Humans tend to seek comfort, and we often achieve much of it with the help of our technologies. One of these more recent inventions is autocorrect—something that most of us are very familiar with.

But that which is supposed to help us doesn’t always perform according to expectations. At times, it does correct our mistakes, but, as one Redditor recently shared, it may also cause them. When the guy met the girl of his dreams and things seemed to be going well, he couldn’t be happier. But one fateful morning, an auto-correction of a single word sent it all out the window. Scroll down to read the full story!

They really hit it off, and after a few dates, she opened up to him about being teased for her weight in the past

The following day, the guy wanted to send a good morning message to the girl, but the autocorrect changed the word “darling” to “fatling” without him noticing

The girl felt very offended and refused to listen to any excuses, closing all the doors on their relationship and leaving the guy devastated

The beginning of the story is nothing unheard of. The OP met a girl whom he immediately fell in love with. He found her smart, funny, successful, and very beautiful.

A few dates in, things were going super great, so the girl decided to share her insecurity about her weight, which she had been teased about since she was 13 years old. While the story might not have been fun, being entrusted with it made the poster feel even better than before.

The next morning, the guy woke up pumped about where his life was going. He took his phone and sent what he thought was a “Good morning, darling” message to the girl he was dating. But when he picked the phone back up and saw an angry message, he re-read his own text and realized that the autocorrect “fixed” it to “fatling” instead of “darling.”

No attempts to mend the situation seemed to improve it. The girl flat-out refused to hear anything the guy tried to justify his message with, so his chances were lost.

The commenters had mixed reactions to this post. Some told the OP that he should always double-check what he sends or argued that the girl should’ve understood the situation and given him a second chance. Others were really taken by the irony of the whole situation and couldn’t stop making puns out of it—a game that the OP himself joined.

Most of us are probably also very familiar with the situation of having our texts drastically messed up by autocorrect. Usually, it’s not that big of a deal, as when we notice it, we can just correct our mistake and laugh it off. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.

Still, in this modern day and age, where everybody occasionally runs into situations like these, surely people wouldn’t take a once-off thing like that too seriously, would they? Would it be too much to expect that perhaps there is still hope left for the OP?

Well, as u/thedudeLA told us when Bored Panda reached out to him for some additional questions, his story hasn’t had any more developments since it was posted on Reddit. While we do keep our fingers crossed for the poster, it seems that this might’ve been a rare case where something like this truly was enough to mess things up completely.

Still, with all that has happened, the OP was glad that people found his story to be so entertaining and enjoyable. “I was driving to work and reflecting on the situation, and as much as I [messed] up, this story was so absurd, it made me laugh,” shared the author, thinking back on how he came to post it online. “I always thought the funny TIFU stories were the best, so I shared mine.”

The OP realized that he could not take this back, but he could use it as a life lesson that might ensure no similar misfortune befalls him ever again. “Always double-check text messages before sending,” said the poster, echoing the advice given by one of the commenters that must’ve been engrained deep in his mind by now.

To sum up, technology can make our lives much easier. However, no one ever said that it doesn’t make mistakes, either. Looking at this story, perhaps the wisest thing that we could learn is that using these technological creations can give us a great advantage, but we should never rely on them 100%. Ultimately, just like with almost everything else, balance is the key.

Ah yes, the tall, Eastern European woman who looks like a model "but" with boobs and a*s. Oh, and the cherry: she has self-esteem issues so he had a chance. R/thathappened

Surely you don't mean to imply that the person OP was corresponding with wasn't 5'10", wasn't Eastern European, didn't look like a model, and maybe wasn't even female?

In what world is fatling a real word, such that it could possibly be replaced by auto-correct? None, is the answer. I could accept the possibility of a simple typo, but even then it would have to be a special sort of person who read it as a genuine insult rather than a mistake.

I just tried to test this (in a text to my bf, who would just laugh if I sent him a text that said "fatling") and I typed in the two things OP said they think they might have typed: datling and farling. Both got autocorrected to "darling". I then typed in "fatling" directly and it also got autocorrected to "darling". The only time it lets me actually keep the word "fatling" without forcing an autocorrect is if I type "FATLING" in allcaps. So unless OP was texting, purposefully in allcaps, "GOOD MORNING DARLING", then... yeah XD Probably did not happen as an autocorrect. I'd have believed it if OP said they had autocorrect turned OFF and then they mis-typed it, but in no universe can I imagine any word getting autocorrected to "fatling".

GROVEL. Immediately, and as long as it takes to get her real attention. The language difference is THE problem here - she'll have difficulty knowing you are not jerking her around. Then - have a friend of yours - a woman - explain the horrors of autocorrect. YOU can't do it. She'll need outside confirmation. Somewhere in there, if she's worth it - she'll figure it out. Best wishes.

Grovel, yes, but not "as long as it takes". She has the right to turn him down; even if the reasons were originally a misunderstanding, she has the right to not believe him and at some point it turns from "cute, romcom-esque proof of continued interest" to "stalking". Sadly, it's a rather thin line separating those two (especially since many romcoms do actually depict an unhealthy degree of pursuit).
