Canada’s reputation as a polite nation also has its unsavory side. In July, University of Ottawa researcher Dr. Karine Coen-Sanchez published a paper that highlighted the “polite racism” that’s been plaguing the country’s workforce.
Dr. Coen-Sanchez particularly highlighted how employees who are people of color, such as second-generation Haitians and Jamaican Canadians, experience systemic barriers in hiring, promotion, and daily interactions with colleagues.

A major problem underlying this semi-serious competitive exchange is the fact that the worst of us are also usually the loudest, thereby making the sane ones look guilty by association. That's a tradition as old as the "ugly American tourist" stereotype from the 1950s onward

I think a lot of the people look at Canada as the United States little brother. We had to fight Dad to let us move out in 1776. Canada moved out in 1867, and it was much easier. We may squabble like siblings, but we love y'all and we trust you are family. Look at the worlds longest undefended border for proof of that. We know that you and dad (UK) have our backs and we have yours. You are a different household, but we are all still family.

I don't really get the hateful attitude being celebrated. So many of these commenters would probably label themselves as compassionate and advocates for support. So why is it that they claim to truly believe that the US is failing, yet celebrate it? The collapse of the US would be AWFUL for Canada. Can you imagine 320 million gun-toting, desperate people looking north, remember how often they've been told how great things are there? That's the practical side. On the human side, celebrating this stuff is like pointing out the poorest kid in school and laughing about how poor he is.

Canada is not exempt from bigotry. On the other hand, there are attempts to rectify problems. If history is edited, it's to be more inclusive, especially of Indigenous people. The Canadian government appointed someone to counter Islamophobia. Sadly, the Quebec government is imposing public secularism. There is pushback - for example, the Archbishop of Montreal, opposes a law that (if passed) would ban public prayer:"it is the state that is secular, not society."
