25 Photos Of Freddie Mercury With His First And Only True Love, Mary Austin

“The only friend I’ve got is Mary and I don’t want anybody else,” Freddie Mercury once said about the ‘love of his life,’ Mary Austin. While the legendary Queen singer’s relationships were always in the media spotlight, including in the recent, wildly popular movie Bohemian Rhapsody, the one that truly mattered probably received the least attention of them all.

Mary was 19 when she first met Freddie, whose real name was Farrokh Bulsara, in the early 1970s. She was working as a PR at a hip and trendy fashion shop in Kensington, West London, when she first laid eyes on the “wild-looking artistic musician.” In an interview with the Daily Mail in 2013, she recalled: ‘He was like no one I had met before. He was very confident – something I have never been. We grew together. I liked him and it went on from there.”

The pair began dating and formed a bond that would stay with Freddie throughout his life. While their physical relationship came to an end as Freddie came to terms with his sexuality, their friendship went from strength to strength. “Our love affair ended in tears, but a deep bond grew out of it, and that’s something nobody can take away from us,” Freddie once said. “It’s unreachable. All my lovers ask why they can’t replace her, but it’s simply impossible.”

Mary went on to get married and have two children. She was there for Freddie as he succumbed to the HIV virus, and he left her with much of his fortune after his passing. “If things had been different you would have been my wife, and this would have been yours anyway,” he wrote in his will.

Things didn’t go well for Mary after Freddie died, suffering from illnesses and stress caused by the burden of her inheritance as jealousy and resentment reared its ugly head. “I don’t think the remaining members of Queen have ever reconciled themselves to it,” she said in the interview. “I don’t understand it. Because to me, it’s bricks and mortar. I try never to be jealous or envy people.”

“Freddie was very generous to them in the last years of his life and I don’t think they embraced that generosity. I don’t think they appreciated or recognized what Freddie had left them. He left the band a quarter share of the last four albums – which he didn’t need to do. And I never hear from them. After Freddie died, they just wandered off.”

Mary still gets reminders of Freddie, and the life they once shared. “‘You hear a specific song and it makes you feel emotional. We lived those 20-odd years together. Under the same roof. Together emotionally.”

As he began to succumb to the effects of AIDS, Freddie and Mary would watch video footage of his old performances and reminisce. “On one occasion he turned to me and said sadly, ‘To think I used to be so handsome.’ I got up and had to leave the room,” she recalled.

“It was too upsetting. We were never allowed to get emotional around him and that was hard. But I knew if I sat there I would have been in tears. When I returned I just sat down as if nothing had happened. But for that moment, he caught me off guard.”

It’s fair to say that these two soulmates experienced their fair share of highs and lows during their time together. With Bohemian Rhapsody bringing Mercury’s career and legacy firmly back into the spotlight, we thought we would share some of their happy moments together in never seen before photos. Because at the end of the day, we all need somebody to love.

He just looks so happy with her - can tell she was his constant soulmate. He may have been attracted to men - but loved her
Love and sexuality aren't the same.
True that.
That hit me
Actually they are.
Well, he was actually bisexual. As he put it, he didn't want to label himself, but he was always open about his sexuality, and that he wasn't exclusively attracted to men.
no he wasn’t. He said “I’m as gay as a daffodil” I think it was. He avoided having sex with Mary and she found out he was interested in men by interviews. He never directly told her.
FACT. He left her the bulk of a 60 to 80 million dollar inheritance; leaving Hutton and the band much, much, smaller inheritances, in comparison. She was his soul mate. Plain and simple.
Right you don’t leave someone all that if they did not matter most in your life.
Money = love...ok

Mary Austin was Mercury's beard. They lived together for two years, until Mary discovered he was gay. All indications are that they were indeed close. He trusted her. The comment Mercury made about Austin being "the love of his life" were made while he was still hiding his homosexuality. The true love of his life was Jim Hutton, who was with Freddie for the last seven years of his life. He referred to Jim as "my husband" and was wearing the wedding ring Jim had given him the day he died. He left Jim one million dollars and a valuable tract of land in County Carlow, Ireland, where Jim was from. https://mymodernmet.com/freddie-mercury-jim-hutton/
He also loved men.
"“If things had been different you would have been my wife, and this would have been yours anyway,” he wrote in his will.". Damn. Now tell me that being gay is a choice. Most won't admit it, but very few people are lucky enough to find their soulmate.
Well he wasn't gay he was bisexual.
If he was just a bi ,they would of stayed together .....
I can't fathom BEING gay, but always noticed and sensed as a kid...that some from childhood were just different. Not a choice. You could not possibly just wake up one day and decide to be one or the other. Or in between.
My daughter is homosexual, and she was different since she was a child, it wasn't a choice, she was born that way!!! Being Gay is not a choice... and I respected that from the beginning, because I knew she was like that!!! And I think this is beautiful!!! Having the freedom to be who you really are without pressure!!! Long live love!!! Whatever it is!!! I love you all
I think what greatly affected his sexuality was the rape he suffered in boarding school. Apparently, the Head Master was gay and relentlessly pursued Freddie. He was all alone in India with no one to protect him. I have gay friends who both suffered through being raped at a young age.

He also ended his days with his beloved last partner (whose name I forget). He was surrounded by love--from Mary and from Jim. It was an awful death, and he was too young.
And with his cat(s)
He was reportedly petting his favorite cat, Delilah, as he died
I heard from my dad, (who's a doctor) that if he got AIDS just a few years later than when he did, he would've still been alive now, and he'd be able to get help.
This information has been on the internet for quite some time ... most of us are aware that had Freddie been alive for a few more months .. he could have started some treatments ... even though a FDA approved medicine did not become available until 1994 ...
Ummm no. There is no cure for HIV or AIDS and certainly not in 1991. The first anti retroviral therapy didn't come along until 1997. Some people from those early days did survive but that's an absurd statement to make.
Mary was his real love. He gave up on women when that didn’t work out.
I think his partner's name was Jim Hutton
