The hotel industry is full of tiny little secrets that they don’t want you to know about when you come to stay overnight while traveling. They might not have literal skeletons in their closets, but the metaphorical ones can barely fit! We’re talking about insider knowledge about how often the duvets and covers on the beds get cleaned, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
Of course, there are some positive secrets as well, and ex-hotel employee Janessa Richard spilled the beans in a series of fun and candid TikTok videos. Keep in mind, though, Janessa noted that this is her personal experience working at just one hotel and we really shouldn’t assume that all hotels function this way. (Though most are sure to have their own shady secrets that nobody should know about.)
Check out some of Janessa’s best insights below, upvote the ones that you found useful and entertaining, and let us know what hotel secrets you’ve uncovered if you’ve ever worked in the industry, dear Pandas.

We are legally not allowed to say your room number out loud, which is why we will usually write it on an envelope, pass it to you and tell you "this is your room number".
Wow, I can't even count how many times I've been told my room number verbally
well, I have heard many receptionists say out loud a room number with others around and will even mention the floor etc..
If you are very nice and we like you, we can upgrade you to a better room or a suite at no extra cost, if there's any available.
Different hotel brands have different policies when it comes to upgrading their guests. The hotel I worked at didn't really care, as long as we had the availability we were allowed to.
I did have some guests who asked for free upgrades, if they were nice I'd give it to them, if they weren't I'd lie and tell them we didn't have any suites available.
That is good but what if a new guest comes in and would like to pay for that upgrade room?
As a hostel manager, I can confirm this. Also, the answer to your question is that this can only happen, of course, in case there are enough free rooms of the better one, thus leaving the oportunity for the others to upgrade at extra cost. We always think ahead and check the upcoming days' ocupancy and act accordingly :)
Load More Replies...We had this at the Athenaeum last year. I think they weren't very full in September during Covid!
I have turned up late to a hotel before without booking. Asked politely and got the room for a knock down price because it wouldn't have sold otherwise.
California mom Janessa focuses on videos about hotels, as well as her motherhood journey. She has over 53k followers on TikTok and appears to highly value honesty both in her content and in how she engages with her fandom.
Running a hotel well isn’t as easy as washing the sheets between every customer and smiling at everybody all day long. In a previous interview, Dr. Gabor Forgacs from Ryerson University told Bored Panda about some other aspects of maintaining quality at hotels and how hoteliers can ensure that their businesses prosper.
Dr. Forgacs noted that the main reason why guests return to hotels is simple: they had good memories of staying there. “Not necessarily a gold plated doorknob or the extra skirt hangers in the closet; best memories are created through interaction with people. If service excellence exceeds expectations, guests always remember that,” he told Bored Panda earlier.
If your breakfast is included in your stay but you're leaving before breakfast start time, you can always ask the staff if they can make a little "to-go" bag with a few items in it.
That's essential! So many people don't realize this, and think that because they're leaving before breakfast "opens" that they're out of luck. Hotel staff that I've interacted with are happy to put in an apple, granola bar, etc. You're paying for it, anyway!
We got a breakfast bag from our hotel in Egypt as we were leaving for an excursion. Pastries, juice box, and a whole raw courgette. Still not sure what they expected us to do with it...
Well I mean it is food so you do what you normally do with food, you eat it
Load More Replies...Off topic a little, I had a recent shoulder replacement. When getting ready to check out, they informed us that we could get a take away dinner for us, so we wouldn't have to worry about cooking. I wonder how often that is possible, but not mentioned.
yes. Ask for a breakfast box if breakfast is included. You do need to ask the night before for them to get it ready for you to go
Always had grab and go bags available at places like Hampton Inn, although we normally availed ourselves of at least a hot coffee and piece of fresh fruit from the breakfast buffet if we were leaving in a hurry.
This is not a secret. I asked for "breakfast" package many times.
In the week before Christmas I did a tech job at a certain motel chain and they gave me one of their bagged lunches and a coffee for my onward journey... it was much appreciated.
Most hotels do not wash their duvets/comforters in between guests. They wash them maybe once a year which is really freaking gross.
So, the first thing you wanna do when you walk into your room - don't go lay down on your bed, take the duvet off!
I'm surprised people don't know this. That's the very first thing I do when I visit a hotel. I also sanitize "high touch" surfaces like the TV remote, light switches, etc.
I know, this is gonna be the unpopular opinion and it's gonna get downvoted, but jesus f*****g christ, that's what you have a friggin' immune system for. Do you lick the remote or eat your dinner from it? Even if guests before you were gross and, dunno, ate chicken wings while switching channels (which you would notice) - wash your hands before eating and you're fine. I seriously don't understand why people feel that urge to over-sanitize everything, causing allergies in the long run because their immune system is plain bored.
Load More Replies...So I should sleep freezing because there is nothing left to cover myself with? I am not sure I get that one.
Try asking for an extra blanket! The extras usually are washed and kept in clean areas and when go back to housekeeping they wash them again to put in the cupboards so the possibility that these are clean are higher!
Load More Replies...The duvet, the weighted blanket between two thin sheets.
Load More Replies...I have always assumed that. Only the covers get washed and changed between guests, not the actual duvet or pillow. I mean you could say that about the mattress too. It's not like they wash the mattress itself between guests. They only wash the sheets.
I assumed the same. Do they normally use additional mattress protector,s? If not, you have an approximately equal barrier (one layer of thinnish fabric) between your skin and the mattress and duvet. The previous guests' sweat will have dried so the covers should keep it from making direct contact with your skin.
Load More Replies...This isn't true for all hotels. The brand I worked for they were changed at every check out. If the guest started more than one day out was done every 2-3 days. Now if the bed sorry has flowers printed or is a solid dark color those are only washed once our twice a year to save it from fading
And this is not a serious health code violation of some sort? People don't just sleep on the beds, they eat, drink, do all manner of nasty stuff… these (and sheets) should be clean for each customer with a tag pinned on to verify it - or something. Even that could be lied about. Always check for bedbugs… you can find specific ways online. You can bring those monsters home with you. Don’t do it!
Why are people so paranoid about hygiene? Of course the duvet or the comforter is not washed after every guest, why should it be? You also do not deep clean the carpet after every guest! As long as the sheets have been changed everything is fine. Laying on it when you walk into the room (fully dressed) is "freaking gross?" Girl, did you ever sit on a park bench? Have you used public transport? Petted an animal? I do not need the whole world sanitised for me, thank you very much.
That seems like BS. I lived in two start hotel in London, sheets were changed daily and every few days I saw big pile of bags with them collected/returned by laundry company.
Sheets, yes. Comforters, bedspreads and duvets, not so much. Cushion covers, probably never.
Load More Replies...Meanwhile, struggling businesses need to reinvent themselves and up their standards. But none of that can happen without some honest appraisal of where the hotel stands at the moment. “Languishing hotels need to take an honest look at themselves to understand the reasons why they can't create special memories,” he explained.
Almost every standard room that you book comes with a water bottle and drinking glasses. I would not recommend drinking from those glasses as most of the time they're not changed in between guests as long as they look "clean".
When I stayed in hotels, I always washed the glasses and cups before I used them.
"I would not recommend drinking from those glasses..." Glasses can be washed.
As tacky as it might look, I can appreciate the wrapped and sealed individual disposable cups offered by the lower-end chains for just this reason. I always reuse them myself during my stay in order to reduce waste.
From now on I will make the glasses look dirty so they’ll be changed for the next guest
I always wash them before using, by experience i know they're kind of wash when the room is being cleaned but are dried with dirty pillow pouch or linen sheet from the room when those are being changed.
We ALWAYS recommend booking through the hotel directly. If you book through a 3rd party, your room and room type are not actually guaranteed.
Here in Korea, there's many respectable 3rd party apps and sites for booking hotels at cheaper prices, and we've never had problems with it. You check-in, they confirm your identity, find you in their database and give you the keys. You may make extensions and pay extra for additional services you decided for on the spot.
That really is for the most part, the same routine here in the US. I would imagine that there are certain times when expectations aren't completely met. But I don't see those as the norm.
Load More Replies...Not entirely true. Lot of places sell most of their rooms through third party like the Bookin. This kind of place is dependant on good reviews, so they will do their best to offer the guest with what they booked. Also, sometimes the third party offers cheeper prices than the accomodation facility itself. I'm a former hostel / hotel worker.
I always look at booking then contact the hotel directly. They always make me the same price and often upgrade my room because they don't have to involve the third party who takes them 15% of the money. Win/win.
Load More Replies...I'm not sure if this is true! You always get a confirmation email that is from the hotel itself and there are hotels that work almost exclusively with these platforms even though you can book straight through them...I work in such hotel and 90% of reservations is through booking!
I have witnessed this many times. Guest - "I have the confirmation through the budget site." Hotel clerk-"We never received that reservation and we are fully booked" then guest gets mad and the clerk can only say "You need to call the site and work with them" which never goes over well. I always book through the hotel.
depends on the site, respectable sites not only will help you find a new place but can actually compensate you if something goes wrong and the room is different from the one you booked
Load More Replies...I've used 3rd party sites all over the US and Canada for almost a decade and never had a single problem.
the third party sites are a great way to learn about availability and rates, but then go to the hotel site or call them to actually book
Booking.com has never done me wrong, all these years. I have NEVER not gotten the exact room type that I thought I was getting. They are ACES, in my book.
that is not true. We are obligated to provide the room type booked. But sometimes the third party puts up a rate for a run-of-house room which means anything that is available. Bed requests are then also subject to availability when it's requested. For direct bookings we can block the rooms immediately, for 3rd party we need to wait for the booking confirmation to come in.
My brother who travels for business books through third part sites, but unless I am using a travel agent (as I do for my Disney trips), I book directly with the hotel. Often they will have an offer that just shows up on their site or in your email if you have subscribed, and my AAA/AARP cards get me a discount of some kind almost everywhere.
And they might not tell you, just hand you a key. My daughter boked a suite for the night before her wedding. The place was gonna be ful the next day with bridesmaids, photographer, videographer, hair and makeup, and sundry assistants. It was only when we reached the door, that we found ourselves in a single room. It took a lot of sweet talking to get the suite she'd paid for.
“Service culture is not built overnight; the way you hire, you train, and conduct yourself is crucial. Mistakes are made all the time; how you recover and show genuine care would make a difference,” Dr. Forgacs said.
Never EVER walk barefoot on the carpets. They are unbelievingly gross. They get vacuumed between guests but are rarely ever washed and deep cleaned.
I would not expect a hotel to wash or deep clean carpets in between every guest. That's what slippers are for.
you do realize people walk barefoot outside and on the beach and in the park. I doubt they are worried about the vacuumed carpet
The outdoors gets sanitized by the sun, never caught any bug from walking barefoot on the beach; but I got a foot fungus that took 3 months and 4 types of oral and topical medication to get rid of - by forgetting to wear slippers in a hotel room ( 3 star hotel in the very center of Tokyo).
Load More Replies...Do people imagine that bacteria can teleport their way through the skin on your feet or something? Feet are literally designed to protect us from whatever is on the ground.
Feet fungus can be debilitating. But honestly, yeah, I don't fear these things to that level.
Load More Replies...I wonder how many domestic carpets are ever really deep cleaned either...
I was just going to mention this. I do a thorough vacuum once a month but nothing like a DEEP CLEAN cause I don't own a shop vac. Granted, shoes are also not allowed to be worn indoors ... but still. Not many people do a deep clean with a shop vac often in their home.
Load More Replies...These tips are painful. You would have lasted well 40 - 50 years ago. Would hate to live in so much fear of everything.
I caught athlete's foot in a hotel because I didn't knwo about it. A really fancy one, too. I hoenstly prefer laminate floors or tiles. Less comfy but less gross, too.
I have notice more and more hotels remove all carpets and replace it in wood or some other type of flooring this year.
There are a lot of shady things that happen in hotels. We once had an "escort company" rent out a room and bring men in. We had to call the cops, things got crazy.
When I worked at a hotel (major chain) cleaning rooms we were told to mind our own business, even if we witnessed something illegal or drugs, etc. We were told the only exception is anything involving children or if someone asked for help.
I’m not offended by sex work, it’s been legal in my country for almost 20 years.
I realized just how crazy things get in hotel rooms (even the nice ones!) by following Crime Scene Cleaners on IG. Even the owner of the company, Neil, hates staying in hotels!
The things I see as a hotelier. Father and son sharing the same lady in turns. Son had to wait his turn at the lobby bar till father was done. And men bringing ladyboys home without realising and then we wait for the phonecall 15 min to come help settle the dispute cos guy would not pay.
We once stayed in a shady motel and they put an 'escort' in the room next to us. The walls were very thin and the 'escort' received several visitors throughout the night. My family slept through it all but I couldn't - too noisy! I finally called the front desk and complained and then I heard the neighbor's phone ring. They did quiet down a bit after.
An extra ounce of care for your customers goes a long way. The more you genuinely care about them, the more likely they are to return. “Following up is a secret weapon. Comping, offering a discount or an upgrade for a mishap is what a typical hotel would do. The better ones will always follow up with the guest and on top of a remedy, tell their plan how the mistake will be prevented from happening again,” he said.
Some hotels have a "100% satisfaction guarantee" policy, which means if you find even one little thing that you're not satisfied with, and bring it up to the manager, they might be able to compensate your entire stay.
This irks me. It's great for the angry guest, but such a policy keeps rates high, to "compensate" for people who do this. If you have a real issue, but all means, but if you couldn't find your favourite snack in the vending machine, that's not a refundable 'offense.'
Same. By the sounds of things, the decent people have to subsidise the assholes.
Load More Replies...Most hotels will go a long way to keep the customer happy and avoid having to deal with a written complaint or a bad review. If you are resonable and well-behaved, most issues can be delt with in an orderly mannor even without a 100% satisfaction garantee. Since there are some real wierd people out there that is either just exploiting the system or have no grasp on how the world works and that can cause a lot of trouble with such a garantee.
I once found a piece of broken glass under the bed in a room was staying in with my kids when they were small. Pointed it out, just so they'd be more careful about cleaning. They comped all our meals at the hotel restaurant
Some people take advantage of these policies. And some places ought to have them. I will never forget being woken up by some locals casing the garage, then finally getting to sleep at 3am only to have the outside pool music speakers start blasting at 6am. I was not a happy camper.
I got one of those guest survey cards after staying in a motel once. On it I complained about how nasty and rude the check-in staff was towards me. Some trashy chick having a bad day. It wasn’t a big deal, I just wanted them to know. They called me a week later and sent me a coupon for a free nights stay. I didn’t ask for it but I took it.
They do not change the toilet paper rolls in between guests. If there's paper left on the roll, they'll leave it and fold the end to make it look pretty.
Absolutely understandable. Why should anyone expect a half-full roll of perfectly good toilet paper to be dumped.
Changing the toilet paper when there is still some on the roll is a waste of paper.
In all the hotels i have worked housekeeping is taking the leftovers all the time and use them in other cleaning business or even take them home! They were allowed to take them
Load More Replies...Public bathrooms in malls, restaurants, theaters, etc. don’t either, yet we use them constantly. This one doesn’t bother me. I’d just pull a few sheets off and throw them away before I used clean sheets beneath.
This seems exceedingly picky. Are they supposed to throw the whole roll out between guests? If I have a party at my house, I don't give every one of my friends a personal toilet roll to use in my bathroom.
Why change it? In work.... they are not going to change it every time someone uses the loo so why in the hotel?
Most of these sound like some people are allergic to anything that isn't themselves.
True. I've stayed in hundreds of hotels for work and as long as it looks and smells clean which it always does in a hotel I sleep quite happily

Nice, but most of the hotel's I've been at tell me otherwise. Hence the disclaimer.
You really expected any of the hotels to say "yes, the carpet is gross, we don't wash the duvet and we don't change the glasses"...like...really..?
Load More Replies...I wouldn't expect a fresh roll of tp every time the room is cleaned that's extremely wasteful and who cares?
All a bit dramatic, if they put a fresh toilet roll out every time what effect would that have on the environment? Do you wash your carpets more than once a year? Most glasses in hotels I've stayed are wrapped. Heres an idea if theyre not, wadh it before you use it.
