It's a giant cat that roams the country and eats anyone who has not recieved new clothing to wear before christmas eve, iirc. It's called Jólakötturinn. I may be wrong though, as I'm not Icelandic. (I dream of visiting someday though!)

It might not be a great picture, but it has a funny story. Every year since the early 1900s, the same tree has been lit up in a big celebration (well, big for a town of 300 people). It celebrates winter, but it is on the first of November to escape the frigid temps and huge amounts of snow that we have from the solstice to spring. Anyway, the point is that the tree we have been lighting up for over 100 years got diseased and had to be cut down. This year, instead of lighting a large tree, we voted to light a tiny sapling that is around 8 ft tall (2.5 m).
