Banker Doesn’t Believe This Black Woman Is An Architect, So He Refuses To Cash Out Her Paycheck

We’ve all heard the disappointing and sometimes horrifying stories of people shopping while Black, driving while Black, and even walking while Black. But what about banking while Black? Trish Doolin, an architect from Kirkland, Washington, was recently trying to cash her first paycheck from a new job at a KeyBrank branch in Seattle when the employee serving her proceeded to question the authenticity of both the check and her career – far more than what would normally be considered ‘standard procedure.’ Rather than simply asking for her ID, the teller attempted to contact the HR department of her Philadelphia-based employer, asked Doolin a series of invasive questions, and decided to hold the check for a whole 9 days “just to be safe” when it was all through. Having only been a customer with the bank for 29 days, she was understandably shocked.

“I live in a world where, no matter what’s in my brain or purse, no matter how I wear my hair… I’m still black. People still clutch their purses when I walk past,” Doolin told Buzzfeed News after going public with her frustration on social media. KeyBank has since claimed to “not tolerate discrimination,” but Doolin is not convinced, and has reported that she will be switching banks.

Debates have now broken out over whether this woman’s treatment was in order, or borderline racist. Scroll down to find out more.

This is Trish Doolin, an architect from Kirkland, WA, who claims a bank in Seattle discriminated against her

It all started when she entered the KeyBank branch to deposit her first paycheck from a new job…

Some people couldn’t agree more that her experience was a classic example of corporate racism

Others, however, say the bank teller involved was merely following ‘standard procedure,’ or were unsure

Was this encounter in line with policy, or severely out of it? Tell us below!

My wife is African American "black" and we live in East Tennessee. I'm am still astonished of the ignorance of racism that we live in. I have seen nasty looks and words when were in an all Caucasian neighborhood directed at me and she gets the nasty when were in all African American neighborhood. Racism knows no bounds, color, or Creed. So honey let me apologize for that ignorant person. (The way to stop racism...starts with our children)

I'm a white woman w a diverse set of family, friends and students. I will have totally normal experiences in a business when alone. On another visit to the same location, with a tan, brown or black companion, we're treated w suspicion, derision and disdain. I've had to speak to branch managers about rude/prejudiced tellers, using precise examples. It's easy for a white person to say that reports of racism are exaggerated when they haven't had to negotiate life with a darker than white complexion. A bank has protocols, of course, but the word choice and body language when double checking information reveals the employee's bias. First paychecks are frequently in paper, before direct deposit gets set up. processed.aadvised folks w

When in doubt, you do a standard checkup, calling the company and see if the deposit is legit. You don`t give the customer the third degree.

this is bs for this lady to have to go through. SOME of this was standard procedure like holding the check. But to call someone into a private office, take all their information, call their place of business and DEMAND a verification of employment. that is total horse pucky! she has just as much of right to complain and be upset about this as anyone else would if it happened to them (which funny you don't hear about anyone else having this problem but minorities) and for anyone who thinks this is all just "SJW SNOWFLAKE CRYBABY" stuff. go back to fox news. im sure you are missed.

In recent weeks I've lunched with a black woman I have started working with at city hall. I've never seen the bizarre behavior she has endured in my life and I am 60, certainly lunched with black women before. In one situation, after many small incidents, the man who was supposed to serve her literally walked out of the eating area, off to some other job responsibility. She had to chase him down to get her food. She has so much grace and poise, I was stunned. And yet, it was so close to that line that if I'd said something, he'd have insisted he was just forgetful. So yeah, this stuff is happening MORE, not less. That's why *I* kneel too.

It can take 6 weeks to set up direct deposit. She needs a new bank. This is way overkill.

The actual message of this notwithstanding: the USA "have probably the most antiquated payment system in the whole world" (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-07-26/why-can-t-americans-give-up-paper-checks). It is hard to believe that in the year 2017 anyone would be using paper checks for any purpose. Despite some lonely advocates for checks, there is just no rationale of using them any more. With a simple, typically for both ends charge-free wire transfer, the above situation would not have happened – while offering perfect safety and verifiability for both ends, too!

In France we use paper checks also and apparantly more often than in Us. No problem at all. With all advantages attach to this way of payment. If it's necessary, all French banks can easily check the validity in either direction.

i have received insurance checks/irs checks that were for more than i had in my account and they put a 5 day hold on my check. no interrogation. just "i'm sorry Ms. Haskins but we are going to have to put a five day hold on this check because you don't have the funds in your account to cover it." "but we can release $XXX.XX of the check to you if you need us to" but 9 nine days? it doesn't take 9 days to verify funds. it might take a day or two. and then to call her into an office and interrogate her? i don't know if it was because she was a black female architect or not. all i can say is I'm a white female receptionist and i've never been questioned as to the validity of any check I've ever given my bank.

She was new to the bank. It some takes a pay cycle for everything to get into place. I write one or two checks a year. They usually clear within 24 hours really depending on when the business makes their own deposit. I can see by the stamp on the check when they were presented. This is what is is like in the United States. Race always matters. While one might thing 'those' kind of people are the ones who should be questioned, it has happened to the former President of the United States as well. It has happen to me, an eleven year military Veteran.

No, that would be called Banking while a Brand-NEW client! As a banker, these seem legitimate questions to ask, and I have asked the same oles. I have NEVER actively accused a client of being a fraudster. While I feel this reaction was a BIT over the top, she should have expected her first few paychecks at a new bank to be held. Trust, but verify. Standard procedure when we're unable to verify info given by a client. A paycheck the size of the one received by an architect would be larger than your average blue-collar check. No one cares about her race.

Come on - seriously??? Why not put a hold on the check and explain that (politely) to the customer no matter what color of skin. Done. Why interrogate her? Why humiliate by saying/implying that the company's HQ is in another city? Why say "I'll hold it for NINE days - just in case"? In case of what? Jesus - the teller even said that she didn't believe that this woman was an architect! The entire thing was insulting and I would have 1. changed banks asap and 2. asked to speak to the bank manager about the rude behavior of the teller. There are bank employees in this feed - many who replied that they would NEVER treat a person like this and that it definitely is racism.

I worked in banking for 20 years, but that was at least 20 years ago. It used to be SOP with a new account and a large check. They will usually make a small amount available, with the rest coming available in increments over the next 7-10 days. It's a safety measure against check kiting. While I'm sure the system is a lot faster than it was when I was a banker, the check still has to go from the bank it is deposited at, to the local clearing house, to its home clearing house, to the bank it was drawn on, and then back to the customer. Then the customer must have time to dispute the validity of the check, and if the check is fraudulent, the process then proceeds in reverse to return it to the bank that accepted it. If she must deposit another paper check, there should be no issue, but most likely, she'll be on direct deposit by then.

Pretty awful story! But what is also awful is they still use checks in the US! They sent people to the moon almost 50 years ago, but still aren't able to do banking like they were living in 2017. A system like this facilitates groundless suspicion, bad customer treatment and even racism when the teller is a horrible person.

It's common practice for banks to put a hold on a questionable check as a security measure to ensure the money comes through. The check is not money, but a promise of money. Sometimes a bank likes to cover their butt by making sure the promise is kept and the money shows up. The hold is actually better than the alternative if you as the consumer use the money you think you have and the check doesn't clear because then the bank takes the money back from you.

Who the hell pays in Cheques these days , Not even social services , EFT that's the only way ,, if it was a cash cheque the info of the bank account should come up , standard procedure stuff .. Don't understand people having to wait for a Cash cheque if non negotiable then you would wait.. This all sounds relatively rude treatment of her.. He would have to use defamatory racial slurs at her to be racist in the eyes of the law , but we all now racism is only skin deep .. It lays quite shallow just beneath the surface not too deep and peoples attitudes towards each others races are pretty condescending at times.. Pretty much the whole planet is racist to a large degree ,, Now don't deny it !!

It's not only the skin colour ... strangers of any kind are suspects as nobody in N.A. trusts the other! We immigrated to Canada from Switzerlkand, had to prove that we invest $ 350K, own 650K in available funds to found a company and employ people. What we all did. Despite this we were not able to lease a truck, to get a bank account right away, to get credit cards or a phone etc etc. We paid $ 60K for a working truck for business and were punished to pay it cash and a tax for "luxury" cars. We waited a year to be connected to the outside world, 18 months for permits (road, water etc) ... We found the property as a dump and had to pay a lot for garbagae others left even outside of it, on crown land ... etc etc Every 6 months we had to report in details what we had done ... Welcome investors!

We are all so quick to accept this story as being 100% truthful, when in fact a ton of stories from the past 2-3 years have been proven false in nature. Stories made up just ot get donations or attention. Who verified this account of actions by the bank before they printed this story ?

Seriously? She was a new customer at the bank, the article says she had been a customer there only 29 days. That, in itself, would be sufficient to explain the bank clerk's extra caution. Why should everyone immediately assume it's because she was black, without the slightest evidence?

Yes, the US seems to have a very old-fashioned banking system. Sending cheques around is pre-historic. But it seems the US is getting direct payment, something most Europeans countries already have for decades. Now, if they make their banks safe and stable enough, they could even use IBAN numbers for their bank accounts. With those you can make direct payments to all countries in the world that also use IBAN numbers, like all EU countries and many Arab nations, but also Brazil. It would make banking a lot cheaper and safer.

Their banking system is pre-historic but they have SWIFT numbers, they don't need IBAN numbers. Australia and NZ don't use IBAN numbers either. In fact, IBAN might be better renamed EBAN!

To me, there is too little information to make a call about the bank's agenda. The way the architect described her experience was in prose form. Just give me the facts and correct details of the conversation and let me decide. I know this happens; I know people are profiled like this every day and there is a reason she felt as she did. Whether her feelings are from her life experience or THIS experience I cannot say without further information. We are so quick to jump to conclusions about these things- but ultimately she wins because she IS a woman with means and she DID have a valid check. So maybe the bank rep will think twice next time.

It sounds insane, but in Texas, people routinely write checks - even for groceries, which strikes me as intensely stupid. However they do have a way of dealing with it that's pretty clever. If you bounce a check, you don't get to renew any of your licenses until you make good. This doesn't only mean driver's licenses, but ALL licenses issued by the state, like licenses to practice law or medicine. It works.

Concept: the ideal of all being equal means that we should strive to all treat other people with the same consideration, regardless of gender, skin colour, religious affiliation or lack thereof, age, ability, etc. Reality: that's not what happens, and we have to acknowledge when people are actually treated with LESS consideration because of any of those factors. Is that really a difficult thing to grasp? Cause I see a lot of bigoted idiots trying to screw people with that thinking.

I once won money from the internet... yes one of those emails told me I won and I was like yeah right but turns out I actually did, luckily they gave me it even past the due date and paid for all the documents to go back and forth to be signed via fedex. This was back in the dotcom days and I went to cash a big cheque in american dollars at british bank. The teller was new and she was literally about to cry, probably as she didn't know how to process it. I got taken into a room and the manager lightly probed as he processed it. I didn't take offence and probed back, still not believing it was actually real and asked how long before I could spend it!

Accounts like these are why I have a hard time believing that racism exists to the level people say. I'm a pasty white guy and banks hold almost every check I deposit, and I've been their customer for years, that's why you do direct deposit. Banks can't just verify checks at the push of a button, if they could there would be none of this Nigeria fraud where people cash a check, send money back, and then realize the check was a fraud. Rather than immediately claiming it's racism, why not ask if it happens to others? In this case it does, to almost everyone.

In 1980 I accepted a job to work in Miami, FL from a manpower supplier in Kansas City, MO. I had to move from Maryland in order to accept the position, which I did. I am a white 40 year old man and upon arriving in the Miami area, opened up a bank account so that I could cash checks and pay bills, such as rent and electricity. ALL my checks were issued from a bank in Kansas and as such, were subject to a 10 day hold. The person in this story may feel that discrimination was at play here, and it may well have been, however they need to know that when you open up a new account and start depositing out of state checks, questions will arise. Florida is particularly cruel on this but they have good reason. Florida experiences many snowbirds and tourists and dealing with checks from out of state banks is dangerous as you cannot always determine on the spot if the funds exist in the bank from which the checks have been drawn.

I'm kind of 50/50 on this (it's a Libra thing lol). It does seem a bit extreme, but then this is HER side of the story. I think it's a "you had to be there" scenario. Were they pleasant? Were they professional? Did they apologize for the delay. I mean really, based on the looks of this woman (highly professional and obviously has her sh*t together), I can't imagine they thought the check was fraudulent just because she is black. I am not black, so I cannot know how that feels. However, I have lots of black friends and a couple of them do play the race card when things go wrong. Sometimes I agree, sometimes not. But what I want to know is what do I play when things go wrong in my life? I guess because I'm a woman and I'm older, those can be my excuses. There's always something. Always an excuse. Always a reason. One can only hope and pray that one day we will live in a better and more peaceful world.

If you're White, you have ZERO idea how or how often racism happen to non-white people, unless you listen - which is exactly what you're supposed to do here, btw. It's nice that you pray, how about you listen and learn instead?

They'd only need to question her if she wanted the cheque cashed. By the sounds of it, they called her back to the bank to interrogate her. If she deposited the cheque to her account, they could have just called her up and told her they couldn't credit the money to her account until the account cleared.

Definitely out of line for the bank to do what they did. Verifiable answers to any of those out-of-line questions wouldn't have made any difference anyway if the policy was "nine days no matter what". I do think many minorities play the race card more often than warranted but not in this case. Draw (architect--he he) your own conclusion.

She needs to switch banks as soon as possible. There is NO excuse for this. I bank at Chase and they're considerably more civilized than any of the others. ... I'm 54 and white, and when I went to buy a new car for cash (because if I can't afford to pay for it outright I won't buy it), the salesman asked how I was planning on financing it - I waved my checkbook. Then he said he had to do a credit check - I told him he didn't need to, I was paying outright. The corker? He said he had to talk to my husband. Bullshit, I said. ... I barged into the manager's office, told him what happened and left. ... They are NOT the only dealership in town.

"but we can release $XXX.XX of the check to you if you need us to" but 9 nine days? it doesn't take 9 days to verify funds. it might take a day or two. and then to call her into an office and interrogate her? i don't know if it was because she was a black female architect or not. all i can say is I'm a white female receptionist and i've never been questioned as to the validity of any check I've ever given my bank.

That wasn't because she's black. She got all prissy over nothing. She's a bitch. Typical black woman (yes I know, very stereotypical).

You seem not to have read the entire post. But at least you compensated telling about your own experience with something having nothing at all to do with the situation under discussion.
