Why You Should Never Discourage An Artist

It’s easy to romanticize the life of an artist, but the truth is that it’s a very difficult profession to succeed in. The money isn’t always steady, your work is often undervalued, and you’ll have to put up with idiots frequently telling you to “get a real job.” It’s therefore important to encourage and support young artists as much as possible, because if you don’t then it’s very easy for them to lose hope and give up. Check out this comic to see what we mean. It was created by Zen Pencils, who used an inspiring quote by indie film director Kevin Smith to show us just how rewarding encouragement can be.

I can vouch for this. Not saying "well done" to a child when they try something they like discourages them from trying harder next time, especially when you tell them negative things. [Speaking from personal experience].

Looking at the last picture, maybe she turned out to be a professional basketball player? ^^ Anyway, that's a great message

If only people get that studying itself is a talent like art and music

The girl has natural talent, no matter what she does. Artist, basketball star, or whatever, she has "The Gift". You go Girl!

The discouraged artist will more or less adopt a mind-set that accommodates settling for less, and then they'll become very good at that for a significant part of their less than remarkable career.

I find the comic interesting, the text and the message it conveys questionable, though. It speaks out against justified criticism, which can be encouragement to push even harder. And the comic discourages getting "into the books". I rather favour the balanced way, including balancing encouragement and criticism. If well meant and presented, both are valuable. And I now do not mean to rant at children for their doodles. Moreover, the comic promotes a "follow your dreams spirit" a bit too much. Do what you like and what fullfills you, but simply encouraging everyone to follow their artistic side might be a bit too much if they also have other interests. After all, there are not enough well paid jobs, and there probably won't be soon. Thus, I think for many it is perfectly fine to do artistic stuff as a hobby but still get a job that fullfills you.

Hans, it's just a simplified version of "it's good to encourage children". Stop trying to let everyone know you "have a PhD in Psychology", or whatever...
