Kristen Bell Starts Instagram Campaign Where She Fulfills Teachers’ Wishlists

Being famous comes with a lot of responsibility, but visibility can also put you in a position of power that can be used to do good. There are a lot of celebrities who use their famous names for good causes and Kristen Bell is apparently one of them. The Frozen star is using her Instagram to help teachers who are in need of supplies in their classrooms. The actor launched the campaign last year and was already able to impact many lives through the amazing initiative.

If you want to nominate yourself or a teacher to be featured on Kristen’s Instagram, send an email to featuredteacherfriday@gmail.com

More info: Instagram

Kristen Bell is running an ongoing campaign called “Featured Teacher Friday”

Every Friday, the actor features one teacher on her Instagram page as a part of her #FeatureTeacherFriday ongoing campaign. She shares the selected teacher’s story (Kristen has an email for applications) along with their Amazon wishlist with her 12 million followers. By doing so, the star urges people to help the teacher get the needed supplies. Earlier this month, Kristen shared Emily’s – a kindergarten teacher from Flint, Michigan – story. “Brooke emailed me to nominate her friend of 25 years, Emily. She told me that when they set up Emily’s classroom this year, she had little beyond tables and chairs and bought the rest of her supplies herself. SO! Let’s send Emily some love and support!” Kristen wrote on her Instagram.

Every Friday, she posts a story of a teacher who needs school supplies with a link to their Amazon wishlist

Emily’s story, shared by Kristen Bell, reads: “I’m a first-year kindergarten teacher at a small Title I school in Genesee County in Flint, MI. Being a Title I school means that a majority of our students live below the federal poverty line. Some of our families struggle to have their basic needs met. Although most of our students reside in the city of Flint, our school is located in a neighboring town. They ride the bus to school, with the earliest pickup being 5:58 am and the latest stop being close to 5:30 pm. These amazing kiddos spend the majority of their waking hours at school or traveling to and from school.”

Her most recent post is about Emily, a kindergarten teacher at Woodland Park Academy in Flint, Michigan

“This is just one of the many reasons that it is so important to make my classroom feel like a home away from home for my students. We call our classroom our ‘house’ and we are all family. Our rules and routines are centered around being good to each other and supporting each other the way families should. Our mission at Woodland Park Academy is to ‘Create Relationships to Change the World.’ For me, fostering these relationships means giving 100 hugs a day, checking in on older students on my lunch, telling students every day that I love them, and listening when they have something to say. It means never losing sight of how even the smallest act of kindness or understanding may change someone’s life.”

The teacher was nominated by her long time friend

“Our school is small and our teachers have some of the lowest-paid salaries in our area. Being a first-year teacher in an almost empty classroom has been challenging. However, every day we try to fill our classroom with curiosity, excitement, and love! Please know that any donations received will directly impact the lives of my little learners and I am forever grateful for the support!” Emily continues.

Just 2 days after Kristen posted Emily’s story, supplies began coming in from across the globe

“I just wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude for the outpouring of support and kind words that I have received over the last week. To say that the last week has been a complete whirlwind is putting it mildly. It has been so overwhelming (in a good way) and I am still in shock! I just wanted to make sure that you all know how amazing and wonderful I think you are! Please keep supporting teachers, supporting education, and most of all, supporting kids!” the teacher wrote on her Instagram page.

This is awesome, but it really troubles me that in the 21st century, citizens have to step up and pay (and spend so much personal time!) to do the job that government used to do. Our childrens' public school educations shouldn't be dependent on the kindness of strangers. (I graduated in 1990, and I can't recall ever once seeing a parent volunteer for anything during my 12 years of schooling, and certainly no parents bought supplies for the classroom.)

You're absolutely right. Upward mobility is dependent on education. Not funding public education will create a deeper divide between social classes, more poverty and will chip away at the middle class. These are our children, but also our society's future. Cutting funds to teachers and teaching is short-sighted, to say the least.

The way to properly fund these schools is to stop voting in the boot-licking politicians that are only interested in lining their pockets or the pockets of their BFF's. Stop cutting programs to the schools, healthcare and social services.

Also check out donorschoose.org you can direct money to a classroom of your choice, based on location, need, or other search options. It's a fantastic mission and hope this drives a couple people to check them out.

thank you Kristen. it doesn't fix the problem of funding but it certainly picks up the slack, and it's something you can do!

USA is such a bizarre place... Desperately tries to be seen as the best place to live in, but the more you see about actual living conditions there, the more it looks like one of the last places i would like to live. Every day i'm grateful i don't live there.
