94 Creative Halloween Costume Ideas You Might Want To Steal For Yourself

One of the best things about Halloween is that you get to be whoever you want for a night. Want to dress up as your favorite movie character? Go for it! Feel like turning yourself into a giant slice of pizza? Nobody’s stopping you.

But have you ever wondered how dressing up became such a big part of Halloween in the first place?

To find the answer, we have to go back more than 2,000 years. Halloween has its roots in an ancient Celtic festival called Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter.

People believed that around this time, the boundary between our world and the spirit world became thinner, allowing ghosts to wander the Earth. As you can imagine, that wasn’t exactly a comforting thought.

So, how did they protect themselves from these unwanted visitors? One belief was that wearing disguises could help people blend in with the spirits. Some dressed up as frightening creatures, hoping to avoid attracting attention from anything supernatural.

Of course, these early costumes looked quite different from the elaborate outfits we see today, but the general idea of dressing up stuck around.

Over the centuries, the celebration changed as Celtic customs mixed with Christian traditions. November 1 became known as All Saints’ Day, and the evening before it was called All Hallows’ Eve, which eventually gave us the name Halloween.

Later, Irish and Scottish immigrants brought many of their traditions to America, where the holiday gradually grew into the celebration we know today. And as Halloween became more popular, costumes started changing too.

Speaking of traditions, here’s a fun fact about those glowing pumpkins we see everywhere. They weren’t always pumpkins! According to the Library of Congress, people in Ireland originally carved frightening faces into turnips.

The tradition is connected to a folktale about a man called Stingy Jack, who supposedly tricked the Devil and ended up wandering the Earth with a burning coal inside a carved-out turnip.

When Irish immigrants arrived in America, they discovered that pumpkins were much easier to carve, and the familiar jack-o’-lantern eventually became a Halloween favorite.

And pumpkins aren’t the only Halloween tradition with an interesting past. Trick-or-treating also has a surprisingly long history, with roots in older European customs of going door to door asking for food.

In Scotland and Ireland, a practice called guising involved children dressing up and visiting homes for treats. However, the modern American version of trick-or-treating really took off after World War II, when candy became more widely available.

Halloween has certainly come a long way since its early days. Nowadays, even our pets get to join in on the fun!

According to a 2025 survey by the National Retail Federation, 23% of Americans celebrating Halloween planned to dress up their furry friends.

And if you’re wondering what the most popular pet costume was, it was a pumpkin! Hot dogs and bumblebees were also among the favorites.

All this Halloween fun comes with a pretty hefty price tag, too. According to the National Retail Federation, total Halloween spending in the US is expected to reach a whopping $13.5 billion in 2026, with around $4.4 billion going toward costumes alone.

In fact, the average consumer plans to spend around $115 on the holiday this year. That’s quite a bit of money for a celebration that lasts just one day!

But you definitely don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy Halloween. Sometimes, the best costumes are the ones you put together yourself with a little creativity and whatever you can find at home.

Whether you’re planning an elaborate outfit or something simple and funny, the most important thing is to have fun with it. So, we hope these costumes have given you plenty of inspiration for this year’s celebrations. Happy Halloween!
