eagle. ugh,
Load More Replies...That must've taken nerves of steel! So much for "there are no gays in the military".
Looks like they're like hurry up take the picture. Proud of these men and women who could Document their taboo love for us to see the change in the future.
DUDE, your comment made me look at the picture again and I almost dropped my phone XD
Load More Replies...I got startled by the person behind them. I can’t figure out what is going on there.
I wonder how many 'roommates' or 'good friends' were actually couples? I read an historical excerpt about a woman who was unusually distraught over the death of her landlady and I realized 'landlady' tells just part of the story.
Please, do share . Where did you read it ? Is it available online ? Lesbian and History buff here, so im interrested.
Load More Replies...Search for “Boston Marriage.” 19th century term for such relationships among between women.
There is something incredibly sad and unsettling to me about this photo. For some reason, I cannot escape the idea these two wonderful, smiling, loving people ended badly. Probably this is because unlike most of the couples we have seen here (outside of the military), these guys look like they come from a hard working class background. If you look closely, they have bruises, their clothes are in tatters. I cannot escape the idea that they romance ended tragically.
This looks like simple, true love & affection. Just... "Hey. Got my arms around my man. Life is good."
Sure is, I'm very familiar with older pics I must say they show so much compassion for each other that wasn't appropriate in photos in that era I respect the hell out of them. People need to stop making others feel terrible for who they love, who cares? No one should ever be raised to hate. Love is love.
we have being sexualy atracted to the same sex since we were on the trees meaning monkes and onkes do it dos do it and a lot of other animals do it as well
No one's ever seriously said gay people didn't exist until now. They've said they kept it quieter and it was less socially acceptable - which it was. I'm an ally, I don't want to tick anyone off, but this has never been seriously said. If people truly believed gay people didn't exist before x year - walk away, you're not convincing them to be a decent person.
Ppl should be glad *love* has always been around
Load More Replies...I'll never understand why someone would hate another because of their sexuality.
Exactly! I'm wondering exactly the same - who said that?
Load More Replies...The difference between then and now is that..then, in most countries, being gay was punishable by hanging because it was considered an offense to society....now, only a few oppressive and antiquated countries have outlawed homosexuality with some still administering the death penalty while others sentence them to life in prison. It will be great when we live in a world where all the phobias that cause one person to inflict harm on another out of fear are gone.
70. 70 countries have laws on their books against homosexuality. Let's not fool ourselves that this issue is even close to being in the past.
Load More Replies...Homosexuality has indeed been around since the appearance of homo sapiens. But to be fair I am not sure all of this pictures depict a homosexual relationship.
Of course there has been. People found different ways to get around it. My great grandmother had a "lady companion" to keep her company, travel with her. In photos, her "companion" is always standing behind her or gazing at her.
I have never heard that it is Millenials who invented LGBTQ+, but I have noticed that the terms used now have changed over time. It is well known and documented that there have been same sex relationships in humans for as long as there have been humans. It is only since the rise of the Abrahamic religions that it has been seen as something as sinful and wrong. I am not trying to criticize or disparage those religions or the people who follow them, but the notion of same-sex attraction as something that is wrong has only happened relatively recently in terms of human development. It is also only recently that society has started to attach labels to people, their relationships and lifestyles. I personally would be considered bisexual or pansexual but these are not labels that I would use myself. I think that the diversity, variety and complexity of human relationships make labels unnecessary and a little simplistic.
I wish I even had the opportunity to know all of that during my developing years, honestly. The access to knowledge was limited, biased, well controlled and intended for dictatorial propaganda. I was hoping the Internet would resolve these power excesses, but, to my utmost despair, controlling biased creeps are even stronger, pushing their agendas with money tainted algorithms. Anyway, well - c**p, let's see some smiling cats videos.
Load More Replies...Considering that most of these are taken from a time where it was illegal to be in a relationship with a person of the same gender/sex, all of these photos are of very brave people who knew that love is the only way to go. Let those who still have to fight for the right to love who they want use these as hope for their future.
Why did so many people feel the need to write 'I'm not gay' in their comments?
because they think if their straight and they support gay people they're better people
