Twitter User Explains How Defunding The Police Turned Out To Be A Good Idea In The Past
The worldwide protests following the death of George Floyd made many of us realized that law enforcement is in great need of reform. While people have been marching to end systematic racism and police brutality for a long time, now the activists are much bolder in their demands for change to happen. One of the suggestions which have been met with controversy is defunding the police.
Every year, both state and local governments spend 100 billion dollars on law enforcement. So why not cut some of that money and spend it on a variety of helpful services that would support the community? While to some it seems like a brilliant idea that could decrease both poverty and crime, there are also those who are strictly against it. A writer Jamie Ford has an explanation of why he thinks people disagree with defunding the police. It’s because “they’re not understanding that change rarely happens from within”, he writes.

Instead of offering complex arguments in favor of the cause, Ford decided to prove that Americans are already benefiting from defunded police by reminding of some historical events.

Share on FacebookYes, the total misconception that defunding the police will turn the US into a lawless nation is very strong and understandable. How could a nation do with a police force that isn't equipped with tanks, armoured personel vehicles, teargas, batons, shields and rubberbullets? Just look at the UK. There are many police officers there that don't even have guns and the crime index is even less than in the US but the security index is much higher. And when you look at other countries where the police is armed but have a better POLICE-training you'll notice that their crime index is only half of the US crime index. So perhaps the US should be looking at investing more money in training and education and much less in military stuff to oppress the people.
Absolutely. Training in the UK for police is 2 years (with a degree) and 3 years without and then 2 years probation/on the job training. So that is 4 or 5 years before they can call themselves a police officer.
Load More Replies...They actually wrote PADDY WAGON on the sides of these vehicles???? Good Grief.
yeah thats pretty bigoted since its a slur for the Irish
Load More Replies...Maybe I don't get it, it just sounds like the distribution of assets and them investing in more practical services. Not defunding.
Less money for the police because it woud be spent on education, mental health, housing, poverty issues etc. So, yeah, you get it. 👍
Load More Replies...Aside from reallocating resources away from police departments—-I mean, do they all need to have a million dollar military grade tank parked on property? BTW, the answer to that question is NO!—-and giving them to other services, we need to let go of the idea that we shouldn’t have to pay taxes that are reasonable commensurately with our income. Think about it. How do you think public services are paid for in the first place? Tax revenue, that’s how. So, if you don’t contribute your fair share to your city, county, and state, you end up cheating yourself out of necessary public services and infrastructure, like (non-privately owned) ambulances, police and fire personnel (officers, and non-uniform administrative and support people too), road maintenance, bridge repair, etc etc etc. Part of why all that has gotten so subpar in the US is people of means doing all they can to avoid paying their fair share toward them. Some services cannot—and should never—-be privatized and for-profit.
Not mentioned is WHY armed officers are needed to respond these days, which goes to how the non-police responders started being attacked. How it started being unsafe for them to go into areas. Most police do not want to have to go to lots of these calls, because it takes them away from real crime. But, other first responders and such are in too much danger if they go without. If you want to fix the police, you need to take a hard look at society. Wonder why the ambulance refused to go into the IdiotZone in Seattle after the shooting? Because they refused to put their own lives at risk among violent people without police presence.
What you need to ask is WHY there is so many violence in the US Cities compares to other cities in the first world countries and this is in spite of heavily armed police force.
Load More Replies...I don’t personally agree with defunding police, overhaul of training, process & education for police plus implementing bodycams thus holdIng both citizens & police accountable. Rigorous process to overhaul the system & hold all officers to higher standard. I’m afraid if police goes completely defunded, it will encourage more crimes to be committed. And protection will only be available to those who can afford it. You can’t rely on people being good citizens because there’s always a few people who ruins it for the rest of the population.
Everything Jurgen Shantz has said. In addition the money would be spent on other programs to helpe crucial but neglected areas like education, public health, housing and youth services. If those areas are improved there is less crime and less need for the police - certainly in their current form!
Load More Replies...why the hell is THIS kind of history totally ignored within US educational systems? (well.... we all know the glaringly obvious reason.... ) but JEEZ, THESE STORIES NEED TO BE KNOWN!!!!
If you aren't in favor of defunding police, and re-allocating that money to programs that are proven to actually help communities (mental health, education, jobs, affordable housing, etc.)...Well, you are wrong and on the wrong side of history. You also might just be a bigoted a*****e who's afraid of FOX news-type myths.
The Police have never been DEFUNDED. For the last 60 years the Globalists have built the American Police state. We've gone from Shot guns to machine guns. Police cars to Military Personal Carriers. The police here wear more armor and gear than our troops in war zones.
Because your right wing gun nuts are better armed than your military. most of them are former military and are waiting for anyone to try an take their guns
Load More Replies...Why not just to optimize the way money is spent right now, restructure the organization within funds they have? It's like making a step back, and waiting for 2 steps ahead to make themselves magically. And during this waiting period, there could be some issues, that could cost lives. I don't think cutting resources and waiting for change to happen due to shortage, is the wisest way to solve this.
I hope every single person calling for the police to defunded needs the police one day...(god forbid) a loved ones goes missing or your home is robbed or you’re involved in a car accident where the police report will prove you weren’t at fault or ANY situation where you WANT the police there...and they tell you to go eff yourself. The police should be APPRECIATED. For every bad cop there’s THOUSANDS, if not more, who are good, decent, men and women who put their lives on the line every single day for YOUR SAFETY. You should all be ashamed of yourselves! People like you are the reason I will never vote democrat again. I’d be embarrassed to be associated with you.
Defunding the police does not have to mean a reduction in services or readiness. That's an extremist argument that adds nothing to the debate.
Load More Replies...This doesn't sound like defunding the police. This sounds like finding a solution to a problem and moving forward with it.
I fear defunding, why. Who do I call when my I go out dress as my true self? right now I hope that if it turns ugly, that the police will take my side. If there are no police or a neighborhood watch, mine are they type that we all rail against here. Right now, they call the cops on my trans butt and my SO if I sit in the car in my dive way, they measure my grass to sees if they can complain. Our problem is not the police are here, times have changed, we need a police force today. What needs to change is not tossing the idea of a city police force out, we need to changes the why they are run. Hold the people to the badge to a higher level then themselves. If we can nor hold them to the rules, then how will we hold the next set of people to any standard. It will not be anarchy with out police. It ill be the same as the any other frontier town was. Run by the people with the money to their value and if you did not like it you left or got shoot.
Investing in communities would act as a better deterrent to crime by directly addressing societal problems like poverty, mental illness, and homelessness. Better education, public health, housing and youth services. These things, and more, if improved means that you should be able to go out dressed as your true self and you're left alone because people know better, understand you better and are less unhappy and wanting to take things out on others. You still have the police but the idea is that they would be needed less. Something needs to change as it sure as hell isn't working right now sadly.
Load More Replies...The one thing that seems to be missing here is the forgotten job of "Enforcing The Law". EMT personnel are not being trained, or required, to do that. Hence, this story lacks the insight that is needed. The only real way that doing away with law enforcement will work, would be for every citi-en to take an active part in that enforcement. Unfortunately, there are so many who don't want to "get involved", or go out of their way to help with enforcement.
The police obviously also isn't trained nor able to "Enforce the Law". The number of reports on cops abusing their powers, using excessive violence, intimidating civilians and just being plain racist are just insane. The number of reports on cops losing their jobs because they refuse to be part of that culture are ridiculous. The number of reports of cops getting away with murder are absurd. Now isn't there something in all of this that might indicate that there's something very wrong within the US police departments? A well trained and educated police force doesn't need civilians to go out of their way to do their work properly. Or else you could just fire all cops and leave it to the civilians to do the policing themselves. Wouldn't be surprised if they did a better job...
Load More Replies...But... that's ambulance duty. It's good that they are not in charge of that, but what duty they want to defund now? Please tell me!
They respond to people having mental health crises, domestic disputes, animal emergencies, even children being disorderly at school. Wouldn't it be better to let them do their real job (enforcing laws and catching criminals) than to make them be psychologists, marriage counselors, animal welfare officers, and social workers? (They are ALL of these things in my town, and it's truly not fair to them.)
