For millennials like me, Tumblr brings back memories of our formative years, when “aesthetic” was a lifestyle and flower crowns, Converse, vintage filters, and angsty lyrics over sunset photos were practically a rite of passage. Although I must admit, I’d half-forgotten about it until Kim Kardashian mentioned “Tumblr-stalking” Kylie Jenner in an old episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians.

Kylie famously brushed the whole thing off, saying, “Kim acts like my Tumblr is Vogue Magazine. I’m over it.” And there’s a little irony in that. While other social media platforms would come to reward glossy, magazine-worthy feeds, Tumblr initially offered something a little different.

As writer Rishith Singh Rawat puts it, “This wasn’t just a social media platform—it was a cultural laboratory where fandoms were born, memes evolved at lightning speed, and every teenager with feelings and a WiFi connection could transform into a philosopher-poet-artist hybrid.”

Users could share art, GIFs, and late-night thoughts, turn tags into diary entries and inside jokes, and build on one another’s posts until they became something entirely new. You could follow someone for years, learn their thoughts on fictional characters and their very specific aesthetic preferences, and still never know their real name.

Tumblr has had its ups and downs over the years (relatable, tbh), but its emphasis on creative expression and niche communities remains central to its identity. The site describes itself as “the place you go to be yourself on the internet. No performance, no perfection. Just you, and the people who get it.”

As Amanda Hoover writes in a 2025 Business Insider article, “As in its heyday, Tumblr is still more about sharing art, culture, and fandom than individual status. More posts about anime and p**k rock than bridal trends and politics.” And it’s not just the millennials who grew up with it who are taking notice.

In 2025, 50% of Tumblr’s monthly active users were Gen Zers, as were 60% of new users signing up, according to data the platform shared with Business Insider. So why are young people “hanging out on old social media platforms,” as Hoover puts it? Part of it, she says, is that “there’s nowhere new to go.”

But some of it is just good old nostalgia. Amanda Brennan, an internet librarian who spent seven years at Tumblr before leaving her role as head of content in 2021, told Business Insider, “Gen Z has this romanticism of the early-2000s internet.” We’ve seen this Y2K revival all over the place, really, from fashion (gasp, the return of the low-rise jean) to flip phones, and yes, even “old” online platforms.

Interest in these older platforms, Hoover notes, is fueled by “a longing for a time when people could make mistakes on the internet and move past them.” Maybe that’s Tumblr’s real appeal. In an age where posting online can mean agonizing over a draft only to delete it altogether, it still feels like the kind of place where you can be a little weird, a little earnest, and a lot unfiltered. And judging by these posts, its users haven’t lost their touch.
