Hi! My name is Mira! I have been trying to live a more sustainable lifestyle for a few years now. And if you have ever tried it, you know how hard it can be.

But I truly believe the first step towards creating less waste is being well-informed on the subject, and being aware of the specific issues and problems. So I started researching online and sometimes the information could be truly overwhelming and rather gloomy. After I would spend some time reading, I would have no willpower to live, let alone take any action whatsoever. The other issue was the depressing manner in which a big part of the information was presented, so it didn't seem likely that anyone would want to share it with their friends or family in order not to ruin their day as well.

You can find my previous post about my zero waste comics by clicking here.

When my daughter was 6 months old i got so annoyed with the idea of buying new clothes for kids, seeing as they outgrow them every couple of months, I've been buying nothing but second hand for my three children ever since, some things are sitting in those thrift stores brand new with tags, ridiculous. the amount of waste in our culture is horrifying. this goes double or any thing meant for children. i refuse to take part.

I went to a women university in Seoul and there they have a thrift store that sells preloved clothing apparel donated by students. Most Korean girls are trendy and I've found a lot of gems from that thrift store. I always told my friends that I got them cheap because it's like an achievement to me, lol~

So I said to myself—what if there was a way to represent useful information about climate change, sustainability, and the environment in a funny, colorful, and most of all accessible way? An approach that focuses on solutions, rather than problems. So that people will hopefully laugh, learn something new, and pass it along.

And that's how the Aware Animals webcomics were created. Every week I draw a different situation. Whether it's dealing with mountains of non-recyclable wrapping paper and paper bills, wanting to pack a waste-free lunch, buying second-hand clothes for environmental reasons, refusing a plastic grocery bag at the store, turning down plastic straws over and over again, or trying to repair broken items to prevent them from going to a landfill—the possibilities of new and exciting topics are endless.

I wish there was a way to recycle broken glass. For safety reasons, where I live the refuse collectors won't accept broken glass, we are told by the council to wrap it up and put it in the bin for non-recyclable waste.

I'm so sad to hear that! Here in Bulgaria even if it's not broken when you throw it away, it definitely does once you drop it in the container. So there are no regulations of that sort. May I ask which country do you live in?

Amount of water necessary to sustain cotton is enormous. In that cotton is often cultivated where water is scarce the environmental impact can be devastating, locally.

Most of the situations have happened either to me or to my super-supportive partner (you can probably recognize us as Mr. and Miss Fox) and others have been shared or suggested to us by our lovely community on social media.

My favorite part about this process is how much I learn from it myself: once while I do my research and then again from the lovely comments and lively discussions when the comics have been posted. I'm constantly overwhelmed by the positive feedback we've received and very, very grateful. Our main message is that no action is too small to make a difference and that positivity and awareness will bring us further along than guilt or blame. Tell that to my two Philips LED light bulbs that broke after 3 months. I've replaced them with generic LED bulbs that still work after 3 years or so. I haven't purchased any Philips since. On the other hand, up to a certain price, indeed quality is reflected by the price. My grandfather said "we're too poor to afford buying cheap things"...but that was in the old times when the world wasn't run by marketing and corporate brand CEO's and managers that need to buy a third or fourth mansion/yacht/car for themselves.

The world is really set up for those who have money. If you need to pay for something in installments then you pay more than someone who pays up front. You are also made to feel guilty for buying the cheaper, less environmentally friendly product because you don't have the money to buy the more sustainable resource in one go.

This is kinda 50/50. I've spent a pretty penny on some "high quality" things and have them break right after warranty. I've bought some cheap things that lasted a good long time. They just need to make seeing "reviews" easier when you go to the store lol

My mother in law sews our kids costumes or I make them from materials we have, after the holiday they go into the playroom closet. Dress up sleepovers are epic at our house! Not to mention people can consider donating them to children’s hospitals, shelters that house parents and children, foster cares, daycares, schools. It doesn’t need to be Halloween, sometimes a little person just needs to take a break from reality and put on a cape ;)

What's worth adding to that picture is: If you already have some tote bags or food containers at home, you don't have to go buy new ones just because they are advertised as better than ones you have! If you have plastic container it's good! Don't have to get new one made with metal/wood. If you have glass bottle at home (and you're not scared to carry it with you) it's great, don't need to buy new metal one. Use what you have until you can't use it anymore

A lot of people do a balloon release in memory of someone they have lost, it always makes me cringe thinking of where the balloons will end up. I would never say anything because people have to grieve in their own way but I have left strict instructions that when I die no balloons or Chinese lanterns are to be released.

Two years ago my colleagues prepared a surprise for me at the office. They have put balloons and other cute stuff. One of the balloons stayed for a really long time deflated on the gound in the office (my colleague just decided to keep it). Commercials show toothbrushes with a lot of toothpaste on it because that way, customers will think that they need that amound to brush their teeth. As a result, they will be out of toothpaste quicker and they buy more toothpaste. Which makes the toothpaste company happy because they're selling more toothpaste

This is the reason you have to tell people when you don't like their gifts. I know it might sound rude, but otherwise they will keep wasting their money, their efforts and some natural resources to give you things which don't achieve their objective : to bring you joy. For years, my mother used to buy lychees, and I ate them so they would not be wasted, but I hated it... and she kept buying them because she thought I liked them. So much pain, for so long, and for no reason...

In Germany, all businesses are required to print the "bon" for you. They just throw it away when you decline. A new law from 2020, generated a major uproar - because it was required also for minor purchases such as in bakery stores. Now, a year later, the receipts are still printed but thrown away since nobody wants them for personal purchases...

Beginning of 2020 Germany was in an uproar: All merchandise had to be registered and the customer had to receive a rereipt. Of course this cash registers in the bakery stores mostly use thermal paper. Now this causes a lot of trash and sincerely, hardly anyone wants and needs the receipt for a personal purchase of a donut. It was aimed against tax fraud...

I put my shampoo bar in a small net - makes it easy to use and can later hang to dry in the shower, this way it keeps longer. When travelling, I just put it inside a small metall box, net and all. I have found for myself that my skin tolerates solid shampoo and soap much better than any kind of liquid cleaner as my psoriasis seems to have a problem with the emulsifiers, even in products for sensitive and allergic skin. I would recommend a try!

Actually, the ecological footprint of solid shampoo is only marginally better than that of liquid one. The detergents in it are the problem, not so much the larger packaging size. The aim should be to use only those hygiene products really needed, and only as much of them as really needed. I for example have given up using shower gel unless I need to remove dirt. To feel fresh, shower feel is hardly needed.

We should make biodegradable packaging instead. Since we're used to treating packaging like packages, it can get dirty quickly, and you wouldn't know what germs you're eating, like e.coli, so using natural materials as packaging is a better alternative.

A lot of refrigerated items that seem like cardboard or paper contain wax/plastic in them that help keep the item cold. So, this addition to the paper is unfortunately non-recyclable.

Budget kind of factors in here, tripling the cost of your milk when every cent counts is a good way to trade your own health for environmental health. And yes at least here glass bottle of milk is around three times as expensive.

It's all a matter of perspective. I have a plastic dish brush I have been using for ten years now. When it gets to dirty, I put it in the dishwasher. How long does a wooden one last. Also, coffee filtered through paper is more healthy according to recent studies.

    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I think it's wonderful that you've been using the same plastic brush for so many years! :) It's super unpractical and unnecessary to throw away something only to replace it with a new and shiny "eco-friendly" version. But when the time comes it's good to know what options we have to replace it with. :) The wooden brush actually survives surprisingly long if you put oil on it before you first use it in order to protect if from the water.

Why are silicone baking mats and molds better than a wooden kneading board or the metal baking trays and molds?

    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I think the metal baking molds are absolutely fine :) This was suppose to be a better alternative to the baking paper since it turns out it's often covered with a thin layer of silicone, so it can't be composted. It also can't be recycled, cause it's oily. So silicone baking mats can be a good alternative for that since you use them for many years.

Chances of getting food poisoning in your own kitchen are pretty low if you aren't completely reckless. As long as you are carefull with raw meat, especially chicken and also fish and mushrooms, you are generally quite safe. If you are a vegetarian who doesn't like mushrooms, you'll have to try very hard to get it.

I was a librarian, and every morning before the library opened, we each had a couple of shelves to check through, that the books were properly shelved, by author, in alphabetical order. Then I found that a 'helpful' borrower, had shelved one row by size, from Big to Small!!!

Ear swaps should be struck from this list. Even if they feel great, they are terrible for actually removing earwax. Earwax exists to keep our keep our inner ears moistened so the skin doesn't dry and crack, as well as creating an acidic environment so bacteria can't survive. Your ears naturally clean themselves by using the motion of your jaw when talking and eating to shift older wax out. When you use ear swabs it shoves the wax deep into the ear and it gets stuck. Stop using ear swabs no matter if they are reusable or not.

Bamboo may sound good, but in reality, they are unregulated. We bought a lot of bamboo stuff when we had a child, then found out that there's no EU regulation that covers bamboo. When a Spanish team tested some bamboo-items, they found that they released way more toxins that plastic materials (which is regulated). Just saying, don't trust bamboo just because they look like wood, a lot of chemicals are used to prevent it from breaking down and to shape it.

Absolutely. Since tooth powders are generally seen as obsolete, they are almost exclusivly marketed to consumers who want an "alternative" or "natural" product. That means manifacturers feel free to add a lot of natural sounding ingredients, like chalk or pumice and omit substances that might scare their customers away, like flouride. I'm not trying to shame natural products. It's rather that each industry has their own tactics of ripping consumers off, whether it's sold as organic or not.

Bamboo tooth brushes or generally wooden toothbrushes are not only a health hazard, as they for an excellent breeding ground for bacteria. If you have to use them, use seperate ones for mornings and evenings, so that they can dry out completely. They aren't generally more sustainable either. Often the bamboo is treated with resins making it difficult to recycle. Even more often, the bristles are made from non-recyclable material half synthetic materials misleadingly called bamboo viscose. Sometimes they use pig's bristles, which aren't sustainable either and an even better environment for bacteria, as they are hollow.

That's a common myth. Fruit juices, even organic ones with no added extras, are generally not healthier than soda. This is especially true for children. Seriously, I'm a dentist after only five years in this job I can't keep track of how many times I've seen young kids with completely rotten teeth - and along with them their honestly caring and health concious parents who just didn't imagine apple juice could do that. But even for adults, the sugar in juices is not healthy. Eat your fruits and vegetables and enjoy juices like soda - rarely. I'm not talking about syrups. I think everyone knows that they should only be consumed in very small quantities.

I would say it's funny if it was not so profoundly sad: every year there's always so much happy and joyous welcoming of the New Year celebrated..... celebrating what? The coming of more pain, suffering, cruelty, injustice, plunder, and destruction, for sure. When will those New Year celebrations produce commitment to really new year???? - "Man is the most insane species. He worships an invisible God and slaughters a visible Nature without realizing that this Nature he slaughters is the invisible God he worships." - Hubert Reeves .... but I think that men know exactly what they are doing: they are not worshiping God, they are playing God while committing evil deeds.

Deforestation is for the most part done to make pastures for life"stock". Animal agriculture causes immense suffering to animals, enormous destruction of our planet, and causes chronic, painful inflammations in human body (such as arthritis), chronic diseases (such as diabetes), heart diseases/clogged arteries, and various cancers. Please adopt plant-bases (vegan) diet, or at least significantly reduce consumption of meat, dairy, and eggs.

omg. EWWWW... Please do NOT do this. That's just disgusting. Tissues are made from renewable products. Handerchiefs are either made from a synthetic material (plastic) or maybe some form of renewable product. You aren't saving anything. Carrying around a mucus filled bacteria laden wet piece of cloth is the worst thing you can be doing during a pandemic.

In the age of the Coronavirus pandemic, a reusable handkerchief is a ticking timebomb!! They are the quickest way to spread any disease. Once you put it back in your pocket, both your hands & pocket are contaminated. Every time you reach into your pocket, you are distributing bacteria & viruses. You use it again, put it in another pocket. Now it's contaminated. This is a horrible, hideous idea & I can't believe that Bored Panda would actually promote this. Tissues may not be the best environmentally, but at least they are safer as long as they are single use, plus they biodegrade very quickly.

That's not true. The variety was originally grown for eating. They don't taste that good, because they were bred mainly for size and storage, just like many other vegetables. They are still used in food products, but usually artificially flavoured ones.

Not everyone has space for a compost pile large enough to consume a typical household's kitchen and yard waste.

So if foxes live in the forest, is them just walking around hiking?

She's a fox, nature already gave her a protective coat as well as sturdy paws perfectly suited for outdoor travel, doesn't seem very sustainable for her to wear a dress, socks, and boots. I'll admit that a fox could find a backpack handy, but probably doesn't need a sleeping pad or coffee cup

This is just mean. Of all the things I miss, this what I miss the most.

Is this drawing to enforce the idea to take no "throw away" items on a hike?

I think so but I wasn't really sure. I can't see any other message here.

That is true, but considering they are friends she'd likely have an idea if this kind of gift would work for her friend. It's a thoughtful gift that she can use for years if she takes care of it properly. She could have bought her a "normal" gift such as a shirt and it never leave it's hanger. Any gift is a risk, but it is an attempt to give something that will be useful and bring them a little happiness. A menstrual cup definitely ticks those boxes and I wish I had been given one when I was a teenager.

That's probably something a woman should decide to buy on her own

Every southern lady knows one does not give such extremely personal gifts. Unless you are the fox's mother.

Could I ask why? I'm curious because I prefer tampons and find pads very uncomfortable

Damnit. I wish I had seen this BEFORE I got my IUD put in a few months ago. I have virtually no periods now. Which is a blessing from what I was going through.

I guess it's a good idea, but I can never imagine using one of these. I would not feel secure.

I thought that at first and decided to give it a try; several companies do 'buy one/donate one' thing where, if you buy one, they donate one to women in need so, even if it doesn't work for you, someone benefits. I never looked back. For the first time in my life, I can sleep the night on my first two days and not wake up like a murder scene has happened in my bed. I always had a problem with just feeling gross on heavy days - do not feel that way anymore. WAY more comfortable for me than tampons or pads, as well. Again, won't work for everyone, but I do recommend giving it a try. If anything, there have only been 2 documented cases of TSS since the menstural cup's invention in the 1930s and those were from improper usage.

I used these. Used them exactly as prescribed even used a different one between changes. Still got an infection so BAD almost lost my uterus! Doctor told me that that happens more often than not. They are dangerous!

No I did not hear that. What I just heard is that a mask is a deprivation of personal freedom.
