80 Of The Coolest And Most Interesting Antiques These People Have The Pleasure Of Owning (New Pics)
Our Earth is full of treasures, some closer than we might even imagine. Take 53-year-old Malcolm Weale, for example, who, with his metal detector, unearthed an 18th-century gold mourning ring that is now exhibited in the British Museum. All you need is a metal detector, some patience, and dedication, and you can come across a little piece of history.
The folks at the r/Antiques subreddit would probably tell you the same. You can find the most stunning treasures in your grandma's house, at a local fair, or a garage sale. If you love old finds, you'll most likely love this list of items antique loves have shared in this dedicated community. Scroll away and be amazed!

My Great Great Grandfather’s Diary
What an absolute TREASURE was my first thought as well. Priceless.
Load More Replies...that is so cool. I have the letters my grandfather wrote to my grandmother when he was in the service in the '40s. he lied about his age so he could enlist. it was soon discovered and he was discharged.

that carving is impressive. because the bed was made in most likely the 19th-20th century, it’s definitely hand carved. great work!
Hello, This Is My Late Grandparents Ivory Chess Set
I would love to have that. I have two or three chess sets. But I Love looking at other chess sets. I would like to collect different chess sets. Wish I started when I was younger. Added. I dabbled in wood working. I would like to get good enough to make my own wood chess set with boards and pieces.

Hope and pray you are in the will. Not morbid, but that is a treasure that needs to be passed down through generations.
So many people who inherit a piece like this immediately sell it. Good on you for loving it and keeping it.

I Just Purchased A 1910 General Store!! I Plan On Returning It To Its Former Glory
Check out Chugwater Soda Fountain in Wyoming for ideas. Old school and still in operation. EDIT: 1916, and if you can find Chugwater chili mix, buy it. Milkshakes there are fantastic. I only know about it because my ex grew up there. Its like walking into an old five and dime.
I moved to a small town. There's several chain stores on the bypass, but in town, there's one store that's obstensibly a hardware store, but sells groceries (even fresh meats and cheeses), it's got a lunch counter, and pretty much anything you need around the house, so I told the proprieter how it's so cool to have a "general store." After calling it that for about the third time in front of him, he finally told me, "I opened this store myself after raising enough money having a family. You make me feel like a museum artifact." Ooops. Sorry.
Well, his type of store *is* something of an artifact, though that just makes his place that much cooler, in my opinion. I think the idea of a small town general store is excellent.

My Mom Bought This Beautiful Piece Of Furniture In Mexico
I would’ve been such a nervous wreck trying to get it back home intact, whether on my own—-which would probably not even be an option, tbh, because of the hassle at the border—-or using a professional mover. All those small details and pieces that require being shipped to me by someone who is 100% obsessive about carefully wrapping and cushioning it, then transporting it over the border in a vehicle that has the world’s best shock absorbers, then taking it off the truck carefully and getting it placed inside my home without any damage. I would pay extra for that kind of care.
I love that they put old books in here. Would have been so inappropriate to have it hold the latest novel or DIY edition. Fabulous piece of work it is!

Found Buried By A Tree In Germany
highly unlikely, usually if they survived, unless it was behind USSR lines, people went back to dig up old family items. My grandfather buried some items he recovered after the war.
Load More Replies...Most likely. The family probably buried it for safekeeping before being deported to a ghetto or concentration camp, or a looter did that to hide it. In any case, whoever buried it did not return for it.
Load More Replies...I remember when I was visiting Poland, a small town museum had a whole case of Jewish items, random stuff from table cutlery to Mezuza cases, that were found when they were digging a highway expansion. Random stuff from a Jewish family, that buried before being deported. Very sad when you find these type of things
I admire Polish people for their courage and what suffered though History, but fail to explain their hate for Jews, even after WW2 and their last pogrom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kielce_pogrom
Load More Replies...It's not a menorah per se, as they have seven arms. This has nine arms, hence it is hanukkah menorah / hanukkiah.
It is a Menorah, bc a Chaukah Menorah is called a Menorah as well and has been for at least 1800 years in Jewish writings. Chanukia is a word created in the 1800s and isnt commonly used outside of Israel, and even in Israel, not by religious Jews

crusoe:
These were kinda like wallets back then. The early form was a series of small oval trays suspened on coards, each oval had a hole in each end and the trays threaded over the cord, with it loop across the bottom of the last tray. There was also a oval lid on top. By loosening the top knot/slider/bead the trays could be separated. At the very end of the cord would be the netsuke, a very large bead. The inro cord was not tied around the sash/belt, but simply tucked under it, with the netsuke pulled through and sitting on top. Its size prevented the inro cord from simply falling out.
Inside a man might put medication, powders, snuff, pills, flint and tinder for fire starting, whatever he might need.
This one is possibly post the time Japan was opened up to the west, and instead of trays it has drawers. This was probably worn by a fairly well off man who at the time would be wearing a blend of western ( Often a hat and cane) and Japanese dress.
Netsuke are wonderful... Kimonos/yukatas didn't, but did have sashes. You kept your small carry about valuables in a small cloth pouches with a cord closure. the cord had a netsuke on it. you'd pass the cord of the pouch under and up the sash. The netsuke would keep the pouch from sliding back through the sash.. The were often carved from wonderful materials in fantastic shapes.
I could immediately tell it was Japanese before reading the paragraph just from the amazing craftsmanship
Left Behind (By Previous Owners, Deceased With No Family)
Mom brought it to a jeweler who said it’s gold with diamonds. The two big ones are a karat each. Mom originally thought it was fake and was going to give it to the grand-babies for dress-up. California, United States
Looks a bit like a blend of Edwardian and Art Deco styling. And probably quite valuable. There is a site I peruse when I'm enjoying a particularly jealous fit of curiosity shows a few somewhat similar pieces as brooches but none as rings. This is definitely unique.
Just because it’s not a current style and considered ugly does not mean it’s fake. Lots of fine jewelry sold in yard sales for a buck.

Found This In An Elevator Shaft In An Old Hotel In Ireland. These Worth Anything?
ElbowDeepinanImgur:
Hi OP! I restore these cash registers as a hobby! What you've got is a National Cash Register from around the 1910s. They're worth a couple hundred bucks in that condition, mostly because they can still be restored despite how bad it looks. There are collectors who make their own replacement key labels, cut new marble for the coin shelf, and source replacement original parts for the bits and bobs that have gone missing. A fully restored register like that one generally sells for between $700-900 depending on how well they're cleaned up. In all honesty, the brass is dirty but it looks like it's in great condition. Something you can do is pull the drawer completely out (there's a release rod in the back of the paper bill compartment) and flip it over. Oftentimes the receipt is still pasted to the underside, since this was a standard NCR practice. It will tell you the date it was purchased as well as the business or person who paid for it. Great bit of history!
... when you realize that the company that made a lot of those was International Business Machines. They got slightly more famous by the 1970s making computers, until they told Bill Gates, "you keep ownership of the operating system."
Load More Replies...Found in an elevator shaft? Maybe a robbery then disposal of the evidence. After cash removed of course.
I went to a place that is a gift shop/tiny museum called The Umbrella shop in Tasmania and they were still using a cash register from around this time.
Good idea, tbh. Internet goes out? Cash register still works. Power goes out? Cash register still works. You just need to be bike to count back change, because they won’t tell you how much to give a customer who does more than the exact amount. Good basic math skill to have, in my opinion.
Load More Replies...I love; the restoration description even more than I love the register. I had a friend who ran an old general store in the backwoods of KY in the 50s-60s and he had the most *wonderful* cash register. All marble and brass liked this. I fell in love with it.
i went to a museum in indiana a couple years back. there was one specific room i remember that was just lined with vintage cash registers from the late 1800’s-1950’s. they were all wooden. unlike the one you pictured, but all of them were still stunning and interesting to observe. i loved that museum; thank you for bringing back a memory!
maybe the one you pictured is made of wood, but not the dark, deep brown wood i’m imagining. sorry for the mishap.
Load More Replies...I have one exactly like this in my living room. They're pretty special, mine is from 1914, which was the last year National made registers out of brass (then brass was diverted to the war effort [WW1])
Coworker Gave Me A Lamp, The Shade Is Uranium Glass!
It's pretty. I checked, Uranium glass does contain uranium, but in very small doses. It shouldn't harm you in decorative items like this lamp.
I’d put it in a less precarious spot. The value is in the fact that the glass is in tact
I second your comment. I collect uranium glass (the animal figurines are my interest), and the value takes a nosedive if there are cracks or breaks.p, so you have to store or display it on/in something solid that will not topple.

Load More Replies...on the side of the road? are you sure it wasn't advertising an antique store?
Ive been seeing this "free" stuff in my area a lot lately! Idk if its been common elsewhere but normally people take their unwanted items to our thrift store, which is resold to shoppers in the neighborhood or pitch them here. Where i live (small place) there is a very wide range of income. We have quite a few struggling but about equal amounts of "very well off" i love that they are cutting out the middle man and just sharing. Like people who are in need of something can get just about anything free/as needes from those in abundance here without having to even ask. This is how ths world should be. No one tells them to, no one makes them...its just kindness.
Small Walnut Shaped Sewing Kit USA
The only info I have is that my uncle (65m) gave it to my dad (75m) and stated it was with their mothers things when they cleaned the house after her passing and they believe it was her mothers. Chapstick for size.
Looks like a traveling sewing kit, for emergency button replacement or for fixing small tears
They were intended to be hung from a chatelaine, a clasp with chains hanging from it that was worn on the waist. They held things such as keys, a sewing kit, an aide memoire, scissors, etc. and were worn by the 'woman of the house' in wealthy households. Less ornate versions would be worn by the head housekeeper.

Took the words out of my mouth :) The monetary value means nothing. It's gorgeous.
Load More Replies...There's an identical one on eBay for 249 quid. I wonder if it's this one. They've described it as Victorian, which is isn't, as Vicki was dead by 1905.
pretty sure my grandma also had one of these gorgeous little side tables!
The term 'fiddleback' in the description is not a reference to shape (as opposed to fiddleback chairs, which have the central splat shaped like a violin body) but to the wood veneer, which is highly polished to resemble the finish on high quality violins. The table in the picture hasn't been polished properly for a long time, though, and the damage to the veneer on the top pretty much kills any value it would have had.

I don't want you to get too excited, OP, but your guy has his own Wikipedia page. AND here's a picture of him wearing a similar set!
I looked at the Reddit post and they don’t just have a hat. They also have the epaulets and uniform coat
Looking closely it was made by Gieves (established 1785) and is from the 'military tailor' to the Royal family (the royal warrant can be seen inside the hat)
In all fairness having a wiki page doesn't mean much. I have one and I have done nothing of note except being a big brother housemate for three weeks in 2007. (No, I didn't set it up)
Admiral's ceremonial cocked hat. Highly valuable if traced to an important historical figure, as this one has.

It's an Art Nouveau bronze box, made around 1900-1910 and possibly German or Austrian. It's lockable so likely a jewellery box. It would have been very expensive new and is highly collectable now. If it's an original piece it will be worth several thousand pounds/dollars/euros, but there are a lot of very convincing fakes around that were - and still are - made in China, so it needs expert appraisal.
I love anything with dragons on it (and a hydra is close enough to a dragon for me to want this box)
Aren't those usually made from wood?
Load More Replies...Edwardian, early 20th C. Silver. Seeing the silver mark would be handy.
It isn't silver, although it might have originally been plated. There's verdigris on it; if it were silver it would oxidise black, not green.

This is my first one of these Warner’s Safe bottles. I heard that they had to stop embossing “cure” on it and instead embossed “remedy” in 1906 (USA).
I have a picture of an ancestor selling these type of patent cures out of a covered wagon. The canvas sides advertised his product as Miracle Cures. Funny to think about a time when people in rural communities were so desperate for medical care that they bought this stuff based on unproven claims by traveling peddlers

Lowest I’ve paid was $100 but that was half priced because the shop was closing down. Moreau pieces can range in value but the lowest I’ve ever seen them is $200. I think yours is worth a bit more than that. You could potentially get it appraised to know if it’s one worth a few thousand or a few hundred. The dresser can still be found in many shops. The mirror is a rare find!
I had a dresser just like this, without the mirror, growing up. My Mom 'antiqued' it with pink paint! I stripped it down to the original finish.
It has a certain charm, but the grain of the wood is coarse, compared to effect that the decorations are striving for, and the twiddly bits look stuck on after.

USA- I Have An Opportunity To Buy This Piano For $200
How is it so many people on BP think the original posters on Reddit can see their comments. The internet is a cool place but not a miracle worker
When I was new to the site I didn't know everything came from other places
Load More Replies...It’s pretty but this is from a comment on Reddit, he put it better than I could “ Hi, pianist here. No serious pianist would buy this to play. Yes, Steinway is a top piano manufacturer in the world, however square grand pianos are essentially obsolete. Their design is convoluted, they’re horrible to work on and a pain in the but to tune. A restorer could bring it back to playing condition but the sound would not be optimal. As a decoration, sure it’s worth $200 if you have the space to display what’s essentially an oversized paperweight. Outside of that they are unfortunately relatively worthless, even the ones made by Steinway.”
The piano might cost $200 but transporting and having it tuned will likely cost much more
there’s a 1700’s piano in my town that was once owned by a relative of george washington. i wonder if it still works. probably not, but that’d be neaaat
looks like it could it use a good cleaning and tuning. Anytime a piano is moved it has to be turned. I learned that from a relative that has a piano.

Believe it or not, pieces like this have almost no financial value. A lot of people assume that any item of antiquity must be valuable but it's often not the case. A small alabaster head, damaged as this one is and missing the entire body, can be bought for under £100.

AI to the rescue! Google Gemini, 2.5 Pro: It's a 17th-century English legal document, known as an indenture. The script is a form of cursive called "Secretary Hand," which was common at the time. It uses many abbreviations and non-standard spellings, which can make it challenging to read. The document states that Edward Lloyd had previously granted (enfeoffed) this property to Henry Bedward. Now, Henry Bedward is formally renouncing and "quitting his claim" to the property, transferring all rights, title, and interest back to Edward Lloyd, his heirs, and assigns forever. This ensures that Edward Lloyd has full and undisputed ownership. -actually it gave a full transcription, but it's obvs. too long for me to copy.
Calligrapher here. Secretary hand was invented for writing at speed by reducing the number of pen lifts. To do so it added a lot of bows and ligatures. It's also a pain in the a*s to learn to do properly. Technically, secretary hand isn't cursive, but it's close.

Since spelling of English words wasn't really codified at the time, there could be all manner of expressions and phrases let alone words that will be difficult to decipher.

My boss is 43. I left him a note in cursive recently and he complained he couldn't read it at all. For the record, my cursive is pretty clear. He called it 'doctor's writing'.

Saw This In An Antique Shop
Antique sideboard. Huge and heavy. Many of them were built inside the houses they were in, so when the family moved or died off and the houses were sold, the sideboards and other similarly built furniture could not be removed because of their size, unless you were willing to remove both the room door and the house door, plus a section of walls around each of them. Taking the furniture out was not an option because it was so solidly built.

I don't think so, baby spoons are generally a single spoon with a matching knife and fork, and sometimes a pusher. Coffee spoons maybe.

What On Earth Is This Used For, Cause My Mind Is In The Gutter?
The object in the image appears to be a vintage electric massage vibrator, possibly originally marketed as a "hair dryer" or "bath accessory" due to its design and the type of case it comes in. This type of device was designed for applying pressure to specific body areas for relaxation and relief from muscle soreness and tension. Vintage models often came in a case, sometimes with a red velvet lining, similar to the one shown in the image. These devices were intended to provide health benefits such as reducing stress, relaxing muscles, and improving circulation. The design, with a handle and a rounded head, suggests it was meant for handheld use to massage various parts of the body.

i moved into a 1970s house (i know, not that old) with my family in 2019, and we’ve had terrific finds. beautiful floral kitchen wallpaper, antique board games + a beautiful wooden chest. my grandma lived next doors and she gave me a purse from the 80s and 2 painted turtle figures plus a painted crab figure, all coming from mexico. this house has many downsides to it, sadly. we’re planning to move out within the next 2 years.
With Antiques Roadshow telling us "brown is down" in furniture, now is the time to buy if that's what you like. I'm looking for wardrobe, drawers below, cabinet above.
"We're living in the future!" If you like minimalism, sure, but don't tell me we never have been innovative.
