Getting close to someone means they eventually get to see the version of you that the rest of the world rarely gets. You might be sillier, messier, more emotional, quieter, or completely unfiltered around your partner because you know you are in a space where you can let your guard down.

The American Psychological Association notes that self-disclosure can help create closeness and intimacy, which makes sense when you think about how relationships deepen as you let another person see more of who you really are.

    That's a crime against cleanliness.

That feeling of comfort is one of the lovely things about having a partner. You don’t have to look perfectly put together every waking minute, and you should be able to have your lazy days, weird habits, embarrassing moments, and completely unhinged thoughts without feeling like you are auditioning for the role of perfect human.

But feeling comfortable with someone doesn't mean forgetting that another person is sharing the space with you. A healthy relationship still leaves room for respect, boundaries, and consideration.

You may be happy doing something a certain way, while your partner finds it irritating or uncomfortable. That does not automatically mean either of you is wrong. The NHS explains that healthy relationships involve accepting differences, listening to each other, and making sure both people’s needs matter.

This is where knowing your partner becomes important. If they have told you that a particular habit bothers them, constantly doing it because “they know the real me” is a pretty weak excuse. Being yourself shouldn't mean making the other person repeatedly put up with something easy to change.

Healthy boundaries help partners understand what makes each person comfortable, while also making room for individuality, and that balance can prevent little annoyances from turning into much bigger resentments.

Of course, getting comfortable with your partner does not mean you have to stop caring about basic hygiene. You can spend the day in pajamas, skip makeup, eat dinner in bed, and generally let yourself relax, but a few standards are still worth keeping.

According to the CDC, good hygiene helps protect your health and the health of the people around you, especially when you share a home. Being comfortable with your partner is great, but keep the toothbrush, soap, clean clothes, and home care in the rotation too.

AKA "wofflestomping" according to Bodkin's son, a thing I wished I never had to learn about or hear the term for 😭💀

Basic personal care is part of everyday life, whether you are single, dating, married, or living with a houseplant that has no opinions whatsoever. Cleveland Clinic includes bathing, dental care, grooming, and toileting among the basic activities people do to care for themselves and stay well.

Your partner doesn't need you to be polished 24/7, but expecting them to tolerate poor hygiene because you are “comfortable” shows a lack of respect and basic decency.

People can also take cleanliness too far. What feels perfectly normal to one person might drive their partner up the wall, especially when they grew up with completely different routines. One person thinks leaving their clothes on the chair for a few days is no big deal, while the other is already wondering when that chair became a wardrobe.

And when these little differences start getting on each other’s nerves, it actually helps to talk about them.

I've said this one before, but it bears repeating... I have 6 cats and a dog. One of my cats, Lucanis, recently had urinary crystals and started to peé outside the litterbox. I cleaned up every spot immediately with enzymatic cleanser, got him to the vet ASAP, and got him on a prescription diet and medication. He doesn't pée outside the litterbox any more. Not only is that kind of stuff gross and smelly and unhygienic for humans, it's not fair to the animals either to make them live in a home where they're forced to go to the bathroom on the floor/carpet (either because they're not trained/housebroken or because the humans never take them outside/clean their litterboxes.) It's nasty for the humans living there, and unfair to the animals as well.

I adore my husband but I do NOT need to be in the bathroom doing anything while he poops. Neither do I want him in there with me. Unless we're sick or need help, that's private time in my opinion.

“What’s with the huge pile of clothes?”
“Cause then we can share them, so when we take off our clothes we chuck them on the pile then the next day we just grab them from the pile”
“Why don’t you just put them in the wash?”
“Because then we all get a few wears out of them before doing it cba”

The guys I used to work with would eat fried chicken (KFC) that had been left out on the table since the day before. I'm amazed that none of them got sick.

He p**d at work and wouldn't shake it off. I saw marks on his underwear and asked and he told me that they shouldn't leave their post for too long so he sometimes p**s in a hurry and that's why there's marks on his underwear

Mint toothpaste is overstimulating for me, so I tend to use the kid's bubblegum/"sparkle" flavor. Makes brushing my teeth much more bearable for me.

We'd need more context for this. Was he sick? Really drunk? Did he not clean it for days, or did he clean it up the next morning/when he was feeling better? If he was sick, did you not help him?

I used to game a lot in my 20s. I was once a part of an "army" guild for Battlefield 2 that would have pretend "battles" with other "armies" online in the game. The battles were planned out and would take hours, plus our army had hours of practice in the days before any given battle. You were expected to be present through the whole battle, even if your unit was not currently deployed/fighting on the map. We used to all joke with each other about using adult diapers for the battles, because we were supposed to be there for the whole battle in case we got called in suddenly. The actual reality is that we were all rational people who knew that people needed to GO to the bathroom when they needed to go, so no one actually got mad if you said "bio break, brb" and ran for the bathroom. There is NO reason for "pée bottles" while gaming, even in FPS/active games - you WILL get kílled at some point and you can go pée while you're waiting for your respawn timer to count down.

Based on a lot of these posts you're lucky they're even brushing their teeth in the first place! 😂
