I get this on a regular basis from one of my cats who spends a lot of time outside, on occasions more that 24 hrs at a time. When he finally deigns to come home he's usually starving, but always comes and rubs around me first, trilling his hellos and demanding lots of head rubs, for a couple of minutes before even checking if there's anything in the food bowl that he's had to walk past on his way in.
