When we’re children, the world feels full of mystery, imagination, and things we accept without question. Many of us believed in things that seemed completely real at the time—whether it was something our parents told us, something we heard from friends, or something we simply assumed was true. As we grew older, we began to see things differently and realized that some of those beliefs weren’t actually true.

I have no idea WHY I believed this, but I thought grandparents were people your parents chose to be in your life. Like, when you were born they went through a bunch of applications from older couples and picked the one that appealed to them most. I remember when I was 5 or so asking my parents why they chose granny and grandad and my tiny mind was blown to discover they were my dad’s parents.

That people are inherently good. When I was in college doing intro to psych (70s) the opinion seemed to be that people are, by and large, good, that aberration was "learned". As I have gone through life I have figured out that the opposite seems to be true. People seem to only seek their own comfort, without caring about the well-being of others, even perhaps in their own circle of relationships. It seems that only when faced with the pain that is brought on to others by their inaction will they respond in a positive way. It's heartbreaking to know that people will (figuratively) turn up the TV to avoid hearing pleas for help, or to blame politics when the issues aren't necessarily bound by continent, country, or even region.

That adults had everything together and knew the answers. In reality, many just learned the art of acting convincingly and/or blaming somebody else for their misfortunes.

I remember standing at the window in the middle of the night, staring at the stars. Looking for the magic dust and the red light. Hoping I didn't miss seeing him. Running from my bedroom to check the glass of milk and the cookies I had laid out for the big guy on this Christmas Eve. I miss those nights and the innocence I had. 😢 😊

That it was against the law to own more than two cars. I was two and my sister told me that when we traded in our old car and bought a new one. I believed that longer than I believed in Santa Claus.
