Aunt Offers Exposure Instead Of Payment But Her Niece Doesn’t Give Up, Uncovers Her Major Scam That Destroys Her Career And Marriage
I’ll never understand quantum physics, why my dad takes 15 years to buy milk, and jerks who try to take advantage of artists, offering exposure as payment.
When reddit user KindredCocaCola agreed to create some promotional material for her aunt’s business, she didn’t know what she was getting herself into. The lady tried to rob her of several thousands of dollars worth of work and was so full of herself, she even tried to turn KindredCocaCola’s family against her. But the artist handled everything like a pro and did everything in her power to deal with her toxic aunt.
What’s really amazing is, in the process of demanding what rightfully belongs to KindredCocaCola, she exposed how her aunt’s entire life is just one giant scam. Continue scrolling and read how everything unfolded in our heroine’s own words!
KindredCocaCola said things got weird from the start. “I did some initial sketches for her to see if we were going down the right path and she actually got sort of mad at me because I was wasting her time with non-finished products,” the artist explained. “I told her that’s kind of how I work because I don’t want to waste expensive materials on ideas that she may not like. I actually have this in text and she said ‘my time is just as valuable as your materials, so please don’t waste it.’ I was like OK, so I spent the next week doing a very elaborate oil painting from which her business logo would be taken. I even UPS-shipped it to her. She hated it and got mad at me again for wasting her time. I tried to explain to her this is why I like to do sketches so there’s no misunderstanding. She agreed this time and I finally came up with things she liked. I’d spent a lot of time on this project already, not so much that my grades were slipping but it was costing me time with my friends. So I did final versions of the oil painting for the office, did what I think is a really cool logo, and a really nice mock-up of the office mural. I was out quite a bit of money for the materials and shipping and it was very stupid of me to not follow up about the payment then.”
Next, the aunt accused KindredCocaCola of dragging her feet on the car magnet design. The artist said that she should take the logo to a local graphic design place and they could easily do it. “I also told her I thought we had the materials to make them at my school but I personally didn’t. She accused me of not working hard enough for her. I was really taken aback and just decided enough was enough and I would just stop doing things for her.”
“This is where things get really ugly. She contacted me out of the blue and thanked me for the advice on the magnets. She said that now she was ready for me to fly out and paint her office mural. I said that was pretty much impossible as I had classes and any decent mural painter could take my mockup and make it happen. She said she wanted me to do it. So I talked with my teachers to see if I could take a week off, all were supportive, so I looked up tickets and told Aunt Jay what it would cost to fly me out. She said that she assumed I would pay for it since I’d get to see my family anyways. I said I was really sorry but I just can’t afford it but maybe if she paid me for the work I’d already done for her, maybe I could see if my parents would split the cost of the ticket with me.”
Here’s what people said about the whole ordeal
She states that she "was positive she agreed to pay me". One of the life lessons I learned early on was Get It In Writing! Especially for anything involving family members. A verbal contract is the same as no contract. It is best that everyone found out exactly what she was doing before it got any worse.
Good lord, what a scummy b***h! Many years back, I started working for free for a budding author. Eventually, I explained that I couldn't afford to do it anymore. We worked out a price and pay schedule, put it on paper. Neither of us got rich from the enterprise, but there was mutual respect and honesty.

This is my everyday life struggle. I am a freelance designer (web+print) and project manager. Greedy people will step on you every chance they get. I have trouble keeping faith in humanity in general at the moment, honestly, but these people just weigh on my soul in a very destructive way. I just want to help honest small businesses. When I do, it's a huge satisfaction. So I keep it up. :)
Screwing freelancers by offering "exposure" is an old, contemptible scam. "Exposure"doesn't pay the bills or buy groceries. There are a lot of running jokes on the line of "Yes, I am a graphic artist. No, I don't work for free." I recall that Bored Panda had a posting about a conpany asking artists for embroidery designs and offering "exposure" as payment. Many of them responded with designs that said "Artists need to eat!" or some kind of "Up yours!"
This is one of those life lessons that i hope this person takes to heart. Never do business with friends/family....ever! There usually the first to rip you off and/or not pay. I know of numerous examples where transactions like this have soured. I get it...some people have a hard time believing they're related to unsavory human beings.
I stopped reading about ¾ of the way through. The artist was taken advantage of by a scammer. As usual, this scammer was scamming on multiple levels. Our culture rewards it if you don’t get caught (I’ve seen multiple CEOs brag about how they “broke the rules” on their way to success, in public interviews). It’s maddening and I’m glad this artist is getting out from under this toxic family member. Also glad that the scammer is being caught out for all her scamming. After seeing a number of biographical stories on companies and their success-story CEOs, I have a firm suspicion that the only difference between a person who does stupid risky s**t and a person who is a success... is whether they get caught before the money starts coming in. If they don’t, it becomes “a funny anecdote” about their “boldness” in “breaking the rules”, and they get worshipped for it. If they DO get caught, they end up being regarded as lazy scumbags who don’t want to do the hard work of playin by the rules.
This has been edited heavily from the original Reddit post, which is linked n the introduction. It does make somewhat more sense there, and there's an update if you visit her Reddit profile. What they don't say here, or at least if they do I missed it, is that this was a good two years ago, so no doubt things have changed in the meantime.

I'm happy for you. It feels good when a crook gets caught and stopped' unfortunately it's relatively rare.

don't downvote please but....it was dated 2 years ago on reddit why did it come up now?
1 you need to establish contract with clear price and flow of events with part payments at stages. 2 to smear/destroy might be fun and seem like a win but you will find ( especially w/internet ) that in future clients will be very cautious with you. immature to say the least. 3 you had choice to pull out well before continueing (showing a judge you were willing for some reason btw) with the oil painting part. sorry i am just being real. many would high five you for this but look real close and you might find they will handle you in a different way now knowing the extent of your unprofessionalness. um ... yeah.
This is so odd. The uncles marriage broke up, the aunt could be arrested, there was family drama and mayhem... but the person who posted is trying to get a payment for a few hours of work. It's like you are in a super hero movie and your car got crunched by a rampaging monster... you're sideline collateral damage in this drama
It isn't "a few hours of work". Designers go to school for this. Saying that they shouldn't get paid is like saying your lawyer shouldn't get paid for a few hours in court, or your doctor shouldn't get paid for a few hours of surgery.
