“Anyone Who Tries To Baby Themselves, It’s Over”: Arnold Schwarzenegger Slams Gen Z

It seems like every generation believes that the olden days were better and looks down on younger cohorts, stereotyping them as being lazier, weaker, or more immature than their older counterparts.

Arnold Schwarzenegger defends this nostalgic theory. In a recent interview on the Howard Stern Show, the former bodybuilder complained about “kids these days,” arguing that America was raising a “generation of wimps.”

According to the 76-year-old star, people these days are less exposed to “struggles,” which translates into weaker, less resilient characters.

“You can only strengthen your character and become a really strong person inside if you have resistance, if you fail, if you get up again and if you work hard,” he said.

Instead of leading a comfortable life, he said, the younger generations should “accept pain, misery, and discomfort” in order to become “tougher.”

“Anyone who tries to baby themselves and pamper themselves, it’s over. You’re never going to get there.”

The former governor of California believes that first-generation Americans perfectly embodied this definition of “toughness.”

“You can only strengthen your character if you have resistance, if you fail, if you get up again and if you work hard,” he said

The country became prosperous thanks to its workers, who were willing to tolerate adverse working conditions in order to bring food to the table.

“This is where ballsy women and men that went out there at five in the morning, and got up, and they struggled, they fought, they worked their butts off,” he explained.

“Is it people that slept in? Is it people that were wimping out? This, ‘Oh, I want to feel good. Oh, I want to be comfortable.’ No.”

He carried on: “That’s what made this country great. And so now, let’s continue this way. Don’t start creating a generation of wimps.”

Unlike first-generation Americans, he explained, “young kids” are not willing to make any sacrifices or deal with frustration

Schwarzenegger, who was born in Austria and was the son of the local chief of police, has explained how he disciplined his children when they were growing up.

When asked whether he was a strict father, the dad of five said: “For I think the way I grew up, I was lenient,” he said. “But I think for American standards, I was probably strict.”

One of the incidents he described was when Patrick, his eldest son, had his nanny make the bed instead of making it himself.

“So I came in one time, and the bed was made so immaculately that I looked at Patrick and said, ‘did you do that?’”

“And he said, ‘no I didn’t.’”

“So I opened up the doors, grabbed the mattress, and threw it off the balcony, down into the swimming pool.”

As he shared, his son then had to drag up the soaking wet mattress from the swimming pool, dry it, and make his bed.

The ex-Mr. Universe maintains that children should do many chores to become resilient in the future.

“I said the kids have to make their own bed, they have to scrub their own showers, they have to clean their own toilets, and they have to wash their own clothes.”

The Terminator star said that children should “make their own bed, scrub their own showers, clean their own toilets, and wash their own clothes”

He then recalled other examples that prove his strict character, such as unscrewing every lightbulb in his son’s bedroom after he repeatedly forgot to turn off the lights and putting his daughter’s shoes in the fire after she didn’t put them away.

The Terminator star believes that, when it comes to controversial parenting choices, the ends always justify the means. “Let’s go and teach kids to be tough, to go out and do sports, to struggle, and go through these kind of painful moments sometimes,” he highlighted.

While it’s important to be considerate of their feelings, he said, people shouldn’t “over-baby” their kids.

You can watch Schwarzenegger voice his opinion below

Schwarzenegger wasn’t the first high-profile millionaire to complain about youngsters. In 2017, Australian real estate mogul Tim Gurner said millennials spent too much money on avocado toasts instead of homes.

Similarly, in 2016, the phrase “snowflake generation” was added to Collins English Dictionary to describe “the generation of people who became adults in or after the 2010s, viewed as being less resilient and more prone to taking offense than previous generations.”

Many people agreed with the star’s analysis of the “snowflake generation”

Others, however, took issue with his words

"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers." Socrates, 470–399 BC It would appear the elder generation has thought this way for over 2000 years 🤔

Arnold, you are wrong—-and this is coming from a Boomer (late boomer 1960). Authoritarian parenting teaches kids nothing except how to avoid punishment. It’s also why so many kids go complete non-contact with their parents. Hell, it’s why I left home and went 100% NC with MY parents in January 1979, shortly after I hit 18! They’re both dead now, and all I felt when they were both gone was a great weight lifting off me. What you propose is absolutely NOT the way. Authoritative parenting, which is neither heavy-handed nor coddling, IS the way. Reasonable punishments that fit the “crime”. Reasonable rules. Being reasonable altogether, instead of playing like some kind of tin jesus and insisting on 100% obedience. Raising your children in a loving home instead of what amounts to a prison they can finally leave when they’re 18. You’ll be amazed at how your children will actually want to follow your reasonable rules, because they know you’re not the household dictator. You’ll have a great relationship with your children, because they won’t hate and resent you. As long as you manage to find the happy medium, and don’t become an overbearing helicopter parent, your kids will be fine.

KB, I love that juxtaposition of "authoritative" vs "authoritarian"! You're so right! I realized from your description that I was raised in an "...ive" household. My parents made the rules, and I followed them (mostly), but I also respected them (both the rules and the parents). I would even say I enjoyed being around my parents. I had always planned to raise my own kids that way, and I think, for the most part, I have. But, I came to the painful realization at some point, that every kid is very different, and sometimes I've had to be more "...ian" than I would have liked, because the "...ive" just wasn't working. My kid is very different than I was, or most kids for that matter. There is no one size fits all when it comes to parenting. All those books from people claiming they have the secret to raising virtuous and happy children have never tried to raise my kid.

With all due respect, there’s nothing wrong with chilling instead of hustling. We are so wealthy as a human kind, it’s about time to stop worrying and find happiness in small things. Sure, if it’s your desire to pursue greatness then go for it. Just don’t expect everyone to follow.

Pieces of s**t like DeSantis who want to hide the truth about our country and our world from the children, just because it is not pretty to his liking. I hope he doesn't win the election, or else I'm running off to Canada. Thank goodness for dual citizenship.

Kinda yes, but anyone who says this is required to live at least a month on minimum wage along with everything else that entails. Preferrably a year. Then get back to me with that 'don't be so sensitive' when you're trying to figure out whether you can still afford groceries or should go get that toothache checked out even though you don't have the money. It rubs me the wrong way when people who were born on the doorstep of the golden age in a country with a high living standard come whining about how everyone else is so sensitive.

Deliberately subjecting your kids to misery out of spite does not teach them resilience... it teaches them that the people who are supposed to love and protect them will hurt them. Then they grow up to have such major psychological issues they don't have functional adulthoods. To teach children responsibility and resilience, be an example to them and work with them.

Does he think the kids gave themselves the participation trophies? His generation or his children's generation came up with the idea. Think about that. There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving children a little something for participation. This boosts self esteem and confidence and maybe they will want to earn the ribbon next time. There does come a time when participation trophies are inappropriate and this is typically when kids are older.

Snowflakes? I’m sorry but do you have anxiety that’s the same level as a 50’s insane asylum patient? Do you deal with the trauma from school shootings? Do you have so much depression constantly surrounding you that your classmates and maybe even yourself are thinking about Killing themselves or cutting? I get it, your guys’ life was tough too. But don’t take it out on us. We’ve recognized that emotions are good, that trauma and anxiety and depression are unfortunately a part of life, and we’re already working toward fixing that. Maybe instead of breaking us down, the older generations could share some things that Gen Z and Gen Alpha can take into the future? Some hard earned wisdom? The whole point of learning from your elders is to learn how they lived, appreciate what they went through, incorporate what you can, and use that to help yourself grow. We can’t do those things if we’re constantly getting torn down.

The problem is that Schwarzenegger is mostly familiar with the kids that he meets around where he lives. Yes, the kids of the wealthy are like that. Both those who are on the Left and on the Right. When you are super wealthy, you live in a bubble and never have to hear or se anything that you don't like. Every other kid, meaning the other 95%, deal with life, do chores, usually work either for a living or for spending money, and actually are willing to engage with people with whom they disagree.

People for centuries have forced to dip their hands into acid to start the morning. A modern revolution lets you choose not to. However, kids should keep doing it daily because if they don't they get spoiled. Look at how fine and rational all the adults came out from that era!

I half agree with him and half not. Sure, the snowflake generation seriously needs to grow up. But on the other hand, just getting out there and 'working hard' doesn't mean s**t any more, like it did in the boomer days. Most people who spend thousands to get a degree either can't get a job, or they get one at a pittance. Not to say you shouldn't work hard at what you do, but just throwing yourself to the grind doesn't get the same results it used to.

Which YOUR generation invented, so take the part of the blame that is yours! I know of two families with GenX parents who had to fight the Boomer School Board to get their kids held back a grade so they'd actually learn the material. The Board wanted to just promote everyone so no one's feelings would be hurt. YOU created this...now you're complaining about the consequences because you didn't think it through? In everything balance. Yes, it's good for kids to learn some level of self reliance and confidence, and that comes from a lot of trial and error. However, some of these replies absolutely terrify me. For example the commenter that wrote "...we need Revolution more than ever so we can find out who is tough." WTF? Imagine wishing horrible violence on your own country. These people glorify violence. They want to undo any social progress we've made and go back in time to when men ruled through force, women and minorities were property, and anyone who wasn't cis and straight had to hide who they were and who they loved or risk being erased from existence. EDIT: rephrased for clarity

Dude, you know what caused the 'know where your kids are' movement? Polly Klaas, Amber Hagerman, JonBenet Ramsey, Ethan Patz, to name but a few of the more famous cases. Not to mention the numerous housefires, threatening each other with deadly weapons, watching your sibling go into anaphalaxis because you didn't know what to do and other joys experienced by the latch key generation. How many tragedies are too many? Just because you survived, doesn't mean the way we grew up was okay.

With all due respect, there’s nothing wrong with chilling instead of hustling. We are so wealthy as a human kind, it’s about time to stop worrying and find happiness in small things. Sure, if it’s your desire to pursue greatness then go for it. Just don’t expect everyone to follow.

I'm confused by the comment about kids not being able to handle Animal Farm and Huckleberry Finn. The kids are not the ones banning books.

So true. I am a pretty sensitive person and even I read those books no problem. It's the far-right white male snowflakes who can't stand them.

Says the man who completely dominated to the bodybuilding and film industries, and then had a wildly successful career in politics. Yes, he is ABSOLUTELY qualified to make these remarks. He's probably done a lot of bad things — cheating was just one of those things, and it has no bearing on the remarks he's making here.

Hey, don’t be so quick to judge, he is so wrong about this, but he seems to be a kind person in general. This is how he was raised, and this is how he express that he don’t understand young people.

I guess cheating on your wife & impregnating your housekeeper makes you tough! There have always been spoiled children, but this general isn't it. The Boomers were the most spoiled. There were more of them, so they always got their way.

AzzyIsHere and that is okay. We aren't the snowflakes anyway, it's those who cannot stand the word "gay," got excited from seeing a woman's ankle and, in the case of this Schwarzenegger character, WENT ON A RANT ABOUT ALL OF GEN Z even though it is a MASSIVE generalization. They are the snowflakes, not us. And trauma response after abuse is normal and natural, BTW. Sending you lots of love 💕

I am not in the mood to argue so I am not commenting directly, but there are some people in this section who are saying how "this generation is unwilling to work" and I just want to say that we aren't unwilling, we just hate the system. We are human, not robots. Also, pardon my revolutionary way of thinking, but we deserve a living wage as well. I am not offended BTW, I just realize that some of the older generation people here are...not very smart. ❄ Let's see how many boomer "snowflake" downvotes I get from this comment. 😉

I can see two sides, yes many kids are pampered and think they can take a mental health day from work for being misgendered or someone disagreing with them. God they are exausting to teach. The second lot are holding down 3 jobs just to pay rediculous rent and are living off beans and rice. There has to be a middle ground?

I half agree with him and half not. Sure, the snowflake generation seriously needs to grow up. But on the other hand, just getting out there and 'working hard' doesn't mean s**t any more, like it did in the boomer days. Most people who spend thousands to get a degree either can't get a job, or they get one at a pittance. Not to say you shouldn't work hard at what you do, but just throwing yourself to the grind doesn't get the same results it used to.

I'm GenX, but I feel the need to defend the younger generations. That one comment: "It started with participation trophies." Which YOUR generation invented, so take the part of the blame that is yours! I know of two families with GenX parents who had to fight the Boomer School Board to get their kids held back a grade so they'd actually learn the material. The Board wanted to just promote everyone so no one's feelings would be hurt. YOU created this...now you're complaining about the consequences because you didn't think it through? Please have a modicum of self-awareness and accountability.

I agree with him. We didn't get coddled or get "participation trophies" when I was a kid. But the world was a different place then. There were no distractions like social media, streaming etc. Computers? Yeah... no. That all plays into it. However... if there is a sudden global meltdown of electronics (super solar flare etc) -- then what? When anarchy ensues, the first to be culled would be Influencers and such.

You act like people think participation trophies mean anything. No one does. To a kid literally all it means is someone noticed you were there. Kids know that things like MVP matter more to everyone, they just want to be seen and acknowledged.

He definitely not wrong. In 20 years, kids are going to be raised in a hypoallergenic bubble and only be shown Disney movies and continue to be increasingly infantilized. They won't be allowed out unless there's a designated safe space area for when they're triggered.
