If you've ever tried to call a cat somewhere in a foreign country, I'm sure you've noticed that they don't always react. Why? Because apparently international cats react to different sounds.
In England, they say "chh-chh-chh". In Israel, they say "ps-ps-ps". As for India, they say "meow-meow". Each country gets a cat's attention with different noises, and these were just a couple examples! Keep on scrolling for a list of how to call cats in a bunch of different countries, compiled by Bored Panda.

Pisicuta, pis, pis ,pis te-am vazut aseara in vis... It means "Kitten, pis pis pis, I've seen you last night in my dream". This is a traditional song
Sa nu fim rai @Ples Alin, se mai intampla sa si gresim :) nici eu nu stiu foarte bine engleza
Load More Replies...It's quite the same here in the Philippines. We sound it here as "pss pss pss". I dunno if that's how Romanians say it though. :)
We also call them "pisu" or how I'm used to call them "tzi-tzu".
Load More Replies...American here. Guess my parents adopted me from Romania, too! :)
Load More Replies...We also caling like kac kac kac or kss kss kss, and saying that really fast :)
Yes,that dousnt sound good in Arab countries.
Load More Replies...Every time I say Kiss kiss kiss to my cat, he either moves closer to me or nudges heads with me, so I think that’s a sign
I didn't put those question marks, lol,,,**
Load More Replies...In my region we also use ci ci/tsi tsi instead of the above. But only to unknown cats. My cat usually reacts to "are you hungry?'"
Hahaha mine reacts to the sound of packages opening!
Load More Replies...I'm glad they posted this - I heard a Polish neighbour do this a few times and I had assumed she was making a noise like rattling a box of biscuits. I like the thought of kitties understanding different languages!
Me too! But rattling the box of treats (or a can being opened) always works better.
Load More Replies...Oh my! If you say it, it will sound like noise we make to call a cat, but spelling is so funny! We spell it kici-kici (from word kicia, which is another name for cat)
Yes, my grand-mother use this to call the cats ! And of course kotek / kotka
I would hate to meet this cat in a dark alley at night! He looks as if he could put a serious hurting on you!
Me too, cuz the Japanese lady that lived across the courtyard from me would yell, 'Hey, hey, hey!' and pretty soon her old tom would show up. Of course, this is in the US.
Load More Replies...This means: kitty, come here! While the onomatopea for cat is 'nya' or sometimes 'nyan'.
No this post is about what you say to get a cat's attention, not necessarily nyan or whatever call like miao, mew, etc
Load More Replies...Repetition. They don't really understand our words, but just like pavlovs dog, an animal understands things that are repeated. Also our tone of voice
Load More Replies...As someone from northeast China, I instantly thought of miaomiaomiao too. But mimi also works. It's more for a kitten where miaomiao is just for cats in general
Load More Replies...I put this through Google Translate and it had been translated as 'Seconds and seconds'
Poooooeeess poes poes poes. Poooooeeeeesss poes poes poes. :'D (pronounce it like poo's)
Pooss, pooss pooss... my cat is giving me weird looks now, and it's your fault! Lol
Load More Replies...In Sri Lanka, because of our Dutch legacy, we too say 'Poos, poos, poos' to cats whom we call 'Balala' in written language.
That's correct..! Only my 92-years old granny who lives in the mountains, calls cats "Muschi"... LOL...!!
This is great - such an extraordinary example of how language develops and takes hold across our wonderful planet. (Love the Grump!)
actually in ukraine we say kyts kyts kyts from word kytsunia (kitty) and also kis kis kis from word kisa (kitty)
Yes, but I think you are saying the same thing - keets in English reads as "kyts", because "ee" reads as "y". The post is meant to tell English people how to pronounce it, not how to write it :)
Load More Replies...And endlessly amusing to me always because one term for breasts is pronounced "Tsitsi" so it's as though you're calling out for your runaway pair of boobs.
the hungarian word is 'cicc' from "cica' (kitty) .. it's weird to see 'tsits' but the pronunciation is correct by the way. and André Tóth was correct as well... "cici"... oh, how I hate this word for boobs :D
Load More Replies...this picture should be for #11 (Turkish) because it is a Turkish street and this is a typical Turkish relax mode sitting which we call "tasaklari yayarak oturma" meaning sitting by laying the balls" :))
It name is Tombili and lived in Kadiköy, Istanbul. Tombili died 1. August 2016. People love it so much and It was a mascot of Kadiköy. People put its sculpture after it was died. kedi-tombi...89615b.jpg
It actually works in pairs like bish-bish bish-bish and we use Kiss to make them go away.
Hahaha true but Tunisia is not Sahara why you put this picture of desert cat ? Check out Tunisia on google
Tunisia has very different climates, the sand cats live in the Tunisian desert. We don't have them as pets.
Load More Replies...None of that these my cats pick him in back of me 106 Westland place apartment seven Mesa Az85201
In Philippines, we are used to calling BESH-BESH-BESH those animals who steal our boyfriends. haha!
Yes they are, but we don't hold wild animals as pets. This picture is totally misleading.
Load More Replies...This is not a tunisian cat, this is asavge cat, from the Desert. The one in the photo is Yoda, a tunisian cat, adopted from the street ^_^ WP_003277-...3f07ad.jpg
They are Sand Cats and a highly endangered animal...
Load More Replies...As an American... this is true, I hear this all the time...usually by people who have no business near a cat.
You should hear my mom call kittykittykitty. It comes out as a trill. Every cat in the neighborhood thinks she's a bird
Load More Replies...LOL that's what we say in America, but this kitty is Maru, from Youtube and he's from Japan!
I call mine with the "ts ts ts" sound. Wasn't really sure how to type that but I think most people will know what I mean.
Ya, generally I click my tongue/snap my fingers, make the smooching sound, or say "ki-ki-ki." All appear to be equally effective ;p
I have done this, but normally just click my tongue on the roof of my mouth. Almost like a tsk-tsk-tsk sound but shorter.
USA, west coast. I have never heard anyone say the "here," when serious about calling a cat, just "kitty kitty kitty," repeated about a dozen times. The call sounds very rapid and high pitched.
You don't. In the UK, including England it's a variation on Psswsssws Psswsssws Psswsssws. It's accompanied by holding your hand oud out with your thumb upermost ond rapidly rubbing your thumbver the tips of your first two fingers.
Load More Replies...I've never heard this in my whole 26 years in England! Puss puss puss puss puss, yes, chh chh chh chh chh, no.
Because you're from Africa, where you have lions and you don't really want to call them.
Load More Replies...Never heard anyone here do that, lol! Maybe puss, puss, puss,,,, or a tongue click, but I don't know what this is meant to sound like,,,chh!?
I've never said that, and I was born in the UK. We use a teeth-sucking sound like tssst-tssst-tssst.
If its a tongue click or kissing noise, than that`s also here in Romania and i think in more countries. Maybe it`s the most common, universal calling sound.
Actually no, more like a similar kissing sound with lips.. Micio micio is like the childish version of "cat cat"
Tsk- tsk-tsk is actually whst i hear up north people calling cats with
I always called a cat "kss-kss-kss" and I am from Latvia. "Minka-minka" is an old school nowadays used by old people or in a country side.
In South Africa we also go kss-kss-kss, only found out it was different in other countries when I was in Ireland and they called their cats the way we call over dogs, yes this is also different.
Ksss ksss kss it is. haven't even heard the old people doing the minka thing
Hey there's an app called "bread kittens" that looks exactly like this, just in real life!!
Face off! I don't know which side to look at. They are both perfectly beautiful! Would you have two names for this kitty?
Forgot Canada. We use "ps-ps-ps" or "kitty-kitty-kitty" or 3 consecutive tongue click noises
This is one of the most interesting and beautiful cats I have ever seen!
Actually my grandma uses mats mats to scare other cats coming in our garden
I love this one, I will name my next cat Bishito! If that cat ever goes to Mexico, it'll be very confused. lol
Aqui en México le llamamos : "Rrrrrrrr -Rrrrrrrrr" o "Minino-Minino"
Where I'm from, we do č-č-č. I'd say both variants are equally correct.
Load More Replies...A) That cat is probably the happiest citizen (if not the only one) of the Czech republic. From now on, anytime I sing 'Soft Kitty', this is the one to imagine. B) You, people, yes, officially it's či či či (chi-chi-chi), but who says that? I've always said č-č-č (aka the one written above in the picture), anyway, there isn't a noise more effective to summon a cat than the one of an opening fridge door. We all know that AND it applies on practically EVERY pet. Case closed.
LOL I didn't even notice, and was about to make a greek pic to post!
Load More Replies...This looks like the cat from this commercial, especially at the end https://youtu.be/Qe88s3tpH0A
In Serbia we call them by saying Mac-mac-mac (said with a c that sounds like a German tz for example)
I was telling that to my husband! Im now in USA and any cat pay me attention when a said michi- michi -michi like in Ar gentine
notice that all of them (almost) come in three short words. Apparently cats universally respond to repeating, short sounds.
I called "Pss-pss-pss' out my back door last night, like I usually do, and got both of my cats and a third one trotting up to the door... ;-)
You should add Indonesia.. We called it.. Umm.. I don't know how other people called their cat
I just do the thing where you put the tip of your tongue to the roof of your mouth and suck back making the tsk tsk sound. I do that for everything though. I call people over like that too..
