“Normally They Don’t Hire ‘Evil’ People”: Christian Boss Loses It Over Employee’s New Tattoo Idea
The freedom of religion is an integral part of a healthy and functioning civilization. It’s also a fundamental human right in most parts of the world. But when it comes to all sensitive topics, some people don’t see any shades of grey: it’s either their way or eternal damnation and hellfire if you dare do anything else.
Those same people tend to believe that anyone who doesn’t follow their particular religious denomination is a satanist (though if you’d like to learn about The Satanic Temple’s charitable work, you can read Bored Panda’s article right over here, later). The sad reality is that quite a few religious fanatics can be found in the United States. Somewhat ironic, considering that the very first colonists were running from religious persecution in the Old World (though some think US religious tolerance is a myth).
Redditor u/ITAKEYASQUAD shared how their supervisor accused them of being “an evil satan worshipper” after finding out about their plans to get a tattoo. The ink in question? A series of runes related to the OP’s Norse pagan beliefs. There are several important issues at play here. And we need to untangle all of them. Scroll down for the full story, dear Pandas.
Bored Panda reached out to David McKinlay, the owner of the Archangel 1608 Tattoo Studio in Glasgow, to hear his thoughts about people being discriminated against because of their tattoos. He also said that it’s commendable to be so proud of your beliefs that you choose to get a tattoo related to them. Scroll down for our full interview with tattoo artist David, from Scotland.
Someone working in a small town in Missouri shared how their supervisor went absolutely ballistic after they decided to get a runic tattoo

Their boss harassed them, calling them ‘evil’ and saying that they were bound for hell. Here is what happened, in the author’s own words

We got in touch with David, the owner of the Archangel 1608 Tattoo Studio in Glasgow, Scotland, to hear his take on discrimination against people who get inked.
“We’re hearing less and less about these situations, which is good. It’s just unfortunate that they happen at all,” he told us. However, he noted that it’s difficult to tell if someone complaining about tattoos or accusing tattooed people of something is coming form a place of ignorance or intolerance. Ironically, these are “both things that most religions preach against.”
“You can try and educate them about their misconceptions and hate, but generally they’re so far rooted in the beliefs that it’s hard for them to accept facts and information that against their prejudiced misconceptions,” the tattoo artist told Bored Panda. “It’s probably harder to deal with when it’s someone at your place of work, as it’s harder to avoid them and their bile.”
We also wanted to find out how widespread religious tattoos are, at least in artist David’s experience.
“Religious tattoos are quite popular, especially pagan/Norse, Christian, and Buddhist. We do other religions’ tattoos as well, though not as often,” he shared with Bored Panda. “I think it’s people proud to show their beliefs, and literally wear it on their skin.”
There are anti-discrimination laws in place for exactly the types of situations that redditor u/ITAKEYASQUAD has to deal with. As the OP mentions in a few comments, they’re recording their interactions with their supervisor now. To oversimplify things, if the manager continues harassing their employee, they’ll end up in a ton of legal trouble.
Now, as to the tangled mess of issues that the story revealed. First of all, there’s the holier-than-thou attitude that’s rooted in a Manichean (good vs. evil) perspective. Some people tend to see the world in a very black-and-white way, leaving little room for nuance. It’s this type of thinking that tends to make people vulnerable to conspiracy theories, as we’ve covered on Bored Panda before.
Secondly, we have to look at the breach of trust that happened in town. The Missouri tattoo artist is friends with the post author’s supervisor. They blabbed about the Norse pagan ink. And that led to the whole brimstone-and-hellfire confrontation. You’d expect the tattoo artist to be more subtle and not gossip about their clients. Especially if it’s about a non-Christian tattoo in a very religious small town in Missouri.
Lastly, there’s the whole workplace dynamic to consider here. Clearly, the supervisor is a very judgmental and moralizing individual. You’d think that in 2022 managers would look at a person’s skills, character, and track record, instead of focusing on their appearance and beliefs. At the end of the day, every employee decides for themselves where to draw the line when it comes to such hostile behavior.
If talking it out with your boss doesn’t lead to any changes and if HR doesn’t take any steps (if there are any HR personnel at all in the company!), then it’s best to either look for other employment or seek legal representation.
Naturally, that’s easier said than done: it’s incredibly difficult to stand out from the crowd in small communities. Finding further employment may be extremely hard if you ever get into an argument with someone who has influence in the town. But there’s really no excuse for bullying. And the best counter to that is documenting evidence of when harassment happens.

As someone who lives in Missouri I can tell you this kind of attitude is no suprise. A lot of small towns can be like this. I live in STL which thankfully is quite a bit more tolerant. Don't get me wrong I've run into my fair share of a******s but in general it's much more accepting.
When pagans, atheists, & Satanists have more Christlike values than many Christians, there's a problem. Reason 2,842 why I don't want what many so-called Christians have.

The bigger cities in Missouri are still super religious. We live in the city & there are literally 2-3 churches at every major intersection. And people will still recoil from you if they think you look like a 'satanist'. This is all from personal experience as a tattooed, pink-haired atheist living in kcmo...

My parents are super Christian and I swear some of the most awful people I have ever met in my life go to their church and proclaim to anyone who will listen how much they love Jesus.
If I was the OP (since there is no HR) I’d record every conversation I have with the boss going forward and then sue for harassment. You will win, because he is not hiding it. Even a little.

No one truly knows what goes on between someone else and God except that person and God, but if "what you say flows from what is in your heart" (Luke 6:45), then I'd guess they don't have a real relationship.
What was wrong with the poster that felt the need to comment "magic isn't real" and dump on OP's faith? Completely unecessary and took away from any help they may have thought they were providing.
They were just pointing out the obvious - organized religion really likes to bring out the worse in ppl and it's all over something made up by man. Christians always like to use the excuse of a so called god when they do f****d up s**t - how many ppl have died because of different beliefs from Christians ?! History has proven, and contiues to prove in real time, that Christianity is used as a means to judge, belittle and even murder another person. It's appalling! Sadly, you are probably going to need to move. They won’t let you escape them. I would have told the supervisor that it is a protection against those who are possessed would harm the innocent by making them reveal their hatred and fear for the symbols. They don't even have to see the symbols, and it will instil fear and hate. Wait a minute, Mr Supervisor... Do you fear or hate my tattoo? Does your leg itch or ache when you enter church?
Welcome to the "Bible Belt"! In this part of the world you'll find towns where people still think it's okay to hate anyone that's different than them. Whole towns of white christian males run everything and no one can do a thing about it because they're so far from major cities that no one seems to notice them. What happened to OP is horrible, but not uncommon. If he can't get any justice from any local sources (which is likely), he's better off calling a national group like the ACLU, or any major news outlet. Expecting to get help from the owners of his company or any local authorities will only end in disappointment (at best)...
This is a great chance to kill two birds with one stone. Get the tattoo, let them react as they will, while recording everything. Especially the before tattoo and after. Wait for them to use their religion to fire you or some other lame excuse (all recorded in a notebook and A/V if possible/legal). Get fired and sue the pants off the business for religious discrimination. Get paid out of court a lot of money. Find a better job. Win, win, win.

No offense to anyone, but Christians are some of the most closed minded people I have ever met. I did a local event once, and the local minister came up to me and ended up screaming at the top of his lungs in the convention center that I was the devil's concubine (his exact words) and going straight to hell. Sure would be nice if they remembered that there are 4000 organized religions on this planet - and gasp! some of us have different views!

Defending on where in the South (US) you are, there may not be much recourse for this guy. It wouldn't be unusual for him to get fired for something like this and have the local court find in favor of the employer. Of course they would use some BS reasons, but unless he has some serious resources in order to afford the appeals to get it to a higher court out the local jurisdiction, he may be unable to get any legal relief. There are many places like this in the South. The people, police, judges, and local government are all of one mind. Kinda like the real and very dark underbelly of Mayberry.
Religion is a protected class in ALL states of the US. That means your employer cannot discriminate against or fire you based on your religion, regardless what that religion is.

Well, a person can sue anyone for anything if they have enough money. To actually win the lawsuit, they have to have proof. So many comments on here saying to sue, but without money for a lawyer and evidence that it happened, there's no case. To get the EEOC involved requires evidence, and getting that evidence is the difficult part.

FYI that teaching about love and faith in christ, suuuuper condescending. Where in the US do you suppose anyone has been allowed to not hear about christ? And the history of this 'teaching' is filled with horror stories. Believe what you want, but for the love of pete there's zero need for the teaching.
