2016 iPhone Photography Award Winners Prove Again Amazing Photos Can Be Taken Without Expensive Camera
Think that you need a fancy camera to take a good picture? EHHH WRONG! Turns out an iPhone is enough to shock people with your sick photography skills, and the winners from the 2016 iPhone Photography Awards (IPPAWARDS) can prove so.
Just recently, the 9th Annual IPPAWARDS ended, and the winners have been announced. From simple landscape photos to photos of adorable animals - all of them are absolutely amazing. Take a look for yourselves below.

So beautiful---and so astonishingly detailed---I thought I saw the grasses sway in the (light) breeze----but that is not consistent with the rest of the picture! So my eyes were playing tricks on me!!

Is it just me, or does the grass seem to oblivious to the wind and, in fact, almost seems to be bending into the direction from which the umbrella insinuates it is coming?

Never owned an iPhone, so no idea if there's any special app, filter, or whatever for this, but to me it looks like multiple overlapped exposures, from slightly different points of view (on an arc).

These are wonderful, but the iphone is hundreds and hundreds of dollars, how is that not an expensive camera?

I think the point was that great photography can be done regardless of equipment, and these awards value talent in composition, a good eye, etc., over strict image quality given by expensive lenses. Also, to be fair, the iPhone may be expensive, but the camera in it is not (in terms of quality), it's still a phone camera (even if it's a decent one at that).

Most of these are using a filter of some kind, its pretty obvious. I have an iphone and you don't get the majority of those effects without some kind of filter or editing. Great pics though.

Photographers edit their picture, so it's not a big deal. Sometimes you need some extra contrast to make the pictures more alive or to enforce what you want to express with the final piece. However the point of this post is that you should know how to take pictures even if you have a potato (thirds, golden ratio, etc). The basics of composing are important everywhere, so the editing is not that important, but sometimes cropping helps for example.

As a publisher I can tell you that we can't use iPhone photos because their resolution is not good enough for full page printing (the size of copy paper). Samsung phones can however.... When iPhone catches up, I'll buy one. Love the product, hate the image quality.

Professional cameras can cost upwards of $2-3,000 without even including the price of lenses, so in comparison, an iphone is most definitely on the cheap end.

Logistically speaking, most high-profile awards have very strict image quality selection criteria, so it's quite likely that an iPhone photo would be rejected simply due to resolution, or image noise, or something even more arbitrary, like "must be taken with a DSLR". Conceptually, though, that is a very good point :D.

They were all wonderful photos and it doesn't surprise me that these images could be captured on a regular type camera. I've always enjoyed taking photos at random myself and have only ever used regular type cameras as well.
