This is a great question! I see a lot of the anti-children brand of 'feminism' on BP and question whether it is feminism at all. Feminism is a lot of things but at it's core is about self determination and personal choice. I don't see how we can view anti-children feminism as anything other than an oxymoron. As a feminist, I would never deride or condemn another woman for ANY choice she makes. Whether that is to have children or not have children.

The BBC does excellent long features sometimes. Very recently they sent a team of folks to South Korea - where the birth rate is the lowest - in the world. Mostly - they talked to young women. I was impressed with their investigation; not suited for academic studies - but good human - talk. My impression? The young women of South Korea are perfectly correct to be terrified of having children there- the burdens are horrendous. It's not the same everywhere - but - understanding it all - is not simple.

I think it has more to do with the fact that it's become more and more acceptable for people (especially women) to say that they don't want kids. Considering that in this day and age women are *still* shamed for it, I can't say I'm surprised by the amount of force being used to push back; women have been treated like our only worth is as baby-making machines for pretty much all of human history, and we're really, REALLY tired of it.

... but they are vastly outnumbered by the near-majority of women who want kids, and don't feel able to have them, and even vastly outnumbered by the women who have kids, but feel ostracized or sneered at for having them or having too many of them. Frankly, the most shocking discovery was that for all the pretenses of superiority, the British don't really offer much parental leave at all: 160 pounds a week? That's a THIRD of minimum wage in my woeful, oppressed purple American state! Can you even afford daycare on that? (Yeah, I heard about free day care... for 570 hours per year... that's less valuable than the U.S. tax writeoff.)

Just curious… how are you defining anti-children? Like shaming people for having/wanting kids? Simply not wanting them yourself? You called it “anti-children feminism” but would it still be called that if it were a man that said he didn’t want kids? Just wondering
