James McAvoy recalls being bullied on the set of Band of Brothers
Although he made his screen debut in the 1995 film The Near Room, James McAvoy later formally studied acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now known as the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland).
After graduating in 2000, McAvoy landed the role of James W. Miller in the war drama series Band of Brothers. Set during World War II, the series follows the exploits of Easy Company, a battalion of the U.S. Army specializing in air operations.
During a recent appearance on Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live, McAvoy was shown a photo of his Band of Brothers castmates and asked about his time on the series.
McAvoy recalled joining the production nearly nine months into filming. He said the other cast members had relatively few lines, while his guest role came with substantial dialogue, which he believed led to some tension.
“They were all pis*ed. I come in for one episode, and I’ve got an arc and scenes. I’ve got tons of lines,” he said.
McAvoy said one of the actors pictured had bullied him on his first day out of acting school, when he was working as a professional actor for the first time after his graduation.
“He got him and his buddies to just stand pointing at me and laugh at me for like three minutes,” the actor added.
Fans speculate which famous co-star allegedly bullied James McAvoy
McAvoy rated his overall experience on the show 9/10, but admitted the first day was only a 2/10 because of the bullying incident.
Although McAvoy did not identify the co-star, his comments prompted fans to speculate about who was responsible.
The series featured several actors who had not yet achieved widespread fame. Among the names fans discussed were David Schwimmer and Donnie Wahlberg, both of whom viewers considered possible candidates.
“It was Schwimmer, wasn’t it?” one X user asked.
Another added, “I feel like it’s something Donnie Wahlberg would do.”
Several users suspected Schwimmer because of his fame from FRIENDS and the relatively limited dialogue his character had in Band of Brothers, particularly in the episode featuring McAvoy.
McAvoy ruled out Schwimmer because the actor wasn’t pictured in the photograph shown to him. The photograph instead featured Donnie Wahlberg, Kirk Acevedo, Scott Grimes, Neal McDonough, Adam James, Frank John Hughes, and Ross McCall.

Some fans were also frustrated that McAvoy described the alleged bullying but did not name the actor involved.
“What’s the point of telling us this unless he reveals who it was?” one person asked.
A second wrote, “If you’re going to bring up an event from 25+ years ago, name names or let it go.”
James McAvoy opens up about his experience on another early project
Following his appearance on Band of Brothers, McAvoy went on to star as Robbie Turner in Atonement (2007), a romantic drama that further raised his profile.
During a Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on October 9, McAvoy described a different challenge while making Atonement. Rather than dealing with hostility, he found it difficult to balance his need for privacy with the cast’s social life.
Directed by Joe Wright and based on the novel of the same name by Ian McEwan, Atonement was filmed with much of the main cast and key crew members staying together in a large house, including McAvoy’s co-stars Keira Knightley and Saoirse Ronan.
“There was a lot of fun socializing, not so much during the week, but on the weekends everybody would get together and have parties, and it was really cool,” he recalled.
Despite enjoying the atmosphere, McAvoy, then 28, felt “socially awkward” and wanted some time away from the group.
He eventually arranged to stay in a nearby cottage, giving him more privacy while allowing him to socialize with the cast on his own terms.
“Don’t tell Joe. But yeah, we had a great time on Atonement,” he wrote.
